Charity cancels its fundraiser due to heatwave

IT’S PLAYTIME Dublin City Council provided plenty of fun for National Play Day in Merrion Square on July 1. Running, climbing, jumping, outdoor street games, action songs, skipping and cycling were just some activities encouraged to improve children’s physical and social development. AN animal welfare charity postponed a fundraiser in north county Dublin last weekend due to the weather. The Irish Blue Cross was due to hold its ‘Bark in the Park’ sponsored dog walk last Sunday ( July 8) at Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan. However, the charity took the decision in light of the high temperatures while also urging pet owners to be aware of how excessive heat affects their pet. Supporters of the charity have been registering to

The charity has assured supporters that the event will be hosted later in the year when it is cooler and safer to do so. In a statement, a spokesperson for The Irish Blue Cross said: “We’re very disappointed to be postponing our event and to have to disappoint so many people who have been looking forward to it, but we feel that this is the right decision to take.

Former TD calls for dementia supports A FORMER Minister for Justice is backing calls for the Government to invest â‚Ź12 million towards community supports for people with dementia. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) made the call in its Pre-Budget Submission, ‘Dementia Support Across Ireland – Building Communities of Care’. Nora Owen, who was a Fine Gael TD for the old Dublin North constituency, is a carer for her husband, Brian, who

has dementia. “In Ireland today, people with dementia, their carers and families are still dealing with inadequate supports, said Ms Owen. “New mapping of dementia-specific services shows people living in Ireland do not have equal access to a basic minimum standard of community services. “Budget 2019 could change this. “In Dublin, we still need more vital supports – but it’s not just in my county,

it is right across the country. Let’s make access dementia support across Ireland more equal. “Let’s build communities of care for people with dementia in Ireland in Budget 2019.â€? Ms Owen added: “Please get involved – contact your local TD and please show your support to the 55,000 people living with dementia in Ireland.â€? The ASI is calling on the Government to invest â‚Ź7.415 million for a minimum standard of community services in

each county; â‚Ź2.31 million to roll out a Dementia Adviser service across Ireland; â‚Ź2.24 million to provide Key Workers in every HSE Local Health Office for the coordinated care of each person with dementia; and â‚Ź852,000 for Dementia Inclusive Community Coordinators across Ireland. Alzheimer Society of Ireland chief executive Pat McLoughlin said: “The mid-term review of the implementation of the National Dementia Strategy, which was

released in May, identifies emerging gaps in the supports and services for people with dementia and their families across Ireland.â€? He added: “The midterm report concluded that additional funding is required to establish new dementia services and structures right across the country and, at the launch of our PreBudget Submission 2019, we are simply calling on the Government to implement their own recommendations.â€?Â

The weather can bring out our best and worst TONY McCULLAGH Editor Dublin People Group t.mccullagh@dublinpeople.com

WHAT we initially suspected was just typical Leaving and Junior Cert weather, cruelly timed to heap further pressure on the nation’s students, has certainly gone the distance. As I write this, the temperature is hovering somewhere in the midtwenties. That said, by the time we go to press and you get to read this article, the country could be in the grip of another Siberian big freeze. Let’s hope not.

Extreme weather conditions, as we see them, have a tendency to bring out the best and worst in us. Just a few months ago we were being praised by the Government for heeding the red alert that had to be issued when the country was faced with a national bread shortage due to the snow. With the schools closed and families forced to talk to each other, we bravely weathered the storm and prayed that the wi-fi wouldn’t be affected. While the blizzard-like conditions were certainly dramatic by Irish standards, our foreign cousins and friends in places like Canada and the USA scoffed at our overreaction. “You call that snow, huh?” For the most part, the current dry spell has been enjoyable, allowing us

sun is shining. Sure isn’t Ireland the best little country in the world when we have the weather? But even the sun can bring out the dark side in some people: the idiots who discard their litter in parks and on beaches; the brain-dead morons who endanger their dogs by leaving them locked in hot cars; the

sunburnt, topless, drunken thugs who flock to Dublin’s scenic spots and cause havoc. These types of people, thankfully, seem to be in the minority. Let’s hope that we get just enough rain to replenish our water stocks. After that, bring on the good weather for the rest of July and August!

Approval of €14 million disabled persons’ scheme A TOTAL of €14 million funding in respect of the Disabled Persons’ Grant Scheme has been announced. The scheme is demandled and allows local authorities to prioritise works based on need. Animal charity cancels fundraiser over heatwave Continued from page 1 signs of heatstroke and exhaustion at their clinics over the past number of weeks. Una O’Toole, Head of Veterinary Services with The Irish Blue Cross, said: “Preventing heatstroke rather than treating it is of upmost important as once a dog showing signs of exhaustion or heatstroke, often the damage is already done. “It’s crucial for pet owners to be alert to the risk and take appropriate measures to prevent it. “Some dogs may be more susceptible than others, such as short nose breeds like Pugs and Boxers, dogs with underlying conditions, overweight or older dogs. Missing a few walks in extreme temperatures won’t be fatal, but heatstroke can be.” The Irish Blue Cross is urging all pet owners to be aware of how

Stout, an Irish Blue Cross friend, enjoying a cooling paddle in the water at Rathfarnham Park. excessive heat affects their pet and be aware of the tell-tale signs. Some practical tips it recommends are: •Keep dogs safe and cool indoors for as much of the day as possible but particularly when the sun is at its hottest between 11am and 3pm, •Limit your pet’s exercise or playtime outdoors and only during cooler times of the day such as very early morning or late evening, providing your pet is in good health, •Make sure your dog has access to plenty of clean water at all times and always carry water for your dog on walks,

