Local life affected by coronavirus outbreak continued from page 1 “The above information will be subject to change as the situation evolves with the Covid-19 outbreak,” the council added in a statement. “The council advises all citizens to stay in touch with latest updates on our website and social media channels.” Dublin City Council issued a similar advisory, stating that all services are closing to the public until at least March 29. This includes all Dublin City Council Libraries, Dublin City Council-run Sports, Leisure, and Community Centres, The Hugh Lane Gallery, Motor Tax Office (except by prior appointment), Richmond Barracks in Inchicore, City Hall (except for private events and the cafe) and the Lab on Foley Street. All other offices and facilities will remain open, including the Civic Offices, all Area Offices, the DRHE offices on Parkgate Street, parks, Bring Centres and Recycling Centres. Schools, of course,

Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, said: “While the financial loss to restaurants and local businesses will be huge this St Patrick’s Day, the Restaurants Association of Ireland fully supports the Government’s decision to cancel all parades in the interest of public safety. “However, the losses to restaurants and the hospitality sector need to be taken into consideration by the Government. Cllr Francis Timmons said: “Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the risk to public health, the 2020 Clondalkin Patrick’s Day Parade has to be postponed until further notice. We know a lot of people will be disappointed by this decision but we must put public health first.” And while continuing to operate as usual, with all stores open, the management of The Square Tallaght decided to cancel their programme of Special Events in the short term including a Family Fun Day due to take place on Friday (March 14). Other events that have been affected include Saint John of God Hospital’s annual Public Lecture Series that has been put back until the Autumn while the St Patrick’s Day Dalkey

Island Swim to raise funds for the RNLI has also been postponed. Aware and Dublin Port Company have also decided to postpone the annual St Patrick’s Day Harbour2Harbour fundraising walk, including the ‘Halfway Hooley’ at Dublin Port. The event, which last year attracted over 1,800 participants, will be rescheduled for a later date in the Autumn. A Save The Bees launch event in Trinity this week has been cancelled, while Coillte in partnership with the Tree Council of Ireland has made the decision to postpone National Tree Week 2020 and all related public events until further notice. Meanwhile, bizarre scenes at Tesco’s Bloomfields store in Dún Laoghaire showing shoppers queuing just to get in, prompted FTA Ireland to reassure the public that the nation’s supply chain is resilient and there is no need to stockpile items.

Dog fouling awareness campaign is launched THE Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon has launched Dublin City Council’s new dog fouling awareness campaign: ‘Dog Poo, It’s Everybody’s Business’. The aim of this campaign is to highlight the major issue of dog waste in our public parks and open spaces and to encourage dog owners and dog walkers to pick up after their dog, as dog waste affects the whole community. Recent research carried out by Behaviour & Attitudes for Dogs Trust revealed that 96 per cent of dog owners claimed they do pick up after their dog. Yet 57 per cent of people surveyed indicated that there is a big problem with dog fouling in their area. Seven in 10 people claimed to have walked in dog poo on the street; 51 per cent came across dog poo in their local

Speaking ahead of the launch of the campaign, the Lord Mayor said the issue of dog waste has

now become a major problem in our public parks and open spaces in the city. "There are some people in our community who are more at risk of coming into contact with dog waste and putting their health in danger,

such as wheelchair users, visually impaired people, babies and toddlers, as well as people who play outdoor sports,” Cllr Brabazon said. "Whether you own a dog or not, dog waste in public spaces affects everyone.”

How to talk to your child about Covid-19 SUZANNE CONNOLLY Chief executive Barnardos www.barnardos.ie

WITH news of the coronavirus dominating headlines, social media platforms and conversations across the country, your child is likely to have already heard information about the illness. Your child may be trying to make sense of this information by themselves and be feeling worried or scared. In the

absence of definitive information, some children can imagine situations are far worse than they are. At Barnardos, we are offering parents the following advice when talking to them about coronavirus. 1. Keep calm. Check in with yourself: how are you currently feeling? When parents are feeling anxious children can notice this and begin to feel stressed too. If needed, take some time for yourself or talk to another adult about your fears before talking to your child. 2. Talk to your child. As parents, we instinctively want to protect children from things that might frighten them. However, not talking about something

