Council to undertake review of marathon

F

INGAL County Council last week apologised for the disruption and inconvenience caused to both participants and residents by the Dublin Half Marathon in Donabate.

The beginning of the race had to be delayed due to major traffic delays and a large number of runners failed to make it to the venue. It was the first year that the Dublin Half Marathon had been moved from the Phoenix Park to Newbridge Demesne.

Following the incident Fianna Fáil’s Seanad Spokesperson for Youth Affairs, Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee called on Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, to examine the provision of life-saving

There is no doubt that this AED saved the boy's life. “Defibrillators or AED equipment are currently not provided in schools.

Fresh appeal in local murder inquiry CRIMESTOPPERS and An Garda Síochána have renewed the appeal for information in relation to the murder of Michal Kurek whose body was found at Ballyboughal, north county Dublin, in August. Mr Kurek died from multiple stab wounds. The 33-year-old man, originally from Dziewin in Poland, had lived mainly in Ireland since 2010. He was recently homeless and frequented the Ongar area of Dublin 15. Speaking about the case, Detective Inspector Eddie Carroll, from Balbriggan Garda Station, said: “In August Michal was murdered and we are appealing for anyone with information or anyone who saw Michael between Thursday 3rd or Friday 4th August, 2017 to come forward. “Based on Michal’s last known movements, we are particularly keen to hear from people residing in the areas of Ongar, Clonsilla, Coolmine, Hartstown and Huntstown. >> Alcohol bill using a sledgehammer to crack a nut OPINION

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

I

T’S fair to say that Ireland had a bit of a reputation for the demon drink long before you could pick up a bottle of wine at your local petrol station or enjoy a glass of bubbly while you treated yourself to a wash and blow dry at the salon. That’s why I’ve mixed feelings about some of the measures contained in the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, which is currently winging its way through the legislative process and, all going to plan, could become law by the end of 2017. I’ve no doubt that the bill is well-intentioned on the part of the Government, even if it appears to be a case of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. There is something of the nanny

state at play when we hear talk of clamping down on barbers offering beer to their customers or our favourite Christmas ads falling prey to tough new regulations. The relationship between the drinks industry and sporting organisations is a trickier one. On one hand, it can be argued the prominent branding of alcohol at major sporting events is setting a bad example for young people in attendance. The counter argument is that sponsorship from drinks companies helps financially sustain local clubs and, in doing so, provides amenities and diversionary activities for our youth. Young people who are passionate about sport recognise the importance of a healthy lifestyle and are educated by their coaches about the negative impact of alcohol on their performance. In terms of a healthy lifestyle, our new Taoiseach is a positive role model for clean living and is more likely to be photographed doing a triathlon than posing with a pint in his hand (certain former Taoisigh come to mind!). Based on his media profile, I’ve no idea whether or not Leo likes the occasional pint – and fair play to him if he does – but he seems to drink a lot of bottled water. While it might seem tokenistic, the Government should lead by example and start by removing the availability

▪▪ The Government is seeking to de-normalise the purchase of alcohol. PHOTO: BIGSTOCK of alcohol in our national parliament. Do our hardworking TDs, ministers and senators need the distraction of two bars in the Dáil, taking their focus off the job of actually running the country? Forget about unpaid bar tabs, late night drinking and even the ‘Lapgate’ scandal (Google it!). It just seems wholly inappropriate that our legislators can consume alcohol in their workplace

while at the same time seeking to blame supermarket owners and hairdressers for the ills of the nation. Alcohol abuse has caused devastation for generations of Irish families and it is only right and proper that the State looks at solutions to contain what is a significant public health and societal problem. But in targeting the lowhanging fruit, the Government runs the

risk of overshadowing the many positive measures contained in the bill. With so many headlines focusing on hair salons and TV commercials, the real danger is that the message will be lost on the public. The Public Health (Alcohol) Bill may well prove to be the most important piece of legislation since the smoking ban - it just needs to be fine-tuned.

Local councillor Nial Ring (Ind) described the proposal as a “most welcome” development. “Chief Superintendent Sean Ward is to be commended for his work on this proposal,” said Cllr Ring. “This initiative is both practical and much needed. The fact that the assessment is complete, the costings done and most importantly, the funding secured, is a testament to the commitment of Chief Superintendent Ward and his team to improving the quality of life in the north inner City by tack-

ling the drug dealing problem which is so visible on the streets on a daily basis. “The locations chosen are those which the public, politicians and the gardai are familiar with as locations where drugs and prescription drugs in particular are openly traded.” Cllr Ring said the installation of these CCTV cameras is sure to get the message across to dealers that they are being watched and will be prosecuted. “I am sure the imminent installation of these cameras will have a positive impact and help get the message across that this type of activity is not acceptable in this community,” he added. Council undertakes marathon review Continued from page 1 Mark Henry, the Green Party representative for Swords and Donabate, has called for a thorough review of the staging of the Dublin Half Marathon in Newbridge Demesne following the traffic chaos. “If it proves physically impossible to get 10,000 runners to the venue in cars and public transport then the race should revert to the Phoenix Park,” he said. Mr Henry, who was a participant in the race, said he had to abandon his car and walk to reach the start in time. “What is usually a 10-minute car journey from Swords took me an hour an 10 minutes and I still didn’t make it to Newbridge,” he told Northside People. “I had to abandon the car near Turvey service station and walk for 20 minutes to reach the race in time for the delayed start. “After the race I could see that runners had parked their cars as far away as the Seatown roundabout, which was a punishing six kilome-

