We’ll never give up hope THE family of a missing Northside teenager say they will never lose hope of finding her as they brace themselves for the third anniversary of her mysterious disappearance. On January 1, 2008, Amy Fitzpatrick (16), from Coolock, went missing in Mijas, Spain, while walking home from a friend’s house and hasn’t been seen since. New Year’s Day will be hugely emotional for Amy’s family and relatives who have tirelessly searched and appealed for any information that might lead them to finding her. Amy’s heartbroken father Christopher will join his sister Christine Kenny and their rela-

Amy’s aunt, Christine, has been among those working tirelessly over the last three years to keep the case in the public’s mind. MISSING: Amy Fitzpatrick disappeared in Spain on January 1, 2008.

Amy’s aunt in emotional anniversary appeal for some news,” Christine told Northside People. “Somebody knows something and we really want them to come forward to help us to find Amy. “The past three years have been heartbreaking for our family. We will never give up our search for Amy. “We’d like to thank everyone who has helped us in our search but we would please ask that they continue to help us by keeping Amy’s posters up around Spain. “There doesn’t seem to be anything happening with the case but it’s not for the want of pushing and putting pressure on the investigators.” The last three years have been devastating and frustrating for the family who feel not enough is being done to find Amy. Ms Kenny is heavily involved in the campaign to find Amy on behalf of her brother, whose health has deteriorated since the loss of his beloved daughter. “I took this on for the love of Amy and my brother,” Christine explained. “Christopher thought she’s be found by now and he’s literally broken hearted at this stage. “He was extremely close to

her and he’d speak to her quite frequently. He misses those phone calls something terrible. “All children should have somebody who will fight to find them.” Christine’s search for Amy is even more meaningful to her as her own son died suddenly last year aged just 24. “I know what it’s like to lose a child but the difference is that I know where my child is and that he has a resting place,” she said. “I still have hope that we will get the information we need to lead us to Amy. “Hopefully this article might refresh people’s memories because I know there were people from Ireland who were in Spain at the time of her disappearance and they might have seen something.” Christine has been involved in a campaign not just to find

She believes this could help to prevent similar cases. “Not enough is being done to find missing children and I have been campaigning for this alert system for three years,” she added. “I met with MEP Gay Mitchell recently who actually took the time to sit down and listen to what I had to say about the need for such a system. “His feedback was very positive and he’s going to bring the proposal to Brussels to see if he can get it passed. “Something has to be done to highlight the need for this system.” Anyone with any information on Amy’s whereabouts is asked to contact Christine and her family through www.searchforamy.com

Labour selects Ryan for Dublin North SENATOR Brendan Ryan has been selected to run for Labour in the Dublin North constituency in the general election. Senator Ryan, a brother of former Dublin North TD Sean Ryan, was selected at a convention held in the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan. Speaking afterwards, Senator Ryan said he was delighted to have been selected as the Labour Party candidate in the constituency. “It was a great honour to get such a strong and decisive endorsement from members in the constituency, who took time out to attend the meeting,” he stated. “I look forward to the challenge of winning back our Labour seat in the upcoming election. “I have been working hard for the people of Dublin North since my election to Seanad Éireann in 2007, and I will continue to do so. “This election will be an historic opportunity to elect Eamon Gilmore as Taoiseach and with the support of the Dublin North electorate, I hope to join his team in Dáil Éireann in the near future.”

Breen in surprise move to Dublin North West FINE Gael’s two selected candidates for the Dublin North West constituency have admitted that only one of them is likely to win a seat for the party in the upcoming general election.

Bruton and Ó Muirí to contest Dublin North Central

by Aoibhinn Twomey Cllr Bill Tormey and Lord Mayor of Dublin Cllr Gerry Breen will battle it out for a seat in the constituency which hasn’t had a Fine Gael representative in the Dáil since 1997. The party’s surprise move has the blessing of Cllr Tormey who says he campaigned for the Lord Mayor to be his running mate. According to Cllr Breen, the Fine Gael party are pulling out all the stops to get a Dáil seat in the Dublin North West constituency. “My party asked me to stand there, I suppose, because they feel that as Lord Mayor I have enjoyed a high profile,” he told Northside People. “Dublin North West is one of the weakest constituencies for the party in the country. “I don’t think there are two seats for Fine Gael but I’m pretty confident that I am the stronger candidate between us.” He added: “I’d like to think Cllr Tormey and I complement one another by running together but at the same time, like all politicians, I’m in competition for a Dáil seat with the dog and the devil.” Cllr Tormey said the competition for a Fine Gael seat in the Dublin North West constituency

