Minister allays any Free Travel Scheme concerns Pat O’Rourke

M

INISTER for Social Protection Leo Varadkar is fully committed to maintaining the Free Travel Scheme and there are “no plans to make any changes”. Charlie Haughey, when he was Minister of Finance, introduced the scheme in 1967. Last week, Dublin Bay

North TD Sean Haughey (FF) marked the 50th anniversary of his late father's introduction of the scheme, when he met people in his constituency who continue to avail of its benefits. However, during the meeting, Deputy Haughey sounded a note of caution in relation to the scheme’s future amid concerns of possible changes that could adversely affect its users.  CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

The event, being promoted by fruit importers Fyffes, with support from Just-Eat, the online takeaway meals service, aims to raise funds for the purchase of new multisensory equipment at Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Dubliners living within the reach of the Just-Eat service can make their contribution by ordering from a quirky, three-course banana-infused menu created by food-innovation chef Kevin Powell. People living outside the city can make a €4 donation by texting the word BANANA to 50300.

Fine Gael TD denies Rush is neglected by Government Tony McCullagh A FINE Gael TD has rejected suggestions that the north county Dublin village of Rush is being “continually neglected” by the Government. In a statement, Dublin Fingal TD Darragh O’Brien (FF) claimed there was a

lack of progress on a number of key projects promised for the area. “It may appear as though increased commitments are being made to Dublin projects but the reality is that there has been no progress achieved beyond the PR announcements and spin,” Deputy O’Brien said. “A perfect example of this is the promise of a new school building for Gaelscoil Ros Eo. A commitment has been made to this project on four different occasions, yet we are no closer to its construction. “Furthermore, plans for new school builds at St Joseph’s Secondary School

and Rush National School appear to have been put on the backburner by this Government.” Mr O’Brien also slammed the “unjust” closure of the local Garda station in 2012, which he believes has left the people of Rush “dangerously exposed”. He added: “While we continue to deal with a poor transport network across Fingal and the failure to deliver Metro North, there has been a major deterioration in the maintenance of roads throughout the area, including the road to the local GAA club. “The closure of the only bank in the town has made it difficult for older people, especially those who rely heavily on community banking and may not have access to online banking. The post office lies at the heart of many communities, yet this too may be under threat.” However, local Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell, hit back at Darragh O’Brien’s com-

In relation to the Gaelscoil in Rush and the new building for St Joseph’s Secondary School, Deputy Farrell said officials are liaising with Fingal County Council regarding an educationally-zoned site in the area. “Once technical issues surrounding the required infrastructure are wholly

pilot basis which will allow for their impact on criminal activity to be determined. I certainly hope that Rush Garda station will be considered in future.” Mr Farrell also pointed out that the Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, recently renewed his department's contract with An Post to provide pension, child benefit and other social welfare payments through post offices. "We have also re-affirmed this Government’s commitment to ensure all new claimants for social welfare payments will be advised of the option to receive cash payments at our local post

offices," he stated. Deputy Farrell said it was disingenuous for Darragh O’Brien to suggest that the Government was not actively working on the delivery of Metro North. “Deputy O’Brien should be aware, as was outlined when the project was announced, that the planning and design stages, as well as the Railway Procurement Order, must be progressed before construction can begin,” he added. “The fact is that this project is progressing, with construction scheduled to begin in 2021 and Metro North to be operational by 2026/27.”

assessed, the site acquisition process will begin,” he said. Deputy Farrell added: “With regard to Rush Garda station, the fact is that Fianna Fáil in Government closed the Garda Training College in Templemore in 2009 and left our economy in such a state that it was not feasible to re-open it or provide An Garda Síochána with the level of personnel to retain all Garda stations. Unfortunately, this resulted in the closure of Rush Garda station in 2012. “In the coming months, the Garda Commissioner will recommend the re-opening of six Garda stations on a

Raheny man recognised for music business contribution A NORTHSIDE man has been recognised for his extensive contribution to the music business. Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) chief executive Victor Finn and Keith Donald, chairman of IMRO’s board of directors, presented the Midem Gold Pioneer Medal award to Irish music publisher Michael O’Riordan, from Raheny. Mr O’Riordan, the only Irish person to receive the award, was a major player in the success of Release Records in the late 1960s, when the Irish music scene was mainly dominated by that label and its unrivalled catalogue of showbands, ballad singers and cabaret acts. Since the advent of Ritz Records he has been an unrelenting campaigner for more use of all types of Irish music on radio and television. More recently he has con-