If it proves physically impossible to get 10,000 runners to the venue in cars and public transport, then the race should revert to the Phoenix Park tre walk from the finish for people who had just run 21 kilometres.” Mr Henry, who completed the race in two hours and seven minutes, said he felt sorry for the runners who couldn’t get to the race on time and had their preparations for the Dublin Marathon interrupted. In a statement, the council said there were many months of planning by the Dublin Race Series, who organised the event. “This included a series of meetings and consultations with statutory stakeholders,” the council spokesperson said. “A full Event Management Safety Plan and Traffic Management Plan was prepared by competent professionals and submitted to Fingal County Council. “A Communications

Plan was also in place under which 11,000 leaflets were distributed locally in the week leading up to the event. “Information was also disseminated on social media and there was also engagement with local community groups.” The council said the main issue which caused delays was the failure to properly manage the junction at Lissenhall (M1/R132). “This was despite a review after similar issues at the 2017 Flavours of Fingal event in June,” the spokesperson said. “Following Flavours of Fingal, Fingal County Council approached the Dublin Race Series and advised that there was a need for a robust Traffic Management Plan to deal with any potential issues which could arise.

Eye Catching Blinds

“A professional traffic management company was engaged by Dublin Race Series and a Traffic Management Plan submitted and accepted by Fingal County Council. “There were also several hundred volunteer stewards and 59 members of An Gárda Siochána in attendance at the event. “This is a very complex junction to manage and it is accepted that this Traffic Management Plan proved insufficient to deal with the high volume of traffic utilising the junction over a short period of time on Saturday morning.” The spokesperson said Dublin Race Series have an “excellent reputation” in the delivery of similar events over many years. “Fingal County Council also delivers, funds and facilitates many successful and safe events on an annual basis,” the spokesperson added. “Unfortunately, on this occasion, this event fell below the standards we hold ourselves to and for this we again apologise.”

Volunteer Fair to be held in Dublin THE Irish Aid Volunteer Fair, the largest event of its kind in Ireland, takes place in Dublin Castle on Saturday, October 7.

MID-SEASON AUTUMN STOCK

For anyone who is interested in or has ever thought about volunteering overseas it is a unique occasion, with over 35 volunteer-sending agencies attending. Supporting people in Ireland to volunteer overseas, both before they have travelled and when they return home is something that Comhlámh has done for the last 40 years. Comhlámh’s director, Mark Cumming said: “In-

ternational volunteering has a potential to make significant impact both in host communities and here in Ireland when it’s done thoughtfully and with purpose. “The Irish Aid Volunteer Fair brings together the best of volunteer sending agencies in Ireland with a focus on effective ethical volunteering overseas and brings them under one roof. “And the people who attend reflect all ages and walks of life, be they new students, medical professionals, accountants or retired teachers, all with an interest in playing a role in

effecting change.” James Fahey, who attended last year’s fair, said it was a fantastic way to learn about the volunteer opportunities that are available to Irish people. “The friendly and informative event gave me a real insight into life overseas as a volunteer,” he said. “I went to Nairobi in Kenya as a volunteer with VMM which has been an eye opening experience so far.” The Irish Aid Fair takes place on October 7 in the Hibernian Conference Centre in Dublin Castle. It runs from 11am-5pm, is free and open to all.

The ‘World’s Largest Lesson’ introduces the Sustainable Development Goals to children and young people everywhere and unites them in action. The World’s Largest Lesson was taught in schools all over the world (193 UN countries), including Santa Sabina Dominican College, Sutton, during a week in

September. The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are the UN’s plan for the future.  Education about the goals is an important part of that plan if the next generation of world citizens is to see the plan fulfilled by its due date of 2030. The aim of this initiative is to make the world a fairer place and both Ireland and Kenya led these historic negotiations.  A total of 193 signatory countries endorsed the plan in September 2015 and countries must report on

their progress regularly. This year’s launch theme is Food, and during the event, Minister Bruton, aided by Santa Sabina Dominican College’s Social Justice Prefects, and the class (of Santa Sabina Equality Club members), learned about sustainable production methods, food air miles, water and carbon footprints and Fair-trade practices. It is hoped that by 2030, the Global Goals will have helped to end extreme porvety, fight inequality and injustice and tackle climate change.

