WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS

Major jobs boost for the Northside THE Northside received a major jobs boost last week when Dublin Aerospace announced it is to create 150 new full-time positions. The aircraft maintenance provider, supported by Enterprise Ireland, will be providing the jobs over the next three years. The significant expansion of the workforce is part of the company’s strategy to double its turnover by 2023. Conor McCarthy, executive chairman of Dublin Aerospace, said: “Since our start-up in 2009 with just 18 staff, our annual turnover has risen from €7 million to €46 million last year and we have been profitable since our second year in operation. “Last year saw further increases in turnover for all three business units: Aircraft Overhaul, Landing Gear and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) Services. “This solid underlying business performance has given us the confidence to create another 150 full-time, permanent engineering and support roles in our Dublin operation.” Continued on page 8

A NORTHSIDE councillor has welcomed news of an offer for some journeys on the new Luas Cross City service. The National Transport Authority (NTA) announced the introduction of a Luas Cross City Introductory Luas Leap Card Off Peak fare. These fares are due to be available from the opening of Luas Cross City for a period of one year. This fare will cost €1 for an adult or student and 50 cent for a child. The fare will apply to travel between Parnell to the North, St Stephen's Green to the South, Jervis to the West and Busáras/ Connolly/George's Dock to the East. This fare will be available during new off peak hours introduced by the National Transport Authority. North Inner City councillor Nial Ring (Ind) said: "Dublin Town/BIDS (Business Improvement Districts), of which I am a board member, has lobbied the NTA for a special cross city fare. “Myself and my fellow

North Inner City councillors have also requested the National Transport Authority (NTA) to recognise the major disruption in the city centre by giving something back to Dubliners. "We all recognised that the work had to be done and traders, customers, tourists, cyclists, buses and motorists all put up with the disruption for the past four and a half years without complaining too much. "The NTA and Luas cross city were excellent in keeping all stakeholders informed of the disruptions in advance, as well as progress on the project and for some time have signalled early December as the completion date of the works and commencement date of the new service, which is going to happen.” Cllr Ring added: "This special fare is most welcome and is rightly seen as a thank you to Dubliners from the NTA and Luas for their co-operation, patience and endurance over the past four and a half years.” The, business group Dublin Chamber also welcomed the announcement.

▪▪ Cllr Nial Ring (Ind) Dublin Chamber Head of Public Affairs, Graeme McQueen, said: “City centre businesses have been hit hard by the Luas works over the past four years. “A perception has grown that Dublin city centre was

a no-go area due to the works and sales have taken a hit as a result.” Mr McQueen added: “Introducing a flat €1 fare will help encourage people to visit the city and to use the Luas to move around."

King of the musicals THE Olivier, Tony and Grammy award-winning ‘Beautiful – the Carole King Musical’ is coming to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from January 9 to 20. Tickets are priced from €26 and are currently on sale through Ticketmaster outlets. Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit song writing team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, before becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. During these formative years, she wrote the

The show also includes the Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann hit songs ‘You’ve Lost that Lovin Feeling’, ‘On Broadway’ and ‘We Gotta Get out of This Place’. Bronté Barbé will lead the multi-talented cast as ‘Carole King’ on the UK and Ireland tour. Bronté was a finalist in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s BBC1 television series ‘Over The Rainbow’ in 2010. Dr John Cuddihy, Acting Assistant National Director for Health Protection said measles can be a serious illness and is highly contagious. “The best protection is to be fully vaccinated with two doses of MMR vaccine,” he said. Measles symptoms include a high fever, red eyes and a red rash that starts on head and spread down the body. This normally starts a few days after onset of illness. The rash consists of flat red or brown blotches, which can flow into each other. It lasts about 4-7 days. The time between exposure to measles and developing the rash is usually 14 days (range 7-21 days). People are infectious from four days before rash starts until four days after.

