Local support for little girl Kym Continued from page 1 The situation is unsustainable, especially as Kym is still a growing child. But the tight-knit community in Dublin 15 has now come together to fundraise for Kym and her unassum-

A fun ‘Camel Racing’ night will also take place at Westmanstown Sports and Conference Centre on November 17 and there’s bucket collections and bag packing planned for local supermarkets in December. “We are also hoping to get all the local Dublin 15 schools involved in a ‘Wear Crazy Shades for Kym’ day on Friday, November 10, where the children would

Lidl plan open day Jack Gleeson AN OPEN is being held in Ballymun on Tuesday, September 19, to provide information to the local community on a new Lidl development in the area. Earlier this year local councillors voted to dispose of a vacant three acre, €2.5 million site just off Main Street on Balcurris Road where three blocks of flats once stood.

Lidl Ireland GMBH was selected as the preferred bidder after a tendering process. The new development is expected to consist of a Lidl outlet, four other retail units and 150 student apartments. Ballymun has been lacking in shopping facilities since the closure of Tesco three years ago, with only one major retailer, SuperValu, now serving the local community.

Ballymun Sinn Fein councillor and local resident Noeleen Reilly has welcomed the announcement that Tony Bamford, TBP, Planning and Development Consultants are holding the open day on behalf of Lidl. “It is great to finally see some development in relation to shops in Ballymun,” she said. “This has been a long campaign by residents and local stakeholders who were left high and dry

during the regeneration. “This development is certainly a lot different than what was promised during the regeneration but it is a really positive move after years of many false promises.” It’s hoped the Lidl centre will be a catalyst for further development in the area. “Ballymun is a very attractive place to do business and it shows great confidence in the area that Lidl are looking to develop there,” Cllr Reilly added. “The open day is an opportunity for the community to have a look at the plans and get feedback on any possible issues. I would encourage as many people as possible to attend the event on September 19.” The consultants say the public open event will allow the community to view the proposed plans. An application must be lodged to Dublin City Council by September 22. The open day takes place on September 19 from 4pm to 8pm in the Atrium of the Ballymun Civic Centre.

Water refunds are nothing to be smug about

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

T

HERE was a serious outbreak of smugness last week as the Government announced a refund for those who paid their water charges, with cheques expected to plop through letterboxes before Christmas. I wasn’t immune to being smug myself, as I chided the “suckers” in my newsroom who had been compliant members of society and coughed up at least some portion of their water bills. At one point, to be honest, I had almost capitulated but my resolve to withhold payment was strengthened by the cacophony of opposition to water charges in the run up to the 2016 General Election. With water emerging as the dominant election issue,

politicians of all hue scrambled to find a solution to the fiasco. Like many others, I hedged my bets and held out until a new Government was elected so I could see which way the wind would blow on the issue. I can’t personally claim to be part of the anti-water charges movement as I didn’t attend any of the mass protests. But in withholding my payment, I like to think I played a small role in their abolition. Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy arguably earned a right to be smugger than usual last week when the Cabinet signed off on the refunds, describing the news as “a vindication” of the anti-water charges movement. “The lesson is clear – protest and boycotts work,” Deputy Murphy declared. He warned the Government of similar opposition if any attempt is made to create a back door for water bills through so-called excessive usage charges. Sinn Féin’s spokesperson for Housing and Local Government, Eoin Ó Broin, was also quick to hail the refunds as a victory for the Right2Water movement. But all the talk of water seemed to have gone to poor Eoin’s head when he stated that it was important that money for the refunds was not taken from priority areas such as “hosing” and health. I’m pretty sure he meant “housing”. For all the smugness generated by

the water charges debacle, it’s far from a laughing matter. In addition to the €173m in refunds, the cost of refunding customers will be around €5m to cover letters, additional call centre staff and a public information campaign. A case of

Ciarán visits GAA camp THREE-TIME All-Ireland winner Ciarán Kilkenny took time out from his training for Dublin’s All-Ireland adventure to meet children taking part in the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp in Erin’s Isle GAA Club, Finglas. This year, the GAA donated 513 free places to local Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps worth over €30,000 to children in School Completion Programmes and 18 kids from Finglas took part in the Erin’s Isle camp. The School Completion

Programme aims to increase the number of children who remain in primary and second-level schools. And the Kellogg's GAA Cúl Camps provide them with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity during the summer holiday. Charles Harrison, National Cúl Camp Coordinator, GAA said the GAA was committed to ensuring that as many young people as possible derive the health benefits which accrue from getting 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day. “As an all-inclusive sport-

ing body, we in the GAA want to ensure that children at risk of or experiencing educational disadvantage in the community experience the joys of Gaelic Games,” he added. “We are delighted to be able to provide these places to School Completion Programmes across Ireland. “We have been working successfully with Tusla for the last three years and we hope this relationship can continue to blossom.” All the coaches and kids at Erin’s Isle will be backing the Dubs this Sunday.