•As a rule, if a path is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for dogs’ paws •Watch for signs of exhaustion like heavy panting, dribbling, loss of energy or collapse, •If you suspect that your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cooler area indoors or into the shade and wet their coat with cool water. Contact your local vet immediately, and •Never use freezing water to cool a dog as this can cause their temperature to drop too quickly and this can lead to shock. Details for the remaining events can be found at www. barkinthepark.ie

Howth Dental Surgery has lately and pioneeringly added the benefits of Basal Bone Dental Implantology to the fully comprehensive range of services which we offer to our patients. Treatments such as fixed Damon System orthodontics, Orthopedics including arch development and jaw alignment (i.e. getting rid of the “Bugs Bunny” mal-occlusion, with its associated symptoms such as migraines, if not treated properly) and conventional implantology used for retaining crowns, bridges and over dentures. This exciting new field of Basal Bone Implantology as developed by Professor IHDE of Germany confers profound benefits for both patient and dentist. The system allows us to overcome the barrier of poor supporting dental bone as we actively seek out and engage into the patient’s skeletal bone – just as Orthopaedic surgeons do when fixing fractured limbs. Unlike tooth bone, this bone is always there in various parts of the jaw – and because of its hardness and resilience – it can give the implant immediate or primary firm stability. This allows the clinician to immediately load the implants with the final product, be it a bridge or crowns. It is ideal for those seeking a fixed in bridge solution to replace that awkward and annoying full or partial denture. Generally the protocol involved permits us to place the implant without the usual surgical interference of raising the surgical flap, doing a sinus lift and or bone grafting. Furthermore, the protocol allows us to process and fit the final product without any ‘wait period’. In fact for optimum results the protocol requires that the implants are so as to speak ‘loaded’ straightaway. These Basal Bone implants have a polished surface with their ‘business‘ end engaging into the basal bone which is well away from the oral cavity – thus nearly eliminating the possibility of the phenomenon known as ‘implantitis’ which often causes failure of conventional implants – and they also therefore have the added advantage that even if a patient is a smoker or a diabetic, to give two examples, that is not a precluding factor for receiving the benefit of these implants. Best of all of all the advantages is the economic costs is lower than conventional – for example a fixed upper bridge using about ten implants costs in total about €6,500 of which 20% is refundable with the Med2. Dr Liam has recently completed an intensive four day training course to finesse his skills in the use of these implants in Kerala in India. This location may seem surprising to some but due to the genetic makeup this system of implants is very popular in India. When I mention genetic makeup, Indians have a propensity to lose their teeth at middle age due to early loss of gum/tooth bone. Needless to say the training was done under strict IHDE implant guidelines and all the instructors had received their Masters after intensive study with Professor IHDE in Germany. For further information about this dental treatment please visit their website at www.ihde-dental.de If you want to learn more about your suitability for this treatment modality or indeed any other dental treatments eluded to, we offer an initial complimentary consultation which may also include x rays. Please contact Dr Liam Ó Droma, 2 Radharc an Oileain, Harbour Road, Howth, Co Dublin, 01 8395254 or email lod@orthocosmetics.ie

Local priority urged in bus plan A NORTHSIDE TD is calling on the National Transport Authority (NTA) to ensure that the travelling public in Fingal are prioritised in the planning and rolling out of proposed new bus routes under the BusConnects plan. Speaking after details of the plan were announced last week, Dublin Fingal TD Louise O’Reilly (SF) said people who are affected across the capital, either by route changes, building works or property acquisition need to be kept informed of all proposed changes. "I am calling on them (NTA) to ensure that they engage fully with local communities in the planning of this project,” she said. “Dublin’s public transport services do require modernisation, and the city clearly requires increased bus services and new routes. “However, this needs to be done in a way

that is convenient for passengers first and foremost. With the largest commuter travel reliant on Bus & Rail in north county Dublin, it is vital that local communities are involved through the process. “Under these new proposals the new bus network has no 33, no 33x, only a 33a to Swords, and no bus at all from Skerries, Rush or Lusk to Dublin city.” Deputy O’Reilly said that as Fingal is the fastest growing area in the State, with one of the largest populations of young families, a sustainable transport infrastructure is vital to the continuing growth of the local economy. “According to Census 2016, 58 percent of commuters rely on the car to access to and from work,” she said. “This heavy reliance is due to any real progressing of Metrolink

or the DART to Balbriggan. “It is not realistic that the North Fingal region which has increased in population by 79.4 percent in 20 years would have its bus services reduced by a plan to improve bus services.” A spokesperson for the National Transport Authority said BusConnects is about enabling the fastest possible trip on public transport, and in some instances, that means rail rather than bus. “For that area of Fingal, what we have designed is a service that seeks to do two things: allow direct travel to the nearest major commercial centre in Swords, and for travel to city centre, provide good connections to rail services,” the spokesperson told Northside People. “We welcome Deputy O’Reilly’s acknowledgement that

the network requires modernisation. “The report was published on Monday ( July 2), and the process of public consultation will get underway on July 16. “We look forward to the participation of Deputy O’Reilly and her constituents in that process. “As one element of the consultation, members of the public will be asked to share their views with us by participating in an online survey.” Meanwhile, Dublin Bay North TD Tommy Broughan (Ind) is urging everyone to study the report and maps in detail, to educate themselves about the proposed changes and to partake in the public consultation, designed to give them a say on the matter. “I, of course, will be doing the same and will be submitting my own observations during the

Link road is on schedule THE Balbriggan Leadership Group has welcomed news that work on the Stephenstown Link Road is on schedule and due to be completed in November. The Leadership Group recently held its second meeting since its formation and was given an update on the Link Road. It will run from the existing roundabout on the Stephenstown Road, through the site and through a roundabout on Clonard Hill Road, linking to the back of Millfield and then on to the Naul Road. The road is a key piece of infrastructure development within Balbriggan as it will open up almost 23 hectares of industrially-zoned lands for development with the potential to bring 900 new jobs to the area. Fingal County Council owns 22.84 hectares of land within Stephenstown of which 10.2 are zoned as General Employment, in the 2017-2023 County