Big football opportunity for local students FINGAL County Council and the Football Association of Ireland have launched the second year of a programme that gives participants an opportunity to meet their educational requirements while developing football skills. Former Republic of Ireland international Keith Andrews, Mayor of Fingal Cllr Mary McCamley, Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid, and FAI Vice President Donal Conway officially launched the 2017-18 Transition Year Football Development Course at Corduff Community Centre last month. Over the course of the 2017-18 school year, the 26 Transition Year students participating in the programme will mix academic subjects

such as Maths and English with Kick Start 1 and 2 coaching courses and modules in Fitness Instruction, Media Skills and Personal Development as well football training and strength and conditioning work. In addition, the participants will undertake an ITEC Fitness Instructors Course delivered by Litton Lane Fitness Training. They will also return to their local primary school one day a week to work with teachers in the delivery of physical education and gain valuable work experience. The programme is being jointly delivered by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office and the Football Association of Ireland with assistance from Blanchardstown Area Partnership as well as

the participants’ own schools who have released the students to the course for the 2017-18 academic year. Marion Brown, Principal Sports Officer with Fingal County Council, said: “The success of this project’s first year has attracted a lot of positive attention from other local authorities who would also be hugely interested in delivering it to students in their area. I’m confident that the work, preparation and experience brought to this project by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office and the FAI will deliver another beneficial course for the programme’s participants.” Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid welcomed the second year of the TY Football Development Course.

HEALTH Flu plans are updated at meeting MINISTER for Health Simon Harris has met with senior officials from the Department of Health and the HSE for an update on influenza plans for the coming season. The HSE outlined that a National Steering Group is currently in place and each Hospital group and Community Health Organisation (CHO) have developed plans, based on lessons learned from last year. These include additional measures to vaccinate health care workers, as well as measures to control flu in longterm care facilities. The HSE is also running a programme for immunising

at-risk groups including people over 65-years-of-age and pregnant women. Speaking after the meeting, Minister Harris said: “The Chief Medical Officer has informed me that he has been in contact with his counterparts in Northern Ireland and the UK, and at EU level, and all of the available data shows that influenza activity ▪▪ Pictured are Irish martial arts coach John ‘Coach’ Kavanagh (right) and his brother James Kavanagh, King of Snapchat, at the launch of this in Ireland is currently low but year’s Movember campaign. These conditions can be caused by pressure on the skull within the womb from overcrowding, or not Plagiocephaly enough fluid, or if baby is in an awkward position. Injury can occur to babys head, base of the skull or neck if there is difficulty in the birthing process and may not show up until baby is lying for long periods of time. When the injury is severe however, a shock or holding causes the soft tissues which line the bones of the inside of the head to tighten. These tissues will not grow at the same rate as healthy tissues and an injury pattern occurs. The charity highlights that most cancers are treatable and preventable – through early detection and small lifestyle changes. Neil Rooney, Movember Country Lead, said: “Movember has set a 2030 target to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25 per cent. “Men are dying an average of six years younger than women, and we want to highlight ways to tackle this.” Mr Rooney highlighted the issue for Dublin. “According to the National Cancer Registry of Ireland, there has been an average of over 1,500 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in Leinster since 2005,” he said. “We want men suffering from prostate cancer to maintain control of their lives as they undergo treatment, improve their mobility, mental wellbeing and, ultimately, their quality of life.” In addition to tackling key health issues faced by men, the Foundation is working to encourage men to stay healthy in all areas of their life, with a focus on men staying socially connected and becoming more open to discussing their health and significant moments in their lives. He is a smashing young dog who will make a fantastic addition to an experienced home. Porkie was born here and raised with his siblings by his mum and carers. From a young age he has been boisterous and playful and can become overexcited easily. For that reason, it is very important, as he will grow into a large strong boy, that he finds the right home. Porkie is looking for a home with adults who can continue the fantastic training started here at Dogs Trust. This includes basic training, self-control training to help this boy with excitability, and muzzle training as he is a restricted breed. He enjoys the company of other dogs but would need a confident and playful (yet

sensible!) dog to live with if his new family had another pet. Equally, he would be happy in a home without other pets. His owner will need to have an active interest in continuing his training. We cannot wait to wave this sweet boy off to start his new life with a family of his own! If you think you can offer Porkie a loving home, contact Dogs Trust on 01-8791000.