Boko-Haran insurgences in Northern Nigeria. Last March several communities in Kafanchan, Southern Kaduna of Nigeria, were attacked leaving a death toll of over 100 and uncountable casualties. Most of the dead were men, slaughtered when they stayed to fight as their families fled to safety. The conflict is on the rise and unfortunately more and more people are getting displaced, with women and children the most vulnerable. Local photographer and journalist Nwabuogo Enwerem, a volunteer with Near Media Coop, travelled to Nigeria with the support of the Simon Cumbers Media Fund and visited camps in Abuja, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Lagos State in Nigeria. The photos are on display at Blanchardstown Library up to September 28.

Latest IBAL litter survey highlights dumping problem in Northside areas Jack Gleeson THE North Inner City and Ballymun are both still suffering from litter problems according to the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey. Ballymun has improved slightly from last year with the area now deemed ‘moderately littered’ but the inner city came second last in the list of 40 areas surveyed. The other Northside areas in the list - Dublin City Centre and Dublin Airport Environs - were both deemed clean. The Airport environs were deemed a ‘litter blackspot’ when first surveyed five years ago. IBAL says a lack of community involvement explains why certain disadvantaged urban areas continue to be

plagued by litter despite improvements elsewhere. An Taisce assess litter levels in 40 towns and cities on behalf of IBAL for the survey and 80 per cent of areas were found to be clean, with a top tier of 16 towns deemed ‘cleaner than European Norms’. While no area was branded a ‘litter blackspot’, Galvone in Limerick City was again seriously littered, while Dublin North Inner City and Cork City North were littered. “We haven’t seen as much improvement in these social housing areas, where communities are often transient, social neglect is evident, and community groups and tidy towns committees are lacking compared to in mixed communities,” says Conor Horgan of IBAL. “Without

these volunteer forces supporting the efforts of the council, these areas will simply not be clean on a sustained basis.” Despite improvements in Dublin’s North Inner City, the inspectors highlighted a dumping ground near Sheriff Street Park, rubbish along the canal pathway at Guild Street and several sites suffering from “long-term abuse and neglect” rather than just casual litter. Horgan says dumping is now a real issue. “Dumping is the new litter,” he said. “Be it in cities or in towns, we enjoy a much cleaner environment than 15 years ago, but litter has not gone away. “Dumping appears to be on the increase, and the more we ask people to pay for waste disposal, the

greater an issue it is likely to become. It may not be as widespread, but dumping is the new litter in many respects.” The business group agrees with the ‘polluter pays’ principle behind the mandatory pay-by-weight collection system, but believes some of money raised should be ringfenced for councils to tackle the increased dumping that will result from people looking to evade the charges. Responding to the survey results, Mary Fitzpatrick of Fianna Fáil in Dublin Central called on Dublin City Council to re-introduce domestic bin collections in the area with a waiver scheme for low income households. “Privatisation of domestic bin collections in Dublin’s North Inner City has not worked,” she said.

Dublin City Childcare Committee is one of 30 City and County Childcare Committees operating nationally. We are the first point of contact for anyone seeking advice, information or support in relation to early childhood care and education within Dublin City. Our focus is to develop, support and enhance early childhood services in Dublin City.

Attention Parent/Guardians: Dublin City Childcare Committee Autumn Parent Event Wednesday 20th September from 6.45pm – 9.00pm The Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street, Dublin 8 ‘Raising Emotionally Healthy Children; the joys and the challenges’ By guest speaker Paul Gilligan CEO, Psychologist and Author of ‘Raising Emotionally Healthy Children’ Dublin City Childcare Committee will also provide information on the National Childcare Funding Programmes The information provided will include the More Affordable Childcare Scheme recently launched by The Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Other topics will include relevant supports such as the Access and Inclusion Model and tips on Choosing Childcare.

'Raising Emotionally Healthy Children - the joys and the challenges' Is it getting harder to raise emotionally healthy children? For many parents, the challenge of this seems daunting. The pressure to achieve academically, living in a world dominated by social media and “likes”, the relatively availability of drugs and alcohol are all issues which drive many parents to feel they want to wrap their children in a protective blanket. But for most Irish children life is good. Growing up in Ireland has never been safer. There has never been as much opportunity. We are producing emotionally healthy, mature young people who, in general, have a balanced healthy approach to life. How parents are achieving this and how they themselves remain emotionally healthy is the key theme of this talk by psychologist, CEO and author of ‘Raising Emotionally Healthy Children’ - Paul Gilligan.

