Highland adventure for local ventures

● HEAD FOR HEIGHTS: The Huntstown Ventures enjoy the view during their climb of Ben Nevis

HUNTSTOWN Ventures took advantage of the recent terfalls, sliding through weirs Easter break and headed to the Highlands of Scotland and cliff jumping from 40 feet into icy black pools - not for the for an action packed adventure camp. Based in Fort William, seven of the group took on the daunting task of climbing the highest peak in Britain and Ireland; Ben Nevis. Starting from sea level the group set off in a balmy Scottish 16 degrees, through the sunshine and into the clouds to stand on a snow covered peak at 1,344 metres, four and a half hours later. All debutants to the Scottish mountain range, the Ventures say they felt a great sense of pride on reaching the top and negotiating the descent; aided part of the way by some impro-

vised snow sleds. The seven mountaineers were part of a larger group of 12 Ventures enjoying the week. Having conquered the Scottish giant the daring dozen sought out further adrenaline rushes. Along the forest canopy they swung from rope to rope, tackled cargo nets and whizzed across zip lines with a bird's eye view of the tiny spectators below. Still not fulfilled, they then headed for the white waters of Inchree Falls to have a go at some ‘canyoning’; a mixture of rock climbing, plunging into wa-

faint hearted! Eager to squeeze one last activity into the short week the group headed to the foothills of Nevis Range to sample the best of Scottish mountain bike trails at the Mountain Bike World Cup track. After the series of action packed days the venture group headed south to Glasgow for a final day to relax and take in the sights. • The Huntstown Venture group meet weekly and is open to all young people aged 15-18. Childhood friend Emma King said Rachel’s family and pals were “very happy” with the how the night went. “The turnout was brilliant,” she said. “There wasn’t room for all the people who showed up. Some people had to stand outside. We’re all very happy with how it went.”

Supporters are now turning their attention to the coroner’s report into the death and plan to go through all the evidence in detail before deciding which way to go with the campaign. A number of relatives and friends have requested the full report from the coroner’s office, Emma told Northside People. “There was a lot of detail

“We weren’t able to do it ourselves while the (coroner’s) case was going on.” Dublin North West TD Dessie Ellis (SF) attended last week’s meeting in the Axis and said it was clear to him that Rachel should have been rehoused long ago rather than being left “isolated” in her Ballymun flat. cont. on page 2

Man jailed over kidnap bluff A BALLYMUN drug addict who stole e318,000 from a arresting officers he had been bank employee after a kidnapping bluff has been jailed forced to collect the cash over a drug debt. for four years. Gardai arrested Tony Quinn (30) after he had collected the bag of cash from a railway line around Broombridge Railway Station. Detective Sergeant Robert O’Reilly revealed that a Permanent TSB staff member had taken the money from her Phibsboro branch with permission after she’d been made to believe a gang had kidnapped her partner. The detective sergeant told Mr Dominic McGinn SC, prosecuting, that two ESB employees working on railway cables in the Broombridge Station area grew suspicious when they noticed a woman heave a large leather bag over a fence and had phoned emergency services when they saw Quinn retrieve the item. Det Sgt O’Reilly said he had already dispatched unmarked Garda cars to the area and officers arrested Quinn as he ran off with the bag. Quinn, of Park View, Park Close, pleaded guilty to the theft of e318,000 cash at Permanent TSB, Phibsboro on September 22, 2009. He has

by Aoife Nic Ardghail no previous convictions. Judge Martin Nolan said though he accepted Quinn had rehabilitated himself, that he had come “low in the pecking order in the organisation of the offence” and would probably not re-offend, he didn’t feel the “insidious” crime could escape a custodial sentence. Det Sgt O’Reilly told Mr McGinn that the bank employee had arrived into her branch in a “hysterical state” asking to speak with the assistant manager so she could get e400,000 required for her partner’s safe release. The criminals behind the operation phoned the woman while the assistant manager negotiated with the bank’s head office and told her to drop the money around Broombridge Railway Station. The woman remained in the area until she saw Quinn retrieve the bag. Det Sgt O’Reilly said Quinn had been sweating and out of breath as he ran from the scene with the bag and told