Historical town’s rise to prominence ACCORDING to the old adage, ‘You only get one chance to make a first impression’. In the case of Swords, the second biggest town in the country, after Drogheda, it continues to make a very good first impression. And this is even more important when you consider that when visitors to Ireland get off their flights at Dublin Airport, Swords is the first town they encounter when travelling north. Therefore, it’s imperative that this historical town always puts on its best front, and over the years it hasn’t been found wanting in this regard. And you can thank among others, the Swords Tidy Towns Committee, which has enjoyed big success at national and local level in what has been a hugely productive 2017. In the National Tidy Towns competition in September, Swords won the SuperValu Diversity Award, and shortly after was announced as the Overall Winner of the Fingal Cleaner Communities Award. These awards were hard earned for a town that simply put, has everything including a rich and interesting history, friendly residents, well-maintained housing estates, great shopping areas, quality restaurants and pubs, parks, a beautifully restored castle, excellent transport network, hard-working community groups, well-known sports clubs and sports personalties, businesses that provide huge employment in the town and a very active local chamber of Continued on page 22

Historical town’s rise to prominence Continued from page 21 commerce (Fingal Dublin Chamber). Bustling Swords continues to experience huge growth in quality shopping areas and services. It is quite simply, a shopper’s paradise for locals and visitors alike. Developments that have had a positive impact on the rapidly expanding town include the Pavilions Shopping Centre and the Airside Retail and Airside Enterprise Parks. Other areas providing excellent services include Swords Main Street and Plaza Shopping Centre, Applewood Village and the Boroimhe Shopping Centre. There is also the Metro Point Business Park, located on the proposed Metro North route. The Pavilions Shopping Centre in particular, has been a phenomenal success since it opened in the heart of Swords. Since its acquisition in 2006 by commercial property developer Chartered Land, Swords Pavilions has become one of Dublin’s most successful shopping centres. Located adjacent to the M1 at Swords, the centre comprises over 85 stores, is anchored by Dunnes Stores and Superquinn and boasts an 11-screen cinema complex, Movies@Swords. The centre attracts over 200,000 visitors every week and has parking for 2,000 cars.

Landmarks in Swords AS you would expect in a town the size of Swords there are a large number of landmarks. Swords Castle is principal among them. Fingal County Council is to be commended for the fantastic work it has carried out over many years during an ambitious restoration programme at the castle. It was originally the residence of the Archbishops of Dublin around the year 1200. Visitors to Swords can now look forward to taking a tour of the castle which is open to the public from Monday to Friday. While the castle provides a vital link with Swords’ past, the town’s most important modern building is Fingal County Hall. This stunning building opened at the beginning of the last decade and in terms of providing services has made a huge difference to the lives of local people. The multi-million pound project was the culmination ▪▪ Fingal County Hall is a major landmark in the town. Clean sweep for Swords MEMBERS of the Swords Tidy Towns Committee were celebrating again recently after being announced as the overall winner at the annual Fingal Cleaner Communities Awards. Swords Tidy Towns was awarded the top prize for their work in improving the appearance of the St Colmcille’s Well area. It follows their fantastic success in the National Tidy Towns competition when they finished with 305 points in their category and won the SuperValu Diversity Award. In the Cleaner Communities Awards, there were 76 entries across 15 different categories, ranging from Best Front Garden to the Best Example of Business Waste Management Initiative. JC Savages Supermarket: standing the test of time IN this day and age, isn’t it great that there are still a few independent family-run grocery stores left in Ireland? These stores are a link to our past when going the extra mile for the customer was the norm and shoppers were on first name terms with all the staff. One of these independent family-run grocery stores still thriving in 2017 is JC’s Supermarket in Swords, which is steeped in the fabric of this historical town. The Savage family is fourth generation traders in Swords since the early 1900s. Robert Savage, JC Savage’s grandfather, opened the original shop on main street Swords in 1913. Following Robert’s death, the shop on the main street was run by Robert’s son, Joe Savage, and his sister May. Joe and May ran the shop

At that stage Joe’s oldest son J.C. joined the business and injected cash into the shop and managed to turn the business around. Indeed, the business became so successful J.C. was able to obtain a loan from Bank of Ireland to build the store on Rathbeale Road in 1977. Over four decades, with JC

at the helm until his untimely death in 2010, JC’s Supermarket on Rathbeale Road enjoyed huge success despite stiff competition from multi-national giants. The late JC Savage built the supermarket into the successful business it is today, employing over 130 people in the store. His children Michael, Robert, Niall and Philomena now run the store, supported by an excellent management team and

staff. Some people might say the supermarket is very lucky to be one of the last independent family-run grocery stores in Ireland. However, it is nothing to do with luck and everything to do with hard work, dedication and ensuring that customer satisfaction is the Number 1

priority. In 2018, the Savage family will be investing over €1.7 million in rejuvenating the store, building a new cafe and carrying out a complete internal revamp. Nothing gets in the way of progress for this special business that has stood the test of time!