PHOTO POSED/ BIGSTOCK

can make children more scared. Ask your child to tell you what they have heard about the virus and ask them how they are feeling. Let your child know that they can ask you questions. If you do not have all the answers, that is ok. Tell your child you will let them know when you know. 3. Answer questions. Many children will have heard about the virus and may already be asking questions. This is an opportunity to talk openly to your child and to share fact-based information. Answer your child’s questions in language they will understand with

a level of information appropriate to your child’s age. Avoid sharing too much information as this can be overwhelming. 4. Create a safe environment. Your child might be worried they will catch the virus. To reassure your child, talk to them about everything you and they are doing to stay safe, for example, washing their hands, using and disposing of tissues etc. Try to limit your child’s exposure to news reports and discuss your worries outside your child’s earshot. 5. Maintain a daily routine. A

consistent daily routine is very important for children as it creates a sense of stability and predictability. This is of particular importance since the nationwide school and crèche closures. Keep the days structured with consistent mealtimes, playtime, bedtime etc. 6. The best way you can support your child whenever they are feeling anxious is by reassuring them. Tell them you understand how they are feeling and let them know you are always there to listen, support, take care of them and give them a hug when needed.

Hundreds of new houses get green light in Tallaght SOUTH Dublin County Council has agreed to progress an affordable housing development in Killinarden, Tallaght that could provide up to 500 new social, affordable and private homes. The proposed mix for the Killinarden site is for 300 affordable and 100 private homes with an extra 100 social homes provided. Affordable housing delivered on the site is expected to include 2-bed apartments/ duplex, 3-bed houses/duplex and 4-bed houses.

The development will also include a new community centre and sports pavilion to meet the community and sporting needs of residents. This aspect of the development is seen as central to connecting the new and existing communities of the area. “The Killinarden site was the subject of an approved council bid for support from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government under the Serviced Sites Fund for the delivery of an indicative 300

affordable homes,” the council said. “The final price and income levels will be subject to a competitive tender process supporting both the current estimated land value and projected building costs.” The Killinarden development was one site listed by the council for the public when launching an expression of interest portal in September 2019. The launch of the portal followed the allocation of €18 million to South Dublin County Council by the Department

of Housing, Planning and Local Government through the Government’s Serviced Sites Fund to support the development of three sites earmarked for the delivery of affordable homes. The two other sites include plans for 135 homes in phase one of the approved Clonburris Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) scheme, and 100 homes in Rathcoole. The council said 2,345 expressions of interest had been received through the portal to date with 1,515 people indicating a preference for

Killinarden, of which 382 were first preferences with 401 second preferences and 732 third preferences. “The delivery of affordable homes is one aspect of South Dublin County Council’s ambitious housing programme that aims to deliver 4,500 homes over the lifetime of the current council,” the local authority added. “Estimated to be worth over €1 billion, it is part of the council’s commitment to the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland programme.

However, Deputy Seán Crowe (SF) said the decision to agree to the sale of council-owned land to a private developer would be a bitter blow to all those currently waiting for accommodation on the South Dublin County Council housing list. “This is another missed opportunity to deliver up to 500 public homes that would help meet social, affordable, cost rental, and affordable leasehold purchases that are badly needed and not currently available,” Deputy Crowe said in statement.

Paul leads the largest group of chiropractic clinics in Ireland PAUL Bradley is a Chiropractor originally from Derry. He initially had interest in the profession when he was competing both on a national and international level in athletics as a junior. During this time he received chiropractic care in order to recover and prevent injuries from occurring. Studying his full time degree in The University of Glamorgan, he began practicing in Belfast before opening his first clinic at the age of 24 in Carrick on Shannon in 2009 during recessionary times. BOOK OF THE WEEK

Tach and the Cosanthor About The Author SANIYA Chughtai was born in Karachi, Pakistan and has lived in Ireland since the 90’s. She wrote her first children's book nine years ago under the series, ‘The Adventures of Chee and Dae.’ Since then she has since written nine books, six of them have been published so far and one at illustration stage. She has also written five successful children’s book under the series ‘The Adventures of Chee & Dae’. The first book has been translated into Arabic and Urdu. She has also ventured into film, making a short documentary titled ‘The Story of the Storyteller’. This won the best short documentary at the GUTech short film category at the Muscat International Film Festival 2016 in Oman.