This event is free of charge for parents within the Dublin City area To book a place or for more information, visit our website www.childcareonline.ie or Call Dublin City Childcare Committee on 01-8733696 or email info@dccc.ie

PETS DOGS TRUST CANINE COLUMN

Neutering dogs – fact versus fiction Corina Fitzsimons

W

E ARE delighted to let you know that the brand new series of ‘Dog Tales with Andrea Hayes’ returns to TV3 on Thursday, September 14, at 8:30pm! The first episode features Blossom the Lurcher, who gave birth to the largest litter of puppies we have ever seen in our rehoming centre, so we think it is very important to talk about neutering, which we hope will prevent any further unplanned and often unwanted litters of puppies in Ireland. Many myths and old wives’ tales exist around the subject of neutering, such as dogs will gain weight, the procedure will change a dog’s personality or it is best to allow a female dog to have a litter or a first heat. costs of unplanned pregnancies and Is it expensive to have my dog neu- raising puppies. tered? Will it change my dog’s personality? The cost of having your dog neutered is usually dependant on your dog’s size. Neutering can encourage calmer, Neutering prevents the unnecessary more predictable behaviour – helping to

make the dog a more suitable family pet. It can also help reduce aggressive and unwanted sexual behaviour, preventing fighting, mounting and destructive behaviours. Dogs that have been neutered are also less likely to mark their territory or stray.

Female dogs usually come into season for about three weeks, twice a year. Whilst in season she may act strangely – trying to run away in search of a mate and will need to be kept away from male dogs. Male dogs’ behaviour can also change greatly when a local female dog is in season –they may be desperate to escape, even running onto busy roads or jumping from high windows. My dog is a pedigree – I will have no problem getting homes for his/her offspring! There are lots of unwanted pedigree dogs in pounds and shelters around Ireland right now looking for homes. Neutering is a humane way to reduce the stray dog population, preventing thousands of unwanted puppies being born each year, that may be cruelly abandoned or needlessly destroyed.  Pregnancy can cause significant health risks to your dog, causing her discomfort and to behave oddly. Neutering your dog also avoids the inconvenience and mess of having seasons. Early neutering can reduce the risk of some cancers developing in later life for both male and female dogs. It also prevents females suffering from poten-

tially fatal womb infections known as pyometras. Is it not best to let my female dog have her first heat or a litter of puppies before she is spayed? There are no health-related reasons for waiting until after her first season before spaying. It is often in the first season that female dogs get ‘caught’ as their owners haven’t realised they were in season! Will my dog get fat if I have him/her neutered? Dogs will not put on weight if they are fed sensibly and get enough exercise and your vet or vet nurse will discuss this with you when your dog is being discharged from their practice after neutering. Bran is a real foodie who adores his grub so getting to know him shouldn't take too long. He seeks affection and attention but prefers a hands off approach, so he would be happiest snuggling at your side rather than being petted and fussed. Bran needs an adult home, preferably one that's familiar with Collies and their kooky ways. He's adorably handsome and a firm favourite with the staff in Dogs Trust, so if you're looking for a gentleman to stick to your side like glue, Bran could be the one for you. Bran may be an older chap but that doesn't stop him! He absolutely adores his walks and is an agile chap who would love long rambles with his new family. If you think you can offer Bran a loving home, contact Dogs Trust on 01-8791000.

Airport explains increase in noise over Santry Jack Gleeson THE Dublin Airport Authority (daa) has said it’s doing its best to minimise aircraft noise at night over the Santry area. Locals have complained of an increase in night flights in recent months, and the daa says it’s because some aircraft have to be diverted over the Santry area due to essential upgrade work on the main runway. Local Fianna Fail councillor, Darragh Butler, passed on complaints to the daa, who responded with a detailed outline of why residents may have experienced an increase in noise on certain nights. The authority says work on the main runway began last November and is due to continue at least until spring 2018. “It can only be carried out in a narrow time frame

at night between the hours of 11pm and 5am when the airport is least busy as the work requires the full closure of the main runway at Dublin Airport,” the response to Cllr Butler reads. The daa explained that its secondary runway is used for flights while the work is being carried out and most are directed by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) to approach from the north, as this is the least populated area. However, on occasions wind direction forces a southerly approach, which brings aircraft over the Santry area. “The IAA's Air Traffic Control Service makes the decision on which runway approach is to be used based on meteorological conditions at the time, usually wind direction and strength,” the daa said. “For safety reasons, aircraft must land and take off into the

wind.” Since the main runway work began last November, almost 78 per cent of flights (3,758) have used the secondary runway from the south and 1,071 from the north, which brought aircraft over Santry. The daa also point out that all decisions are made based on wind direction and strength measured at the airport, which can be different than the wind felt on a ground just a few kilometres away. This could explain why some residents in Santry have wondered why they are experiencing noise when the wind feels relatively calm. “The reduction of aircraft noise on neighbouring communities is the joint responsibility of the airport operator, the Irish Aviation Authority and the airlines that operate at Dublin Airport,” the daa added in its response.

