AN internationally renowned music photographer, who has toured with Canadian band Arcade Fire and snapped artists including Grace Jones, Stephen Fry and Madonna is set to share some of her sought-after work at Ireland’s premier art fair, Art Source, in the RDS this weekend. Marino native Ruth Medjber is living a dream she has had since her dad encouraged her to take up the camera at the age of three. Ruth has just toured Europe with Arcade Fire and has already been booked to shoot Glastonbury 2019 for the

I once did a project for a directory company where I had to photograph the chippers in Dublin. “I didn’t drive at the time so I was bussing it around in the rain for months until I got a job eventually in Hot Press Magazine and then graduated to NME. Fast forward a few years and Ruth’s work has been featured in the likes of Kerrang, Rolling Stone and Classic Rock. Ruth, the official festival photographer for events such as Electric Picnic and Guinness Amplify, has also been able to photograph bands that she adored as a teenager which brings back

memories of sneaking into gigs when she was only 14. “I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a lot of my teenage heroes, like Placebo and the Manic Street Preachers, she says. “When I was 14 or 15, I used to sneak into gigs to see acts like Bell X1 and Lisa Hannigan, so now, when I work for those same acts, I always try to keep in mind how excited my younger self would be if she knew what she’d be up to! Ruth’s new exhibition will open on November 23 and run for two weeks in the Fumbally Exchange on Dame Lane but you are invited to a sneak peek of a select few prints at Art Source which takes place at the RDS from

Ahead of staging her first solo exhibition of ‘Live’ music photography, Ruth will give Art Source fans a sneak preview of concert shots taken of legendary international artists she has photographed. These include Grace Jones, Dua Lipa, Leonard Cohen, Madonna, Green Day, Beyonce, Metallica and The Stone Roses. Ruth has photographed almost all the acts who have toured Ireland in the last 10 years but her career all started thanks to her dad. “I got into the scene like any normal teenager, through a love of music and a desire to be part of it, she says. “Since I couldn’t play an instrument or hum a note, photography was my only way in and had always been part of my life. “My dad used to work selling camera equipment and I’d go with him as he’d visit all the camera shops around Ireland. He started giving me cameras for Christmas as young as three-years-old. It was a few years later however, when she realised her dream job was actually real. “I was 14-years-old at a gig in Temple Bar when I discovered there was such as job as a live music photographer and I then tried every way to achieve my new goal, says Ruth.

Ciara claims top guiding award

Ciara Egan of Howth Guides pictured receiving her National Guide Award pin and certificate from Irish Girl Guides’ President Maureen Murphy (left) and Irish Girl Guides’ Assistant Chief Commissioner, Áine Divilly, at Croke Park.

A TOTAL of 137 Girl Guides, aged 14-15, travelled from all corners of the country to Croke Park recently to receive Irish Girl Guides’ highest award.   Twenty-six of the girls who received the Trail Blazer National Guide Award, were from Dublin, including Guide units in Howth, Dundrum, Ballyroan and Lucan. Each girl received a Trail Blazer gold pin from Irish Girl Guides’ (IGG) President Maureen Murphy and a National Guide Award certificate from IGG Assistant Chief Commissioner Áine Divilly. At the event, which the girls celebrated with their families, the President told them: “You have been committed and worked hard to gain the award and gained valuable life-skills in the process. “Everyone has put her own stamp on the challenges, which is inspiring. Everyone here has the skills to make a positive contribution to her community and society

going forward.” Carina Egan, Chair of IGG Guide Branch, said that without the hard work and commitment of the 137 girls there would be no celebrations. “This award is made in recognition of the successful completion of a series of challenges, including teamwork activities, outdoor survival

skills, community service, global awareness and working with younger members of Irish Girl Guides to help them develop confidence, independence and essential life-skills,” said Ms Egan. “We all know that you have worked to your fullest potential to receive this award and hope you

continue to use many of the life-skills you have achieved wherever life takes you in the future.” Irish Girl Guides welcomes new members from age 5+ and volunteer leaders from age 18+. Previous experience of guiding is not necessary. To find out more information, visit www. irishgirlguides.ie.