 Cllr Gerry Breen

is a one horse race. “I think Gerry Breen will add to the total campaign but I wouldn’t say he’s got an awful lot of a higher profile than I do,” Cllr Tormey told Northside People. “I do two hours of live radio per week. I do interviews for the TV and for the papers and my website gets between 900 and 1,000 hits per week. “I think people will vote for a good, intelligent candidate and I bring that to the table.” Cllr Tormey believes his constituents will reward him for his dedication to the area over the last 30 years. “Gerry certainly is a contrast to me in that he is very much to the right of me in his approach

and views,” he claimed. “But the facts are that I have a constituency office in the heart of the area. “I live here and have been in the constituency for 30 years.” Both Cllrs Tormey and Breen agree that Labour candidate Roisin Shortall is certain to retain her Dáil seat in the next general election and Fianna Fail’s Noel Ahern will strongly defend his seat, despite the push against the Government. Dublin North West is a threeseater constituency.

RICHARD Bruton TD and Clontarf ward councillor Naoise Ó Muirí will run for Fine Gael in the forthcoming general election in the Dublin North Central constituency. Deputy Bruton, who was first elected to the Dáil in 1982, served as Minister for Enterprise from 1994 to 1997 and Minister of State at the Department of Industry and Commerce from 1986 to 1987. He believes one of our great strengths as a nation is our creativity. “We need to combine this with smarter ways of working to create a vigorous and authentic Ireland,” he stated. “Other generations knew the importance of avoiding extravagance and waste. “This lesson, which was forgotten, can be relearned. “Politics must lead by example and lead Ireland onto a better and fairer path. Deputy Bruton said young people must be a central part of the recovery. “They must not pay the price for past mismanagement,” he added. “We need their enthusiasm and energy now more than ever.” Cllr Ó Muirí was first elected to Dublin City Council in 2004 for the Clontarf ward and subsequently re-elected in 2009. He is chair of the Environment and Engineering Strategic Policy Committee and the Dublin Fire Brigade Development Board and has also served on various other committees in the city council. Speaking after his selection, Cllr Ó Muirí said: “My generation will shoulder much of the burden of work required to set the country on the right path again; those of us with young families and large mortgages, doing their best to make ends meet as we restore the national finances over the next 10 years. “I want to represent the people of Dublin North Central in Dáil Éireann with a view to transforming Ireland and securing our national sovereignty once again.”

Student teacher plan slammed STUDENT teachers at St Patrick’s College in Drumcondra have slammed a Government initiative that will see them working in schools without pay. A spokesperson for the 2,500 student teachers described the FÁS Work Placement Programme as “demoralising” and a “slippery slope towards cheap labour”. Minister for Education Mary Coughlan recently approved the initiative which allows schools to take on teachers who are currently on the dole for work experience. The scheme is an extension of an existing work experience programme. The teachers and teaching assistants would continue to receive their social welfare benefits and could be hired for up to 40 hours a week for nine months, according to a statement from the Department of Education. News of the initiative hit a nerve with many as it came just weeks after the Government announced that 700 teaching jobs were to be axed at the end of this school year. College graduate Peter Melrose, who is the vice president of the Students’ Union in St Patrick’s College, expressed his fear that unemployed teachers will be “worked to the bone” in return for their dole money as part of the FAS scheme.

by Aoibhinn Twomey “People who have studied and trained to become teachers see it as a vocation,” he told Northside People. “They want to be a teacher at all costs, even it means working for free, which is incredibly demoralising. “I think the Government is taking full advantage of the current mindset through this scheme and we at St Pat’s Students’ Union just can’t see the justification or benefit for newly graduated teachers to work for free. “Teachers taking up this scheme will have to live off the dole and bear the additional cost of travel and having to pay for lunches while working the same hours as their colleagues who’ll be getting paid a full wage.” He added: “When will there ever be fully-paid teaching positions available when schools can get unemployed teachers to work for free?” Peter (22), who lives in Drumcondra, graduated from his teaching degree course last year and has taken a sabbatical to work as the vice president of

College graduate Peter Melrose says student teachers are concerned about the FÁS Work Placement Programme. PHOTO BY DARREN KINSELLA

the students’ union. He explained how he, like many other newly qualified teachers, are faced with a future of uncertainty. “It seems likely that I’ll have

only two choices – work for free as part of the FAS course or emigrate abroad,” he told Northside People. “If I’m honest I’d rather emigrate.

