WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS

A place to call home at last RESIDENTS at a new Co-operative Housing Ireland (CHI) development in Drumcondra spoke last week about their delight at moving into their new homes. Deakin Court on Richmond Road is providing 40 homes to families and individuals ranging in age from 84 to just under 12 months. The families were drawn from Dublin City Council’s housing list and many were previously homelessness or living in overcrowded or emergency

SHOPPERS and retailers at The Blanchardstown Centre put in a tremendous effort during the centre’s recent Donate for Discounts campaign. Shoppers were asked to buy a €3 wristband to avail of special offers at the centre’s outlets to raise much-needed funds for the LauraLynn children’s hospice. Not only did the shoppers get great value from their wristbands, but the centre was able to hand over a whopping €28,570 to LauraLynn at the end of the campaign. One of the families now enjoying a permanent home is Egle Riaukiene and her daughters Gabi and Eva. “Having somewhere to live, it means a lot to us,” said Egle. ”It feels like a real home, so we’re happy and we feel safe.” Egle’s elder daughter, Gabi, explained how finding a home had been a struggle for the family. “We were just always renting houses and it was really expensive so

and US states but over the years almost half have gone missing – including one sent to Ireland. There are understandable explanations for why some of the rocks went missing. Libya lost two under the Gaddafi regime while Romania’s ‘goodwill’ rock is believed to have been sold after dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was overthrown. However, one of Ireland’s two rocks went missing in slightly less dramatic circumstances, although it’s no less a tragedy in the eyes of space buffs. The Irish ‘goodwill’ Moon

rock – which was collected by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the historic first Apollo 11 mission was kept on display in the Meridian room at Dunsink Observatory in Finglas. But in the early hours of the morning on October 3, 1977, disaster struck when a suspected electrical fire broke out in the basement under the room. The fire brigade arrived within 20 minutes of being alerted but the room along with other parts of the observatory was completely destroyed. The precious rock was unknowingly taken along with the rest of the debris across the road to Dunsink Tiphead, which is now closed, and was never found. Former NASA employee and self-appointed private investigator of the Apollo Moon rock displays, Joseph Gutheinz, estimated the rock was worth $5 million and said there was virtually a pot of gold under the dump. The other piece of Moon rock collected from the Apollo 17 mission by Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, the last men on the moon, was put on display at the National History Museum.

THE 50th anniversary of the Moon landing was celebrated last week but the Northside has an almost forgotten link with the historic Apollo space programme. Moon rocks collected during the six landings between 1969 and 1972 were broken up and sent to 135 different countries, including Ireland, as a goodwill gesture. Each of the pieces were encased in a transparent plastic ball and mounted on a wooden plaque with each nation’s flag attached. In total, 370 pieces were sent to various countries

It’s much better.” Speaking at the new development, Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, said the 40 homes were part of 10,000 social homes due to provided across the country this year. Deakin Court is built on a CHI-owned brownfield site and was developed in partnership with Dublin City Council at a cost of €10.5 million. CHI is the national organisation for cooperative housing in Ireland and Deakin Court is its second development in Drumcondra after Calderwood. “The collaborative approach and close partnership of Dublin City Council in developing these projects has been key to their success,” said CEO, Kieron Brennan. “CHI is making a real contribution to meeting housing needs across Ireland. Currently CHI provides over 1,540 homes in Dublin city and county and over 2,400 across Ireland. “Last year alone saw us provide new homes for

The internal fit out of heating systems, kitchens, bathrooms etc. were all carried out to a high quality finish and the scheme is within easy reach of local services, schools and universities. Dublin Lord Mayor, Paul McAuliffe, who launched the development with Minister Murphy said the opening was a great day for the 40 families now

living there. “Deakin Court is to become their new home, their new beginning,” he added. “We are all acutely aware of the current housing crisis in Ireland, impacting most heavily on our capital city. “The lack of stability and security caused by this crisis bears serious consequences for family and community life. “Here, in the heart of the city, however, CHI with Dublin City Council has built the foundations of a sustainable community that will allow families to thrive and flourish.”

Cappagh Hospital surgery changes teenager’s life A TEENAGER from Co Meath has spoken about how surgery at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital in Finglas changed her life. Sara Kelly (18) was diagnosed with scoliosis in 2011 after visiting her GP for a chest infection. She attended regular check-ups to monitor the condition, which was initially treated conservatively. However, Sara elected to have surgery after the condition

began to negatively impact her life. The former under-14 Meath camogie player was one of five patients transferred to Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital in 2015 after spending three years on a waiting list in another Dublin hospital. As part of the spinal correction surgery, Sara had 14 screws and two rods inserted in her back. “The surgery has changed my life,” she said.

Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital.

“I was lucky to be transferred to Cappagh and operated on within five months, particularly after being on a waiting list in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin for three years. “The recovery was tough but manageable and I was home from the hospital after six days. Three years after my surgery, I am living pain-free.” Angela Lee, General Manager of Cappagh, said that the hospital has

consistently increased the volume of idiopathic scoliosis procedures over the past three years. “We met the Government’s target in 2018 of ensuring no child is waiting longer than four months for spinal fusion surgery,” she continued. “With the additional funding secured for 2019, Cappagh will have the capacity to complete 50 surgeries, which will free up space in other children’s hospitals to deal with more complex cases.” Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is the only hospital in Ireland that is currently carrying out two scoliosis procedures in one day. The hospital has significantly cut surgical waiting lists from 12-18 months in 2017 to 6-9 months for all orthopaedic procedures, and the waiting list for scoliosis

currently stands at four months. The hospital treats patients with idiopathic scoliosis, where the patient is suffering from no other medical complication. Mr Peter Keogh, Clinical Director and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital added: “Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital has been able to shorten the time a patient spends in surgery by having two consultant paediatric surgeons operating together and it’s the only hospital in Ireland currently undertaking this practice.” Cappagh Hospital is the pioneer of orthopaedic surgery in Ireland and with 159 beds is now the biggest dedicated elective orthopaedic hospital in the country, catering for both public and private patients. Sara Kelly is now living pain free.

Youth work highlighted YOUNG people from Dublin Central, Dublin North West and Dublin West were amongst 300 youngsters from all over Ireland who took part in a recent National Youth Showcase in the Mansion House. The ‘Youth Work Changes Lives’ event was held to celebrate the value, diversity and vitality of youth work in Ireland. A key message emerging from the day was that hundreds of thousands of young people and their communities take part in and benefit from youth work, and that there’s a need to sustain and increase funding for youth work to meet the needs of a growing youth population. The event – organised by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) –gave young the opportunity to speak directly to public representatives and share with them first-hand what they do, what they learn and the benefits of youth

work for them and their local communities. “This event showcases the exceptional quality of youth work happening throughout Ireland and celebrates the contribution of young people to Irish society and our local communities,” said Mary Cunningham, Director of the NYCI.

“The youth work sector benefits over 380,000 young people each year, supported by the efforts of 1,400 professional staff and 40,000 passionate volunteers, and yet much of this good work goes largely unnoticed. That’s why the ‘Youth Work Changes Lives’ event is so important. “It is really important

that young people particularly at grassroots level – get the chance to reach out and engage with local politicians, TDs, Senators and Councillors. “It will also provide young people with the opportunity to call on their local politicians to support increased investment in youth work

in the upcoming budget. “When politicians hear, see and experience the contribution and value of youth work in their local communities, particularly when expressed by young people themselves, it sends a very powerful message that this work is worth supporting and funding.”

Locals urged to have say on LPT

HOMEOWNERS in Fingal are being urged to have their say on the Local Property Tax ahead of a council meeting that will decide rates for 2020. Local councillors can adjust national rates by +/- 15 percent and a local political party representative says Fingal County Council’s current adjustment isn’t enough. “Dubliners are being taken advantage of by the unfair Local Property Tax,” said Edward Mac Manus, Aontu area representative for Castleknock. “This tax is much greater in Dublin due to the greater price of property. House buyers in Dublin lose out on many financial levels. House prices, stamp duty and levies are burdens as well as this tax.” Fingal County Council is currently holding a public consultation that Young People from MCRI Mairead, Gavran and Sumayyah in Dublin Central meet local Maureen O’Sullivan at the allows homeowners have event. their say on the rates and Mac Manus says it’s important they do so. “The Local Property Tax will increase by 15 percent next year from its 2014 base level if nothing is done,” he said. “The reduction voted for in the last two years was only 10 percent. “Fingal County Council has failed to provide adequate justification for not implementing the full 15 percent reduction. The Fingal LPT consultation period runs until noon on August 2 and locals can take part online at https://consult. fingal.ie/en/surveys. “A strong call to the council on this occasion to reduce the tax will pay dividends later,” said Mac Manus. “A message will be sent that the council will face much more forceful opposition if it acquiesces with central government to impose a substantial hike in the LPT.”