He co-operated with gardai and admitted there had been no kidnapping while he was detained in custody for one week. Det Sgt O’Reilly agreed with Mr Felix McEnroy SC, defending, that his client had been a “serious drug addict” at the time of the offence which was consistent with how he had appeared on arrest. The detective sergeant further agreed that Quinn is the only person to have been prosecuted in the case to date and that gardai are investigating threats made to his family. Mr McEnroy had submitted to Judge Nolan that his client should be treated as a first time offender because of his previous clean record. He said his client has been trying to get off drugs and rehabilitate himself. Mr McEnroy further submitted that Quinn had a good work history and strong family support.

Green light for Dublin 15 school THERE was some good news for Dublin 15 last month when the longawaited planning permission for a new school building was given the green light. The way is clear now for work on Mulhuddart National School to get underway, which has been welcomed by many especially the 270 pupils of the school who have been taught in prefabs until now. Dublin West TD and Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar described the planning approval as “tremendous news for Tyrrelstown and Mulhuddart”. “We can now look forward to a purpose-built national school with full facilities, and with the capacity to deal with the area’s rapidly growing population,” he said. “Parents and families have been campaigning for years for a permanent school building. “The new three storey building should be an excellent facility for the school with 24 classrooms, a library and resource room, and dedicated sporting facilities.” Local councillor Kieran Dennison said the new building is vital to accommodate the burgeoning population in the area. “The school is vital when the area has one of the highest birth rates in the country,” he stated. “I am very pleased that Mulhuddart NS and Tyrrelstown Educate Together schools, which is located on the same site, will now both get purpose-built facilities. “And with 60 acres of guaranteed open space and community facilities, this is a really great place to live and bring up a family.”

Vigil for Rachel contd from page 1 “Rachel should have been moved,” he believed. “There was a lot of anti-social behaviour in the block and her friends and family couldn’t visit. “This might not have happened if she had been moved. “BRL will also have to act to ensure it doesn’t happen again. There’s a small number of families still isolated in blocks affected by anti-social behaviour and they can’t have visitors either.” Deputy Ellis said Sinn Fein would be supporting a People Before Profit motion being put to Dublin City Council calling for an inquiry. “There’s a lot of unanswered questions about what happened to Rachel,” he added Deputy John Lyons (Lab), who was also at the meeting,

The council has so far declined to comment on details of the case but has said it “very much regrets the tragic death of Rachel Peavoy” and expressed sympathy with her children and her wider family on their sad loss. A spokesperson also told Northside People that it was endeavouring to maintain a good quality of life for tenants in the flat blocks during the ongoing demolition programme. “In his recommendation, the City Coroner advised that he would be writing to the City Council with regard to our policy on de-tenanting,” he said. “We await the coroner’s communication in this regard to which we will give due consideration.”

Northside pals set for Mongolia adventure THREE Northside friends set off last week to travel they could encounter despite on eBay,” he said. “We’ve spent about 12,500 miles across three continents, 22 countries and the fact that Shane was almost killed during their last adven- e14,000 on travel so far and three deserts to raise money for sick children. The trio, pals from childhood, are determined to make it to Mongolia and back in their 27-year-old Landrover without the support of a translator or support crew for the trip, which is likely to take almost three months to complete. Daniel Lambert (25) and

by Aoibhinn Twomey Shay Cloherty (24), both from Glasnevin, and Santry local Shane McGuire (24) set off from Rosslare on May 10. They are bracing themselves for run-ins with the mafia and bandits but are unfazed by the dangers and risks

ture. Four years ago the friends travelled across America where Shane was the victim of a frenzied knife attack that left him fighting for his life. It’s all water under the bridge now though, according to the mechanic who was stabbed nine times in the back by a group of Neo Nazis.