to include all of the Swords community, on an inter-generational and inter-cultural basis, in the work they do to enhance the town. Martin Kelleher, managing director of SuperValu, said: “The SuperValu Diversity Award demonstrates the competition’s clear capacity to grow, attracting all age groups and embracing all cul-

tures with our communities. “The tireless dedication of volunteers young and old is truly inspiring. This is a great achievement for Swords TidyTowns and we would like to extend our congratulations to the committee on a well-deserved win.” Senator James Reilly (FG) congratulated all the towns and communities in Fingal

who took part in this year’s competition. “For the last 59 years the Tidy Towns competition has brought enormous improvements to our local towns, villages and rural areas in Fingal,” said Senator Reilly. “I was particularly pleased to see our own towns and villages doing very well. Last year’s national winners, won-

derful Skerries, nearly pulled it off again scoring 330 and the 2017 winners (Birdhill) scored 332. Interest in the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition continues to grow every year and this year saw 870 towns and villages entering. A striking change to the skyline after crane is unveiled DUBLIN Port Company has made a striking change to the city’s skyline with the resurrection of one of its iconic 1960s cranes. The 115-feet tall Crane 292 has been lovingly restored to its former glory, with an illuminated cabin for powerful nighttime impact, and now stands proudly adjacent to Port Centre once again. Crane 292 is steeped in

Port history having served as a ‘workhorse’ loading and unloading bulky material from ships at Alexandra Quay from 1964 through to its retirement in 1997. It was constructed by the famed Stothert and Pitt company of Bath, whose origins dated back to the great Victorian era of engineering. Crane 292 derived its name from its position as the second crane at berth 29 in an era when cranes

were synonymous with the city and Port skyline – with up to 60 cranes at that time extending right down to Custom House quay, much closer to the city centre. Eamonn O’Reilly, chief executive, Dublin Port Company, said: “The crane’s installation is part of the softening of the Port’s boundaries with the city and our drive to provide public amenity and realm at Port Centre for the first time in 35 years.”

Social Democrats launch Fingal branch THE Social Democrats officially launched its Fingal branch in Swords recently. Cllr Paul Mulville chaired a public meeting at the Carnegie Court Hotel, North Street. Cllr Mulville introduced Marina Reilly, the party’s new local area representative for Swords. Ms Reilly said when the Social Democrats was founded it sparked her interest in politics for the first time and marked the beginning of her political activism. Speaking at the event, Catherine Murphy TD said the party’s strength is its grassroots. Deputy Murphy and Deputy Róisín Shorthall said their responsibility is to “establish for the first time in Ireland a true social democratic party and then hand over the reigns to the next generation of political activists”. Jan Bosch, from the Fingal branch, introduced the ‘Swords20’ initiative which seeks to drastically reduce commuting time to and from Dublin city centre by means of a technology that will enable buses to use the Luas tracks along Manor Street in Dublin.

How Dublin would look if hit by war or natural disaster HAVE you ever wondered how Dublin would look and cope if it was hit by a major natural disaster, had to endure open warfare or deal with a refugee crisis? All too often, it is easy for us to become detached from the reality of situations in other parts of the world. Many countries that have been devastated by war or natural disasters now bear little resemblance to what they were like in the past. Using digital animation, Oxfam Ireland has created lifelike representations of what some of Dublin’s most familiar city scenes and prominent landmarks would look like if they were hit by a devastating typhoon or the ravages of war. The video, which is available to view on YouTube (https://youtu.be/8fRXWmZ-luc), is a shocking re-

NAC Masters Men’s team make splash with ninth title in a row THE NAC Masters Men’s team is celebrating its ninth consecutive Leinster Open Sea title. Every summer the Leinster Open Sea Committee, part of Swim Ireland, organises a season of 'open sea' swimming races in a variety of locations along the Leinster coast. The races cater for all ages and abilities, from teenagers to senior citizens and from novice swimmers to former internationals. The races take place at

a variety of outdoor swimming locations along the east coast, including some of Dublin’s best known bathing spots like the Bull Wall, Seapoint, Killiney Beach and Portmarnock. The races are on average 1,500m in length. This year over 33 races took place. The Liffey Swim and Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race are the two ‘majors’ and most highly prized events in this calendar. The NAC Men’s team claimed their ninth consecutive success having won

their first title in 2009. NAC Masters is one of Ireland’s largest and most successful Masters’ swimming clubs. Founded in 1988, the club has grown steadily in both membership numbers and reputation. ‘Masters’ is the term given to competitive swimming for anyone over 25. Jackie O’Connor, chairperson of NAC Masters, said the competition was very tough this year, with 21 men’s swimming teams from across Leinster competing for the prestigious title.

▪▪ Members of NAC Masters Swimming Club during a team photo in May. The club’s men’s team is celebrating its latest ‘open sea’ title triumph. “So, this is a super achievement for our men’s team and we’re very proud of them,” said Jackie. “I’d especially like to thank our coach Declan Harte who has put in a huge effort over the last number of years coaching and motivating both the men’s and

ladies’ teams. “I’d encourage anyone with an interest in training and competing to come down to one of our sessions in the National Aquatic Centre (NAC) or Westwood, Clontarf. Our training times are available on www.nacmasters.com.”