Development Plan with the remaining lands zoned as High Technology. Brian MacCraith, chairman of the Balbriggan Leadership Group, said: “This is another very good initiative aimed at improving Balbriggan and will greatly assist in the economic development of the town.” Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Gráinne Maguire said: “It has been shown already in Balbriggan that the availability of fully serviced sites is a major advantage when it comes to persuading firms to set up in the area and this project has the potential to deliver jobs for our community.” Balbriggan Leadership Group comprises a number of councillors, Senior Fingal County Council officials and key public and private sector stakeholders across the four main pillar themes of Local Economy & Enterprise, Community Affairs & Integration,

Pictured on a recent inspection of work on the Stephenstown Link Road were Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Grainne Maguire, Cllr Malachy Quinn (SF), Coilin O’Reilly, Senior Executive Officer, Department of Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development, Fingal County Council, and Cllr Tony Murphy (Ind). Leadership Group is to develop a long-term socio-economic strategy for the town. The leadership group will

oversee the preparation, drafting and agreement of the strategy which will be finalised and delivered in the autumn.

Funding boost for local organisations MINISTER for Children and Youth Affairs Dr Katherine Zappone has announced the awarding of over €2 million to 51 organisations across the country implementing diverse and innovative projects aimed at improving the lives of children, young people and their families in local communities and nationally. Each of the organisations successfully applied to the Quality and Capacity Building (QCBI) Innovation Funding Measure launched by the Minister in April. The measure is supported by funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund, which is overseen by the Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Seán Kyne. Swan Youth Service (€13,400, Crosscare Youth Services (€45,000)

and the ISPCC (€50,274) were among the Dublin recipients. Speaking about the funding, which attracted a high volume of applications, Minister Zappone said: “Young people can be trapped in disadvantage based on their background, location and family circumstance. “We need to ensure people working with these children, young people and their families are given an opportunity to take a step back and look at the work they are doing. “I recognise that frontline workers are fundamental in improving children’s lives.” “We have learnt so much over the past couple of decades about how to improve our services for children and young people.”

BayFest is a big success THIS year's BayFest provided a fantastic day out for locals in Bayside with a wide variety of entertainment and activities for those in attendance. These included food trucks, bouncy castles for various age groups, live music acts from the stage, an intergenerational arts workshop for children and their grandparents or older relatives, and afternoon tea on the terrace for those who just wanted to take it easy.

One of the highlights was Eanna Ni Lamhna declaring the Bayside Bug Hotel, which has just been built on the ‘Lamb Chop’, open for visitors. Eanna is the popular biologist and environmentalist who presents regularly on radio and television and has written widely on nature and wildlife. Fifty cyclists from Naomh Barrog Cycling Club descended on Bayside Park to get the festival started.

Lord Mayor’s praise for Dublin Pride LORD Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring said he was overwhelmed by the pageantry, colour and noise at the recent Pride Parade in the capital. Mayor Ring, who marched in the parade, said: "You couldn't help but be carried away by the carnival atmosphere. “It was fantastic and gave me a chance to meet and chat with so many people and hear their life experiences first hand. A parade like this is a great opportunity to demonstrate and

experience inclusivity and equality, and this can only be a good thing for all citizens of Dublin and beyond.” The Lord Mayor said that during his year in office, he wants that inclusivity to be extended to other maybe less wellknown or vocal groups who also need to have their voices heard. "I would encourage any groups who feels marginalised or isolated to make contact with the Lord Mayor's office and let’s see if we can make a difference together,” he added.

Film Review 

Incredibles 2 continues to astonish non-believers Paul O'Rourke FOLLOWING the success of the 2004 ‘Incredibles’ movie, a sequel was always on the cards, especially in this age of story regurgitation. In many ways, the surprise is that it’s taken this long for the second film to arrive, and even before it lands in Ireland, worldwide box office numbers have already surpassed the original. There seems to be no end to an audience’s desire to revisit a tried and tested movie formula, and Hollywood appears to be more than happy to feed that hunger. With that in mind, we will stop complaining about ‘Oceans Twenty Four’, ‘Mission Impossible Ten’, or ‘Jurassic World Eight’, as it appears that’s all there is on the menu. As someone once said: we are where we are. ‘Incredibles 2’ expands upon the story of the Parr family, a seemingly ordinary grouping who share secret superpowers which now lay dormant. Helen Parr (Elastigirl) is called

‘Incredibles 2’ is well worth a watch. upon to lead a campaign to bring ‘Supers’ back, while her husband Bob, navigates the day-to-day heroics of normal life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack—

everything. You know you’re in safe hands with writer/director Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles’ and ‘Ratatouille’) and the Pixar team who have brought us many movie classics such as ‘Monsters Inc.’, ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Up’. The premise is fundamentally amusing, superpowers being used in mundane domestic settings such as family squabbles, and in many ways the scenes at home with dad looking after baby are the most enjoyable. The voice talent is recognisable with the unmistakable Holly Hunter as ‘Elastigirl’, Craig T Nelson as ‘Mr Incredible’ and Samuel L Jackson as ‘Frozone’ all featuring. ‘Incredibles 2’ is great fun, has plenty of laughs and lots of great action for you and all your nonincredible family. If you enjoyed the first movie whose superpowers are about to be you will more than likely love this discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, sequel just as much. We award it a review score of 4 when a new villain emerges with incredible stars. a dangerous plot that threatens

Theatrical experience at Botanic Gardens SHIVA Productions, in association with the OPW and Dublin City Council, has been bringing to life a new site-specific theatrical experience on the Northside for the past few weeks. ‘Meet me in the Gardens’, a series of four short plays, is being performed in various locations in the grounds of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. The event concludes this Saturday, July 14 with performances at 2pm and 4pm (duration: 60 minutes). The plays will be digging up the ghosts of the gardens’ riveting past. Based on true events and real life characters, spanning the cholera epidemic to the onset of World War II, audiences will be taken on a thrilling ride through time before being jolted back to our technology-drenched present. Will Medical student, Finn, be able to stomach digging up fresh corpses for Professor Trollope? Will James expose Mary McCoy's secret bustling side-business? Will Molly's date work out, or will it be back to the Tinder drawing board? Tickets cost €11.40 and booking is via Eventbrite.