“When I talk to my friends it’s a case of what country are you moving to rather than which school do you hope to work in? “The jobs simply aren’t out

there for a number of reasons, which is why only a handful of the people from my course of over 400 were lucky enough to get permanent teaching jobs. “The tide has certainly turned on the profession which has gone from the perception of being a safe, secure and pensionable job to an educated and trained life of unemployment.” The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) is also highly critical of the FAS scheme, as it believes it offers no prospects to unemployed teachers. “It is not a platform to real employment," an INTO spokesperson stated. “Many teachers who are now out of work were in fulltime temporary employment last year. “Schemes like this are no guarantee of employment. “Already unemployed teachers have seen job prospects curtailed, planned reductions in salary and disimprovements in pensions. “Being told they can work for nothing does not improve their situation one bit.” The INTO spokesperson said the Minister for Education’s claims that the scheme is aimed at supporting unemployed teachers does not stand up, especially after it was announced so soon after the

teaching job cuts were revealed. “Most people would see this as one arm of the system displacing jobs while another is trying to fill positions with unpaid workers,” the spokesperson stated. In its support of the FAS Work Placement Programme, the Department of Education will be providing a number of work experience placements in Dublin, Athlone and Tullamore. Normal working hours from 9.15am to 5.30pm, Monday to Thursday; and 9.15am to 5.15pm on Fridays will apply. “It is anticipated that the placements will be full-time for a period of nine months,” a department spokesperson said. “The Department will also consider part-time placement where appropriate, as well as flexible working hours. “Participants must be registered with FAS in order to be eligible to apply for a placement. “There is no payment of salary or allowances in respect of placement. “Participants who are in receipt of certain social welfare payments for three months may be able to retain their payment and entitlements while on placement, provided this is approved in advance by the Department of Social Protection.”

4 review of the year 2010

2010

THE year 2010 will be remembered for the deepening economic crisis that has plunged the country into turmoil, and that never to be forgotten little loan from our friends in Europe. Politics inevitability dominated again with words like ‘bailout’ ‘austerity’ and ‘IMF’ tripping off the tongues of broadcasters and journalists morning, noon and night. As politicians queued up to inform us that they won’t be facing the electorate at the next general election, there was unrest on the streets with people protesting over savage pay cuts and directing their ire towards disgraced bankers who had long since escaped to warmer climes. And speaking of warmer climes, we did have a decent summer, but we also had the severest winter since the ‘60s with plummeting temperatures and heavy snowfalls bringing the country to a standstill not once but twice in the calendar year. As well as having to cope with a tough January we also had snowfall in November and

December, the like of which hasn’t been seen for many a year. Gangland killings and Tiger kidnappings were once again a scourge on our society with a number of ‘hits’ taking place locally. On a sporting note, we had a number of successes, with Dublin winning the All-Ireland Ladies’ Football title at Croke Park in September catching the eye. There were some great success stories in athletics too with Ireland’s Under 23 men’s team winning a gold medal in the European Cross Country Championships in Portugal. Two Northsiders, David Rooney and John Coghlan, were members of the team. Sadly there were many tragedies too and on April 30, the country was stunned to hear the shock news that Clontarf native and RTE broadcaster

Gerry Ryan was found dead in his apartment. Later in the year, it would be revealed that cocaine use played a part in the death of the much-loved celebrity. It was up to music to give us a much-needed lift with Mary Byrne rising from the obscurity of a Tesco cash register to overnight fame on the XFactor. And speaking of fame, young Jessica Cervi, from East Wall, did the Northside proud when she was the winner of this year’s Fame competition on RTE, along with fellow Dubliner Ben Morris. As always, Northside People’s editorial team and photographer DARREN KINSELLA captured the highlights and the lowlights for our loyal readers. Here, we have picked out just some of the moments that made the news locally.

Review of the Year the Government when it introduces water charges. Swords ward councillor Clare Daly (SP) issues her threat as the imposition of the charge is set to become a reality for already hard-pressed householders. In a stinging new year attack, Cllr Daly, who led the successful anti-water charges campaign in Fingal in the 1990s, warns that a campaign of civil disobedience against the “double tax” will be launched.

Forde quits Sinn Féin One of Sinn Féin’s leading Northside councillors stuns local politics by quitting the party to join Labour. Donaghmede ward councillor Killian Forde tells Northside People he is leaving Sinn Féin to join Eamon Gilmore’s team. The move follows a major row between Forde and Sinn Féin after he defied party bosses and voted for Dublin City Council’s budget, which included the abolishment of waivers for waste charges.

January: Cllr Clare Daly (SP) has vowed to rally the troops and wage war on the Government when it introduces water charges.