Italian job by Finglas kickboxing sensation The little town of Tortona, tucked away in the northeastern region of Italy, recently hosted a prestigious kickboxing international fight night. On show, among some of the best Italian professional kickboxers, was a Finglas girl. Robyn McDonnell was invited over to fight on the card after being spotted on the

international circuit by the fight night promoter. Robyn (17) was pitted against an Italian world silver medallist in a 3x2 minute bout in what was billed as one of the best amateur fights on the card. After training consistently for eight months with her coach Jon Mackey at Red Star Kickboxing, the Finglas fighter was in great

"Robyn has a had a great year so far," said Mackey. "She has a couple of great wins under her belt so heading to Italy for this fight was perfect, timing

Thankfully all the training paid off and Robyn dominated the three rounds from the start. The home crowd were left in shock as the Italian favourite was

City hemp business secures funding A NORTHSIDE based business that specialises in selling hemp products has raised a €150,000 loan through peer-to-peer (P2P) lending. The Hemp Company, located on Capel Street, raised the funds from Linked Finance, a service that matches private lenders with borrowers. The company, which promotes and supplies products derived from, and related to, the hemp plant will use the funds to rebrand, improve its online shop and purchase new software and hardware. On a global scale, the industrial hemp sector is thriving, with new opportunities for investors in business development all along the value chain. The Hemp Company Dublin, now in its 20th year, is a family-owned business and was an early entrant into what is now a dynamic emerging market.

In recent years hemp products containing the compound CBD have grown in popularity and stories have gained the public’s attention. The Capel Street store stocks high-quality CBD products including their own-brand CBD oil. Owner Jim McDonald is a passionate advocate for the development of the industry in Ireland and he spoke about how the finance was raised. “I had no idea what P2P lending was or how it worked,” he said. “Within minutes Linked Finance assigned me a dedicated account manager, my business case was written, and my loan funded by their lenders and ready for drawn down within three days. “It turns out people power was the perfect funding solution for Hemp Company.” Linked Finance has

now provided more than €38million to over 800 companies in Dublin since its launch. Other companies in Dublin it has provided loans to include Rathcoole-based printing house Quantum Fulfilment and gourmet eatery Lolly and Cooks. Niall Dorrian, CEO pf Linked Finance said the

platform’s purpose is to support Irish businesses, like The Hemp Company. “The Hemp Company is exactly the kind of hungry, innovative and rare Irish business that Linked Finance investors love to support,” he said. “The drive of Irish SMEs and their dedication to achieving their targets is

essential to the continued growth of the Irish economy.” Linked Finance recently reached the milestone of having issued over €100 million in funding to local businesses since its launch in 2013, and it recently announced plans to add 25 new staff by the end of 2020.

Locals vying to win Miss Burlesque Ireland 2019 title A NORTHSIDE woman is looking forward to taking part in her first Miss Burlesque Ireland competition this weekend. Ruby Noir, a Malahideborn Dubliner currently residing in North Strand, has been singing and performing on cabaret stages around the country for well over a decade. Ruby took home the title of Miss Pinup Ireland in 2017, wowing audiences at the Dublin International Tattoo Convention with her captivating vocals and retro style. This is Ruby’s first time to enter Miss Burlesque. The competition will be

taking place on Saturday, July 27 in Liberty Hall. “It’s very exciting to be taking part in the competition this year,” said Ruby. “I’m also pretty new to burlesque as a performance style but Miss Burlesque Ireland has a fantastic history of incredible performers and I can’t wait to be part of that line up!” DialEmma, who hails from Tallaght and has been living in Smithfield for the past 10 years, will be joining Ruby in the competition. She has been a wellknown regular of the Dublin cabaret, drag, and burlesque scenes since the year 2000

when she began her performance career in The George. DialEmma took part in the competition last year and was delighted to place as second runnerup. “Burlesque was a relatively new string to my performance bow last year, so when I entered and placed third I was absolutely thrilled. I’m hungry to do at least one better this year however!” joked DialEmma. Ruby and DialEmma have been friends for almost 15 years and have collaborated on nearly as many projects together. Both performers are founding members

of underCURRENT Seriously Camp Cabaret. For the past eight months they have been co-hosting on the pop culture podcast, Giving Me Life, which is also co-hosted and produced by DialEmma’s wife, Lady K. And the pals have turned their mutual love for vintage glamour into an educational experience by cocreating the Vintage and Pinup hairstyling workshops, The Brush Out Bombshells. Most recently the pair travelled to Rijeka, Croatia to take part in the Croatian Burlesque and Cabaret Festival 2019 with a glittering

