The incident was clearly visible from the club’s new CCTV system. “These two lads were issued with a ‘yellow card’ but as and from Friday night this behaviour will not be tolerated,” the statement added. “Those found responsible will be removed from the stadium, banned from Tolka Park and away grounds, and reported to the gardai who will then instigate proceedings as appropriate.
“We hope we will not have to take this action and maybe self-regulation amongst yourselves might be the best course to take, but failing, that we have no alternative but to implement the above. “None of us wants to take away the match day enjoyment, but this is simply too dangerous to overlook and we hope very much that you can support us in this action.” The use of flares or anti-social behaviour at League of Ireland games can result in fines being issued by the FAI’s Disciplinary Committee. Typically, these can range from a few hundred euro to €1,000, depending on the severity of the incident. Shelbourne Football Club has returned to the Airtricity SSE Premier Division for the 2020 season.

Dog fouling awareness campaign is launched THE Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon has launched Dublin City Council’s new dog fouling awareness campaign: ‘Dog Poo, It’s Everybody’s Business’. The aim of this campaign is to highlight the major issue of dog waste in our public parks and open spaces and to encourage dog owners and dog walkers to pick up after their dog, as dog waste affects the whole community. Recent research carried out by Behaviour & Attitudes for Dogs Trust revealed that 96 per cent of dog owners claimed they do pick up after their dog. Yet 57 per cent of people surveyed indicated that there is a big problem with dog fouling in their area. Seven in 10 people claimed to have walked in dog poo on the street; 51 per cent came across dog poo in their local park; 31 per cent rolled

Speaking ahead of the launch of the campaign, the Lord Mayor said the issue of dog waste has now become a major
problem in our public parks and open spaces in the city. "There are some people in our community who are more at risk of coming into contact with dog waste and putting their health in danger, such as wheelchair users,
visually impaired people, babies and toddlers, as well as people who play outdoor sports,” Cllr Brabazon said. "Whether you own a dog or not, dog waste in public spaces affects everyone in the whole community.”

How to talk to your child about Covid-19 SUZANNE CONNOLLY Chief executive Barnardos www.barnardos.ie
WITH news of the coronavirus dominating headlines, social media platforms and conversations across the country, your child is likely to have already heard information about the illness. Your child may be trying to make sense of this information by themselves and be feeling worried or scared. In the absence of definitive
information, some children can imagine situations are far worse than they are. At Barnardos, we are offering parents the following advice when talking to them about coronavirus. 1. Keep calm. Check in with yourself: how are you currently feeling? When parents are feeling anxious children can notice this and begin to feel stressed too. If needed, take some time for yourself or talk to another adult about your fears before talking to your child. 2. Talk to your child. As parents, we instinctively want to protect children from things that might frighten them. However, not talking about something can make children more scared. Ask

your child to tell you what they have heard about the virus and ask them how they are feeling. Let your child know that they can ask you questions. If you do not have all the answers, that is ok. Tell your child you will let them know when you know. 3. Answer questions. Many children will have heard about the virus and may already be asking questions. This is an opportunity to talk openly to your child and to share fact-based information. Answer your child’s questions in language they will understand with a level of information
appropriate to your child’s age. Avoid sharing too much information as this can be overwhelming. 4. Create a safe environment. Your child might be worried they will catch the virus. To reassure your child, talk to them about everything you and they are doing to stay safe, for example, washing their hands, using and disposing of tissues etc. Try to limit your child’s exposure to news reports and discuss your worries outside your child’s earshot. 5. Maintain a daily routine. A consistent daily routine is very
important for children as it creates a sense of stability and predictability. This is of particular importance since the nationwide school and crèche closures. Keep the days structured with consistent mealtimes, playtime, bedtime etc. 6. The best way you can support your child whenever they are feeling anxious is by reassuring them. Tell them you understand how they are feeling and let them know you are always there to listen, support, take care of them and give them a hug when needed.