MetroLink update deferred

HOPES have been raised that a delay in a MetroLink update due to be announced this month could mean good news for local sports clubs and schools. A consultation process on plans officially began in May after Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TFI) and the National Transport Authority (NTA) publically announced an emerging preferred route last March. However, the plans included a tunnel boring construction site in Glasnevin, which would mean the loss of pitches for GAA club Na Fianna and Home Farm soccer club. Local schools, including Scoil Chaitriona and Scoil Mobhí, also expressed concerns over health and safety implications for pupils and staff. The sports clubs and schools campaigned strongly against the emerging preferred route, encouraging thousands to engage with the consultation process and oppose the tunnel-boring

site. Last week transport officials admitted there had been a “high level” of interest from the public to the proposed 26km high frequency metro from Swords to Sandyford. The volume of submissions means that an update to the plans expected this month has now been put back to early 2019. “The MetroLink engineering designers are carefully considering all the issues raised and as a result are reviewing the Emerging Preferred Route to take into account those concerns and suggestions made as appropriate,” a spokesperson said. “It was hoped that the project would be in a position to update the public by November, but the process is taking longer than anticipated. “We now expect to update all stakeholders and hold the second nonstatutory consultation early in the new year.” National Transport Authority (NTA) officials confirmed at an

Oireachtas Transport Committee meeting in June that they were considering an alternative solution for the tunnelboring site. Engineers are understood to be working on a ‘single-bore’ tunnel design that would do away with the need for a tunnel-boring depot at Na Fianna’s pitches. However, local organisations now face an anxious wait for confirmation that the depot will be moved. There may also be a knock-on effect for other local areas if the tunnelboring site is relocated. Fine Gael TD for Dublin North West, Noel Rock, said MetroLink needed a “clear timeline that is set in stone” following the latest setback to the consultation process. “This lack of certainty on the timeline isn’t helping anybody,” he said. “While it shouldn’t delay the date of the commencing and completion of construction, it is hitting the schools affected by

uncertainty quite hard. “When the NTA testified before the Transport Committee in June at my insistence, they said they would work to minimise this uncertainty. They do not appear to be doing so. This is regrettable.

“I want to see those affected by the construction of this project given certainty as to their future and I equally want to see us moving ahead with MetroLink, which, for the Northside, is vital.”

Deputy Rock said that many local residents welcomed the project and both the schools and sports clubs have also said they had no opposition to MetroLink. “Speaking in the short term, many have concerns

Northside school campaign pays off EDUCATE Together has been awarded patronage of four second-level schools, to be opened in 2019, including one on the Northside. The new schools will open in Donaghmede/ Belmayne (1,000 pupils), Drogheda ETSS (600 pupils), Wicklow ETSS (600 pupils), and Galway ETSS (1,000 pupils). The opening of the Online Patronage Process Survey was announced on June 22 and closed on July 31. Families in the four areas were requested

to visit a Department of Education and Skills-run website and choose their preferred patron. Paul Rowe, chief executive of Educate Together, paid tribute to all the volunteers who stepped up to campaign for the schools. “This is true people power and the opening of these equalitybased schools is their achievement,” said Mr Rowe. “These volunteers have been giving up their free time canvassing at shopping centres,

delivering leaflets and talking to other parents about what Educate Together means to them and their children. “They are doing all this for their children, local families and the wider community Educate Together would be nothing without the support of these committed volunteers. “We are looking forward to working with these communities to nurture four brand new second-level school communities.” Sandra Adams, who

Parents who expressed interest will be also contacted shortly and the admissions process for the schools will open in the coming weeks. Accommodation has not yet been confirmed for any of the schools. Senator Catherine Noone, a Fine Gael candidate for Dublin Bay North in the next general election, said: “This is great news for the people of Dublin Bay North, the new school will be established by September 2019 and will help ease the burden on our local schools. “As our community’s population continues to grow, these kind of projects will prove invaluable and allow students and parents to know that there will be a local option for their education. “The decision to award patronage of the new school to Educate Together is also a very welcome development as it reflects the direct input of parental preferences.” Senator Noone added: “The school will be housed in interim accommodation until the completion of a permanent building and will provide a much needed service to our community.”