▪▪ Night work on the main runway at Dublin Airport will continue into spring 2018. “I can assure you that we take concerns regarding aircraft noise very seriously and strive to do all we can to minimise any adverse impact on both the communities and the environment by the operation of Dublin

Airport.” Meanwhile, Dublin Airport’s Community Fund is officially now open for applications until October 13. The new €10 million Community Fund will invest €400,000 per year over the

next 25 years in local projects focussed on areas such as environment and sustainability, sports and recreation, social inclusion and community development, health and wellbeing, and culture and heritage.

The fund will support projects in communities around the airport from Santry south of the airport to Rolestown in the north and from Tyrrelstown on the west to Portmarnock on the east.

s a local newspaper serving the Northside of Dublin for

It may sound like a well-worn cliché but it’s true: there is something about the Northside that sets it apart from any other part of the country. The Northside has produced many famous names from the worlds of television and radio, not to mention its fair share of Hollywood stars and even an Oscar winner! Northsiders have also fea-

tured strongly in literary works: for instance, would Roddy Doyle have been able to write about any other part of the city with the same degree of warmth, humanity and humour? It’s doubtful. Since 1987, Northside People has been happy to give a voice to the unsung heroes of our local communities – our business people, our entrepreneurs, our activists, our volunteers; many of them just ordinary people doing extraordinary things. It’s the same with sport. Some of today’s successful sports stars, national and international, all started out in

Awards COMMUNITY CATEGORIES

Please tick the category of your choice Volunteer of the Year Without the work of volunteers, our communities would be a poorer place. Who is the first person who comes to mind and why when you hear the word volunteer? Business in the Community Award We all know of local businesses that not only provide a valuable service within the community, but also go that extra mile to support their local customers. Be it through generous sponsorship or a commercial premises taking pride in its appearance, businesses serve as the commercial heartbeat of our towns and villages. But some really stand out. We want to know which ones. Community & Neighbourhood Group of the Year Award This category is for any local group across a range of areas that helps make a valuable contribution to your community. Why are they so important? What vital role do they play in enriching the area? Have they made a difference to your life? Tell us about them. Best school in the community This is going to be one of the most closely contested categories as schools play such a vital role in our communities, often over and above the area of education. While academic excellence certainly merits a nomination, there are a multitude of other reasons why schools – big or small – should be entered into this category.

Preparation is everything for a perfect wedding day I T GOES without saying that the bride and groom should look their best on the big day. But nature is going to need a helping hand to make sure those wedding photographs are picture perfect.

The key to perfect makeup is finding the right balance. Your cosmetics should be camera friendly and you’ll need to ensure the effect is not too dramatic and definitely not pale and uninteresting. Regardless of modern convention, you don’t have to fork out a small fortune on a professional beautician

to get the perfect wedding day glow. Choose a foundation that matches the skin tone, otherwise you risk ending up

looking like you’re wearing a mask in the photographs. Blend the foundation using your fingertips or a damp sponge, preferably in

natural light. And make sure you avoid that dreaded tidemark. Softly outline your eyes using a brown kohl pencil. Blend your chosen eye colours into your natural eye

shape. Remember, the goal is to enhance your existing features, not to create new, unnatural looking ones. The eyebrows frame the face, so ensure they are well

shaped and symmetrical. If necessary, use a light brown pencil to further enhance them. Try to avoid trendy looks such as glittery eyeshadow or blue nail polish or you

might be embarrassed to show your wedding pictures to your kids 10 years from now. To get your lips looking kissable, exfoliate them first with a toothbrush. Moisturise and then allow some time for it to be absorbed. Apply lipstick with a lip brush, blot, and then apply lip liner in a similar shade all over the lips. This will help ‘set’ the lipstick so that you won't be left with any telltale outline. Dot a little lip-gloss onto the centre of the bottom lip to create a pout effect. Remember, traditional red lipstick makes the teeth look whiter. For the finishing touches, dust a little translucent powder over the face, and then apply a little blush on the cheekbones and temples to define the bone structure. You should practice your make-up look before the big day. For a final practice run, put on the dress and veil and see the complete effect – but be careful not to smudge the dress! If the gown is simple and classic, the hair and makeup should be too. Make sure the dress colour doesn’t clash with the makeup colours. Of course, these days grooms are as self-conscious as brides about sprucing up to have themselves looking fresh and sharp at the altar. Many men tend to ignore daily grooming advice so grooms need to get themselves into a ‘beauty routine’ a few weeks before the wedding, paying particular attention to hair and skin.