Back to School allowance due DETAILS of the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance scheme for 2018 have been announced. The allowance is a means-tested onceoff payment aimed at helping families with the costs associated with children returning to school in the autumn. To qualify for the allowance, the applicant must be in receipt of certain social welfare payments or taking part in training, employment or adult education schemes, with total household income below a certain threshold. The allowance will be paid automatically in the week ending Friday, July 13 to approximately 100,000 customers in respect of 170,000 school children.  The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection is currently writing to these customers. Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton and Minister for

Employment Affairs and Social Protection Regina Doherty are encouraging parents who have not previously received the payment but who think they may qualify to check their eligibility. Minister Bruton said: “I recognise the pressure that families are under in relation to back to school costs and I would urge all families to check their eligibility for this scheme which provides a onceoff payment to assist with the costs of school clothing and footwear. “Last year, I issued a circular to all schools requiring them to do everything possible to keep costs down for parents, including the use of generic items, sew on or iron on crests, and making sure that various elements of the uniform can be purchased in multiple stores.” People can check out their eligibility for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance at www.welfare.ie/ backtoschool.

DOGS TRUST CANINE COLUMN

Food can be lethal for dogs Some human foods, besides being fattening to our dogs, are actually toxic to them too. Sometimes, especially if we have recently adopted a larger dog or are minding a friend’s dog, we might not be aware of their reach so items that are usually safely out of the way may no longer be. Chocolate contains theobromine with can be lethal to dogs and the darker the chocolate, the higher the amounts of theobromine. Toxic doses vary according to the size of your dog and, of course, the cocoa content of the chocolate. Symptoms of toxicity include vomiting, excitability, hyper salivation (drooling), excessive thirst, slow heart rate, a sore abdomen, convulsions and in some cases no obvious symptoms are present. Raisins and grapes can also be lethally toxic, although the exact reason why is still unknown. Onions can cause anaemia and gastrointestinal irritation

Always check with your vet if you are concerned that your dog has eaten something dangerous. PHOTO: BIGSTOCK so should be avoided. Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, weakness, hyperthermia, depression and muscle trembling. Xylitol, commonly found in sugar-free foods such as

chewing gum, toothpaste, sweets and baked goods, has been found to cause insulin release which can lead to liver failure in dogs. Yeast dough can rise in your dog’s digestive system

and cause gas to accumulate. Apart from being very painful, it can lead to bloating and potentially cause the stomach to twist which is lifethreatening to your dog. Small bones from chicken

and turkey should also be avoided. They are not toxic but there is a risk of them becoming lodged in the dog’s throat or splintering (especially if cooked) and potentially perforating the

intestinal tract. As a general rule, you should avoid giving your dog any medication that has not been prescribed by a veterinary practitioner. Paracetamol is particularly dangerous as it can lead to death or permanent liver and kidney damage which may require lifelong veterinary treatment. Even if you have a substance at home that your dog has been previously prescribed, it is not safe to use as the dose is likely to be very different for your dog – always, always ask your vet. If you suspect that your dog has consumed something he shouldn’t have, please contact your veterinary practice immediately. Most practices have an emergency out of hours number so it might be a good idea to have this saved in your phone.

Extreme Heat and Your Pet The roads are melting, Ice Cream has suddenly become a rare commodity, and Dublin City has no water... Is it the end of the world? Of course not, our summer has just been condensed into two weeks, that’s all! It seems that the long awaited Leaving Cert weather was delayed till now and, holy-smokes, it is glorious! However, while we’re all enjoying the weather and sunning ourselves every chance we get, our pets probably have no idea why it’s gotten so warm or how to tell us that they’re overheating. With this in mind, we have been busy consulting with our Pet Experts to come up with a simple guide on how you can keep your pet cool, what warning signs to watch for and which Fleetwood Mac album is best for your pets to listen to in order to chill out (Figuratively)! Without further ado, let’s jump in... And cool off!

must be highly vigilant of hunting or working dogs too as they won’t stop should they become too warm. However, an overheated dog can be easily cooled using the Ancol Cooling Coat or the Dogit Water Fountain! One or both of these products is more than ideal for this warm spell for all pets, not just dogs. The Coat can be dipped in cool water and put on your dog for maximum effectiveness, while the fountain provides a fun and cooling drinking experience! If you feel that your dog’s hair is too long you can also book an appointment with our Expert Groomers! Alternatively, playing Rumours from start to finish will also help your dog to cool off (It won’t actually cool him down... but what an album!).

recommend getting the Furminator for cats to strip out their coat, for the time being at least. There’s also the Catit Fountain which is similar to the Dogit one, yet smaller for cats to reach up to. Finally, while dogs prefer the vocals on Rumours; cats are much fonder of Tango in the Night (Don’t ask me why...).