So please join us in J.C’s Supermarket from the 17th of November onwards for 44 days of celebration offers (In J.C’s you always get at least 10% extra value).

Work to Learn programme is extended to Swords A NEW programme aimed at helping some of Ireland’s most disadvantaged young people to develop skills in finding work has been extended to Swords. The ‘Work to Learn’ programme exposes participants to the world of work and the skills required to operate effectively in it, through a structured and supported process involving preparation, place-

ment and reflection. The programme challenges the young person involved to undertake a paid part-time job with all the responsibilities that entails. The programme supports employers to become actively involved in the young person’s learning, development and progression. This is done through the placement itself and by way of a series of structured assessments of the

Due to the success of the programme in Kilkenny, where approximately 20 young persons have participated to date, it is planned to roll out the programme to other Garda Youth Diversion Projects across the country. Annmarie Thompson, from Swords/Baldoyle Youth Service, said: “The programme has two target groups, Garda Youth Diversion Project participants and the wider community, specifically the business community, often the target of youth crime and anti-social behaviour. “This programme will provide valuable experience and learning for the young persons involved and will help them to establish a good work ethic, gain

providing a learning environment for young people who are at risk of involvement in, or have been involved in, offending behaviour. “The successful operation of the programme is dependent on a level of cross community co-operation that requires the GYDP, youth services and the business community to work

together to create opportunities for the young persons involved. “This programme will provide valuable experience and learning for the young persons involved and will help them to establish a good work ethic, gain useful skills and to respect others, including their employer.”

Those involved wish to thank local employers Centra (Main Street), Elvery Sports (Pavillions Shopping Centre), Ultimate Styling (Main Street), Ultimate Barber (Main Street) and Centra (River Valley) who have embraced the programme and taken on seven youth participants.

Memories of Swords SWORDS is one of the largest suburban areas in the country, having experienced a huge population growth in recent years. LORRAINE MURPHY recalls some memories of growing up in the capital of Fingal. 1. Hanging around outside the Amusements, known as the ‘Musees’, and watching the really cool ones going in. 2. Drinking down the Jacko, “where everyone knows your name”. 3. The Central disco upstairs and sitting on the covered pool tables. 4. The Big Tree - where the old style (but sounder) Swords people drank. 5. Making up dances with your friends for Fingallian's disco and wearing your shades even though it was dark. 6. Going into town on a Saturday with £20 to buy an outfit for that night. 7. The Lord Mayor's disco bar where getting in was a weekly roulette, no matter your age or proof of ID 8. Falling over the steps of the Acorn Shop. 9. JC's Supermarket and him giving us a laugh with his funny intercom chat. The

offers - when they're gone, there's more! 10. Michael Savage's supermarket in the Main Street smaller and more expensive… but very handy. 11. Taking a walk with your fella to the Corn Field, now Highfields. You knew what that meant. 12. The Scout Den disco where the cool kids smoked their brains out upstairs and the lesser mortals danced in a circle looking moody. 13. Jets. Need I say more? 14. The Jets bus. Last chance saloon. 15. The last 41c home on a Saturday night. The boogie bus. 16. Clarke's shop - if they didn't sell it, it didn't exist. 17. Being excited when the Omni Centre opened in Santry as it meant only having to spend an hour on the bus. 18. Crying when another tourist delayed the bus going through the airport. 19. Who's Eddie? playing the Harp on a Monday night. 20. The hollow at the back of the School House - when you couldn't be bothered to make the journey to the Jacko. 21. The shoe mender's – it’s still there! 22. When after the pub you

had two options - go to the Roxy for chips or pay a fortune for a taxi to Tamango or Jets. 23. Ordering red lemonade in The Lord Mayor’s on a Sunday night because you wanted to see someone and had spent all your money on Saturday. 24. Ryan's – where you tried to talk nice grownups into buying you cans of Tennants. 25. Summer projects that took us to exotic places like Clara Lara and the zoo. 26. Fishing for minnos in the Jacko with nets made from tights. 27. The big field where St Colmcille's Girls’ School is now. The first time they'd cut the grass and you'd be allowed to play there – I can still remember the smell. 28. Being “claimed” by large, aggresive girls. Not only was this considered an acceptable form of bullying, it was one worthy of an audience. 29. Running through St Colmcille’s Cemetry for a dare - one very scary place. 30. Many establishments now gone including the old sit-down river café, Mary O'Grady’s shop and Donoghue’s, both on North Street.