HONEYMOONS

Delicious destinations for happy honeymoons A FTER all the excitement of the big event the happy couple’s first trip as married partners should be a relaxing, romantic and glamorous holiday.

And the ideal honeymoon for most is a stress free break in an exotic destination with plenty of sunshine and culture. Our grandparents probably never got further than the Isle of Man for their honeymoon while our parents were lucky if they managed to get any kind of a holiday abroad. However, these days the world really is your oyster when it comes to choosing the ideal honeymoon location. Always popular with newly-weds, Italy is a romantic and beautiful country, from the sophisticated elegance and natural beauty of Sorrento to the inspiring energy of Rome. Competing with Italy in the romantic destination stakes is the Dubrovnik Riviera in Croatia. The area enjoys an old world atmosphere and unspoiled beauty, coupled with top class hotels in stunning locations and boasting panoramic views of the Adriatic and Elaphite Islands. Many Irish long-haul honeymooners are now opting for Mauritius - often described as the ultimate paradise with white sandy beaches, coral lagoons and sweeping sugar plantations. Mauritius has dozens of quiet romantic hideaways and has traditionally been one of the most popular honeymoon destinations with lots of top-class resorts to choose from. St Lucia is another honeymoon hot spot. The island is one of the most scenic in the Caribbean, with a stunning coastline of powder fine sandy beaches overlooked by volcanic peaks. It’s the perfect post-wedding destination for a quiet and relaxing escape. Further afield, New Zealand is a simply stunning destination. A country of incredible contrasts you can climb a glacier, hike across a volcano, swim with dolphins, watch whales or just bask on a beautiful beach. Thailand is another choice for the adventurous couple. The South East Asian country has great value hotels with excellent facilities and world-renowned hospitality, stunning beaches, rainforest adventures, fascinating culture and bargain basement shopping. Lanzarote is another great destination for fantastic picture perfect honeymoon snaps. Couples can laze away by the beach or pool or take advantage of vibrant and varied night life in the island’s many restaurants, clubs and bars. Newly weds feeling energised by love can enjoy jet skiing or wind surfing while a romantic trip to the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park is certain to take the breath away.

▪▪ Take time to relax and enjoy each other’s company with as few distractions as possible.

▪▪ Do the simple things together. Portugal is another honeymoon hotspot. The 160km costal stretch along the Portuguese Algarve boasts spectacular scenery, warm seas and a fantastic sunny climate. Renowned for its spectacular beaches, the Algarve is dotted with hidden coves and relaxing beaches where the water is calm. Grooms might take note of the 30 golf courses in the region while brides might be tempted by the shopping opportunities with an abundance of cheap handmade silver, ceramics, leather goods and jewellery on offer in the markets. Majorca - the largest of the beautiful Balearic Islands – has long been a favourite with Irish newly-weds. Majorca has a typical Mediterranean climate. In Summer the average temperature is 23º Celsius and the skies remain blue throughout the season.

▪▪ The Maldives is a great honeymoon destination.

Top ten tips for honeymoon bliss Here are ten tips to help make sure the happy honeymoon couple stay that way – at least until they get back home. 1. Be sensible with your budget. Does your wallet allow for a couple of nights in a quiet hotel at home in Ireland, a round-theworld trip, or something in between? You don’t want to start married life with a massive honeymoon bill to pay off. 2. Discuss your idea of the perfect vacation. Who likes sports? Who likes sun? Who wants to explore an exotic destination? 4. Use a travel agent. It doesn’t cost any more and in fact usually works out cheaper. A travel agent also reduces stress as they’ll make all the arrangements so all you have to do is turn up at the airport and take off to your dream destination. 5. If you’re going abroad, leave plenty of time to make sure your passport is current and you have the visas needed. If inoculations are required, get them well before the wedding. 6. When you make reservations, let everybody know you’re on honeymoon. You may get upgraded to a better room at no charge, receive a welcome bottle of champagne, and who knows what else. 7. Protect your privacy. This is especially important if you have a destination wedding where the guests tend to hang around. A honeymoon should be just for the two of you. No kids, no pets, no company. 8. Be considerate of your partner’s wishes. A new husband mightn’t enjoy shopping for shoes while many brides are unlikely to be impressed by a visit to the golf course. 9. Splurge a little, it’s your honeymoon! Do something special that you wouldn’t normally do on holiday. Spend a little extra for a room upgrade, or the honeymoon suite. Plan a romantic dinner at a gourmet restaurant or go on a sunset cruise. 10. When packing for your honeymoon, think about taking along some romantic items like candles, massage oil and some new lingerie.