Equipment travel fee slammed A Northside Olympic hopeful is forced to use Belfast Airport instead of Dublin Airport when travelling to overseas events and training due to the cost of carrying his sports equipment. Pentathlete Eanna Bailey, from Swords, hits out at Aer Lingus after being charged €80 to bring his sports pistol to a recent event. Aer Lingus confirms to Northside People that it is their policy to charge for such items.

Concern for Cadbury jobs Members of two trade unions at the Cadbury plant in Coolock seek assurances about their

jobs following the €13.6 billion takeover by US food giant, Kraft. Shop stewards from SIPTU and UNITE, which each represent 350 workers at the Coolock production facility, call on Cadbury’s management in Dublin to seek immediate assurances from the new owners about the future of the Irish operations. Kraft Foods says it is eager to build on Cadbury’s iconic brands through increased investment and innovation.

FEBRUARY Pharmacy’s future in doubt A Northside community that has been left waiting for a local

Health Service Executive (HSE) clinic to open in their area is facing the loss of its pharmacy. Residents in Clongriffin have been waiting for nearly two years for a planned primary care clinic that has not materialised. However, the HSE says it is not in a position to continue with the planned clinic, which would have employed seven doctors to serve the local community.

Blow for community projects There is widespread anger on the Northside when the Government pulls the plug on two community development projects that provided an important resource for local people.

Local residents believe the development will have a serious effect on their quality of life and say it’s unsuitable for their area. St Joseph’s Centre says it has met with its neighbours in Griffith Court on many occasions to discuss the matter.

Save our health! A Northside man lashes out over the condition of his council home, which he claims is not suitable for human habitation. An exasperated Charles Scullion, from Coolock, highlights his family’s plight and makes an urgent plea for help. Mr Scullion has been renting the rundown property from Dublin City Council for the last 18 months. However, it has been plagued by terrible leaks, with the accruing damp thought to be affecting the health of his wife and son who both suffer from respiratory problems. The city council says it is investigating the problems.

Bayside development gets go-ahead Controversial plans for a major development at a shopping centre on the Northside are given the green light by Fingal County Council.

A multi-million euro redevelopment of Bayside Square is finally given planning permission after a number of unsuccessful applications from developers KSA. The developers say their latest plans take into account the concerns of the local community, who had organised a ‘Save Our Square’ campaign when the first planning application was lodged a number of years ago. Included in the plan is permission to construct 62 residential units.

hospital to be constructed in Clontarf spark major concerns among angry locals. Over 100 residents pack out a public meeting to voice their opposition to the new 100-bed hospital, which has received planning permission from Dublin City Council for a site at 119 Howth Road. The proposed development will include maternity services, gynaecology, three surgery theatres, phlebotomy, physiotherapy, pharmacy, x-ray department and consultants’ suites. Later in the year, An Bord Pleanala rejects the plan.

Library dispute sparks anger

SR Technic workers demand help

A local authority and public sector trade unions are urged to find a breakthrough to end an industrial dispute at a Northside library. A delegation of former workers, including Swords locals John Devlin and Matt McCormack, meet with the Tanaiste’s office to discuss the urgent situ-

ation. As promised funding has not yet been provided to DIT and DCU for new degree courses set up for the former SR Technics employees, they face an uncertain future regarding their educational needs.

Warning of incinerator ‘threat’ The new Poolbeg incinerator could have serious health implications for Northside residents living downwind of the project, a local environmentalist claims. Bailout accusation sparks row Independent TD Finian McGrath is lashed over his support for the Government’s bailout of Anglo Irish Bank. Clontarf ward councillor Aodhan O’Riordain (Lab) and the Dublin North Central TD become embroiled in a war of words over the contentious issue that has enraged the nation. Cllr O Riordain accuses Deputy McGrath of putting his own electoral interests above those of his constituents by voting to support the bailout. However, Deputy McGrath says the Labour Party is putting politics ahead of people and insists that as an Independent TD he will decide how best to vote on issues as they arise.

An organisation that provides services for people with intellectual disabilities vows to crank up the pressure on the Government until a new multimillion 60-bed unit that has been lying idle since last year is finally opened. St Joseph’s Association for the Intellectually Disabled hit out over the saga at Knockamann, the development built on the grounds of St Ita’s Hospital in Portrane. The development, which comprises 10 six-bed bungalows, remains unused because of a Health Service Executive (HSE) moratorium on hiring vital new staff for the project. It eventually opens later in the year.

Housing list nightmare A Northside couple who claim they have lost over nine years’ housing list points because of an “error” by Dublin City Council call for immediate action in their search for a new home. However, the local authority disputes the claim. Brian Quigley and Fiona Tucker, from Coolock, are shocked to learn that they are no longer on the city council’s housing list. They believe they had nine years’ housing list points built up between them but after visiting the city council’s offices to discuss their housing options discover there is no record of them.