Horses: Horses naturally breathe rapidly after exercising but should it continue 5 or 10 minutes afterwards, that is how you know your horse is too hot. A quick hose-down can often solve this problem. Horses should always have access to clean drinking water but they should also be using an electrolyte supplement to replace fluids lost during sweating. Dogs: Alternatively, you can use a cooler jersey to help Dog’s are probably your horse wick away sweat and to aerate their Cats: the easiest body during exercise. Some increased heartbeat; all of which are tell-tale signs of extreme signs overheating in cats. Always have fresh water available Small Animals: that you really need to be aware of are vomiting and diarrhoea. If for your cat and if you plan on leaving your cat alone First and foremost, small animals which live in glass your dog displays one or both of those symptoms, we in a room, ensure that it is properly ventilated. If you or plastic housing should not be left in direct sunlight, recommend bringing them to a vet immediately. You feel that your cat’s coat is too long for this weather, we ever, especially with the intensity of the sun currently

melting roads. You might as well be leaving them in a car! Should they still look quite warm, you can take a page out of our book and place their water bottle in the fridge till it is chilled. You could also place a chilled litre bottle of water in their enclosure that they could cuddle up to and cool off from. Larger small animals such as rabbits or guinea pigs that have access to a garden should be monitored for signs of overheating such as panting, lethargy and being warm to the touch. The Catit fountain springs to mind again as it is more than suitable for small animals too! Small animals also tend to favour Lindsey Buckingham’s solo stuff rather than Fleetwood Mac as a whole band. Birds and Avians: Unlike all the other animals on this list, birds are the only ones without sweat glands and thus have no way of disposing of excess heat. Birds who are overheating will display characteristics outside of their normal personality. Aggressiveness or excessive passivity can be a dead giveaway that your pet is uncomfortable due to the heat. Provide cool and fresh drinking water and move their cage out of direct sunlight in order to cool down or avoid overheating in your pet birds. Better still, move the cage to a well ventilated room and allow

time for your birds to acclimatise to the cooler breeze flowing through. For their listening pleasure, birds tend to gravitate towards Mr Cash’s Baritone voice to keep them chilled on a warm summer’s day. 5 Top Tips for Pet Care during Extreme Heat: • Always, always, always provide fresh drinking water, always. Like seriously, always. • The ground is going to be super hot, as is the sand at the beach! Be aware of this when walking your dog. • Don’t strain your pets in extreme heat, let them be lazy! • Imagine if the sun was shining through a big glass pane in the sky. The temperature would double... Think of your small animals in their plastic cages. • Some bands can only be played loud to be truly appreciated (Metallica, I’m looking at you...), but do think of your animals’ hearing during garden parties and the like. Hopefully you’ll now be well equipped to monitor and supervise your pets in the wonderful heat we’ve been having! Always be on the lookout for overheating in your pets and if you’re ever in doubt; phone your vet or your local Equipet store for help and advice. Be safe in the sun everyone and don’t forget to cream the tops of your ears (And your dogs ears, too)!

Stunning Lake Geneva is Switzerland’s Riviera Rick Steeves ARCHING around most of southern end of Switzerland’s southwest corner, Lake Geneva laps against the French border with a serene beauty. A collage of castles, museums, resort towns, and vineyards, this region merits a few days of exploration - though you can enjoy a swift overview of its highlights even in just one day. Last summer, I took time to relax and enjoy the tranquil and elegant city of Lausanne (the area's best home base). With a characteristic old town, towering cathedral, and delightful lakeside promenade, it has the energy and cultural sophistication of a larger city, but is home to only about 140,000 people.

The Romans founded Lausanne on the lakefront - but with the fall of Rome and the rise of the barbarians, the first Lausanners fled for the hills, establishing today's tangled old town a safe distance uphill from the lake. The steep city feels like a lifesize game of Chutes and Ladders. Two-dimensional maps don't do justice to the city's bridges, underpasses, stairways, hills and valleys. Even the Métro trains and platforms are on an incline. Wandering the pedestrianised Rue de Bourg in the old town, I could see the multiethnic makeup of today's Switzerland on parade. Though the region's official language is French, the language situation is pot luck, with German and Italian also prevalent (be careful to pronounce Lausanne correctly – ‘lohzahn’ - and don't confuse it with Luzern). One of Lausanne's highlights, the Collection de l'Art Brut, is like nothing else you'll see in Europe; a museum filled with art

produced by untaught artists - many of them imprisoned or legally insane, and all of them as free-spirited as artists could possibly be. Down by the lake is another tourist district, Ouchy (pronounced ‘oo-shee’). It's the happy domain of commoners, office workers and rollerskaters strutting their stuff - a fun zone with fountains, parks, promenades and restaurants. The Ouchy lakefront is also where you'll find the top-notch Olympic Museum, set in a beautiful lakeside park where the Olympic flame flickers between editions of the games. This is your chance to see Jesse Owens’ spiked jumping shoes, Katarina Witt’s red skating dress, a basketball signed by the 1992 American ‘Dream Team’ and Cathy Freeman’s running shoes. The most picturesque way to see Lake Geneva is by a two-hour boat cruise from Lausanne to the region's best sight: the island castle of Château de

Have the urge to travel?