We should only pay for what we watch online

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

H

OW does television remain viable in a digital age? That’s the question exercising political minds as an Oireachtas committee gets set to grapple with the concept of the TV licence being extended to users of laptops, tablets and other devices. The problem is, the national broadcaster is no longer the only show in town and the media landscape has changed radically since the days of ‘Wanderly Wagon’ and ‘Quicksilver’. RTÉ’s independent rivals such as TV3

have long bemoaned the fact that the licence fee goes exclusively to Montrose and they have to compete on what they see as an unlevel playing pitch for a slice of the advertising revenue pie – much of which has migrated online. This has also become a bugbear for newspapers and radio stations who had to invest heavily in online output while going head to head with RTÉ’s digital platforms. It all comes down to how much we value the idea of public service broadcasting. RTÉ’s director general, Dee Forbes, recently argued that the licence fee should be doubled, pointing out that it currently equates to just over 40 cent per day. Not only does this go towards funding two television channels, we also get four radio stations, an orchestra and a range of digital services. It certainly sounds like value for money and RTÉ is hard to equal when it comes to quality news and current affairs programming. Personally, I am willing to pay for good journalism, be it through the purchase of a newspaper or as part of my television licence fee. I am less happy to be funding country and western specials on ‘The Late Late Show’ or subsidising the inflated salaries enjoyed by some of RTÉ’s biggest stars. As things stand, if you don’t want

▪▪ ‘The Late Late Show’ country music special was a huge hit with viewers but would you pay to watch it online? to pay your TV licence, you have two options: you refuse to buy one and run the risk of being hauled before a judge and fined or jailed (for a few hours anyway). Alternatively, you simply choose not to own a television. However, under new proposals being considered, you would no longer be able to circumvent paying the licence fee by just watching ‘Home and Away’ on your

laptop or tablet. There is something manifestly unfair about this if you don’t own a television and restrict your online viewing to Netflix or YouTube. Why should you pay for something you don’t watch? Perhaps the most obvious solution is for RTÉ to introduce a subscription charge for its digital services. If you wanted to watch the RTÉ Player on a computer, you’d

have to pay for the privilege – ditto its news and entertainment sites. Those who already hold a television licence could be exempt from the online subscription charge. The Government should also look at ways of improving compliance rates by bringing licence fee evaders to heel in a more efficient and cost-effective manner than dragging them through the courts.

Sutton man wins Sexton’s jersey A NORTHSIDE man was delighted to meet Johnny Sexton recently after winning a prize on Sunshine FM. The Irish and Leinster rugby star donated his match jersey from the 2016 Six Nations clash with Scotland, in which he kicked 15 points to win the game, to Cycle Ataxia. Barry Rice, from Ayrfield, set up the charity to raise funds for Friedreich’s Ataxia research and patient care. Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a neuromuscular disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system resulting in the loss of muscle control. Billy Murray, a lifetime Leinster Rugby fan, won the jersey. The jersey was unsigned but Sexton kindly agreed to meet Mr Murray at the Sunshine FM studios in the Point

Cycle Against Suicide 2017 is to start off from Swords Hayley Halpin OVER 600 cyclists will set off from North Street, Swords, on April 23 and travel across the country on behalf of this year’s Cycle Against Suicide event. Now running for five years, Cycle Against Suicide is a signpost mental health organisation set up by Jim Breen and Colm Hayes, formerly of 2FM. “Back in 2012, Jim Breen approached me. I was presenting a talk show on 2FM at that stage and he had a huge concern about the level of suicide in Ireland and about the mental health and the mental wellbeing of young people,” Hayes said. “He came up with this idea to have a cycle. We would have this two-week cycle that would go across Ireland, promoting our message, raising awareness.” Once a year, the cyclists travel from Dublin, up to Northern Ireland, across to the West and back across to the capital to raise awareness for mental health. The event is particularly aimed at schools, with events, projects, performances and motivational speakers visiting 28 schools along the cycle route. In preparation for the event, Cycle Against Suicide is set to host a Mental

Health & Wellbeing Fair in Swords on Saturday, April 22. Mental health organisations will have a presence around the area and registration will take place at Fingal County Council’s headquarters. Following this, the cycle will set off on the Sunday morning at 10.30am. “We’re hoping just before that we’ll have an event where we’ll have the high hopes choirs, a number of speakers, a number of celebrities and then off we head from Swords to Drogheda, Dundalk and then after that to Belfast,” Hayes said. Hayes said he decided to get involved with the project when Mr Breen approached him because he had dealt with many mental health stories during his time on 2FM. “I had spoken to a huge number of people on the talk show to do with mental health and mental wellbeing so it was also something I wanted to promote as much as I could,” he said. “I think we do an appalling job of it in Ireland. We’re afraid to talk about it, we hide in the corner and the Government doesn't help either by underfunding mental health in such a terrible way. It’s something we really need to become more vocal about.”