Ridgewood estate sparks panic among parents and at least two schools in the area move to alert parents to keep a watchful eye over their children.

Haphazard water supply Furious residents in Howth have to endure a haphazard water supply that has often left them without water for up to three weeks. Householders in Casana View on the Summit often get little or no notice when their water supply is throttled or cut off. The most recent shortage occurred on April 19, 28 and 29 when the supply was cut off for up to a day and a half. Fingal County Council confirms that the water levels in Howth reservoirs were quite low on April 28 and 29.

New library lying idle A fully stocked state-of-the-art library that cost €4 million has been lying idle in Rush for over eight months because it cannot be staffed as a result of the jobs embargo in the public sector. No expense was spared in converting the village’s 19th century catholic church into a stunning community facility. Fingal County Council confirms that the library is ready to open but has been delayed because of the ban on public sector recruitment. Eventually it opens later in the year much to the relief of locals.

Bermuda invite divides councillors Fingal county councillors are at loggerheads over the prospect of an upcoming all-expenses paid trip to Bermuda. A brochure circulated to council members entices members with the promise of the island's “breathtaking pink sandy beaches, iridescent turquoise waters, friendly people and a sophisticated ambiance”. Fingal County Council explains that under the current procedure, a conference or event must be listed and noted (approved) by the full council meeting, prior to the event taking place.

JUNE Fury over grass cutting plan Residents in Portmarnock and Swords are up in arms over Fingal County Council’s new approach to grass cutting which will see many recreational green spaces left to become overgrown meadows. The decision to cut down on grass cutting is part of a fiveyear ‘Fingal Growing Places’ initiative to reduce the number of “heavily manicured” open spaces which create a “sterile environment and reduce the diversity of wildlife”. The council says it is happy to meet with residents to fine tune how each area is managed on a site-by-site basis.

Northside over the Archdiocese of Dublin’s plans to push for the rezoning of lands at up to 20 churches for residential development. In a submission seen by Northside People, the St Laurence O’Toole Diocesan Trust, which manages the Dublin Archdiocese property portfolio, sets out a list of 20 sites which it argues should be rezoned as they are “surplus to requirements”. The submission was lodged in relation to the Draft Dublin City Development Plan 2011– 2017.

Vital support services denied Seven students with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome will be deprived of psychiatric and psychological support at their Northside school because of a lack of adequate resources. The secondary students at St Joseph’s School in Fairview are among 66 children in the north east catchment area who are on a waiting list for the vital support services they need to help them through education. The Government is refusing to provide adequate resources

to the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) service at Beechpark, which provides clinical supports such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, psychological support and a psychiatric service for children with Asperger’s and autism.

Northside jobs bonanza

A discovery of pyrite at a senior citizens’ complex on the Northside will cost over €500,000 to fix and will force 26 elderly residents from their homes for up to a year. Clancarty Court in Donnycarney was built at a cost of €3

A rare jobs bonanza is welcomed on the Northside as three companies based in Santry and Dublin Airport announced that they are to create over 1,100 jobs. Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), Global Stream Service

and the TLC Nursing Home Group made the announcements over three days. Over 500 jobs will be created by the DAA at its new passenger terminal, Terminal Two; Global Stream Service will increase its Santry-based workforce by 400; and the TLC Nursing Home Group is to create 140 jobs in Santry through the provision of a new care centre in Northwood Park.

Pre-school year funding welcomed A NORTHSIDE TD has welcomed the Government’s commitment to protect, in full, the free pre-school year with funding of €326 million in 2011. Dublin Central TD Cyprian Brady (FF) said: “This is an extremely important development as it reflects the aim of protecting to the greatest possible extent, the level of service currently provided for children and young people next year. “Around 65,000 children will be able to avail of pre-school care and education each year. “I know there are many children in my own constituency who are benefiting from this initiative and it is proving to be very successful.” Children are eligible for the scheme when they are aged between three years three months and four years six months on September 1 of the relevant year.”