Elegant French-style villas with pastel colours, frilly balconies, and mansard roofs grace the lakeshore and instil an air of gentility. On my last visit, I sailed past the dreamy terraced banks of Lavaux vineyards and on towards Montreux - a relaxed resort famous for its jazz festival each July. Though not heavy on sights, Montreux offers sublime views of misty Lake Geneva and the cutglass peaks in the distance. For an easy side-trip from Montreux, hop on the Chocolate Train. It stops at a chocolate

factory and at the foot of Gruyères, the ultratouristy town that's justifiably famous for its cheese, which you can see being made in a cheese production house. The French-speaking Swiss countryside to the north is worth exploring, especially if you're driving. Along with tasty chocolates and fragrant cheese, it's sprinkled with crystal-clear lakes and sleepy cows. My favourite destination in the area, Château de Chillon, is set wistfully at the edge of Lake Geneva, about 20 miles southeast of Lausanne. Because it's built on

a rocky island, this medieval castle has a higgledy-piggledy shape that combines a stout fortress (on the land side) and a residence (on the lake side). Remarkably well preserved, the château has never been damaged or destroyed always inhabited, always maintained. Over the centuries it's been used as an armoury, warehouse, prison, hospital and tourist attraction. The Romantics loved this place. Rousseau, Lord Byron, Victor Hugo, and Goethe were all inspired here, and even Dickens

and Hemingway dropped by Chillon is still Switzerland's best castle experience, with a dank prison, battle-scarred weapons, simple Swissstyle mobile furniture and 800-year-old toilets. Make like a sentry and patrol the ramparts, then (if the coast is clear) curl up on a windowsill to enjoy the tingly lake views. There's plenty of gorgeous scenery in Switzerland, but Lake Geneva is one of its real charms. Whether enjoyed on a stroll through a shoreline park, from the deckchair on a boat cruise, over the wrought iron of your hotel-room balcony, or through the window of a medieval castle, Lake Geneva sparkles with romantic ambiance. Its laid-back vibe makes it the perfect place to just be on vacation.

Motoring 23 Lucky Dubliner drives away in a brand new SEAT Ateca SUV NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EAST 11.07.18

CIRCLE K has announced that Owen Laverty is the winner of its Winter Car Raffle, an initiative that was put in place to help raise much-needed funds for charity partner, The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. As the lucky winner, Owen, from Co Dublin, will take to the driving seat of a new SEAT Ateca SUV, worth €30,000. Earlier this year, customers across the Circle K network and at SEAT dealerships nationwide pledged their support to the initiative by purchasing raffle tickets, with all proceeds raised going directly to the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. This announcement coincides with Circle K revealing that it has raised €350,000 to date for The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation through various fundraising initiatives undertaken by customers and staff nationwide. This includes Small Change for Big Change, The LEGO Exchange, Raise a Teacup and the Winter Car Raffle which ran in conjunction with SEAT Ireland, along with multiple events held internally for staff. These campaigns have resulted in the provision of almost 22,000 hours of home care nursing to date for the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. Founded in 1997, The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation provides direct funding to families of children up to the age of five who suffer from severe intellectual and physical developmental delays. This model of care puts the family at the centre, providing home nursing and respite care that meets their unique needs. Commenting on his raffle win, Owen said: “When I first heard that I had been drawn as the raffle’s winner, I thought someone was twisting my arm! Not only have I won my dream car, but by partaking in the raffle I have had the opportunity to support the invaluable services that the staff at The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation provides to communities nationwide.

“I can’t wait to take my new SEAT Ateca SUV out for a spin.” Judy Glover, Market Director at Circle K Ireland said: “I am delighted to be at Circle K Clonshaugh today to announce Owen as the winner of the winter car raffle. Not only are we thrilled to give the new SEAT Ateca SUV to such a deserving winner, but we are also celebrating the news that €350,000 has been raised to date across the Circle K network in support of The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. I would like to extend my thanks to Circle K staff and customers for their continued support and for contributions to date.” Jean Young, the Communications Manager at The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation, added: “Today is certainly a cause for celebration as we congratulate Owen on winning Circle K’s winter car raffle and we wish him

happy motoring in that fabulous SEAT Ateca SUV. We rely on the generosity of the public, fundraisers and partnerships like this one to continue to provide our service. “The €350,000 raised to date through our partnership with Circle K is invaluable, with every €16 providing one hour of home nursing care and respite to one of our families. The lives of the children under the Jack & Jill wing in every corner of Ireland have greatly benefited from the outstanding fundraising efforts of staff and customers at Circle K sites nationwide. We have also benefited from customers at SEAT dealerships across Ireland through their support towards the Winter Car Raffle. I would like to extend my gratitude to all those involved.” Leslie Walsh, Marketing Communications Manager at SEAT Ireland added:

“The team at SEAT were delighted to come on board as car partner for the winter car raffle in order to help raise additional funds for The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation, which provides such vital

Motoring Peugeot 5008 SUV is a best seller 24

NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EAST 11.07.18

THE NEW peugeot 5008 has taken top spot in the large 7-seat SUV segment for the first six months of 2018. Big brother to the multiaward-winning 3008 SUV, Irish Car of the Year 2018, the stylish new 5008 has taken a whopping 14 per cent of the D-SUV year to date. The sophisticated new 5008 SUV features three rows of seats and the iCockpit, combining a compact steering wheel, touchscreen and digital instrumentation across the range for maximum control and safety. Voted number one by The Irish Times, in the Top 100 Best Cars for 2018, it retails in Ireland from €29,345 plus delivery related charges. Colin Sheridan, Sales and Marketing Director at Gowan Distributors Limited, Peugeot Importers in Ireland said: “The new 5008 SUV has been a huge sales success in Europe since launch. That performance has been replicated in Ireland since initial stock arrived

in late 2017, right through the first six months of this year, during which we’ve gained many conquest customers to the brand; over 80 per cent of 5008 customers are new to us.” He added: “Indeed, together with the continued success of the 2008 SUV and 3008 SUV, our passenger car market share jumped by 53 per cent in June year to date, in a market that has seen a slight decline. “With strong forward orders for the all-important July 182-registration plate, we look forward to the second half of 2018 with confidence.” Housing three matching, separate, folding and tilting seats in the second row and two removable, separate, folding seats in the third row, each seat in the second row features three-point Isofix child seat anchor points. In just one movement, second-row side seats tilt and slide forward to access the third row. The third row seats are easily