K-Star Academy was set up in 2016 by multi-talented Karen Tynan, who followed her own dream to London and graduated from the prestigious London Studio Centre with a BA honours degree in Theatre/ Dance. From there, she began a career that included performing at headline tours in America, releasing two albums and being featured in hit US TV series Penny Dreadful as well as various TV adverts. Karen now brings her wealth of experience to K-Star Academy, which was shortlisted for the ICE Awards for the Best Newcomer Award to business last May just over a year after it was established. K-Star is a performing arts school (singing, dancing and drama) for young talent from four years up to early teens. Groups to get funding for equipment MORE than 1,700 community youth groups, including some from the Northside, are set to benefit from a €6.35 million equipment fund launched last week by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone. Minister Zappone confirmed that the money is being made available to allow clubs buy valuable equipment which will support their work with young people. It is the first time her department has launched such a fund. Earlier this year, Minister Zappone approved the launch of an updated and improved Local Youth Club Grant Scheme. The scheme, which has been running for a number of years, was re-launched in 2017. It supports youth work activities at a local level. “This equipment fund is being launched in recognition of the significant development work undertaken by these local youth groups in 2017,” said Minister Zappone. “In line with my Department’s National Strategy on Children and Young People’s Participation and Decision Making, I have asked that as part of the application process, each group should consult with its young members to ascertain their opinions on what equipment might be needed and how it will directly benefit them.”

No time for waste.

By 2020 no good food will go to waste from Tesco Ireland stores.

Throwing away perfectly good food is something none of us like to do, especially when so many in our communities go without. That’s why in 2013, Tesco became a founding partner of FoodCloud and why each night, in our stores across Ireland, we donate our surplus food to those who really need it – a total of 4 million meals to date.

Help us recruit more causes for surplus food donations by visiting Tesco.ie/NoTimeForWaste

Wild Beasts to play Dublin as part of their farewell tour WILD Beasts have announced a series of gigs that will prove to be their last after their recently announced split. The band is also unveiling a new EP as well as playing three farewell shows after revealing their plans recently to call it a day. The ‘Punk Drunk & Trembling’ EP arrives on October 20 via Domino. All three songs on the EP were recorded during sessions for last year’s ‘Boy King’. Meanwhile, the efinal Wild Beasts shows will take place from February 15-17 at Dublin’s Olympia, Manchester’s Albert Hall, and the London Eventim Apollo, respectively. “The four of us have decided, for our own reasons and in our own ways, that it is now time to leave this orbit,” the band wrote in a statement. “We’re caretakers to something precious and

don’t want to have it diminish as we move forward in our lives. “Wild Beasts are coming to an end,” they added. “Our hearts and minds have been devoted to the band since we were teenagers. “We've created something quite of our own and built a body of work which we stand by as heartfelt and true. “Thank you for your love and energy and for helping us make it what it is. “We consider ourselves remarkably fortunate to have lived out this dream. But before we go, we'd like to celebrate with you.” As part of the celebrations, the band will play their final ever live dates early next year. You will be able to come along and wish them luck when they take the stage on February 15 in Dublin’s Olympia. Tickets are available for pre-sale via the band’s web-

site and on general sale. Despite the break-up, the record producers Domino said they were nonetheless proud to announce the release of the ‘Punk Drunk & Trembling’ EP.  An uncovered gem from the band’s Boy King recording sessions, its eponymous lead track is available digitally. The EP also features the tracks ‘Maze’ and ‘Last Night All My Dreams’, which were previously only available on the deluxe vinyl version of ‘Boy King’.  In the band’s statement released recently they explained: “The track listing for the ‘Punk Drunk & Trembling’ EP includes the tracks ‘Punk Drunk And Trembling’, ‘Maze’ and ‘Last Night All My Dreams’. The ‘Punk Drunk And Trembling’ EP will be available digitally on October 30 ▪▪ Wild Beasts are coming and on limited 10” via Dom to Dublin Mart on November 17.”

Bowie regulars to pay tribute LEGENDARY Bowie touring and recording keyboardist Mike Garson, who collaborated with the artist for longer than any other player, is heading up a new tribute band. Along with previous Bowie band leaders, guitarist/vocalist Adrian Belew (Sound & Vision Tour) and guitarist Gerry Leonard (A Reality Tour) they have over 30 years’ experience of recording, writing and playing live with Bowie. Joining Mike, Adrian and Gerry will be Bowie’s Let’s Dance/Serious Moonlight Tour bassist Carmine Rojas. More than just a mere salute, ‘Celebrating David Bowie’ keeps David’s music alive with musicians who worked closely with him throughout his career and other top musicians who were greatly influenced by him. Angelo Moore and 2017 Grammy-nominee Gaby Moreno, as well as special guests and other former Bowie band members, will make surprise appearances

when they play here, in the Olympia Theatre on January 15 CdB creator and producer Angelo Bundini (aka guitarist Scrote) is also back and excited about the concept for the new show.

“After the last tour, I didn’t really imagine playing more shows because it was insanely difficult to pull off,” Angelo said. “David’s last tour was in 2004, so I began to wonder what he might do if he were

to tour again today. That’s what we’re presenting in 2018.” The large rotating ensemble will perform a show highlighting elements that influenced Bowie and that, in turn, Bowie influenced.