“It was a close one alright but it’s like it never happened,” Shane told Northside People. “It was a great trip and experience apart from the knife attack which happened two days before we were due to fly home. “When I recovered and returned home my family said: ‘right, you’re not going on any more trips’ but they know what I’m like. I love travelling and adventures so I have their full support now. “I’m really looking forward to the Mongolia trip and I’d prefer not to think of the dangers.” Shane and his friends are financing the trip themselves at a cost of between e20,000 and e25,000. However, they are hoping to raise e10,000 for the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation in Mongolia and Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin from donations and the publicity generated through regular video blogs that will be posted on the internet. Daniel explained that Mongolia was chosen as the destination as it is the furthest country you can drive to from Ireland with your own vehicle. “We know that this is a massive undertaking and challenge especially when we’re driving a Landrover that’s older than all of us and one that I bought with my phone

we estimate that we’ll spend up to e6,000 on fuel but we also have to factor in that there’ll be a lot of bribes involved in getting across some countries. “From what we know the guards at the border crossing presume because we’re westerners that we’ve loads of money so they won’t let us

across unless we pay a bribe. “None of us have any other languages so we’ll be completely out of our comfort zone.” Their choice of vehicle, a Landrover, which has been modified into a camper van, is also bound to throw up its own challenges, no doubt putting Shane’s mechanical expertise to the test. Another major difficulty the friends face will be on

their return trip where they will travel 8,000 miles across Russia. “Ideally, we’d like to avoid Russia and travel through the same countries as we did on our outward trip,” Daniel added. “But visas are a problem within a short space of time. “We know that on our drive through Russia some parts are well-known for being ruled by the mafia and

bandits so we’ll try our best to stop and hide our car somewhere safe in night-time hours.” Daniel, Shay and Shane hope to return to Irish soil by July 31. Anyone wishing to follow the video diaries of the trio or wishing to donate can visit the group’s Facebook page Dublin2 Mongolia or visit www.dublin2 mongolia.blogspot.com.

Unsung Heroes race heating up THE grand finale of Unsung Heroes is rapidly approaching and the excitement is certainly mounting. The local heroes involved in the initiative backed by Finglas and Blanchardstown Ford are battling for votes from the public in an effort to raise funds for the worthy causes they support. Top of the leader board at the moment is Father Dan Joe (St Frances Hospice) followed by Valerie Murphy (East Fin-

glas Scouts), Ellen Cogavin of Connolly Hospital, Wes Gill (Order of Malta), John McGrath (St John’s Ambulance) and 104/144 Blanchardstown Scout Leaders. The biggest climbers last week were Brian Flanagan and Seaghan Kearney. The heroes are asking supporters to vote daily and validate their vote by email as this is critical to their campaign’s success. Sponsors of Unsung Heroes include EBay, PayPal, Topaz, Burgess & Galvin Co,

Dunne Engineering, Wiltshire Farm Foods and Keelings Fruit and Veg. Tickets for the Unsung Heroes draw are also available at Blanchardstown and Charlestown Shopping Centre and Topaz Petrol Stations. First prize is e10,000, second prize is e5,000 and 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th prizes are for e2,500. A full list of Unsung Heroes nominees can be found at unsunghero.ie/ourheroes. John McKeown (22), of Virginia Drive, pulled a screwdriver on both taxi men at nearby Berryfield Road, Finglas, and told them to hand over money. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbing e100 from Mr David Dunne on January 8, 2010 and assaulting and attempting to rob Mr Darren Farrell on January 9, 2010. He also pleaded guilty to the unlawful taking of a vehicle at Glenhill Court, Finglas on March 16, 2010. He has 29 previous convictions, including a two year suspended sentence for theft which has recently been reactivated. Garda Eoin Conway told Mr Derek Cooney BL, prosecuting, that McKeown approached Mr Dunne’s taxi after he had dropped a fare to the Berryfield Avenue area of