EDUCATION

The art of good reading READING is an essential part of learning, and while it might seem like it’s simply a matter of turning the pages, there are ways to make sure you get the most out of your books. Most students open their books, read until they finish, lose interest or fall asleep. Then they convince themselves that their concentration, comprehension, and

speed are poorer than everyone else's. If this sounds familiar, take heart - you are not alone. You need to recognise that reading may be the most demanding work that you will be required to do and that nearly everyone reports difficulty with the volume of reading assigned to them. So how are you supposed to get through that moun-

tain of reading? The first thing to keep in mind is that no one realistically expects you to read every single item that is given to you. This is just not possible, unless of course you don’t eat or sleep. Once you realise that this is the case you need to turn your attention to trying to make your reading more effective so that you are able to recall what

you’ve read. Reading from cover to cover won’t help you to retain information. You have to realise that you’re not reading a novel; you are collecting information. The following tips are designed to help you become a more effective reader. 1. Read the material more often but for shorter periods of time. Most students can read for 20 to 30 minutes without losing concentration. Studies have shown that learning is improved by changing tasks each hour, spreading the work over time and dipping into it more frequently. 2. Read groups of words at a time and don’t mouth them. Read as though you’re skimming for information, not as though you are practising a speech you plan to recite. Your brain can read faster than your mouth. Speed and comprehension will increase if you read in meaningful phrases. 3. Figure out ‘why’ you are reading the material. Establish a context by beginning with an overview of the material. This will improve your comprehension and retention. Begin by reading the introduction, headings, charts, graphs, diagrams, conclusion, and summary. Then take a minute to think about the material before beginning to read in depth. 4. Read with a purpose. Don’t just begin reading. Before you read ask yourself some questions and then note the answers or the most important points where they occur. Establish a list of questions, either by turning the headings into questions or by looking at your class notes. Then read with the intention of answering these questions. Check the margins when you think you've found answers. It's better not to take notes, highlight or underline at this point; you won't know which are the most important points until you are finished. Read through the material again and focus on your checks in the margin while deciding which points are the most important. It is only at this point where you will be able to make an informed opinion.

MOTORING

Kia Picanto is a great city car Seán Creedon AFTER a few weeks driving some luxury cars, it was back to a fairly normal, small car last week, the latest edition of the Kia Picanto. This is definitely a car for urban dwellers, or it could possibly be used a starter car for a singleton or a second family car, in the city or country. As a nation we are not huge fans of small cars and their total sales in 2016 was just three per cent of the Irish market. Another difficulty for the Picanto is that its cousin, the Hyundai i10, is the big seller here. This latest version of the Picanto, with prices starting at just over €13,000, should appeal to a lot of people who don’t want a big car. I think it would be ideal for a first-time buyer, who might be on a tight budget or may-

be the downsizer, who hasn’t yet got the free travel pass. Getting into Dublin city is now a bit of a challenge, but if you do manage to do it, it’s good to know that the Picanto is very easy to park and so small it doesn’t really need a reversing camera. This new version is certainly an improvement from the previous one and while it costs around €500 more now, there is a better spec available. It has a longer wheelbase, but the car itself is not longer than the previous version. The Picanto has been with us since 2004 and after a few revamps we now get the third generation. Inside there is good leg and head room, but at that price you don’t get lots of luxury. Well I suppose you can’t have it every way. This model has Kia’s famous ‘Tiger Nose’ grille and coupled with LED lights, the front is very attractive.

▪▪ The Kia Picanto is a great car for getting around the city in. There is room for five people, but obviously it would be more comfortable with just two people in the back seat. The boot space has been increased, but there is still

no spare wheel, just the dreaded repair kit. But it had a good old-fashioned style hand brake. The entry level has Bluetooth, leather steering wheel, electric front win-

dows and body-coloured door handles and mirrors. As with most cars the higher the spec, the more money you will pay. My top of the range model had Autonomous Emer-

gency Braking, (EBA), which seemed strange in such a small car. But of course you can crash into the person in front of you in a small or large car. It was fine to drive around

town, but tended to be a bit noisy. And the power wasn’t great, especially if I had a few adults on board. I still think it would be ideal for someone buying their first car or as a runaround.

HOUSE & HOME

Look to City Tiles & Bathrooms for top quality and choice THE definition of luxury is the non-essential qualities. It’s those desirable items that add pleasure or comfort but are not absolutely necessary. The 2017 Pelipal collection makes the non-essential standard, so that every bathroom design becomes desirable. Pelipal bathrooms are manufactured in the latest finishes, to the highest standards and with the kind of innovative features that you would only expect to see with high price tags. Creating luxury with affordability is why this German manufacturer has achieved year on year success since being introduced to City Tiles & Bathrooms in

2012. Pelipal’s commitment to the very highest standards in innovation, design and quality has seen the product positioned as number one in the German market.