▪▪ Pictured (from l-r) are Jim Breen, founder of Cycle Against Suicide; Brent Pope, rugby pundit; Charlene McKenna, actress; Colm Hayes, interim chief executive of Cycle Against Suicide; and Oisin McConville, former Armagh GAA star. Cycle Against Suicide supports organisations including Samaritans, Tusla, ISPCC, Teenline Ireland, Tearnaige Suicide Bereavement Support and the North Dublin Drug & Alcohol Task. Hayes noted that there are many levels as to why the

local community should get involved in the cycle. “It can be quite cathartic for people whereby they have been affected by bad mental health or maybe suicide in their family or (among) friends, and it helps them because they believe they’re

doing something that’s important,” he added. “Everyone realises this is very important for the mental wellbeing of Ireland but at the very time the money isn’t pushed through properly to the mental health services.”

Rugby club unveils the Clontarf Bulls CLONTARF Rugby Club has set up a new team this season, especially for local children, aged 6-14, with intellectual additional needs. New players are continually joining Clontarf Bulls as the good news spreads across the community. Many of the children involved have challenges such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, visual or hearing impairments, or other learning needs. Having seen their brothers and sisters play rugby, these boys and girls can now line out on a team of their own. Clontarf Bulls is being led by a group of rugby coaches and volunteers with a particular interest in promoting the abilities of these children and rightfully including them in Clontarf Rugby. The coaching group draws on active players, ex-players, teachers, SNAs, and academics in the fields of people with special needs. Sunday mornings on the new all-weath-

Each participant is provided with one-to-one coaching throughout the session. It is a positive, fun and safe environment, whereby the children are given maximum encouragement, with parents looking on. Improvements have been noticed in

the players as the weeks go on including increased confidence, independence, spatial awareness, ball handling skills, fine and gross motor skills, listening skills, ability to take instruction, fitness, increased fun in the fresh air, friendships between children and also parents, and of course an appreciation of the game of rugby. Bake Off raises dough for Temple Street STAFF and students of Pobalscoil Neasáin, Baldoyle, are being congratulated for their recent fundraising efforts for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. On April 7, the Northside school’s Student Council held their first ‘PSN Bake Off’. The Great Irish Bake 2017 was a nationwide fundraiser to raise much needed ‘dough’ for Temple Street. The Student Council, along with their teachers Ms O’Mahony, Ms O’ Hanrahan, Ms O’Reilly and Mr Howley, spent weeks preparing and promoting the competition for this worthy charity. This was the first year Pobalscoil Neasáin entered the

competition which began in 2009. The staff and students embraced the opportunity to get involved as most people have had some experience with Temple Street. Indeed, it was an event that was supported by the wider school community with the Parents’ Association and many family members in attendance on the day. It was a day enjoyed by all involved and it was great to see so many teenagers and staff make such a huge effort in the competition. Check out the school Twitter @PSNeasain to see more photos. Dublin,” she said. “Many tell me that it is the equivalent to a second mortgage or rent. We are now taking steps to ensure the maximum number of families will see that burden eased from September.” The Government has also

agreed that a major information campaign will be launched next month so everyone is aware of their entitlements. “I am asking that every effort is made to ensure the campaign will reach every family in Dublin,” added Minister Zappone.

A highly desirable area in the heart of our capital city LOCATION, location, location! Over the years, this is a phrase that has tripped off the tongues of house buyers, estate agents and TV presenters of property shows among others. It is a phrase widely used by property experts to show that the three most important factors in determining the desirability of a property are indeed

‘location, location, location’. It’s a phrase that could sit easily too with Fairview, a suburb that’s ideally located close to the city centre, and a very desirable place in which to live. Local residents are indeed very fortunate with their location. While Dublin city centre is only ▪▪ Continued on page 24