Helping businesses in tough times

by Aoife Nic Ardghail Finglas, opened the door and threatened the driver with a screwdriver. Mr Dunne handed over money from his cashbox, fled the car and reported the incident to gardai. Gda Conway told Mr Cooney that McKeown later claimed he couldn’t remember the incident. The next day McKeown chased Mr Farrell from his taxi with a screwdriver at Berryfield Avenue after getting the cab from the Ardmore Hotel. The driver flagged down a passing Garda car after he had escaped McKeown and reported the attempted robbery. The taxi man, who was visibly shaken and had a cut on his hand, could still see McKeown rummaging through his car when he stopped the Garda car. Gda Conway said col-

leagues drove towards McKeown and chased him on foot over back garden walls as he fled the scene. The Garda said McKeown made some admissions to this offence when he was arrested a short time later. He agreed with Mr Garrett McCormack BL, defending, that his client had no previous convictions for violence at the time and had a serious drug addiction. Garda Graham Dillon told Mr Cooney that he saw a car with no headlights on driving towards him at Glenhill Court, Finglas, after he had received a call about a man damaging vehicles in the area. He said the car failed to stop at a junction, broke a red light and drove towards traffic on an inbound lane, causing two trucks and numerous cars to take evasive action. He said the car drove across two lanes of traffic, sped over speed ramps creating sparks from the vehicle’s underside, drove over a

roundabout and burst through park railings. Gda Dillon said the car forced pedestrians to get out of the way at Virginia Park and collided with a wall and fence. He said colleagues caught McKeown after he had abandoned the car and tried to escape. The Garda said McKeown smelled of alcohol on arrest. He agreed with Mr McCormack that his client had led a “chaotic lifestyle” at the time. Mr McCormack submitted to Judge Martin Nolan that his client’s early pleas in the robbery cases had spared the victims going through cross-examination in court. He said McKeown’s life “went off the rails” after his father was killed in a gangland shooting in 2006. Judge Nolan directed that the 18 month sentence begin at the end of the two year reactivated sentence.

Students generate career prospects in radio A GROUP of unemployed Northsiders are presenting and producing their own radio shows on a new temporary station this month. The budding broadcasters can be heard live on 107.8 Generate FM every weekend in May providing a range of news and current affairs programmes alongside music and magazine shows. The temporary station, which ran for the last few years as Liber8 FM and Digital Hub FM, is also being streamed live online. The station is being run by a core group of community programme makers aged from 14 up to 84, in partnership with Regenerate Media, Dublin City Council and the Digital Skills Academy. Eighty of the participants are students at the Digital Skills Academy, which provides Governmentfunded media training courses for people looking to upskill or retrain while out of work. Director of the Digital Skills Academy, Paul Dunne, from Marino, says involvement in the radio station has given hands-on training to a total of 250 students over the last five years. “Their course is in digital audio production, so this is a chance for the students to get real broadcast work experience and perform their skills so that friends, family and the general public can get to hear what they produce on Generate FM,” states Mr Dunne.

by Jessica Magee “Quite a number of our students have been previously employed in construction, retail or manufacturing. “They’re using this course to develop new skills for occupations that will be in increasing demand over the current years including digital audio production, web video, gaming, animation, film and music technology.” One of those students is Kate Garry, from Phibsboro, who used to work in a technical role at Newstalk radio station before she was a victim of job cuts in 2008. “I managed to work my way up in Newstalk without qualifications, but when I lost my job I decided to broaden my scope for employment and upskill in different digital media,” says Ms Garry. “I looked into a lot of different courses and many of them were very-theory based, but this course is great in that it’s really practical. “We’re using cameras and mixing desks, sound equipment, animation programmes, writing movie reviews and getting to produce radio programmes.” Five groups of students are each presenting an hour-long magazine show, which includes a

five-minute documentary, switching roles between producer, presenter, desk-operator and contributor. Raheny native Daragh Brophy is one of the tutors helping the students on live radio. A newsreader, reporter and music presenter with nine years’ experience at Q102, Phantom and INN, Daragh told Northside People that he’s really impressed with how the students are responding to the opportunities for live broadcasting. “I suppose what marks this course out is that participants actually have access to a genuine community-based station,” he says. “They get their hands dirty making real radio within weeks of starting. “We take them through the basics of recording and programme making, then they’ve the chance to start producing content. “We’ve already got some great documentaries and interviews ‘in the can’ with local celebrities and raconteurs. Listeners are really enjoying it so far and are giving us good feedback.” William Aggor, originally from Ghana and now living on Capel Street, says he is enjoying the hands-on experience of working on live radio. “My favourite aspect is news reading, but I’ve learnt lots of

skills including video-editing and producing,” states William. The 24-year-old previously trained in computers in Ghana and has done voluntary work in Dublin, training people from immigrant communities in IT. “I’m really enjoying the course, and I’d love to get a job in radio presenting or working in the media when it’s finished,” he adds.