The V90 is not just any estate... it’s a Volvo estate Seán Creedon I HAVE driven a few big Volvo cars in recent months like the XC60 and XC90. Last week I was also in a Volvo, but this time is wasn’t a high vehicle, but the elegant V90 estate. In the SUVs I felt like the ‘king of the road’, whereas the estate had a more luxurious, you could say limousine feel to it. Often estates can give an image of practical family cars where the boot is packed with wellingtons, sports gear or maybe bags of potatoes. Well there is plenty of room for the spuds and the golf clubs in the V90, but this is not just any estate it’s a Volvo estate. Volvo realise they are

reinventing a classic. The V90 is a successor to the real Volvo estates of yesteryear. The famous ‘square back’ look is gone and has been replaced with a more streamlined design. The V90 has much the same design as the massive XC90. The cars share the same distinctive radiator grille and lights, which are really cool at the front and back. As a nation we are huge fans of estate cars. Apart from the small shopkeepers who need a massive boot when they visit the cash and carry wholesale outlets, maybe there are not enough of us who are into the shooting and fishing lifestyle. Inside, the dash area is much the same as the XC90.

The upright touch screen is impressive and works well once you can figure out what all the controls are for. The leather seats were soft and very comfortable. I am always impressed with cars that have a walnut trim on the dash. This time the trim was more brown than walnut, but it was still classy looking and added a lovely finishing touch to the interior decor. My D4 Inscription test model was an automatic with 190 brake horse power and was a joy to drive. It had elements of semi-autonomous driving like staying in the proper lane. The technology worked once you keep some pressure on the steering wheel, but I think we are still a few years away from driverless

▪▪ The new Volvo V90

cars. The entry price for the V90 is €47,745, but my test model with lots of extra brought the price to €61,100. Road tax is €200.

Normally I am moaning about high prices for luxurious cars, but this time I think you do get luxury and that five-star experience for your 61K.

My only criticism is that there is no spare wheel, even though there is plenty of room - all you get is that dreaded repair kit. It’s a really long motor

and the boot is massive and there is a ‘well’ space for a spare. And if you leave down the rear seats there is massive space to carry any bulky item you can think of.

coming evening, Damien Smyth, Dealer Principal at Airside SEAT, said: “We are thrilled to officially launch Airside SEAT by treating people to a really special evening of food, drink and some of the most renowned names in GAA. Minister takes to the road in Renault ZOE THE Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, hit the road recently in the new 100 per cent electric Renault ZOE ZE 40. The minister is test driving the ZOE as he travels to engagements and meetings in the course of his normal working week, including between his constituency of Roscommon-Galway and Dáil Eireann. The Renault ZOE ZE 40 has the longest range of any mainstream electric vehicle, which Renault estimates at up to 300km, meaning the

minister can travel from Dublin to Roscommon and around Dublin city without any so-called ‘range anxiety’. In Budget 2018, Minister Naughten’s department announced funding of €10 million to incentivise the use of electric vehicles (EVs). New grants to continue to support the installation of home-charge points will be available from January 1 for new and second-hand electric cars. There will also be a 0% rate of Benefit in Kind for EVs for one year as an interim measure while a BIK review on vehicles takes place,

and additional funding will be provided to support the provision of public charging with an increase in the number of rapid chargers available. Minister Naughten is driving the Signature Nav version of the new Renault ZOE in pearl white, complete with built-in sat nav and BOSE 3D sound system. Minister Naughten said: “With the measures outlined in this year’s budget, the Government aims to make going electric more accessible for Irish motorists. “As I travel from Roscommon to Dublin in the Renault

ZOE during the course of my work, I hope to demonstrate how efficient, cost-effective and seamless the switch to electric can be.” Patrick Magee, Country Operations Manager, Renault Ireland, added: “We are delighted with the provisions for electric cars made by Minister Naughten and the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment in Budget 2018. “The continuation of free home-charge points is absolutely necessary to help encourage more drivers to go electric, as is the 0% rate

to be talked about more and awareness needs to be increased on all aspects of the EV - having the minis-