roads, as well as installing new drainage and pollution controls, 7.5km of electrical cable, and more than 2,000 new runway and taxiway lights. The North Runway will be built at no cost to the State – as Dublin Airport Authority is not funded by the taxpayer - and will support the creation of 31,200 new Irish jobs and €2.2 billion in additional economic activity by 2043. Chief executive of the daa Dalton Philips said: “We are delighted to award this key contract to Roadbridge FCC and to move to the next phase of our plans. “North Runway is an essential project for Ireland, as it will position the country for future economic growth for many decades to come. “North Runway isn’t Dublin’s new runway; it is Ireland’s new runway and it will boost the performance of Irish tourism, trade and foreign direct investment in a post-Brexit world.” Roadbridge managing director Conor Gilligan said the Limerickbased company was honoured to be part of the consortium that will build North Runway. “We are thrilled to be involved with such a prestigious and vital national project,” Mr Gilligan said. FCC Construcción’s UK & Ireland Director Miguel Ángel Mayor said FCC had a strong track record in Ireland and looked forward to working closely with daa to build the new runway. “We have been operating successfully in Ireland for many years and also have significant experience of runway construction both in Europe and South America, having built more than 4.5 million sq m of airport runways,” he said. The new runway will be located approximately 1.6km north of Dublin Airport’s current main runway and will be entirely built on land owned by the airport.

Jailed for possession of drugs Brion Hoban A DUBLIN man caught in possession of almost €200k of drugs was storing cannabis in wheelie bins and cocaine in his kitchen, a court heard. Michael Fulton (59) of Belmont Park, Raheny, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession for sale or supply of €195,347 worth of cannabis and cocaine at his home. Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment with the final two years

suspended provided he be of good behavior upon release, that he remain drug free and that he engage with the Probation Service. The court heard that on March 16, 2016 at North Strand Road, Dublin, Fulton was driving a taxi cab and was stopped by gardaí on suspicion that he was driving while under the influence of an intoxicating substance. Fulton had cannabis with him in the car and admitted to having more drugs in his home. During a search of his house he told gardaí that he was storing cannabis

herb and resin in wheelie bins and that there was cocaine in his kitchen. He told gardaí that he began taking cannabis to assist with back pain and had agreed to store the drugs in his house to pay off a debt. He declined to name the person who he was in debt to and said he

there was more than one kind of drug being stored and that Fulton had transported the drugs. She said the mitigating factors were the lack of previous criminal activity, the early plea of guilty, his full co-operation with the investigation and that he has been substance free for 19 months.

was in fear of them. Fulton also admitted to transporting the drugs and to storing more than €11,000 for the same unnamed person. He has no previous convictions. Judge Ní Chúlacháin said the aggravating factors in the case were the high value of the drugs, that

Fulton also received a 12-month ban for driving due to his pleading guilty to driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Fergal Foley BL, prosecuting, asked for a forfeiture and destruction order for the money and drugs discovered at Fulton's home.

Students share project views

STUDENTS from a local school met Fingal County Council officials recently to share their views on arts, culture and public space in Swords. The opportunity arose from a workshop the Fingal Community College students participated in during the last school term. Invited by the council, the students explored what they like and dislike about their home town, what they would change, and what kind of cultural spaces and opportunities they would like in their town in the coming years. The impetus for this engagement is the development of the new Swords Cultural Masterplan for the area around Swords Castle and the existing

County Hall building. Aspects include a new library, theatre, project and rehearsal space, alongside a cultural hub and outdoor civic space which will redesign the cultural landscape of the town and neighbouring villages. Julie Clarke, Youth & Education Arts Officer at Fingal County Council, said consultation with young people about issues that impact their lives is important. “Opportunities for young people to tell us about their cultural needs and ambition are a vital part of the council’s work,” said Ms Clarke. The original consultation took the form of an informal interactive workshop in two locations

in Swords facilitated by professional youth arts consultant Anna Galligan. The first workshop took place in Fingal Community College and the second at Holywell Community Centre with young people from Cross Care youth services. Siobhan Lynch, a teacher at Fingal Community College, said: “This was one of the best workshops we’ve ever been involved in. It was very dynamic and creative. “Responses were captured using written, aural and visual media and the result is this wonderful report and film which the young people can stand by with pride and present to the council team.” The students presented

the final report to members of the Swords Cultural Quarter working team. Swords is ‘clean’, quiet’ and has ‘nice people’ according to the report. Swords Main Street and the Pavilions are the main locations for meeting with friends and there is a need for more ‘youth friendly’ spaces, indoor and outdoor. Nature is of significant importance and places to read, study, draw and play music. A need for resourced spaces is expressed, spaces with computers with animation and film software. Food, comfortable seating and low cost activities are also high on the list of priorities for the students.