A new start for professionals A UNIQUE programme that puts professional unemployed people back into the workplace is starting again this summer. Over 400 professional unemployed people joined ‘Begin Again’ before last December and 260 have returned to work. Now, the Department of Enterprise and Skills has announced details of the next Begin Again for the summer period. The Begin Again programme matches each person’s skills to a host company. A job placement is for three months, doing a work based assignment and a mentor is appointed to support each person placed. A short eight-day training programme in leadership and management is also part of the course.

It works by getting participants back into the workplace where they can maintain motivation and confidence. They can actively participate in securing their own future by meeting new contacts and networks and developing skills. The programme is designed for unemployed people who have transferable skills and experience. Participants have included engineers, accountants, sales, administration, management and operations people. It is open to applications from those on Social Welfare for three months or more. For more information go to the website: www.beginagain.ie and if interested register online.

Check on Your Health with McCabe’s Pharmacy TimeWise seeks foster carers for programme THE Daughters of Charity Child & Family Fostering Service provides a range of foster care options for children and young people in response to their individual needs. This includes long-term, shortterm, respite and special foster care. The significance of fostering for children and the care that foster families can offer them is enormous, providing warm, safe and secure home environments for children and young people. The Fostering Service is comprised of two teams - Lisdeel Fostering and TimeWise. Lisdeel Fostering provides longterm, short-term, respite foster care for children of all ages and TimeWise offers special foster care for

young people aged between 11-18 years. Lisdeel staff provide intensive training for foster carers before receiving a child into their home and on-going placement support. TimeWise is a special foster care service that offers young people aged 11-18 years ‘wrap around’ care and aims to support them in all areas of their life. A partnership between the Daughters of Charity Child & Family Service and the Health Service Executive, TimeWise is based on a model called ‘Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care’ (MTFC). The programme helps young people develop better relationships and life skills with the objective to improve outcomes for them so that

they can return home or, where this is not possible, to long-term foster placements. This is achieved by foster carers working in collaboration with the TimeWise team. Together they work with the young person for a defined period of time (generally the young person is placed with the trained MTFC foster carers for a 9-12 month period) to achieve better outcomes for the young person so they can return home when possible. The Fostering Service is currently seeking foster carers to provide Long-Term, Short-Term, Respite and Special Foster Carers. For more information see the advertisement on page 12.

14 house & home Preparing for the perfect bathroom - Tiling Wall Tiling Clearly some people have a natural talent for tiling. But to achieve a high standard in tiling under all circumstances requires many years’ experience. Indeed most of our tilers have spent their whole career only working in bathrooms. It always fascinates me to see the many and varied ways that a wall is tiled and tiling is something that many people would feel they would like to have a go at. No doubt you will have your own method. Here we shall describe how we proceed. ● My basic rule when tiling is to plan the layout well and recheck it before you start. If you can avoid falling into traps

its half the battle ● You will certainly need a quality tile cutters ● Walls are tiled by means of a batten. Normally 2x1” straight and of good quality and that’s levelled perfectly ● The wall is tiled from the batten up. When dry the batten is removed. We always tile the floor before laying the bottom wall tile ● Step out the tiles from floor to ceiling allowing for cuts top and bottom. ● Check the ceiling is level and not running at a slope ● Step out the tiles from wall to wall allowing for cuts each side ● The other key thing I try to maintain when tiling is to keep the grid structure intact