Ford's ST-Line Mondeo is impressive Sean Creedon Ford introduced their ST line of cars earlier this year to celebrate 100 years in Ireland. At present the ST range consists of the Fiesta, Focus, Kuga and the Mondeo which I drove last week. At the launch of the STLine Ford’s Irish MD Ciaran McMahon said: ‘‘With the STLine you get the sporty looks and the dynamics, but you don’t get the running costs. At Ford, Vignale stands for premium, luxury and style,

while the ST-Line is aimed at a different customer. We think we will be more successful with the ST-Line than we have been with the Vignale range.’’ Due to a switch of location by Ford for their manufacturing plant from Genk in Belgium to Valencia in Spain, we waited a long time for the new Mondeo to arrive in Ireland. But when the car got here it was voted Irish Car of the Year for 2016. My Mondeo ST-line came in Frozen white, which was impressive. It was a 2.0-li-

There are so many goodies inside and on the outside of the car in the ST-Line that

you will be spoiled. It’s a massive car and my test model also had a sunroof which certainly added to the overall look. The ‘look’ begins with an impressive grille, which really catches your eye. Inside, all the controls on the dash are well laid out and so easy to use. You get ST-line seats and steering

wheel, which I thought was a bit skinny. My daughter, who is my daily front seat passenger, agreed that the heating and radio controls were user friendly, unlike some other models I drove recently. There is plenty of leg and head room for five passengers and the boot is enormous. Underneath that boot

you will find a ‘mini’ spare wheel. There are so many SUVs on the road nowadays, but if you want to experience the luxury that a classy looking saloon or hatchback has to offer, then have a test drive in the muscular-looking Mondeo. I think you will be impressed. The Mondeo has probably

won as many awards as Ronaldo or Messi since it was first introduced in 1992 and it continues to be a winner. Prices start at €34,295 for the ST-Line and naturally there are lot of extras, if you have the cash to buy them. For example the panoramic roof will cost you an extra €950 and the rear-view camera is €600.

HOUSE & HOME

Spanish holiday home won’t Costa fortune THE Irish love affair with Spain shows no sign of abating, and it’s tempting many holidaymakers to look for a permenant base in the Spanish sunshine. The Costa Blanca region is a great choice, and Irish owned, Spanish based Matador Property Inmobiliaria says it can help find the right holiday home. With over 20 years expe-

rience selling Spanish property, the Matador Property team has a vast knowledge of helping clients purchase with the minimum of worry. There’s a huge selection of properties, both new and resale, to choose from and Matador has an after sales service offering help on legal services through an established solicitors firm. The company can also assist with furnishing and

anything else needed to complete the dream of owning a property in Spain. The Costa Blanca, or White Coast, is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations. The region extends 200 kilometres along the Mediterranean coast through the province of Alicante, stretching from Gandia to Torrevieja. Visitors are spoilt for choice, as the destinations

are varied and diverse with resorts to suit every taste from the most bustling and cosmopolitan such as Alicante itself, or Benidorm, to those that still maintain their rural air beside the sea, like Moraira. To the north, a curtain of mountains runs parallel to the sea, descending at times to form cliffs while to the south, a vast plain of sand patches, palm trees

and salt deposits make up the backdrop for the beaches. From the valleys, which are covered with stepped orchards and keep alive its Moorish past, to the palm trees of unmistakable African origin, the horizons of the Costa Blanca offer the most varied attractions. Keswick collection WHEN it comes to great design looks, be it in dresses or decor, sometimes it is the quiet, subtle pieces that produce the most impact. Neptune's new Keswick collection of occasional tables is a case in point. A celebration of brass and glass, Keswick's coffee, console and side tables are the equivalent of a little black dress for the home. Inspired by the glamour of the Art Deco era, they look sophisticated whether you use them for storage, display, or simply as a practical occasional table. And the inspirational designers at Neptune have plenty of ideas on how we can make the most of these elegant creations in our homes. Perhaps the most versatile piece in the collection, the Keswick console table, with its slender profile, works well

in narrow entryways and can hold its own in a more spacious setting. If you like to be creative you could use them alongside a kitchen island to create an impromptu, but sophisticated, breakfast bar. They are just the right height to sit at and just wide enough to eat comfortably on, without taking up too much space. The Keswick coffee table is also full of creative potential. Lightweight in looks and subtly reflective, it makes a stunning centrepiece in a living room. But always thinking outside the box as it were, Neptune designers suggest that by combining two Keswick tables in a staggered formation you can place your most beautiful books and vases on the shelves to create an elegant still-life. In another ingenious move, the Keswick small cube coffee table and rect-