Keep business local during these still challenging times THE latest recession will certainly go down as one of the most turbulent periods in our history given our economic woes and the situation we found ourselves in after years of living it up while the so-called Celtic Tiger apparently strutted across our communities. It’s hard to believe some of us weren’t happy with one property in those days. We couldn’t wait to splash the cash on second homes in foreign climes that you’d normally only see in holiday brochures in the window of your local travel agent. And speaking of holidays, we weren’t content with getting out of wet and dreary Ireland once or twice a year and people didn’t bat an eyelid when you checked in at the airport four times a year and more. However, in the midst of those ‘heady’ days when we were spending money we

didn’t have, who could have predicted the crisis that cast doom and gloom over every town and village in the country? The tiger, of course, is but a distant dream and has been replaced by the wolf that we’re still battling to keep from the door. There have been encouraging signs of late, however, that the economy is turning for the better – the monthon-month drop in unemployment figures being one of the strong indicators. The house price crash post 2007 was also a nightmare which plunged many of us into negative equity and had us pleading with our bank managers to show a bit of compassion in the face of adversity. House prices are rising again, though, which is another indicator that the economy is finally moving forward. However, despite these

green shoots, caution must be exercised, and with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, who knows with certainty what’s ahead of us? The upshot is that local business communities especially are still in need of our support. Indeed there has never been a more important time to back our local traders and play our part in keeping employment levels up in our areas. Fairview is one of those areas that has always strived to offer its citizens quality local services.   It has always been renowned as a close-knit community providing shops, schools, sports clubs and recreational outlets. The area has grown along with the population explosion and this growth has been more than matched by local businesses that have stepped up to the mark. There is a lot of things you

Hoolahan is arguably the most gifted player in the Irish squad and was the darling of the Irish fans last summer when he scored that stunning goal against Sweden in our opening game in the European Championships in France. Back in the ‘90s, Hoolahan honed his skills in Fairview with Belvedere FC which reflects very well on the club’s coaching staff. Former Belvedere players also include Curtis Fleming who went on to enjoy a distinguished career as a right back with

St Patrick’s Athletic, Middlesboro and the Republic of Ireland; Stephen Elliott and Stephen Kelly; Mark Kennedy, who once reached the dizzy heights of Liverpool FC; and Thomas Butler who was selected for his country while playing for Sunderland. Former Millwall player Richard Sadlier, who is now a regular soccer pundit with RTE, also plied his trade in the Blue and Black of ‘Belvo’ once upon a time. Keith Crawford was a prolific scorer for Belvedere in the early to mid 1990s and secured a transfer to Tranmere Rovers FC in 1994.

Keith also played junior football for Ireland, winning a number of caps and also scorings goals in the green shirt. Such is the esteem in which Belvedere FC is held that it’s not only local boys who turn out for the club. Youngsters from other parts of the country have also been known to travel up to Dublin to play for one of the most successful schoolboy clubs in the country. ▪▪ ABOVE: Fairview Park is a fantastic amenity for locals for sport and recreation. edly the jewel in this area’s crown and has been a home for footballers, Gaelic players, walkers, joggers and a number of other uses for many years. There was major disruption in the park in the early noughties owing to the construction of the Dublin Port Tunnel. However, the park has long since been returned to its former glory and has never looked better. The main commercial areas are a thriving, busy road that runs opposite Fairview Park and Fairview Strand, a narrower commercial and residential strip. Marino Mart is another busy area that gets a lot of passing trade. Landmarks include St Joseph’s CBS, a secondary school for boys that was established way back in 1888. The popular school also boasts a number of very famous past pupils, including former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey. Marino College of Further Education is another excellent education provider in the area as is St Mary’s National School, located on Windsor Avenue. St Vincent's Hospital, another major landmark, was founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1857 and is located on Richmond Road, close to Fairview. Dublin's first 50-metre swimming pool, at the West Wood Club, was built on a former waste depot adjacent to Fairview Park and is a great amenity to have in the area. Ireland’s largest sporting stadium Croke Park is also nearby, while restaurants, cafes and pubs regularly attract trade from big events at the stadium.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic complaint causing widespread pain and sensitivity to muscles and soft tissues. The initial stages of the disease often go unnoticed, as the patient may only suffer from minimal fatigue, soreness, gastrointestinal complaints or insomnia. As the disease progresses, the symptoms become more severe and widespread, effecting sleep, digestion, bowel movements, joint stiffness and more. This occurs because the nervous system is in a state of constant irritation. Irritation to the nervous system can be caused by old injuries or traumas, stress, drug use or abuse, environmental factors or anything that overloads the bodies defences. The Classical Osteopathic approach to fibromyalgia begins with treating the old injuries in a manor which works in harmony with the body therefore taking stress off the nervous system. The more irritation that can be removed from the body, the more the nervous system can normalise. This in turn allows the body to begin to heal itself. Blood flow and drainage are improved increasing oxygen levels and ridding the system of toxins. In the treatment of fibromyalgia, relaxation and Craniosacral techniques may be used, tailored to the individual needs of the patient. This means the treatment is gentle and relaxing. As Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease treatment is ongoing and may require the intervention of other health care professionals.