Film Review 

Wildlife: It’s a tame story but the acting is savage PAUL Dano is known for playing odd characters. The demonic priest in ‘There Will be Blood’, the creepy neighbour in ‘Prisoners”’, and the silent sibling in ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. You might therefore, expect his directorial debut to be equally odd, but it’s not, and perhaps that’s because he spends the entire time behind the camera, rather than in front of it. ‘Wildlife’ is adapted from the Richard Ford novel of the same name and tells the story of a crumbling young family in 1960s America, from the point of view of only son, Joe, (played by Ed Oxenbould). When father Jerry ( Jake Gyllenhaal) loses his job at the local golf club, mother Jeanette (Carey Mulligan) seizes the opportunity to step out of her societally imposed role as housewife, and

dives at the chance to work as a swimming instructor. Jerry, with his pride bruised, spirals into depression and eventually opts for a low paying and dangerous position putting out forest fires. This takes him away from his family and causes further conflict at home, with Jeanette forced to explore other options to support herself and young Joe, including developing a relationship with a rich older man. We view each development in the story through the eyes of Joe, who has to deal with his father leaving, his mother cope with the fallout, and his parents’ relationship slowly fall apart. This is very much a character observation piece and a well observed one at that, but the story may move at too slow a pace for

some. Dano not only tackled the direction but also the screenplay with actress wife Zoe Kazan (‘The Big Sick’) and that may have been too much to handle for a first timer. But while the script is not without its problems, this movie is more about the performances than the story. Mulligan’s turn is simply magnificent, and she may well be in line for upcoming nominations and awards. Gyllenhaal is impressive as always and young Oxenbould has undoubted screen presence. For those reasons alone we award Wildlife a review score of 3.5 solid stars. Other releases: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms: 2.5 stars.

Community radio station highlights pubs in new series A NORTHSIDE community radio station is to broadcast a three-part series about pubs in Dublin. The ‘Dublin Public House’ series, produced by John Casey with researcher Oliver Reid, wll be broadcast on Coolock-based Near Fm at 3.30pm on November 6th, 13th and 20th. The Dublin public house is that most enduring and clear example of communal experience in the country’s capital. This new series touches on the myriad of changes experienced by the capital city since WW2, using the Dublin pub and its changing urban environment as an ideal focal point. Mindful of the effects of recession, political change and all manner of social progression, the Dublin pub has many stories to tell. Through an array of interviews with owners and managers from some of Dublin’s most beloved pubs, including John Kavanagh’s (The Gravediggers), Fallon’s off Cork Street, The Ferryman and O’Connells

in Portobello, those behind the project will explore their enduring appeal, changing drinking habits, the gender divide, literary heritage, the Celtic Tiger effect, the changing urban landscape and what these establishments mean to the people who run and drink in them. Other contributors include Associate Professor in the UCD School of Geography and Series Editor of The Making of Dublin City book series, Joe Brady and Associate Professor of Urban Governance and Development in the UCD School of Geography and author of Dublin Docklands Reinvented Niamh Moore-Cherry. The series was funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. John Casey is a producer, writer, presenter and sound designer with fifteen years’ experience working in community and national radio. Recent and upcoming projects include the BAI funded radio dramas Jamesy, Desert Island and Cold Memory in partnership with Near Fm.

Brendan O’Carroll gives his backing to charity’s campaign COMEDIAN and actor Brendan O’Carroll and his wife and co-star Jenny Gibney are calling on the public to back a new campaign for ALONE, the charity that supports older people to age at home. ‘Have a Laugh for Loneliness’ encourages people to host social events for family, friends and neighbours, to raise funds to support the charity’s services. A major element of ALONE’s support is its befriending service. This pairs older people, who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation, with trained volunteers who can offer help with practical tasks and most importantly, offer friendship. As part of the ‘Have a Laugh for Loneliness’ initiative, ALONE is encouraging members of the public to host social

events and to have a laugh to raise funds for these crucial services while combating loneliness in their own community. Last week, the charity published its 2017 Annual Report which cited a 100 percent increase in the number of older people using its services since 2016. In comparison, ALONE’s donations increased by just 15 percent during this time. Speaking at the launch, Finglas native Brendan O’Carroll said it was fantastic to be part of the campaign. “It’s awful to think that as many as 1 in 10 older people experience chronic loneliness,” said the Northside comedian and star of Mrs Brown’s Boys. “ALONE’s work to combat this is extremely valuable and the difference it makes in the lives of older people

Chief executive of ALONE Seán Moynihan warned that loneliness can shorten a person’s life.