Pelipal sees hi-spec contemporary design as the starting point, in turning the bathroom from a purely functional space into a luxurious sanctuary in today’s busy world, and this is precisely what customers are looking for. Pat Roche, Managing Director at City Tiles & Bathrooms, says that Pelipal’s phenomenal success is no surprise. “Irish consumers have become very savvy, and rightly so,” he explains.

“High-end bathrooms with eye-watering price tags may look great in magazines but the design conscious consumer is becoming more price aware. What they want is luxury at a price they can afford. This is what Pelipal is

all about.” Pelipal offers the end user complete flexibility in creating luxurious designs without compromise. Ranges are designed with respect to shape, material and colour. Providing luxury at every

HOUSE & HOME Samsung’s new washing machine tech unveiled SAMSUNG has announced its revolutionary new washing machine technology QuickDrive, which was unveiled last week at IFA 2017 in Berlin. At the heart of the WW8800M washing machine is Samsung’s exclusive QuickDrive technology, which provides consumers the power to dramatically reduce the time it takes to do a load of laundry by half. On its Super Speed setting, a daily load of laundry completes in just 39 minutes, offering consumers the time-saving solution they always wanted but never had, without compromising washing performance, energy efficiency, fabric care and durability. “QuickDrive is the industry’s game changer, dramatically cutting the amount of time it takes for users to do laundry and giving them more time to enjoy life,” said B.S. Suh, Executive Vice President of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Elec-

tronics. “The new WW8800M washing machine uses QuickDrive technology to provide fast and powerful washing performance, with a range of technologies and smart functionality that make doing laundry so much easier.” QuickDrive not only cuts washing time by 50 per cent but also energy use by 20 per cent without compromising the cleaning performance, Samsung say. The tech giant says that’s because its unique drum consists of a large main drum and a plate in the back that rotates independently.

▪▪ The WW8800M will be available from October. Unlike conventional washers that move clothes repeatedly up and down over the course of the cycle, the WW8800M moves clothes from top to bottom in the drum, and the plate in the back introduces a back and forth movement. It creates a revolutionary dynamic action that quickly, gently and thoroughly removes dirt to deliver an intense and complete wash cycle. Samsung's QuickDrive

technology was independently tested by Intertek, the world's largest testing and inspection organization. Intertek confirmed that QuickDrive technology provides the same level of cleaning performance and fabric care as existing products, while reducing washing times. The new WW8800M also

has many of Samsung’s outstanding laundry technologies, like EcoBubble, which provides powerful washing performance by mixing air and water to generate fine detergent bubbles that penetrate fabrics faster and maximize the detergent’s effects even at low temperatures. Throughout the washing cycle, QuickDrive offers a

range of smart and convenient features. The IoTready machine boasts an AI-powered laundry assistant, which provides three key smart features that help manage laundry more conveniently. It enables consumers to manage a laundry finishing time, freeing them to control their schedule on their own terms. It also automatically gives recommendations for optimal wash cycles based on the information such as colour, fabric type, and degree of soiling inputted by the user, eliminating the need for guessing about which cycle is best. And it even monitors the washer, proactively alerting users about potential problems and providing quick troubleshooting support. The WW8800M comes with Samsung’s innovative AddWash, a feature that gives users the ability to add items at any time

during the cycle, like a forgotten sock or a delicate item that needs to go in later in the cycle. AddWash even allows users to add detergent or fabric softener at a later time. The combination of these smart features creates a synergistic effect that further enhances the user convenience, simplifying the laundry process. Finally, the WW8800M is designed for long-lasting performance. Equipped with Samsung’s Digital Inverter Technology, the WW8800M reduces noise and helps reduce energy consumption, enabling the washer to maintain its outstanding washing performance and fabric care. It also uses an Anti-Scale Heater, a new type of anti-adhesion coating, which ensures up to 55 per cent less scale build-up than conventional ceramic heaters, helping the heater maintain its performance

SPORT

Dubs aiming for three-in-a-row IN SPORT, the cream nearly always rises to the top. And in this year’s All-Ireland Football Championship, there is no doubt the best two teams on the island have come through the battlefield for this Sunday’s showdown at Croke Park. Dublin, as many predicted, have ended up in another All-Ireland final by taking the direct route, encountering no landmines along the way, although the semi-final clash with Tyrone was expected to be just that. But rather than being a landmine, it proved nothing but a balloon, which the Dubs burst early in the game and didn’t look back. Mayo’s route has been circuitous to say the least. Knocked out of the Connacht championship early by Galway, they were forced into the uncertainty of the qualifiers but showed their mettle to fend off all opposition placed in front of them. It probably wasn’t a sur-