Mater Private teams up with Dubs THE Mater Private Hospital has agreed a partnership to provide medical and healthcare support to the Dublin Senior Ladies Football team. Under the partnership, players will receive rapid access to medical consultants and outpatient services, such as physiotherapy, X-Ray and MRI scanning. The Mater Private support will also include funding for the medical staff as well as medical interventions and rehabilitation in the event of injury. A deal has been in place since last year but the new partnership cements the commitment of the hospital to provide best-in-class medical support to the team on an ongoing, longer-term basis. Founded in 1974, Ladies Gaelic Football is still recognised as one of the fastest growing female sports in Europe. With over 1,000 clubs in Ireland and counting,

Ladies Gaelic is reaching women and girls from all over the country. The Dublin Senior Ladies Football team has played in five successive All-Ireland Finals between 2014 and 2018, finishing as winners in 2017 and 2018. Over 50,000 supporters attended the All-Ireland Final in 2018, the largest attendance at a Ladies GAA final ever. This attendance significantly surpassed the then record-breaking 2017 crowd of 46,000, which was the highest attended women's sport final in the world that year, even beating the Champions League final and the Rugby World Cup. Female participation in sport is on the rise. Irish Sports Monitor data for 2017 showed the gender gap in sports participation at just 4.5 percent - narrower now than at any point since 2007. Over 40 percent of females regularly participate in sport today. Female participation

has increased in Gaelic Football; in Dublin figures are up 50 percent since 2015. Chief Operating Officer of the Mater Private Healthcare Group, Dr Caroline Whelan spoke about the partnership the Dubs. “As neighbours and friends of the Dublin Senior Ladies Football team, we are delighted to announce this medical partnership to provide player access to our topclass medical services and healthcare facilities at Eccles Street,” she said. “Sports injuries, when they occur, can be a huge concern for players and can seriously impact on their future sporting and professional career. “As the medical partner of Dublin Senior Ladies Football, the Mater Private will ensure the players receive comprehensive support from our highly qualified team of specialists and consultants, ensuring they are in the best possible health to play.

Dr Caroline Whelan (COO, Mater Private Hospital) with some of the Dubs at the announcement of the partnership that will see players access medical services and healthcare facilities at Eccles Street. In the event of injury, we will do everything possible to help the players get back on the pitch and performing at the highest level again, as soon as possible.

“We look forward to working closely with the team to ensure they have access to expertise in all the relevant specialities in as timely a manner as possible.”

Manager of the Dublin Senior Ladies Football team, Mick Bohan, welcomed the partnership with the hospital. “The Mater Private is an

integral part of our player welfare pathway, and we are fortunate that through this partnership, our players will have access to the best medical expertise available,” he said.

Legendary DJ Grandmaster Flash is on the Saturday.

Saturday headliners Groove Armada will take to the Beatyard Main Stage on August 3 for their first full live band show in Ireland in over a decade. One of the planet's best loved and biggest selling dance acts, Groove Armada's long-awaited return to the live stage is part of their 21st Anniversary celebrations. Over nearly two decades, Groove Armada have racked up millions of album sales and performed sold out shows worldwide headlining their own tours and festivals including the likes of WHP, Cream, ANTS and Wildlife Ibiza. With a catalogue of floor filling hits from ‘Superstylin', ‘I See You Baby’, and ‘Get Down’ to ‘If Everybody Looked The Same’, this performance is not to be missed. Joining headliners Groove Armada on August 3, Todd Terje and Grandmaster Flash are sure to get the party started and keep it going into the night. Todd Terje arrived on the Scandinavian dance

scene in 2004 and, in short order, became one of its most prominent figures. Terje channels his voracious appetite for several styles of music - including dub, disco, synth pop, house, and techno - into his edits. He also remixes tracks by the likes of the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, and Santana and huge club hits such as ‘Inspector Norse’ and ‘Snooze 4 Love’. Emerging from the South Bronx in the early 1970s, Grandmaster Flash is inarguably one of Hip Hop’s original innovators. Today, Grandmaster Flash is the voice of an entire generation of 1970s hip hop pioneers and his live show is a celebration of Hip Hop’s most formative decade. Chvrches are set to headline the Beatyard Festival on Sunday 4, following rave reactions to their outstanding sold out Irish shows last month. Their new critically acclaimed album 'Love Is Dead’ is the band’s third successive top 10 UK