Sam Maguire Cup has company in trophy cabinet after ladies’ triumph THE Sam Maguire Cup won’t have the spotlight all to itself this winter after the Dublin ladies made it a memorable double over Mayo with a 4-11 to 0-11 triumph at Croke Park. Sitting alongside Sam in the trophy cabinet will be the Brendan Martin Cup, won by the Dublin senior ladies after a flurry of late goals decided a thrilling contest watched by a record crowd of 46,286. Dublin ended their losing streak in All-Ireland ladies’ finals with a dominant display against the Westerners.  After finishing runners-up in 2014, 2015 and 2016, each time losing out to Cork, Dublin finally landed the big one to ease all that heartache. It was Dublin’s first senior women’s All-Ireland title since 2010. Also, it’s the first time since 1986 that the Men’s All-Ireland senior football title and the Women’s All-Ireland senior football title were won by the same county. Kerry did the double that year. Last Monday week the Dublin ladies’ team enjoyed a fantastic reception from supporters in Malahide where they paraded the trophy. A

s a local newspaper serving the Northside of Dublin for

It may sound like a well-worn cliché but it’s true: there is something about the Northside that sets it apart from any other part of the country. The Northside has produced many famous names from the worlds of television and radio, not to mention its fair share of Hollywood stars and even an Oscar winner! Northsiders have also fea-

tured strongly in literary works: for instance, would Roddy Doyle have been able to write about any other part of the city with the same degree of warmth, humanity and humour? It’s doubtful. Since 1987, Northside People has been happy to give a voice to the unsung heroes of our local communities – our business people, our entrepreneurs, our activists, our volunteers; many of them just ordinary people doing extraordinary things. It’s the same with sport. Some of today’s successful sports stars, national and international, all started out in

HEALTH Good news for apprehensive dental patients MANY people would like to have implants but are apprehensive about the surgical procedure involved. This is a shame because it is definitely the ultimate procedure available for not only replacing missing teeth but for also retaining the jawbone and therefore, the shape of one’s face. They are, of course, through the various clip-on systems, invaluable for securely retaining dentures and make loose lower dentures a thing of the past. The good news for those apprehensive patients who may be a little squeamish about the surgery involved is that a new modality for the Memory Invasive Implantation Insertion (MIMI) is available with the Champion Implant System from Germany (www.mimi-info.com). Using this technique, the scalpel stays in the drawer and no sutures are required. Obviously the implant is still inserted into the bone but unlike teeth there are very few nerves in it, and therefore, the procedure will be totally comfortable and easy. For further expert information, contact dental surgeon Liam O Droma, who is based on Harbour Road, Howth. Phone 01-8395254, email lodroma@orthocosmetics.ie or visit www.orthocosmetics.ie

Osteopthy and Flat Head Syndrome.

Plagiocephaly and Brachycephlay are descriptions of babys heads which are distorted or misshapen.

Brachycephlay

These conditions can be caused by pressure on the skull within the womb from overcrowding, or not Plagiocephaly enough fluid, or if baby is in an awkward position. Injury can occur to babys head, base of the skull or neck if there is difficulty in the birthing process and may not show up until baby is lying for long periods of time. Then the flattening will occur on the side baby favours. If the injury is not severe then the normal growth process will normalise the head. When the injury is severe however, a shock or holding causes the soft tissues which line the bones of the inside of the head to tighten. These tissues will not grow at the same rate as healthy tissues and an injury pattern occurs. As a babies skull is soft and malleable and harden as they grow, it is wise to get treatment as soon as possible. Treatments can be over a number of growth spurts depending on the severity of the injury. Osteopathic treatment regarding babies are very gentle, non invasive and relaxing, and involves hands on techniques which enable the shock to release and the natural moulding process to take place.

New programme to help men with prostate cancer nence issues, stress management and relationships. Counselling Psychologist Kevin Leech, who is facilitating the programme, believes it provides a safe space for men to meet each other and gain mutual support. “The programme is an opportunity for men to come together informally, to share their experiences in confidence, and to explore ways of better living with prostate cancer,” said Mr Leech. “For example, we discuss how changes to diet and regular exercise can improve energy and mood, as well as boost the immune system. “We look at treatment options and ways to support participants in living a fuller sexual life. We look at

how stress affects the mind and body, and offer practical ideas to help men actively manage this. We give advice and go through exercises that men can undertake to address continence issues which can be a side-effect of treatment. “Finally, we explore the impact of a diagnosis on relationships, whether they be with family, friends, work colleagues or others in our social circle, and how we can best live with these changes and challenges.” To find out more or to register for the programme, which is supported by the Irish Cancer Society, contact Jane or Tricia on 01-8307333 or email info@arccancersupport.ie.