dance at the event were nominated to join the forum by their local education groups, and included representatives from apprenticeships, community education, the Youthreach programme and the Back to Education Initiative. Commenting at the event, Niamh O’Reilly, CEO of AONTAS, said the national forum gave learners an opportunity to share their views at national level and to help influence policy. “It is vital that learners are given a platform to talk about their own personal experiences,” she said. “They must be consulted regularly about the type of education and training they need, as well as the supports they require to complete the courses on offer.” The meeting was officially opened by Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, who thanked the learners for their “valuable participation”. “The benefits of partici-

pating in further education and training are not simply limited to labour market outcomes,” the minister said. As well as offering opportunities to upskill and reskill, participation has many positive benefits on health and well – being and provides great opportunities to meet new people, to engage in our local communities and overall to participate in wider society more generally. “The sector has undergone major reform over the last number of years, with the aim of developing a world-class system of further education and training to meet the needs of learners, communities and employers and all who engage with FET. “The action plan for education includes a number of key actions to support that vision and see it firmly established as the fourth pillar of the Irish education system.”

Omni Centre, Santry: 01 8429401 Available in three different designs, each K9 Connectable dog toy offers a new and exciting experience for your dog.

Equipet are delighted to announce the arrival of K9 Connectables, the hottest new dog toys on the market, both in-store and online. The K9 Connectables range is fully interchangeable and are designed to stimulate your dog’s mind which in turn will reduce boredom which will discourage destructive behaviour! K9 Connectables are the brain child of Irish couple, James and Lauren McIlvenna who after their gorgeous (but extremely energetic!) Labrador Sandy shredded their wedding album. These innovative, interactive dog toys are designed to engage, stimulate and keep your dog entertained. All of the K9 range are interchangeable and connect together which allows you to offer a new challenge to your dog every time.

“ “

The idea with the K9 Connectables series of toys is that you stuff the dog’s favourite food and treats inside and connect them together,” said James.

The dog can smell the food but has to break the connections apart to get at it. And the connections are designed with a three-ring system which can gradually make the task even harder for your pet – for example, it takes Sandy 45 minutes of constant play to get her reward of peanut butter inside the toys.”

James and Lauren wanted to create a dog toy that stimulates and

mentally engages the dog and to do this they worked closely with dog behavioural experts, veterinary professionals and a dedicated team of dog owners. “We 3D printed over 50 prototypes before we were finally happy with a design that is soft, chewable, interconnectable and has the erratic shapes which dogs like.”

The Original K9 Connectable is a bouncy ball, that connects together to hide delicious treats. Designed with two connection levels of difficulty The Original will occupy your dog’s mind and keep him busy for hours. The multi-function dog toy will also fit into a standard tennis ball launcher and is designed to float on water making it an ideal toy for games of fetch in the park or on the beach. The Tech Bone is an ideal alternative to sticks when playing fetch without worrying about any damage to your dog’s teeth or mouth. The shape of the Tech Bone allows you to create lots of fun inventions using other products from the K9 Connectables range. Use the bone shaped hole for paste based treats (like peanut butter or wet dog food) for additional enjoyment. The Dentist features small grooves along the outside of the toy which promotes good dental health as this texture will clean teeth and remove plaque. The Dentist features three connection levels of difficulty so is more complex for your dog to break and will provide endless hours of entertainment when used with the full K9 Connectables range. MOTORING