“Thousands of older people across the country struggle with loneliness every day,” said Mr

Moynihan. “ALONE is delighted to have Brendan and Jenny on board to launch this campaign, which we hope will help us to support more of those people. “Receiving a regular call or visit from ALONE offering friendship and support is a simple thing which can make a huge difference to older people. “Our volunteers are invaluable to ALONE’s Befriending work and we’re constantly looking to recruit and train more people in order to keep up with the calls we receive.” Mr Moynihan added that through the campaign, they are hoping to raise vital funds for the service which saw its 1,000th volunteer trained this year. Gabrielle returns to Ireland with show in Olympia Theatre GABRIELLE has announced a UK and Ireland tour next year that will include a date at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on Friday, March 22. This will be the first time that Gabrielle has performed in Ireland for over 10 years and the announcement coincided with Gabrielle’s debut appearance as main support on Rick Astley’s UK tour. Gabrielle will be performing both songs from her new album and showcasing her signature hits. ‘Under My Skin’ was released this July and charted in the UK charts at No 7, her highest charting release since ‘Rise’ topped the charts in 2000. ‘Under My Skin’ is Gabrielle’s first studio album in 11 years and marks 25 years since the release of her debut single, ‘Dreams’.

The No 1 single stormed the charts all over Europe and Australia, going Gold in the UK and cementing Gabrielle as one of the most exciting names in pop music. Two and a half decades later ‘Under My Skin’ is reminding the world of Gabrielle’s signature, heart-warming, soul-stirring voice. ‘Under My Skin’ is released through BMG. Gabrielle is one of the UK’s most successful British singer-songwriters. She has sold over five million records in the UK alone and scored two No 1 singles, 10 Top 10 singles, a No 1 album and five Top 10 albums. She is also a two-time BRIT Award winner, receiving the Best British Break-through Act in 1994 and the Best British Female Solo Artist in 1997. Gabrielle has also won various MOBO Awards and an Ivor

Novello for Outstanding Song Collection. Born in July 1969 in Hackney, London, Louisa Gabrielle Bobb was known for her ptosis, the drooping of one eyelid. She released her debut single ‘Dreams’ in 1993 which topped the UK Singles Chart the same year. Other singles include ‘Going Nowhere’, ‘Give Me a Little More Time’, ‘Walk On By’ and ‘If You Ever’ - a duet with East 17. After a few quiescent years Gabrielle made a comeback with ‘Rise’, which became Gabrielle's second UK No 1 in 2000. The album of the same name also reached the top spot in the UK Albums Chart, where it stayed for three weeks. ‘Out of Reach’ from the soundtrack to the film Bridget Jones's Diary reached number four in the UK Singles Chart.

Gabrielle's greatest hits collection, ‘Dreams Can Come True, Greatest Hits Vol 1’ was released in 2001. Gabrielle's first two studio albums were inspired by "classic soul connotations" such as Marvin Gaye, Barry White and Bobby Womack.

However, the albums also contained influence by early-'80s British pop Soul II Soul, Lisa Stansfield and Mantronix. Gabrielle's third album Rise spoke of "optimism, romanticism, devotion, and a keen survival instinct" Gabrielle spoke on the album's influences saying:

"There's also a couple of songs which lean more to Country, so there will be a couple of surprises for them. This album is diverse but people buying my music can expect diverse music; it's about love, life and optimism." Gabrielle cited her high school teacher as one

influence, saying that she was "inspired the mo-ment her teacher asked her to construct her first poem. Other inspirations came through in an eclectic collection of 1980s pop including Madonna, Culture Club, Haircut One Hundred, and Duran Duran.