IT’S been said that DIY enthusiasts are often so consumed by their hobby that they fail to perform in the bedroom. That’s not to say having an interest in home improvement affects your sex life but when it comes to decorating it’s easy to overlook the bedroom. A romantic bedroom can do wonders for your love life but sadly the one room we should cherish most suffers from ‘redecoration stagnation’. There’s a natural tendency to focus decorating energy on high traffic areas such as the kitchen and family room. However, creating a romantic sanctuary in the home means you’ll always have somewhere to indulge your wildest fantasies! A romantic bedroom should please all of the five senses to enhance intimacy and comfort. The bed is the focus of any bedroom and the most amorous rooms so make it as cosy as possible. Luxurious sheets and plush pillows are wonderful, but the real key is a comfortable mattress, so make sure to have one that feels heavenly and caresses both you and your partner. Try and get your hands on some mosquito netting, maybe

from a specialist store of you could pick one up white on holiday. It will come suspended from a wooden ring about the size of a dinner plate. Suspend the ring from the ceiling over your bed. The netting will fall around the bed like a veil. It creates a very romantic, ethereal look at a reasonable price. Lighting in the bedroom should be soft and filtered to spark off the romance. bright lights can detract from the ambience so use lower wattage light bulbs or those with a soft pink hue. For those special evenings nothing adds romance like the warm glow of candles. Scented candles can help induce the flames of passion but don’t get too carried away especially if you’re prone to snooze after sex. Make sure that lit candles are never left unattended. Speaking of smell here’s another great tip to get your partner in the mood for love. Gently wiping your light bulbs with a thin coat of perfumed oil can

Does Your Home Have Freezing Cold Rooms, Damp Walls or Mould Problems?

send calming or sensual scents throughout the bedroom. In addition, sprinkling dusting powder on your sheets can make them fragrant and silky. Scented sachets of lavender and rosemary also add to the air of romance. Keep your favourite CDs at your fingertips; soft music is one of the easiest ways to elevate your passionate mood. If it's noisy outside your bedroom window, hang thick curtains to muffle the sound. A peaceful bedroom retreat is the place to focus on each other, so keep distractions such as the television in another room. For a late-night indulgence, place strawberries and whipped cream on a small tray next to the bed. Champagne and champagne glasses also are ideal at the start of a romantic evening at home. Aside from the romance the bedroom is the one room you should be most comfortable in and it doesn't take much to get it a facelift. If a major paint job is out of the question brighten up the walls with inexpensive seascapes or other soothing prints. Another way to create a new look is to hang a wallpaper border midway around the wall. Choose a pattern with a bit of

your existing wall colour, but with other colours to complement a new look. If you are really creative, try stencilling the entryway or a particular area of the wall. Nothing makes a room look clean and new like a ‘change of scenery’, so rearrange your bedroom furniture. If your room is too small for a total rearrangement, reverse the position of your bed. If you have more room to work with, reposition everything in the room to give it a totally new look. Splash out when purchasing a duvet and sheets. Add some throw pillows in a variety of colours and sizes to add comfort and cosiness to your ‘new’ room. Re-root some of your kitchen plants and display them on your bedroom window sill to add new life to your room, or hang them in a bright corner. Also, make it a habit to pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers when you do your shopping and display them beside the bed. Flowers always add cheer and their aroma will lift your spirits. Your bedroom should be your sanctuary, a place that you look forward to being in, not just for romance and sleep, but to relax and enjoy. Pleasant dreams!

Choosing curtains AFTER you have spent time and money revamping your living spaces, the last thing you want to do is ruin your hard work by choosing the wrong curtains for your rooms. It doesn't matter if you want something simple, or something more complicated, the style is not the number one concern. It’s the colour that will make or break your room, so you have to know what you are looking for. Your first consideration might be what you have on your walls. If you have painted, you can go with a fabric that has a lot of motion to it. It can `be a nice floral pattern, or any other thing that strikes your fancy. If you have a wallpaper however, you might want to go for the one solid coloured drapes. You can find patterns of curtains to go with some wallpapers, but it’s tricky to find exactly what works well. One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing curtains is that they choose the exact same colour as their walls. This is not a good idea as it

makes the curtain and window blend into the room. You want your windows to be distinctive. You don't want it to look like you’re hiding them. You might be okay with the same colour as your carpeting, as long as your carpet is not close in shade to your walls. You should instead pick a colour out of your new décor. You have a main colour for your walls, and then you have your contrasting and complimentary colours that you have added. If you have chosen these colours from your paint sample strips when buying paint, you already have the colours you need. You might want to choose one of your colours that has been least represented in the room thus far, and choosing that for your curtains. Buying one tone curtains is

pretty simple. You just have to decide on the style you want, and then search for them in the right colour. If you are looking for a fabric, you have to find one with the preferred colour somewhere in the pattern. It doesn’t have to be the majority of the colour in the curtains, but it should be there. This will draw the eyes to your curtains and pull the room together. Once you have found a selection of curtains that might contain the colour you seek, you have to look at the other colours in the fabric. Do they go with the room in general? You may not know this until you can get them home, which can cause a problem. Try to shop where they have swatches you can take home to compare. If not, you should take your paint samples with you to hold up against the fabric. This will give you a better idea if you are on the right track, or if you have to keep searching.