Swedish school principals visit Blanchardstown Library BLANCHARDSTOWN Library was delighted to recently welcome a delegation of school principals from Sweden who came on an Erasmus+ study trip to Fingal. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the approaches taken within Fingal to encourage entrepreneurship and
enterprise among young people. The group was particularly interested in learning about the hugely successful Young Entrepreneurs Club organised by the Europe Direct Information Centre at Blanchardstown Library. The delegation included Christina Edman, from the Europe Direct

Information Centre in Vasterbotten County. Accompanying Christina were Jessica Bergkvist, Nicklas Brorsson and Charlotta Dahlgvist who are all school principals in the town of Skelleftea in northern Sweden. During their visit, the principals visited Ladyswell National School and met some of the fifth and sixth class pupils who have participated in the Young Entrepreneurs Club at Blanchardstown Library. The delegation also met principal Niall Murray, who spoke to them about the hugely positive effect participation in the club has had on pupils in his school. Following this visit, the Scandinavian guests went to Blanchardstown Library for a detailed presentation on the origins, objectives, organisation and
experiences of the Young Entrepreneurs Club. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eoghan O’Brien, said: “I am delighted that our guests from Sweden were able to witness Fingal’s Young Entrepreneurs Club in action in our libraries. I hope they enjoyed their visit to Fingal and have gained some valuable information about teaching entrepreneurship to young people.” Later that evening, the group got to experience the club for themselves when they sat in on a session. Speaking about the visit of the Swedish delegation to Blanchardstown Library, Senior Executive Librarian, Lilian Whelan, said: “The club is an example of how the library functions as an inclusive community hub where all are welcome to visit, use our facilities

their bike inside will not use their bikes as much because it is awkward for them to take their bike out every day. Bike Bunkers are an easy and accessible way for residents to keep their bike handy without the bike being in danger of being stolen or damaged. The bunkers are robust and non-flammable and will keep the bikes dry and safe. Green Party Councillor Donna Cooney said this new initiative is great for people who live in apartments or in the inner city. “It’s the convenience, really, of being able to go straight out and there they [the bikes] are,” she said. “You could also go away for the weekend and not have any concerns.” The Bunkers are semi cylinder metal huts that will be placed in free car
parking spaces close to the home of residents who have subscribed to the service. A suitable space that is free has to be found before a Bike Bunker can be installed there. Spaces that will be used by a bunker will have a colourful sign placed on them for a few weeks prior to installation, to make local residents aware that there will no longer be a parking space for use there. Bike Bunkers are currently a subscription service of €100 a year and can be shared by up to six residents. The first trial lasted around five months on John Dillon Street in Dublin 8 at a cost of €4,800. The innovative new service will hopefully be available across much of the Northside of the city next year.

Motor on with a road trip ARE we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Driving with kids can feel like being stuck in a bad episode of The Simpsons, but with a little planning it can be really great fun. In fact the best driving holidays are ones where the journey is as entertaining as the destination itself so before you pile into the car and head off into the great wide yonder, put those thinking caps on. Travelling abroad is going to be a problem for a while with Coronavirus grinding things to a halt, but you can still hop in the car and take a trip around our own green and very pleasant land. Choose a good route with lots of things to do along the way and make sure the care is in tip-top shape. Follow these tips and you won’t go far wrong.

If you want to stress-test yourself and your car simply pump the kids with sugary snacks and fizzy drinks throughout the journey. Be sensible with in-car treats. Fruit and crackers will keep little bellies satisfied. Bring lots of water and make sure you know where the toilet stops are en-route. THE LONSDALE PROJECT Despite being a pioneering scientist born in Newbridge in 1903, Kathleen Lonsdale’s name and legacy are curiously unknown by the Irish public. The Lonsdale Project celebrates her life, writings and adventures in x-ray diffraction, crystallography and war! A theatrical, playful and highly original production for audiences young and old, The Lonsdale Project delves into our relationship with science, with belief, and with ‘great thinkers’ who have shaped our lives today, and will shape our world, tomorrow. Created by Super Paua, it’s happening at Smock Alley Theatre in Temple Bar from March 1928. Tickets €12/10 from www. smockalley.com.

DUBLIN FRAGMENTS: THE PEARSON COLLECTION There’s a final chance to see the Irish Georgian Society’s 'Dublin Fragments: The Pearson Collection' curated by artist Peter Pearson this weekend. This exhibition that runs until Sunday, March 22, is a monument to Dublin at a particular moment in time in the last decades of the 20th century – a period of dramatic change on a widespread scale, where little of the built heritage was considered worth keeping. This presentation of architectural fragments and installations presents a dazzling display of Dublin craftsmanship. The exhibition is located at the City Assembly House on South William Street.