removable thanks to a single control. This makes for a huge boot capacity, with up to 1,060 litres in 5-seat configuration. With a choice of five trim levels, to include Access, Active, Allure, GT Line and GT versions, standard features across the range include the revolutionary Peugeot iCockpit interior, multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth, USB and 12V sockets, ESP, six airbags to include curtain airbags along all three rows, child safety locks, semi-automatic air conditioning and cruise control with speed limiter. A wide range of both petrol and diesel engines is available, mated to both manual and automatic transmissions. The PureTech engine was voted International Engine of the Year in its category for the fourth year running in June and now makes up 27 per cent of sales of the 5008. For further information about the new Peugeot 5008 7-seat SUV, see peugeot.ie for details. The new Peugeot 5008 has taken top spot in the large 7-seat SUV segment for the first six months of 2018.

Motoring 25 Fingal County Council launches its fleet of new electric vehicles

NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EAST 11.07.18

FINGAL County Council’s five new electric vehicles were launched by Chief Executive Paul Reid and the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin at Malahide Castle recently. The fleet of fully electric Citroen Berlingo vans to be used by staff are the beginning of Fingal’s transition to electrification. More electric vehicles are set to follow in a commitment to promoting sustainability and tackling climate change. Fully electric vehicles provide a reduction in air pollution and carbon emissions which helps to tackle global warming, while offering whole life cost savings. The electrical vans have benefits across the environmental, financial and operational areas. They require less maintenance and offer the drivers a quieter,

smoother, more enjoyable driving experience. They are very functional and are superior at accelerating and climbing than standard petrol or diesel powered vehicles. At the launch, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said: “Fingal County Council faces huge challenges in tackling climate change and the consequences it has for our environment. “We have been implementing a number of initiatives to help us achieve progress in this area and the five new electric vans are an example of the commitment being made to protecting our environment.” The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin, added: “Fingal’s environment and natural landscape are extremely important to the council, Fingal’s residents and its visitors.

“It is vital that we take steps to protect and preserve them and this initiative is just one example of the efforts being made to do so. “These vehicles are also more cost effective and easier to maintain, allowing us to become more efficient.” With 12 dedicated charging points recently installed across five Fingal offices and depots, each of the vehicles can cover 170 kilometres on a full charge, and take just 30 minutes to completely re-charge. Further developments on this journey towards a better, more greener world currently being worked on are the installation of charging points in Fingal’s street lighting columns and Smart Bench technology. The five electric vans are now operational and being used across the county.

Senior Executive Engineer, Joseph Mandolil, Director of Operations, David Storey, the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin, the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid and Senior Enfineer Karen Gallagher are pictured at the launch of the electric vans at Malahide Castle.

House & Home The finishing touch makes all the difference to your home 26

NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EAST 11.07.18

OK, so you’ve got the hard work done. The walls are painted, the floors are laid and the furniture is in place. It’s nice, but how co me the room still doesn’t feel like the finished article? The secret to transforming a room from ‘nice’ to ‘stylish’ is using the right home décor accessories. It’s just as important as getting the decorating done properly. Accessories ranging from flowers in a contemporary vase to art pictures hanging on your walls all add the finishing touches to any room. Above all, accessories add personality to a room; they inject your

own personal touch, making your home unique to your family and comfortable and inviting for guests. One trick is to make sure your art is in the right place. Not only do art pictures add your own personality to a room, they absorb noise and can actually create the illusion of different shapes if hung in the right places. For example, horizontal landscape pictures help widen a room while portrait floral pictures help give the illusion of height. One large picture reflected through a mirror gives the sensation of additional broader

space. For a maximum effect and to make interesting wall arrangements that can become a dynamic focal point of the room, try to hang smaller pictures in a cluster. If you hang an even number of smaller prints tightly together in a cluster, this will help balance out a large space and give a window effect in a small space. Remember to hang the prints together tightly to create one unit and one focal point. Place larger pictures in proportion to the furniture. For example, hang a large picture approximately six to nine inches above a sofa or at eye level. Hanging a larger print too high above any piece of furniture can leave both pieces feeling disconnected. Before hanging any art on a wall, try different combinations of arrangements. Use painter's tape and brown paper bags and keep rearranging the bits of paper on the wall until you have come up with a great picture arrangement. Always hang prints at eye level and use your hand in between pictures as a guide to space large and medium sized pictures. Mirrors are another great accessory to help create the illusion of space. into the area. To give the illusion of depth in a room, paint one of your walls in a darker contrasting colour to your other walls. Then hang a mirror on that darker wall. This instantly gives the additional sense of depth to the dimensions of the room. Light fittings are one of the most important elements of home decor accessories as they set the ambience of the room. By using different types of lighting you can create different moods on different areas of the room, at different times of the day. For example, accent lighting such as a spotlight can be used to emphasise wall paintings, ornaments or other interesting areas in a room. Soft lighting used by small wall light fittings or table lamps help create a gentle romantic mood. General lighting such as a ceiling centre light, strip light or bright wall lamps can still be used for everyday purposes but you can use a dimmer switch to create different moods. a wonderful accessory in a home. They are easy to blend in with any rooms and you can swap and change the colour, type of flower and position at any time. They are such an easy and adaptable accessory to have. If you are allergic to flowers, try silk flowers instead - sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between real flowers and silk ones so the effect is just the same. Placing plants throughout your home helps add natural colour, texture and also softens the area, making it more appealing to spend time there. Don't forget to use attractive plant pots and containers for your plants - they are a home decor accessory too! Rugs are another vital accessory. Area rugs add warmth and texture to a room. They help soften wooden or hard floors and add contrasting colours and patterns to the room. First you must determine what you want the rug for - is it a focal point or do you want to group furniture on it?