TACH and the Cosanthor is a children’s hurling book and the first book in a five-part series. Living in an ancient tribe called The Wadi Tribe, is a wee little turtle, with the kindest of hearts called Tach. He is afraid of any animals with big teeth which is perpetually everyone! This fear stops him from playing with his friends and he often sits under a tree drinking kale juice and watching his friends play conkers and sticks. Tach loves Story Time with Saltur, the great old wise turtle, where he can disappear into the stories without any fear! Listening to Saltur tell stories whilst sitting in his hanging water hammock, is one of Tach’s favourite things to do with his friends Turwa and Kaw. After all, nobody ever got hurt lis-tening to a story, right? Just when Saltur’s story is getting

interesting, Anya interrupts Story Time with a warning of dangers to come and Tach is accidentally swept up in the adventure of a lifetime! An exciting adventure where there are secret tunnels, magical butterflies, strange forests and the scariest of all, wolves. But most importantly he meets the last great warrior, a Cosanthor called Renba, the black puma. Tach has to learn how to conquer his fears to help save his village, The Wadi Tribe from the wolves, who are only days away from attacking them! Will Tach be able to help his family and friends? Read all about Tach’s first adventure! The author is married to Brendan Mc Kitrtick who comes from a strong GAA background, where all the three brothers played football and their father, Seamus McKittrick is an All-Ireland minor dou-ble gold medallist. After requests from Brendan to write GAA children's books, Saniya finally found inspiration while researching the words, “hurling is an ancient warrior sport”. The legend of ‘Tach the Hurler’ was created.

Pouffe... and the trend begins! LAST year may have been the year of potted plants and vibrant velvet, but 2020 is here and it’s safe to say the year of the pouffe is well and truly

underway. Today, EZ Living Furniture are telling us just how useful pouffes can be, without the need to sacrifice style.

1. CREATE THE PERFECT PERCH! If you live in a small apartment or are in need of extra seating without committing to a set of

chairs, a pouffe will be the perfect compromise. 2. CREATE A KIDS’ CORNER! If you have small children, creating a safe corner for them to socialise might be exactly what they both need and love. Plus it’s compact enough that can be easily stored away when friends come to play. 3. MAKE IT MOVE MOUNTAINS! One of the greatest things about a pouffe is its versatility. A pouffe can either be a perfect accessory for an armchair, act as a flawless footstool, or it can become a tray for drinks, books, and newspapers.

The Ottowa Ottoman, available at EZ Living Furniture.

Check out the pouffe collection at EZ Living Furniture.

4. STORAGE SAVER! We all know ‘The chair’clothes are placed on it that are too dirty for the closet but too clean for the laundry. If you are familiar with ‘the chair’ then you will be happy to hear of its new and improved replacement- ‘the chairdrobe’. If you’re not strong enough to give up ‘the chair’ just yet, why not wean yourself off gently by adding a pouffe instead. A pouffe will still provide a storage but without the excess mess. 5. PLEASING POUFFES! Pouffes are not only compact and practical, they are also exceptionally pleasing to the eye. If you want to add style or a theme to your room, a pouffe is sure to be your best friend! For EZ Living Furniture’s new Pouffe collection, simply click onto www. ezlivingfurniture.ie.

THE LONSDALE PROJECT Despite being a pioneering scientist born in Newbridge in 1903, Kathleen Lonsdale’s name and legacy are curiously unknown by the Irish public. The Lonsdale Project celebrates her life, writings and adventures in x-ray diffraction, crystallography and war! A theatrical, playful and highly original production for audiences young and old, The Lonsdale Project delves into our relationship with science, with belief, and with ‘great thinkers’ who have shaped our lives today, and will shape our world, tomorrow. Created by Super Paua, it’s happening at Smock Alley Theatre in Temple Bar from March 1928. Tickets €12/10 from www. smockalley.com.

DUBLIN FRAGMENTS: THE PEARSON COLLECTION There’s a final chance to see the Irish Georgian Society’s 'Dublin Fragments: The Pearson Collection' curated by artist Peter Pearson this weekend. This exhibition that runs until Sunday, March 22, is a monument to Dublin at a particular moment in time in the last decades of the 20th century – a period of dramatic change on a widespread scale, where little of the built heritage was considered worth keeping. This presentation of architectural fragments and installations presents a dazzling display of Dublin craftsmanship. The exhibition is located at the City Assembly House on South William Street.