album and follows their debut 'The Bones of What You Believe' in 2013 and 'Every Open Eye' in 2015. The Glaswegian act have played countless shows worldwide, with each tour's production reaching new heights and leaping them towards the top of festival bills - their headline spot at Beatyard is a must see. Jungle and Marc Rebillet will also take to the Beatyard Main Stage along with headliners Chvrches

on Sunday 4. In July 2014, Jungle released their self-titled debut album - cue online word-of-mouth and rave reviews, a Mercury Music Prize nomination, songs of the summer, viral videos, half a million sales, burgeoning DJ careers and a global tour that lasted two solid years. The whole thing was dreamed up by Josh J Lloyd-Watson and Tom T McFarland, a production and multi-instrumentalist

duo who never expected to leave their bedroom studios, far less become the core of a talent-filled seven-strong collective. Known for his incredible live one man shows, it is easy to see why Rebillet achieved huge levels of internet fame. Having captivated audiences around the world with his musical and lyrical talent, his show is sure to keep you laughing and dancing all night long!

Chvrches are set to headline Beatyard Festival on the Sunday.

The fact that the car is a self-charging hybrid, means that there will be no cost to the driver when operating in full electric mode. Maintenance costs are low and Toyota reckon that careful drivers should be able to complete up to half of their urban trips in electric mode. Two years ago Toyota president Akio Toyoda issued a company-wide

Have a summer camp at home MANY families will have booked summer camp places for the kids and it’s a great way of ensuring they have structured, funfilled days while they’re off school. Your DIY summer camp can combine classic camp activities and home-based fun to keep the little 'uns busy and happy all season long. Whether you're teaching them about the world by getting them involved in preparing a week's worth of international cuisine, or drawing them into your latest kids' playroom project, you can keep them active and interested right up to when the holidays end. PICK YOUR PROJECTS

Kids love traditional summer camps because they keep them occupied with fun activities in the company of other

children. And parents love that kids keep busy with activities that are both fun and educational. You can give kids the same experience by finding at-home projects that mix fun and education with practicality and usefulness. One great way to keep kids active, teach them valuable skills and get something done around the house is to involve them in your list of DIY projects. Obvious chores, like mowing the lawn, likely won't make the kids' list of fun activities, but helping you plant a herb garden might. Or, let them take an active role in redecorating their own rooms. Help them choose paint, bedding and accessories or to install an easy-tohang wallpaper mural. Decorating their own rooms will teach kids important home improvement and decorating skills - and could potentially keep them occupied for days. Other life skill-building

activities could include: • Encourage kids to research new cuisine, maybe from their pals' countries of origin. Then plan and present a week of dinners, with each meal hailing from a different country. Kids will learn cooking skills, interesting information about other cultures and the basics of grocery shopping on a budget. • Planting and nurturing a vegetable garden. Children learn horticulture and how to choose and raise healthy food items. • Doing some volunteer work. Even the youngest tot can learn to help others. Whether it's just visiting a senior citizens' center and playing games with the seniors, or helping serve at a food kitchen, volunteer work teaches children the importance of - and the satisfaction provided by helping others. With a little creativity and plenty of planning, you can recreate the best benefits of summer camp in your very own home.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

My Wife is Married to a Feckin’ Eejit MY Wife is Married to a Feckin’ Eejit is the hilarious debut from one of Ireland’s funniest comedians. This October, Gill Books will publish Bernard O’Shea’s first book.

About The Author BERNARD O’Shea is an Irish comedian and broadcaster from Durrow, Co Laois. On radio, he has written sketches for TodayFM and co-hosted two breakfast shows on 2FM and iRadio. On television he first made his name on RTÉ’s Republic of Telly, co-wrote and co-starred in the sitcom Bridget & Eamon, and more recently can be seen in Marty and Bernard’s Big Adventure. He currently lives in Dublin with his long-suffering wife and three children, and is a full-time comedy writer and performer.