Raymond Nolan

Bathroom specialists, O’Connor Carroll, are experts at creating perfect bathrooms and over the coming weeks will be sharing their secrets with us. Here, they detail how they deal with tiling. rather than religiously following the batton or allow spacing between tiles to become bigger. We often use masking tape if necessary ● As always don’t compromise on adhesives or grouts you’re only deluding yourself by using cheap materials. ● Ensure the adhesives and grouts are fit for purpose. To enable us to grout same day we use a flexible fast setting

adhesive that dries rapidly and has higher adhesion qualities. This is a bagged adhesive that needs to be mixed. Invariably we use rapid set flexible in shower areas, around windows and where radiators will be hung. Also for heavier type tiles. Otherwise for less important areas good quality standard premixed adhesive is fine ● Ensure tile cuts are reasonable around windows and

doors ● We tend to use 2mm spacers between tiles for wall tiles ● Window tiling is difficult to master even for so called experienced tilers. Again my advice is to first try to get the grid completed around the window before the cuts. Some tilers use a batten for this when tiling over the window. I tend to use a fast setting adhesive which will hold the tiles better and masking tape. But be warned this takes time to master. The process is; lay some tiles. Tape them to previous tiles. Allow to dry for a short time. Repeat. Once you have the grid in place then proceed with the window cuts and end wall cuts ● Small mosaic borders are also best tiled using a rapid setting adhesive.

The trend among golfers who only attend an Osteopath to treat injuries is changing. Golfers are becoming more and more aware of how regular Osteopathic treatment can better prepare them, by improving poor body mechanics which are causative factors in the injuries. Muscles, tendons and ligaments that are in a state of irregular tension are more prone to damage than those that are relaxed and not under constant strain. By addressing these weaknesses Osteopathic treatment helps to reduce the injury potential and increase fitness and strength. Osteopaths are also frequent members of the medical teams on major golf tours. The golf swing is the most important component of the game and involves rotation through the whole body to generate the energy to strike the ball. The maximum potential for the swing depends on the bony mechanical structure of the body to be balanced and mobile. Compromised body mechanics reduces the efficiency of the body and so the swing. Poor mechanics also increase the potential for injury. As the swing begins strain is put on the wrists, to elbows through the shoulders. The whole spine then goes into severe rotation down through the pelvis and hips, through the legs, knees, ankles and the feet. A strong balanced pelvis and mobile joints are essential to maximise the potential of the golf swing. If they are not, then the muscles, ligaments and tendons take the strain. These soft tissues are not designed to take strain, they are designed for mobility. This is why injuries like golfers elbow, wrist strain and knee injuries are common. Low back and shoulder strain are among the most common of golf related injuries and are by far the most debilitating. The human body was designed to be balanced and in harmony. Falls, knocks, accidents etc…. cause this balance and harmony to be disrupted. Bony components and joints can be damaged which causes the muscles and soft tissues attached to them to become tense and strained. This sets up compensation through the body causing anything from poor posture to chronic mechanical breakdown, depending on the severity of the injuries received. Any injury sustained from as early as childhood has the potential to remain in the body if left unchecked. Sometimes we don’t take minor injuries seriously, but enough minor injuries on top of each other can be problematic. We tend to accept the fact that “my low back has always been a bit achey” or “ I have always had a dodgy shoulder”. When we are young these remain minor, but as the years creep up on us these little niggles become the big problem. This need not be. One of the Osteopathic principles is “Structure Governs Function” so a body that was designed to be mobile and versatile will be severely hindered by structural restrictions. It is our aim to minimise or correct any of these restrictions allowing the body to return to its natural balance.

Visiting your Osteopath early after an injury can minimize the impact upon the body. Regular visits will greatly reduce the possibility of further injuries. Even if you have poor posture, imbalanced body mechanics and are carrying injuries for years Osteopathic treatment can help you get the most from your system. Therefore it is obvious that treatment which addresses the imbalance and immobility in the bony skeletal system is crucial to the long term performance of the golfer, any sportsperson and anybody wanting to get more from their body. So, regular Osteopathic treatment can, Treat acute and chronic injuries, Improve the general body mechanics, Promote flexibility and strength, allowing the maximum potential to be achieved, which includes better health. Not to mention better golf. For queries any of the Articles contact Tony O’Brien at the Littlejohn Clinic, 122A Cromwellsfort Road, Walkinstown. Telelphone: 01 4560300.