PETS DOGS TRUST CANINE COLUMN

Halloween preparation for your dog WITH Halloween fast approaching, now is the time to start getting your dog prepared to deal with fireworks. With this in mind, we have added ‘Sounds Scary’ to our website at www. dogstrust.ie, which helps your dog to become slowly accustomed to the sounds of fireworks over a period of weeks. Sounds Scary is not only backed by years of clinical experience, it is also scientifically proven to be safe, effective and easy to use. Over the Halloween period, if your dog has only recently developed sensitivity to fireworks or noises, try to act as if there is nothing to be scared of - jolly him along and praise him for responding positively. However, if your dog has a serious or long-standing phobia, give him attention if he requires it - he’ll be too scared for this to act as a reward, so it won’t encourage the unwanted behaviour and instead he will benefit from the comfort this gives him. Essentially though, try to find out what helps him to cope and be sure to

▪▪ Remember to keep your pets safe at Halloween. let him do this, – for example, letting him hide under the table – don’t try to coax him out, if this is where he feels safest, he’ll come out when he’s ready and then you can praise him. Should you fear your dog will still be

upset by fireworks, despite following the Sounds Scary programme, perhaps consider some of the following: 1. ThunderShirts – a calming vest that applies gentle, constant pressure that may help your dog feel safe and

secure (available in some pet shops and online). 2. Adaptil spray, collar or plug in diffuser – releases dog-appeasing pheromones that help calm your dog (available from most veterinary practices). 3. Pet Remedy – a blend of essential oils that can help calm the nerves of anxious or stressed pets (available online). 4. Toys - Keep your dog busy with interactive toys such as those that can be stuffed with tasty treats, like K9 Connectables or even make your own by making plaits from old towels and adding treats as you plait. 5. Sleep over - Consider asking a friend or relative who lives in a rural area that will have little or no fireworks on Halloween night if your dog can sleep over. At very noisy times around Halloween, provide your dog with a safe hiding place (a suitably sized cardboard box would do) in his favourite room of the house and close the curtains. If it is not possible to black out your windows, consider taping black bin liners to them.

Also turn up the volume of your television or radio to drown out the firework noises. Remember not to shut any internal doors, as your dog may feel trapped and panic. Please don’t leave your dog alone in the house, as he may panic and injure himself. A stodgy high-carbohydrate meal (e.g. with well-cooked rice or pasta) in the late afternoon may help make your dog feel more sleepy and calm during the evening. Also make sure he goes out for a walk and to toilet before it gets dark and the fireworks start. Please consult your vet if you think your pet will really struggle this Halloween with fireworks, as there are now several anxiety reducing drugs available for dogs.

Only put out as much food out as will be consumed in one or two days.

The Dublin People Newspaper Group has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for lost and abandoned dogs. Our Dog of the Week is Ivor, a four-year-old, male German Shepherd crossbreed. He is ready to start his life over again and cannot wait to find his loving, forever family. Ivor is a real gentleman who likes to look his best so he really enjoys being brushed and groomed. He is an energetic boy who loves to keep busy so he will need plenty of exercise and brain work to keep him happy and in good form. Ivor is quite a nosy dog so he wants to be included in every activity taking place. He is also a very affectionate lad, who enjoys cuddles and affection; he is basically an oversized lap dog! Ivor likes the company of other playful, similar size dogs, therefore he should be fine living with another canine companion once he is introduced to the dog successfully. Ivor is a bouncy and easily excitable boy, therefore he is suited to living with adults. If you think you can offer him a loving home contact Dogs Trust on 01-8791000.

Feeding Tips: Always maintain a continuous supply of fresh food, as birds will come to depend on the food you put out.

Fresh clean water should always be available. Water is critical to birds’ survival and adding water to your bird feeding area will quickly attract birds.

Consider different foods and feeding methods - not all foods will attract the same birds. Some birds can hang from feeders while others may

Don’t worry if you don’t have trees available for hanging the feeders – a metal hook planted into the ground or hung off the side of a structure works just as well.

This ghastly collection of madmen and monsters from beyond the veil join together to revel in firelight and create the ultimate afterlife of fright. And this is just the beginning of the horror. The airline also says it will increase capacity on its Vancouver service by 65 per cent next year with the addition of two extra flights, offering a five times weekly service for summer 2018. Alan Shatter reveals his early life stories ALAN Shatter will be signing copies of his new book in Openminds Book Store in Ballinteer on October 7 at 11am. In ‘Life is a Funny Business’, Shatter revisits his early life experiences and explores how he was shaped and influenced by them. For the first time he describes the tragedy and comedy in his family history and background, depicted through the lens of an Irish Jewish boy growing up in 1950's and 1960's Dublin and his insights as a member of Ireland's small Jewish community. His story travels through the Ireland of the 1970s and his early years of social and political activism and as a lawyer. It ends shortly after Christmas 1981, just over six months following his first election to Dáil Éireann at the age of 30. It also touches on some more recent events of political and historical significance linked to his past.

His surprising and perceptive narrative uniquely depicts an Ireland of decades partially forgotten, profound changes that have taken place, incidents and events he has not previously publicly discussed and how he coped with childhood adversity. Alan's deeply moving and thoughtful story reveals the real person behind the public figure and what shaped his values, beliefs, character and self deprecating sense of humour. It is a story of love, laughter, tears and resilience. Alan Shatter was born in Dublin on February 14, 1951. He is a law graduate of Trinity College Dublin and has a Diploma in European Integration from the Europa Institute of the University of Amsterdam. He was a partner in the solicitors firm Gallagher Shatter for almost 35 years and waas a member of Dáil

Éireann during the periods 1981–2002 and 2007–2016. He is a former chairperson of FLAC ( the Free Legal Advice Centres), a former chairperson of CARE, an organisation that campaigned for child care and children’s legislation reform in the 1970s and a former President of the Irish Council Against Blood Sports. In 1998 he was the author of a major report that criticised tobacco companies and recommended various

controls on smoking and advertising. In the years that followed most of the recommendations made were implemented by government. He is a former chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and of the Government Task Force on Emergency Planning. He was a member of Government as both Minister for Justice and Equality and Minister for Defence (2011–2014). During Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union in 2013 he was President of the EU Council of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers and chaired meetings of EU Defence ministers. He is the author of four major academic books on Irish family law. He is also the author of ‘Family Planning Irish Style’ (1979) and ‘Laura’ (1989). He lives in Dublin with his wife Carol and they have two children, Dylan and Kelly.