REACHING ???,000 READERS WEEKLY ACROSS DUBLIN

Have a safer motoring holiday this summer WITH summertime fast approaching motorists travelling abroad have been advised to take precautions to avoid sudden breakdowns. While in the car, one is flexible, not bound by strict baggage limits and remains mobile once at the destination, the joy of the holiday can quickly dissipate with an unforeseen problem. To spare such an unpleasant situation, a vehicle and tyre check is recommended

in good time before the trip. “Incorrect tyre pressure is the most common cause of punctures,” Thierry Delesalle from Eiretyres.com stated. “This can cause tyres to burst under the loaded or even overloaded vehicle. “Motorists should therefore definitely check and adjust their tyre pressure in accordance with the load. “Normally, air pressure should be checked when the tyres are cold. The reference values specified for this purpose by the manufacturer

can be found in the vehicles operating instructions.” Mr Delesalle added: “Also, check the condition of your tyres before departure. Look for damage such as cracks or bulging. And, most importantly, don’t forget to measure the tread depth.” In Europe, a minimum legally required tread depth of summer tyres is 1.6mm. To ensure maximum safety, according to the German Automobile Club ADAC, summer tyres should be replaced with fresh ones when the tread depth reaches 3mm. This applies also to the spare wheel. “The age of the tyres also plays a role,” Delesalle states. “Even if not used, traction may be reduced dramatically despite an adequate tread depth.

▪▪ Summer drivng can be fun but check tyres before you head off. “That can be the case, for example, with caravans and other trailers, which are not moved much throughout the year. “Speaking of caravans, when tyres are exposed to strong sunlight at a campsite, UV radiation can also be detrimental to them. Here, it is also wise to cast a second or even third eye over the tyres. “Careful tyre management pays for itself with greater safety. Worn or damaged tyres can lead to dangerous situations. Even with a positive end, when it comes to a breakdown the frustration is big - punctured tyres cost time, money and get on the nerves. “To prevent such breakdowns, we recommend purchasing new tyres when de-

Additionally, customers can choose a convenient option of sending the tyres directly to one of more than 300 partner workshops in Ireland at no extra cost. Soon, Eiretyres.com is going to offer an extra service - mobile fitting. A fully equipped workshop will come to the customer’s desired location and fit the tyres directly on-site. This service is already available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and will gradually be expanded to other countries. The season of ice and snow is a thing of the past and suddenly, summer is knocking on the door. It’s time to prepare your car for the warmer months

of the year. Above all, this means swapping your winter tyres for summer ones. But are your summer tyres up to the job of dealing with rising temperatures? The experts from Eiretyres.com recommend a thorough quality check. TREAD DEPTH Many countries stipulate a minimum tread depth allowed by law: while the minimum in Europe is 1.6 mm, experts recommend an ideal summer tyre tread depth of up to 3mm. It is important to check the tread depth at the edges of the tyre too, and not just in the middle. If the tread depth is too shallow, or if the tyres are showing uneven wear, you should change them. TYRE CONDITION Tyres have to be able to withstand a lot. For this reason you should always check your tyres for cracks, bulges, and porous patches before fitting them to your car. If you see any damage on the tyres, they don’t belong on a car. The age of the

tyre is also important: tyres last for a maximum of eight years before their grip decreases significantly, even if they have low mileage. TYRE PRESSURE If you think about the fact that each tyre has to carry a quarter of your car’s weight, it becomes clear how important the correct air pressure is. If the tyre’s air pressure is too low, this will affect driving stability. Not only does this increase fuel consumption, it is also an extreme safety risk. You can find the right tyre pressures for your car in the operating instructions, and in many vehicles they are also often displayed on the fuel tank cover or on the door frame. If the tyre check shows that you need new tyres, you can buy them simply and conveniently at Eiretyres. com. The online shop’s wide range of products offers the perfect solution for every type of car and driving profile.

ANOTHER week, another car that has got a mid-life makeover. But seeing as a lot of us humans opt for serious mid-life facial makeovers, why shouldn’t car manufacturers do the same? Last week it was the classy looking Mazda 6, which came in a gorgeous soul red colour. Traditionally cars owners have given their cars female names and while I knew that my ‘lady in red’ had some ‘work done’ it was difficult to spot exactly where. Externally the main difference seems to be the new door mirrors. They now fold electrically and have a more aerodynamic shape that helps to reduce wind noise. They also have amber warning signs to let you know if you are being overtaken. And the mirrors fold in when you apply the central locking. You also get LED lights which add to the overall look of the car. Inside it reminded me a lot of the smaller Mazda 3 I drove a few weeks back. Again there is a brilliant head up display directly in