prise that the Mayo v Kerry semi-final went to a replay for the Westerners are now specialists in providing entertainment for anybody lucky enough to have a ticket for one of their matches. But make no mistake, every person associated with Mayo would gladly ditch the entertainment for something more tangible – like the Sam Maguire Cup for instance! By this stage every cow in every field in Mayo knows they haven’t won the All-Ireland since 1951 and have remarkably lost eight finals since the 1980s. If ever there was a county that deserved to catch a break in an All-Ireland decider, it’s Mayo. But sadly you don’t always get what you deserve in sport. George Best never played in a World Cup, Holland, who gave us Johan Cryuff, Ruud Gullit, Denis Bergkamp and their ilk, never won a World Cup Final and Jimmy White never won the World Snooker Champion-

ship. There will no sympathy in the Dublin camp come throw-in on Sunday either, as Jim Gavin’s team chase a third consecutive All-Ireland. The feat was last achieved in the eighties by Kerry when they won Sam in 1984, 1985 and 1986. It will take a gargantuan effort from Mayo to thwart the Dubs’ treble bid while at the same time finally exorcising the ghost of 1951. If Dublin win, it will be there 27th All-Ireland in total and fifth in the last seven seasons. While Mayo have an excellent team and a number of stand-out players, including Lee Keegan and Andy Moran, it’s Dublin’s bench that has been the catalyst for their strong finishes in big games in recent years. In the semi-final against Tyrone, Dublin’s starting 15 didn’t include the likes of Diarmuid Connolly, Bernard Brogan, Kevin McManamon, Paul Flynn and Michael Darragh McAuley, players who would be automatic first choices

▪▪ Dublin will face off against Mayo again at Croke Park this Sunday. FILE PHOTO for every other county. This could be a real problem for Mayo boss Stephen Rochford and his selectors to contend with, especially if there is little between

the teams coming down the home straight. Last year, it took a replay to separate the sides in the decider; in 2015 there was another replay at the semi-final stage; and

in 2013, Mayo’s hearts were broken once again when the Dubs won the final by a point after another gigantic tussle. So can Stephen Rochford’s Mayo team finally reach the

Holy Grail or will Jim Gavin’s supremely talented Dublin side prevail once again? Hold on tight for what will hopefully be another epic at Croker.

Nissan reveals its new EV NISSAN revealed its new LEAF last week - the world’s most advanced mass-market electric vehicle (EV).

All electric, and packed with ingenious technology, the new Nissan LEAF is the company’s first car in Europe that will embrace the early steps of advanced driver assistance. It is packed with cutting-edge innovations such as e-Pedal, allowing you to drive and brake in a totally new and seamless way. It can also go further, with a range of 378km on a single charge, and has been redesigned for a new generation, with a sleeker look inside and out. The new Nissan LEAF will be on sale in Europe from January 2018. “The new Nissan LEAF drives Nissan Intelligent Mobility, which is the core brand strategy for Nissan’s future,” said Hereto Soakaway, presi-

dent and chief executive officer of Nissan. “The new Nissan LEAF, with its improved autonomy range, combined with the evolution of autonomous drive technology, strengthens Nissan’s EV leadership, as well as the expansion of EVs globally. “It also has the core strengths that will be embodied by future Nissan models.” Nissan Intelligent Mobility is the company’s blueprint to redefine the future of driving and looks set to progress the role of the car to be more than simply a mode of transport. Nissan Intelligent Mobility is defined by how the car is driven, how it is powered and how it integrates into society. The new Nissan LEAF is the company’s on-road embodiment of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, with its early-stage of Repilot technologies, advanced all-elec-

The focal point of Nissan Intelligent Power in the new Nissan LEAF is its e-powertrain, which offers improved energy efficiency and increased torque and power output for an enhanced dynamic performance.

Complementing this new drivetrain is the high-tech lithium-ion battery pack, which delivers increased power and energy storage capacity. Along with enhanced energy efficiency, the new e-powertrain delivers an exhilarating, linear driving performance with a power output of 110 kW.

Torque has been increased to 320 Nm, resulting in improved acceleration. The new Nissan LEAF’s driving range has been increased to 378km on a single charge. For those who want to drive their new LEAF further, Nissan will introduce a high-power version with increased motor power and

battery capacity at the end of 2018. This version will provide an even longer range, giving customers a range choice depending on their driving needs. The new Nissan LEAF features three main new intelligent driving technologies. The first is Repilot advanced driver assistance sys-

tem. Used during single lane driving on the highway, it makes the drive easier, less stressful and more relaxing. The second, Repilot Park, will change the way people think about parking. And the third, the e-Pedal, is a revolutionary technology that is set to transform the way we drive in the future.