‘AWESOME’ is the word being used by Mercedes-Benz to describe various initiatives planned for the year ahead that are designed to expand ownership and sustain market growth. These will be set against the backdrop of a highly ambitious model development programme - one that has seen the Stuttgart manufacturer establish a presence in virtually every model segment. And this is set to continue with plans to introduce some 18 new models over the next eight years as Mercedes-Benz pursues its goal to secure number one position in the luxury car market globally. Evidence that this goal is being achieved can be seen in performance at a local level where sales in Ireland show Mercedes-Benz achieving a 36 per cent average annual growth over the past four years. Even in the current year, sales are running 32 per cent above the same period last year, despite an overall 10 per cent market decline.  Looking to 2018, use of the term ‘awesome’ will be a central theme as Mercedes-Benz here, and elsewhere, place focus on their goal of offering motorists

even more enhanced specifications levels matched to prices. There will be a particular emphasis on what their sales manager in Ireland, Ciaran Allen, calls their “main performing models”. “Our overarching commitment to maintain a competitive specifications/price position across our range, now and into 2018, is one that will be reflected in awesome cars with awesome specifications at awesome prices,” Mr Allen said. With their important C-Class and E-Class ranges, the drive will be to achieve first place in their respective market segments, building on the 22 per cent sales increase being achieved by C-Class and the 70 per cent increase in sales of E-Class this year. Noteworthy in this regard will be an increased emphasis on MG refinements and a focus on their improved specifications generally. Other models likely to benefit from this new specifications/ price equation are CLA and GLC and topof-the range models like the new remodelled S-Class, first versions of which have arrived here at a lower-than-expected price marginally above €90,000 for the S 350 version.

Also driving this new growth-led approach will be an expanding network of exclusive Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Coming on stream over the coming months will be two new Dublin City outlets – a remodelled MSL Ballsbridge and a completely new MSL Grange dealership at Pottery Road, Deansgrange. Added to them are those dealerships currently undergoing a corporate identity makeover, what Ciaran Allen calls “a welcoming ambiance for buyers of new and pre-owned vehicles”. Away from the coalface of model sales and marketing, the year ahead will see Mercedes-Benz place greater focus on other fronts. One of these will be to introduce customers to the many attractions and advantages that its ‘Connect Me’ system offers, including a ‘track and locator’ function that will be useful should the vehicle ever be taken without authority.  On the used car front, new ‘Mercedes-Benz Certified’ branding will also be introduced, wiht the purpose to standardise current approaches and present a uniform, Europe-wide quality assurance message to used car customers.

Meanwhile, the latest signed bumper section, LED Mercedes-Benz S-Class, first headlamps with ‘light torchversions of which have ar- es’ that adjust to traffic conrived here after enjoying a ditions, as well as numerous mid-term revamp that has interior and under-the-bonseen a number of changes. net features. MOTORING

easytrip will pay your M50 toll charge penalty

10AM4 PM

ASHBOURNE MOBILITY SHOW FRI 13TH & SAT 14TH OCTOBER @ OUR ASHBOURNE SHOWROOMS

UN FAMILY F Y D H EAC A ▪▪ The CEO of easytrip Ireland, Colin Delaney, is offering to pay Irish drivers their M50 penalty notices as part of the easytrip ‘pay the fine’ campaign. Motorists can also sign up to the new ‘pay as you go’ easytrip toll tag to save money and avoid getting a fine in the future. MOTORING services specialist, easytrip, Ireland’s only electronic parking and tolling tag provider, has announced a ‘pay the fine’ campaign for any motorists with an unpaid toll or a penalty notice for non-payment of an M50 toll charge. Targeted at car drivers who are occasional users of the M50, easytrip is offering to pay up to four M50 penalty notices per driver as well as the chance to sign up to a ‘pay as you go’ easytrip toll tag to avoid getting a fine in the future. Car drivers that have received an M50 penalty notice can simply contact easytrip to get the penalty paid, set up an account and start saving on M50 tolls. The easytrip ‘pay the fine’ campaign will be running for a limited four week period from September 25. The M50 toll costs €3.10 per journey for cars that don’t have an electronic toll tag. With an easytrip tag, motorists only pay €2.10. This is a saving of €1 per journey, which can save a commuting motorist over €500 per year. Colin Delaney, CEO of ea-