your line of sight on the dash which tells you the speed limit is on the road you are on and the speed you are doing. And if for some reason you might take your hands of the steering wheel for a second or two, you will get a warning to put them back on! Like the Mazda 3 the cabin in the 6 is brightened by the cream seats; maybe the seats would be difficult to keep clean, but the interior was so bright and cheerful, compared to so many other cars where black is the dominant interior colour. There is a new style steering wheel with three-gauge instrument cluster, now in colour. And like the 3 the revamped 6 now has as G-Vectoring Control (GVC), which is designed to provide more precise handling and improved comfort. GVC means the software in the engine management system takes inputs from the steering wheel angle and vehicle speed to reduce engine torque and improve cornering performance. Very technical I know and you

might not notice it in your daily driving. But I’m told GVC makes for smoother driving and could reduce travel sickness if that’s a problem for children or adults. You get an electronic handbrake, but it has to be released before you drive off. There is a decent size

boot, but no spare wheel, only the dreaded repair kit. Car companies are dispensing with spare wheels to reduce the weight of their cars, but there is ‘well space’ for a spare, so the motto here is to haggle with the garage owner for a spare if purchasing a

new car. The Mazda 6 is, I think, one of the best-looking saloons on sale in Ireland right now with its flowing lines and distinctive front-end styling. And the 19-inch alloys don’t do any harm to what is an overall classy look. No complaints from me

and I found it very comfortable to travel in. While my daughter loved the bright seats, she thought the seating position was a bit low. Prices start at €29,295, while my 2.2-litre diesel automatic test car, with a litany of extras brought the price up €41,545.

Fabulous fabric for a fresh look F ABRIC is one of the most versatile elements in any home and it’s also one of the easiest things to change each season to create a whole new mood.

So when the sun begins to shine and the trees come into bud, decorating with nature-inspired colours, patterns and materials suddenly seems quite tempting.

Leading interior design house Neptune has tapped into these instincts and come up with some tips on how summer fabrics can give your home a fresh new look.

▪▪ Neptune’s Olivia sofa in Emma Sage from €3,140, Madeleine chair in Isla Mallard €520, George sofa in Isla Mallard from €2,280, Carter nest of tables €860, Edinburgh round mirror in vintage oak from €470.

▪▪ Brighten up a bedroom with a patterned headboard. Neptune’s Chichester double bed base hand-painted in shell €680, Eva headboard in Jack Sage €580, Madeleine chair in jack mustard €570, Henley side table €425, Delyth rug €105, Skye throw €200, Laura and Delilah cushions in Lara Sage and Emma Sage from €74.

Combining different fabrics is key to creating a room with warmth and spirit, according to Neptune. They recommend being brave and pairing linen with velvet, florals with stripes and patterns with plains. And just a few meters of fabric, combined with a little inspiration, can work wonders when it comes to bringing a little summer freshness to a room. As the largest pieces in a room sofas, armchairs and beds inevitably make a big impact. So it is important to choose upholstery fabric that you really love and that coordinates with your other soft furnishings. Think about transforming a tired dining chair with a new slip cover, or treating

To brighten up a bedroom why not try a patterned headboard? It's an original way to add decoration and you can style it up or down with your choice of bedding. In the living room, teaming a plain velvet sofa with a pair of printed linen armchairs is a contrast that works beautifully. If you are fortunate

enough to have a wide window ledge in any of your rooms, it's a gift not to be overlooked. Eco habits of Irish homes revealed ONLY one in three Irish people are willing to cut their shower time to save water, according to research into our eco-habits released earlier this month by IKEA. The survey found that while three quarters of adults want to live more sustainably, almost four in 10 (38 per cent) are unsure of where to begin. Saving money on electricity and food waste (77 per cent) were the biggest reasons for people wanting to live sustainably and IKEA says that living in a sustainable way involves small, simple steps. Simply changing an incandescent bulb to an LED bulb saves up to 85 per cent on energy usage and lasts 20 times longer. To tackle their electricity usage, two thirds of adults (66 per cent) turn the lights off when leaving the room, while three quarters of people (75 per cent) are already using energy saving light bulbs.

IKEA Regional Sustainability Change Leader Gráinne Breen said: “With over 2.9 million people visiting us in Ireland each year, we have a big opportunity to help many people to live a more sustainable life at home. “We aim to provide solutions which help our customers save money by saving and generating their own energy, using less water, reducing waste and living healthier lives.” Overall, Irish people are conscious about conserving water with 76 per cent only running the washing machine on a full load. However, when it comes to showers, Irish people will not compromise on enjoying their shower time. Just three in 10 (28 per cent) said they always have shorter showers to reduce their water usage; while just one in five (19 per cent) would use a timer to reduce their water consumption. In the kitchen, Irish people are savvy in how they reduce their food waste. The vast majority of adults (88 per