angular side table were designed to be on the floor, however they don't have to be used this way. Placed on top of a counter or sideboard, for example, these pieces can become a wonderful framework for a cocktail bar. You can arrange your bottles on the lower shelves, and glassware on top and a mirror behind the tables will add a touch of Art Deco-style glamour. Speaking of a little extra glamour, how about using the console tables in a bathroom or bedroom to display favourite perfume bottles and jewellery? Equally, the cubed coffee and rectangular side tables could sit alongside a bathtub to hold bath oils and scented candles for unwinding in the evenings. Altogether, the Keswick from Neptune really is the most captivating tale of when brass met glass. See www.neptune.com for Irish stockists of the products mentioned above.

TRAVEL

Europe’s airport to city transport costs are revealed NOW that autumn is here, and the summer holidays are well and truly behind us, many Irish holidaymakers may be considering a short city trip to keep the holiday blues at bay before Christmas. Although travellers from Ireland can often find cheap flights to many European destinations and there’s always hotel bargains if you choose your dates carefully, many overlook the time and money spent getting from the airport to their city of choice - and on a quick city break, time is everything. In an effort to help travellers maximise their time, travel search engine Kayak.ie has collected data on the most popular European cities for Irish holidaymakers, revealing the average costs and travel time to expect when visiting these destinations.

QUICK CONNECTIONS:

For those looking to start their holiday without wasting a single moment, Arrecife, in the Canary Islands is undisputedly the best option. With its airport conveniently located just seven kilometres from the city centre, travellers barely have to wait at all to start soaking up the sights. And with public transport available at ▪▪ Getting from the airport to the city fast means more time to enjoy your break. just €1.40, the short trip to and from the airport can save travellers more than €10 on taxi fares. Other convenient options include Faro, Portugal, as well as Amsterdam (Schipol Airport), both of which are reachable in around a quarter of an hour by public transport (15, 17 minutes). For those who prefer the comfort of a taxi, the quickest options are Arrecife, Faro, Lisbon and Palma de Mallorca, all of which can be reached from the airport in 15 minutes or less. However, travellers should be prepared to pay more: at €27, the quick trip from the Mallorca airport to the city centre will set travellers back €1.80 a minute.

BEST BARGAINS:

Price-conscious travellers looking to save their money for sightseeing and shopping should probably start their trip by skipping the taxi. This is especially true when travelling to Paris, Rome or London. In each of these cities, travellers can save more than €45 by choosing to use public transport options instead. In the British capital, which has the highest taxi prices out of the top 20 most popular cities for Irish tourists, travellers can save €46 by opting to rely on public transport - and they’ll also arrive in the city 20 minutes earlier compared to those choosing to ride in a taxi. Apart from Arrecife, with its €1.40

the destinations for which travellers should budget extra time and money to reach the airport. Rome, Paris, and Athens, all famous for their traffic congestion, can each take at least 40 minutes, no matter the mode of travel chosen. However, travellers should also plan extra time if they are travelling to Budapest (45 minutes by train and 30 by taxi), Prague (40 minutes by bus and HIGHER COSTS, LONGER 30 by taxi), and Madrid (45 minutes by JOURNEYS The Kayak.ie analysis also highlights train and 20 by taxi).

When it comes to costs, London and Paris are unsurprisingly the two standouts, with even public transportation options costing at least €10 from airport to city centre. Visitors to the French capital should expect to pay €10.30 for the 40 minute trip to the city centre, while those visiting London will need to shell out a whopping €24.30. John-Lee Saez, travel expert at Kayak.ie says: “Many low-cost carriers are known to fly into airports located on the

airport connection, the cheapest cities to reach by public transport are Rome (€1.50), Budapest (€1.70), and Lisbon (€1.90). However, holidaymakers can cut their travel time in half (15 minutes) with a reasonable €8 cab ride to Lisbon, compared with the 30 minute journey on the underground.

outskirts of cities, which can be difficult to reach - and sometimes even more expensive than the cost of the flight. “Luckily, using Kayak.ie’s Explore tool, Irish holidaymakers can find the best flight offers for their respective travel budgets. “Simply enter a departure airport, the desired date and flight duration, and the amount they wish to spend, and Explore will show you the matching destinations - all laid out nicely on the world map.”