sytrip Ireland, said: “Motorists who occasionally use the M50 intend to pay the toll charge yet many miss the 8pm deadline the following day. “This is not un-common, as we all have busy lives and important destinations to reach. “Unfortunately, those drivers that do forget receive an M50 penalty notice letter in the post. M50 toll penalties can exceed €40 if not paid within 14 days, and €100 if not paid within 56 days with the threat of legal proceedings to follow if still unpaid. “We want to remove the stress of getting an M50 penalty notice, in particular for those drivers that are infrequent users of the M50,” Mr Delaney said. “That’s why we are offering to pay current M50 penalty notices for motorists. It is also why we are announcing a new easytrip customer account with no monthly fees – an account that will protect those occasionally users of the M50 from receiving a penalty notice in the future and most importantly save them money.” The new ‘pay as you go’ easytrip account has no

monthly administration fees and M50 car toll journeys cost just €2.30, much cheaper than the standard €3.10 toll. Easytrip’s multipurpose tag can be used to access express lanes at all toll plazas nationwide and motorists can also try easytrip’s exclusive stress-free ticketless parking in Ireland’s major car parks across Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford as well as other convenient motoring services. For more information log onto www.easytrip.ie or call 1890 67 67 68. easytrip is Ireland's leading intelligent mobility services specialist. They leverage technology and changing life-styles to connect businesses with consumers to make customers’ lives easier. the décor is visitors will always feel that there’s something slightly cold about the place. Using the right decorating accessories can help put a bit of you in your home, making it more welcoming and warm. Putting the personal touch into your home isn’t expensive. In fact, a lot of what you need is already there in the home, it’s just not in the right place. So, how and where do you start? First go from room to room and list or gather the things you currently own that might work as home decorating accessories. Don’t forget to check out the attic or garage and pull out stored pictures and keepsakes. Objects that you’ve made yourself are ideal for making a small statement about yourself. Your decorating accessories, like art, are a matter of

As an example, let's say that a fireplace is the focal point in your living room. Your personal touch might be to hang a beautifully framed painting or mirror above it. Next place two identical home decorating accessories, like porcelain vases that you've collected, on either side of the mantel. The main point to remember is to display only what is necessary. Avoid the temptation to display too many items that would create a cluttered

look and weaken the drama and impact. You can group objects by theme (animal figurines, collectible plates etc), material (silver, porcelain) or colour. A group is always much more eye-catching and dramatic than simply sprinkling items throughout the room. And the more tightly related the items, the stronger your personal statement will be. Remember to vary your shapes as well. Gather a collection of eight or more family photographs and enlarge them. Then put them in frames of different sizes and arrange them on the same wall in an interesting way. For added effect, have the photographs reproduced in black and white.

A different look for the living room THE living room is the area where you and your family spend the most time but more people tend to neglect the furniture in that room than in any other. All decorating is limited to making sure everyone can see the television from where they sit. No real planning is done and, because of that, this is often the area of the house that feels more like an excuse to store an entertainment system, rather than to actually entertain. How you arrange your living room furniture is a vital part of how functional and

appealing it can be. This is not just about turning all chairs to face the television. You need to put some thought into it. First, you need to understand the purpose of the room. Life happens here; it's not just for you to look at. Your living room furniture design should reflect your family's schedule and habits. You must be practical about it. Know who prefers to sit where, how traffic flows, what activities will be done in the room, etc. Your family will spend its time here and you want them to be comfortable

and able to actually use the room. When you know what the space will be used for, you can then begin to arrange your living room furniture. It’s easiest to begin with a focal point. This does not, despite what most believe, have to be the TV. Is this usually done? Yes, but it's not a requirement. Instead, you may choose to highlight other features of the room...like a fireplace. It should be noted, though, that your family will still mostly be interested in the entertainment value. Try to angle living room furni-

This will give a visual flow to the room and keep eyes moving as you want them to. Arrange your living room furniture to have a purpose; don’t just scatter it against the walls. The space needs to direct attention to whatever you deem to be the focal point. And, of course, the focal point will add more than looks. It will also allow you to plan how the rest of the room should be done. This will let you consider things like how to divide the floor and keep traffic from crossing in front of odd places, where to position a seating area, etc. By having one piece to focus on, you will know better how to work the rest of the

Pensioners prevail at ESB meeting Charlie Mac Dermott ANOTHER milestone in ESB’s history was reached in Croke Park on September 12. For the first time in 75 years of the Pension Scheme, the Trustees met with the general membership. ESB Retired Staff Association (RSA) has for many years been pursuing improved conditions for pensioners, such as the cessation/abolishment of the Government pension levy (only applied to our pensioners); the securing of voting rights on all matters concerning retired staff; obtaining proper representation on the Trustee Board and Superannuation Committee – and many more including the introduction

of an AGM for our Defined Benefit Scheme. On the night, the Trustees presented accounts for 2016 and over 400 members (mostly pensioners) had travelled from Cork, Waterford, Mayo, Galway, and other distant parts. The above long-held grievances were outlined by John Nugent (Vice Chair RSA). He also cited pensions being frozen for eight years, and not having the levy issue dealt with by the Equality Tribunal, because complainants were more than one year retired – and the same refusal by the Labour Court. The commitment of members, and their support for the officers of our association at the meeting, gives testimony to the widely-held view that ESB RSA is to the forefront in securing

TALK TO DUBLIN... ...TALK TO US