cent) always separate their waste for recycling, while almost half (45 per cent) try to use leftover food in other meals. Despite these results, over one million tonnes of food waste is disposed of every year, with a third of this waste coming from households. This accounts for 80kg of food waste each year. “Recycling and sustainability are part of our roots in IKEA,” Breen added. “We are one of the few organisations to make money off the waste we produce. glass and foil is recycled. “We are applying sustainability not just to our own business practices, but in the products and ranges available to Irish customers in our stores.” IKEA published its Sustainability Strategy for 2020 in 2012. One of the key objectives for the company is to become more energy independent. As it stands in Ireland, IKEA has developed wind farms which generate more energy than is consumed by the store in Ballymun Dublin and its order & collection point in Carrickmines.

EMPLOYMENT/BUSINESS Dublin Port Our transport records infrastructure first quarter growth urgently needs FOR ALL DUBLIN READERSHIP

more investment Cormac Spencer WORKING in recruitment, I know that one of the major stumbling blocks to finding a suitable candidate for a job is their proximity to the role. Find me someone who is willing to commute from Skerries to Sandyford and I will find you someone with an overzealous penchant for drive time radio! Candidates rightly don’t want to have to undertake a two or three-hour round trip to get to work each day, not to mention shell out the funds necessary to do so. Such punishing commutes turn people off applying for jobs which can benefit their lives, thus putting them at a disadvantage as well as hindering companies seeking the right people to help their business succeed. It’s only when we are without public transport that we see how important it is. The strike at Bus Eireann, Dublin Bus and the one carried out last year by LUAS drivers caused serious disruption for people and businesses alike. I don’t seek to take a side on the issues, but the lack of services is an eye opener as to how the economy can creak without a good way to get people and goods from A to B. We have seen some investment in public transport recently. The Phoenix Park tunnel has opened to traffic and the Luas extension is getting closer. However, these projects only scrape the surface in terms of the investment we need. Our economic recovery is well under way, and the more we grow the more we outgrow our infrastructure.

International companies locating in Ireland often cite our educated population as one of the main motivating factors for setting up here, but that advantage is null and void if these talented people can’t or won’t travel to join the business. This is a massive issue when we consider the possibility of companies relocating from post-Brexit Britain. Businesses want to move to places where they can attract employees, and where their staff have a decent standard of living. A city and country which is found wanting in terms of connectivity risks being left behind. This is the very real risk we face today. Rather than invest in infrastructure when times were tough, we decided there wasn’t any money to break ground on these projects. Now our chickens are coming home to roost as boardrooms across the world work out their options for moving from Britain. When you think about it, a top class public transport infrastructure acts as a subsidy to businesses and workers. It makes life easier for everyone and allows the right people to access the jobs they are qualified to do. We may never have a perfect transport system, but as a society we have neglected the economic and social returns that emanate from having top class infrastructure. No one in Dublin should have to commute more than an hour or so to work in any other part of the city or county and companies should have a reasonable expectation that when they

DUBLIN Port Company’s trade statistics for the first quarter of 2017, published last week, show continued strong growth of 4.2 per cent after last year’s record throughput of 34.9 million gross tonnes.

Dublin Port also announced that it will pay a dividend to the State of €11.7 million in 2017, bringing the aggregate dividend payment since 2007 to €101.2 million. The dividend follows a strong financial performance in 2016, during which turnover grew by 5.1 per cent to €81.6 million and

Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) grew by 8.8 per cent to €53.6 million. This strong performance comes after growth of 25 per cent in the four years to 2016, with the high growth trend continuing into the first quarter of 2017. Total throughput for the three months to the end of March was 8.7 million gross tonnes with 1,843 ship arrivals, equivalent to 20 ships each day. Both imports and exports grew strongly with imports ahead by 3.3 per cent and exports even more strongly at 5.5 per cent.

If they don't they will look elsewhere. Investment in public transport is not a luxury, but a necessity for Ireland and is furthermore a hugely productive investment which vastly improves quality of life for commuters, shoppers and citizens in general. We should make sure that in future we don't score an F and do what we can to get people from A to B with an efficient, reliable and green transport system.

The event will see participants of all ages don inflatable sumo suits and run (or walk) a 5km route through the beautiful Marlay Park. Entry fees start from €40 and participants can sign up at www.sumorun. ie (your sumo suit is then yours to keep!) Aspiring sumos of all ages are welcome, and children must be above 1.2 metres in height to participate.