A winter wonderland you won’t forget in France WE MAY well be sick to death of the snow here in Ireland but in the French Alps it’s an entirely different story. While back home we are forced to trudge our way through icy sludge and drive in hazardous conditions, we simply can’t get enough snow when it comes to a skiing holiday. If you’re planning a winter break to escape the unrelenting misery of recessionary Ireland, then allow us to personally rec-

ommend a suitable homefrom-home in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, the biggest ski area in the world. Morzine is just one of the French and Swiss towns that makes up this world famous ski region. With 288 ski runs spread over 14 resorts, the Portes du Soleil is nothing short of a Mecca for winter

sports enthusiasts. The Lodge Morzine is located just one hour’s drive from Geneva, a route regularly served by Aer Lingus (check www.aerlingus.com for the best prices). Offering luxury alpine accommodation in a traditional Haute Savoie building, The Lodge Morzine is just 1km away from the main town and all the ski lifts. To make life even easier, the complimentary shuttle bus passes right by its door.

The Lodge Morzine was originally built as a hotel in 1932 and has been redeveloped in recent years into 20 luxury apartments. There is a combination of one, two and three bedroom units that accommodate between two to eight people comfortably. All apartments are completed in a traditional alpine style, with homely furnishings throughout, giving a warm and cosy feel. Each apartment is furnished to a very high standard with bathrooms, open plan living and dining areas, spacious bedrooms with balconies and fully equipped kitchens with hot plates, fridge, mini oven and dishwasher. The apartments also have flat screen televisions with Sky TV and free WiFi access. The different size apartments mean that The Lodge Morzine can cater equally for everyone, from young families to couples to small groups. The self catering option is particularly suited to families travelling with young children, taking the pressure off Mum and Dad when it comes to containing mealtime tantrums. But the beauty of The

Lodge Morzine is that it offers the best of all worlds. Downstairs in ‘Base Camp’, the bar and restaurant, you can dine on a sumptuous four course meal or chomp away on a freshly cooked pizza – the choice is yours. Another major plus is that food from the restaurant can even be ordered up to your apartment. Breakfast is also available daily, if required. The bar is a great place to unwind after a day on the slopes, where skiers can swap their heroic stories or shoot the breeze over a game of pool. And yes – before you ask – they do have Guinness on tap. There are also excellent spa facilities available at The Lodge Morzine. All guests can relax their tired and weary bones in the sauna and Jacuzzi, indulge in a massage or avail of one of the day spa treatments. There is also gym for those who want to burn off some of that Christmas excess prior to hitting the mountains. The Lodge Morzine offers its own in-house ski hire service and you can book your skis, boots and poles in advance. This certainly beats wasting time in a packed ski hire outlet

by Tony McCullagh

when you could be out on slopes. There is also a secure ski locker room. The Lodge Morzine can even provide you with your lift passes if you book them in advance. Getting there couldn’t be easier. If you’re hiring a car in Geneva Airport, Morzine is very easily accessible (even without a sat nav, although it does help!). The Lodge Morzine can arrange competitively priced airport transfers to and from Geneva if you don’t want to hire a car.

One of the main attractions of The Lodge Morzine is the flexibility of the packages on offer. Even if you can’t afford to take a full week’s holiday, you can enjoy anything from a long weekend to a mid-week break (minimum stay is three nights). For full information on The Lodge Morzine and booking details, visit the website at www.thelodgemorzine.com, or alternatively email info@thelodgemorzine.com or phone 0033 (0) 450794734.

According to wrestler Jeff Jarrett aka ‘The King of the Mountain’, audiences will be treated to six fantastic matches and a night of physical soap opera. “TNA wrestling is huge in Ireland if our last sell out date was anything to go by,” he told Northside People. “We often get three generations of families – grandfathers, sons and grandchildren coming along to the shows. “Fans will not be disappointed and as always I’ll have my guitar with me in case I need to bash someone over the head with it in the ring. “It’ll be like a U2 concert in terms of entertainment coupled with sheer, physical drama.” On the night, the most dedicated and rowdy wrestling fanatics will be plucked from the crowd and treated to a meet-and-greet, autograph signing and photograph with their wrestling heroes. TNA President Dixie Carter said wrestling fans are in for a night of full force action. “These shows will be our biggest and best yet - and I'm so pleased our amazing Irish fans will get to be a part of them,” he stated. Tickets for the show start from €34.