Don’t forget to measure what size rug you need before you go shopping. You can use other textiles to fully accessorise your room. Create additional comfort and softness by using scatter cushions made with different types of material. Or why not use some throws on your sofa or lounge chair? Home décor accessories don’t have to be big and dramatic. Napkins, place mats and tablecloths can add a nice finishing touch

in the dining room or kitchen. Home decor accessories play a crucial part in your home decorating. Even if you don't need to repaint your walls, you can still change the look of your room. By rearranging furniture and wall pictures, adding soft light fixtures, flower arrangements and plants, placing an area rug and using different textiles in a room, you can create a new look to reflect your family’s personality.

House & Home Shaping up your garden shed 28

NORTHSIDE PEOPLE EAST 11.07.18

YOU’VE probably already ventured into the garden shed this summer and no doubt you stumbled over boxes, garden furniture and half-empty paint tins. For the best part of the year, garden sheds are sadly neglected, visited only to cram in some more junk or root-out some half-forgotten item that you just know you is stored somewhere. However, there’s no avoiding the shed in summer. After all, the lawnmower and kiddies’ paddling pool are in there somewhere. So now that you’ve experienced the mess,

why not use one of those long summer evenings or warm weekends to transform your shed into a tidy storage area or even a peaceful retreat from the home. Most sheds have been designed to be used simply as storage space and as such lack imagination when it comes to looks. But there's absolutely no reason why sheds should remain ‘woodlike’ for their entire lives and a lick of paint in a vibrant colour can add a splash of drama to an otherwise uninteresting and uninspiring patch at the bottom of your garden.

people use their sheds as a place to store garden tools, lawnmowers, nails, screws, wellies, garden furniture, wheelbarrows plant pots, compost, seeds, bird food, paintbrushes and so on. Many also need space for actually potting, storing and giving seedlings a bit of TLC as they grow. With this in mind, making the very most of the small space at your disposal is essential. Imposing some law and order on the disorganised chaos will make your shed much more A shed can transform the look of your garden with a bit of work and imagination. functional and useful. everything has a home and can be put straight back after use, rather than simply dumped on a messy pile. Buy or make a table to work on and store things under, remembering to treat it with the appropriate wood protector to make it last a long time. You could also paint or stain it in keeping with your colour scheme. If space is at a real premium, why not get a collapsible design that can easily be packed away? With a shed that's better than any of the rooms in the house, all that remains is for you to make a brew or crack open a bottle of wine, kick off your wellies, switch on the radio and settle down with a good book to the sound of the birds twittering in the trees.

Four local start-ups soaring to new heights FOUR rising Irish start-ups have been announced as the winners of Aer Lingus’ inaugural TakeOff Foundation Start-Up Awards. WeBringg, Hope Beer, MIAS Pharma, Buster Box won the awards, launched by Aer Lingus in partnership with the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Fingal and Fingal Dublin Chamber, to celebrate and assist upand-coming businesses based in the Fingal area on their journey to success. Aer Lingus is providing the four winning businesses with the opportunity to expand their outreach to international markets for business purposes through business mentoring and assistance with travel needs and business profiling opportunities. The prize package received by the winning start-ups will include complimentary

European and long-haul international flights, mentoring from key staff across various Aer Lingus business divisions, and exposure within the airline’s in-flight magazine Cara. Speaking about award winners, Ruth Ranson, Aer Lingus Director of Communications, said: “Supporting start-up businesses in Ireland is a core pillar of the Aer Lingus TakeOff Foundation and I am delighted to announce the winners of our first Take0ff Foundation StartUp Awards. Launching a new business venture demands a huge amount of determination and commitment from entrepreneurs, with the first few years often proving particularly challenging. “We established the TakeOff Foundation Start-Up Awards to help business owners during this early stage of their business journey to help

BANNED BOOKS

Until 1967, international as well as homegrown authors had to contend with Ireland's restrictive book censorship policies. In 1967, the Censorship of Publications Act officially put an end to book banning forever after changing the direction of history and intellectualism in this country. See what book banning - and its abolition meant for an emerging nation at Banned Books - Censorship in Ireland, 1929-1967, a fascinating exhibition running until July 29 at dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire that looks at what is gained - and lost - when a national ideology is taken too far.

MAGAZINE FORT TOURS

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. Guided tours run every Sunday at 10am, 12midday and 2pm. Only 20 places are available on each tour and tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and cannot be prebooked.

PUNT TO BE STAGED AT THE NEW THEATRE

The New Theatre at 43 Essex Street, Temple Bar, will stage the play ‘Punt’ (by Tara Doolan and Pius McGrath) until July 14 at 7.30pm. Tickets €16/€13 (conc.) and booking is at www.thenewtheatre.com or 01-6703361.

THE GRUFFALO'S CHILD

‘Outside the Urban’, an exhibition of paintings by Michelle Boyle has opened at the axis, Main Street, Ballymun. The exhibition reflects the artist’s own sense of person and place which are a constant theme of her artistic output. It runs throughout July and August, Monday to Friday, 8am to

The brilliant family show, ‘The Gruffalo's Child’s, comes to the Pavilion from Wednesday, July 11 to Sunday, July 15. Coming directly from the West End, ‘The Gruffalo's Child’ means songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged three and up and their grown-ups. The Gruffalo said that no gruffalo should ever set foot in the deep dark wood. One wild and windy night ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ ignores her father’s warnings and tiptoes out into the snow After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn't really exist...or does he? Join the Gruffalo’s Child on her adventurous mission in Tall Stories’ magical, musical adaptation of the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