‘My Wife is Married to a Feckin’ Eejit’ will hit the shelves on Friday, October 11 and is available to pre-order. Relationships aren’t easy, something Bernard knows all too well. Especially when your wife – after nearly 12 years of fights and flights, holiday disasters and tantrums – has nicknamed you ‘The Feckin’ Eejit’. If you thought your marriage was hard, wait until you see theirs! When Bernard asked his wife Lorna to tell him the top three most-stupid things he’d ever done, she listed off 20! From the time Bernard walked into a glass door on their first holiday together, to the ‘The Great Dishwasher Row of 2009’; his various attempts at weight loss; the trials of grocery shopping with children; leaving his Christmas shopping until the last minute; a disastrous caravan holiday in rural Ireland; dyeing all their clothes shades of green, and his hopeless attempts at DIY! For Bernard, life is a lazy adventure. For his wife Lorna, it’s more of an endurance race – juggling three young children and Bernard’s ‘eejitry’. It’s not always easy! My Wife is Married to a Feckin’ Eejit is the laughout -loud account of the trials and tribulations of family life, made all the harder when you’re married to a Feckin’ Eejit! My Wife is Married to a Feckin’ Eejit will be priced at €16.99.

Forum held on remote working MINISTER for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys, together with Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Richard Bruton, hosted a consultation forum on remote working last week.  The event, which was attended by enterprise, academia, policymakers and relevant interest groups, included a keynote address from Ben Wainwright of Abodoo. The forum was undertaken as part of Future Jobs Ireland, the whole-of-Government plan to prepare our business and workers for the future. The aim of the forum was to provide key insights for a new piece of research on remote working, which will ultimately feed into new Government policy in the area. The research will seek to understand the prevalence and types of remote working arrangements within the Irish workforce, the attitudes towards such

arrangements, and the factors which influence employers and employees to partake in such arrangements. Pillar 4 of Future Jobs Ireland is focused on increasing participation in the labour force. Flexible working solutions, such as remote working, could improve labour market participation, particularly among parents with young children, as well as those with caring responsibilities, older people and people with disabilities. Under this pillar, further actions are being progressed, including the provision of high-quality and affordable childcare services and improving incentives to participate in the labour force. Minister Humphreys said: “As we approach full employment, there is no doubt that increasing labour force participation will be good for the economy. “However, this isn’t just about the economy: it’s also about the wellbeing of our people. We spend

a huge proportion of our lives at work and striking a sustainable work-life balance can often be challenging, particularly for workers who have long commutes. Minister Humphreys said productivity for workers should never be about working more for less. “It should be about working better for more, she added. “That’s why, as part of Future Jobs Ireland, we are developing new Government policy on remote working. Meanwhile, Minister Bruton said highspeed connectivity will transform opportunities in rural Ireland. “It will drive entirely new models of service in health, in education and in enterprise that will help communities to carve out new economic activities, he said. “People will work remotely, receive services in their own homes, have access to technologies that make for smarter living, smarter learning, smarter The aim of the forum was to provide key insights for a new piece of research on remote working, which will farming and smarter ultimately feed into new Government policy in the area. Small Firms Association welcomes fund to enhance productivity THE Small Firms Association (SFA) has welcomed the announcement of â‚Ź3 million LEO Funds to enhance the productivity of small firms in every region, as part of the Future Jobs Strategy, announced by Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys. Sven Spollen-Behrens of the Small Firms Association

said: “The LEO Competitive Fund and the Competitive Pilot Scheme will support small businesses in their Brexit readiness and enhance productivity by stimulating research and innovation and promoting lean business practices. “These funds are needed to address the lagging productivity of our domestic firms and reduce our increasing reliance on multinationals.

The SFA also welcomed the Government’s announcement that it is developing a major new policy on SMEs and entrepreneurship under Future Jobs Ireland. “It is clear to those of us working with small businesses that more can be done to improve the design and implementation of national SME and entrepreneurship policies and programmes, said

Sven Spollen-Behrens. “The SFA is calling for a national Small Business Strategy that places a clear focus on the 98 percent of businesses employing half the private sector workforce, which are the lifeblood of towns and villages around the country. “It is time for a plan to boost the number and performance of small businesses.

GALVANISE

Galvanise is a new body of work by artist James L Hayes, the work presented in both galleries at MART in Rathmines aims to re-establish and re-introduce the concerns of modernist sculptural language. Hayes explores aspects of the casting process as a means to interrogate the boundaries between artist and artisan, the ‘ready-made’ and the ‘art object’, whilst also referencing industrial art production and commodification. References to important creative influences, such as Welsh artist Barry Flanagan and US based art historian and critic Rosalind Krauss are central to the exhibition.