ROAST CHRISMAS TURKEY SERVES 6 TO 8 INGREDIENTS 4kg turkey 1 large chopped onion¬ 2 cloves of chopped garlic 10 stripes of streaky bacon 1 sticks of chopped celery 1 tbs of chopped rosemary 1 tbs of chopped lemon thyme

Executive Chef Carlo Alambi. 250g minced pork 30g butter Zest of 1 lemon Salt and pepper Olive oil 75g breadcrumbs

METHOD

Preheat the oven to high, now we make the stuffing. Add the onions, garlic, celery, thyme, rosemary, lemon zest and butter in a pan and brown. When the mix has cooled add the bread crumbs and minced pork and mix well. When stuffing a turkey you get the best results by putting the stuffing between the skin and breast, this keeps the breast moist during cooking. Season the turkey with a lot of salt and pepper and olive oil. Now cover with tinfoil and roast for about 3 and a half hours or until the turkey juices run clear from the thigh when you pierce with a knife. Remove the tinfoil and put the streaky bacon over the turkey for the last half hour of cooking. When cooked take the turkey out of the oven and leave to rest for 20 minutes before serving. MERRY CHIRTMAS FROM ALL THE STAFF HERE AT CELESTINES.

the simple beauty behind the treatment

HEADACHES

Headaches. It’s been said that at least 90% of occcasional headaches are a result of nervous tension. While that may be true, it is also misleading and possibly dangerous, because a surprising number of environmental factors entirely unrelated to the state of your nerves may be the real culprit. Most people at some time in their lives have experienced headaches. Headaches can vary from the infrequent and trivial nuisance, possibly from too much drinking the night before, to a symptom of serious disease. Headaches is a broad term covering pain found in the neck, face, scalp, nose, throat

and teeth. With headaches, other types of discomforts can be experienced such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, visual disturbances, hearing problems and difficulty with balance. A single episode of severe headache that has not been experianced before, or headaches that accompany vomiting should be checked by a medical professional. This type of headache might have a serious cause. If a headache comes after a trauma or blow to the head then a consultation with a medical professional is also required. Serious headaches though only constitute a small percentage of headaches generally experienced. Recurring headaches that have occured over several months or years may have been treated with painkillers or anti inflammatories with varying degress of success. But have the

causes been addressed and treated? Osteopathically there are different kinds of headaches which have various causes. Tension headaches are frequently linked to stress. Contraction of the muscles around the neck squeeze and irritate some senstive nerves at the base and around the skull. Taking painkillers will dull the pain but, would treating the tension in around the neck and therefore treating the cause of the headache not be better? Gentle osteopathic treatment can help the tension and pain and provide longer relief, reducing the need for medication. Pain which goes across the forehead or in the scalp could be due to irritation of the joints at the base of the neck. Irritation of these joints can also lead to other feelings of nausea or an irritable bowel. Improving the movements of these joints will help reduce this kind of headache. The ostepath is not just interested in the joints, but also why the joints are not working properly. For example age and degeneration, whiplash type injuries that have not been properly treated, and posture could lead to stresses on these joints and thus cause pain. Any misalignment along the spine can lead to accumulated stresses in the neck and give headaches. Treating the misalignment of the spine will provide longer periods of pain relief as the underlying causes are being treated. Improper blood supply to and from the head can lead to migrainous types of headaches and sinus congestion. Blood needs to flow freely to and from the brain which is very sensitive to changes. Mechanical blockage by misalinged spine or tense muscles may impede blood flow and lead to some of the most uncomfortable types of headache. Adjusting these mechanical blockages to allow free flow of blood will help reduce if not stop this kind of headache. Other causes for headaches include improper diet, not drinking enough fluid, poor body position at work, visceral disturbances or hormonal imbalances. With so many types of headaches and different causes it becomes clear that headaches and their causes are unique to the individual. This requires the osteopath to take a detailed case history and examination, which will help to identify what is causing the headaches. The osteopath will then offer a personalised treatment plan. This would possibly lead to less headaches and because the causes may have been identified, long term relief and better quality of life will be experianced.

Yet with all the day to day stresses and pressures around it can seem that life is out to get you. We can feel thrown off balance, our beliefs shattered, lack of motivation and fearful. When this happens we lose our ability to think clearly and rationally and we lose sight of things. We constantly worry about different things that never happen and by doing this we waste years of our life that we never get back. Our emotions can gallop away from us and if we leave this unchallenged it can consume our everyday lives with negative thoughts and negative behavioural patterns. However, there is