Bohs’ Marley jersey is a big hit A LEAGUE of Ireland jersey launch isn’t usually considered newsworthy but when Bohemian FC revealed their 2019 away kit recently it made headlines around the world. The controversial top features an image of Bob Marley in what the club describes as a ‘nod’ to the history of Dalymount Park

where the reggae legend once played to a packed stadium. The new jersey instantly divided fans with some describing it as an abomination or embarrassing, but others embraced the design and praised the club for being creative and innovative. But regardless of views, the launch has been an

unprecedented success with pre-orders outselling the combined sales of away jerseys from the past two seasons within hours. Less than a day after launch, the first batch of 1,000 had totally sold out. It’s also been making headlines not just in Ireland, but around the world as traditional soccer fans debated whether the

jersey was artistic genius or just a tacky eyesore. According to the club, the jersey, designed in conjunction with kit supplier O’Neill’s, is a tribute to the stadium's special place in the hearts of both football and music fans. Bohs director Daniel Lambert admitted he was taken aback by the response to the new kit. ‫”‏‬Pretty astonished at the reaction to this, but it's great to see so many people discussing Bohs on a quiet Tuesday afternoon,” he posted on Twitter. “The old stadium has seen many events aside from football and celebrating some of that history is nice before the floodlights are torn down.” Lambert also pointed out that Bohs are up against the English Premier League’s mighty marketing machine and needed to “think outside the box” to get attention. Modelling the new jersey alongside Bohs player Rob Cornwall, comedian and

recent Bohs convert PJ Gallagher said he loved the new top. “It's a great design and it's always great to see Dublin’s best club find new ways to celebrate their history and that of the Home of Irish Football,” he added. Gallagher also joked about the link between Eurovision legend Johnny Logan and Bohs fans, who took to the singer when they bumped into him on the flight back from a UEFA cup game. "To be honest I was hoping for a Johnny Logan jersey but maybe that’ll be next season. What’s another year?”. Bohs’ supporter Cllr Larry O'Toole (SF) also expressed his satisfaction with the jersey. “I’m very happy with it, I think it’s a great initiative," he said. "The product went viral in a couple of hours which is great for the club and the Born again Bohs fan PJ Gallagher. league in general. time when Kia sales have more than doubled since its initial introduction. Kia offers the car in five-door hatchback format and Sportswagon; it is not building a three-door version. The latest model features a new yet recognisable design, but it is not just about new looks. This car is about new engines and hugely improved ride and handling

capabilities. It’s also a car that displays greater refinement and features new driver assistance systems. Lower and wider than before, straight lines now replace the rounded edges of its predecessor. It’s got a wider ‘tiger-nose’ grille and lower air intake and the latest Ceed features ‘ice cube’ LED daytime running lights as standard.

These LEDs echo the appearance of earlier Kia GT and GT Line models and are an attractive feature which helps instantly identify this new car. While the boot volume has increased by 15 litres to 395 (1,291 with the seats folded), the boot capacity of the Sportswagon has grown 97 litres to 625 (seats upright), expanding to 1,694 litres when the rear

seats are folded. While my focus in this report is mainly on the five-door hatchback, I also drove the 115mm longer estate that has lost its previous wedge shape design in favour of a more appealing look, and the latest upgraded Sportage. Inside the new Ceed, it’s noticeable that higher-quality materials are used throughout.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

The Snake in the Signal Box THERE is a beautiful land in Africa cradled by the Lebombo Mountains, the Drakensberg and the Indian Ocean where this story begins and ends. Between the book’s covers is a rich and colourful tale set in the Natal

About The Author BORN in Durban, William Paterson lived with his Scottish South African parents, sister, servants and animals in an old colonial hilltop house with acres of garden overlooking the Umgeni River valley and the Indian Ocean. His father had fought in East Africa, then went farming in Zululand before the Great Depression forced him to give up the farm. He spent the rest of his working years in the media, after studying Business Administration and reading for a Communications Degree at UNISA which led him to found a communications company in Johannesburg. He and his Irish wife are now settled in a small village near Wexford where he spends his days researching and writing the sequels to this novel and walking on the beach in the early mornings.

of 1919, the first in the Kirkwood family trilogy, which spans the post war years between 1919 and 1946. The war is over and the spoils go to the survivors. Donald Kirkwood is a Scottish soldier, a 24-year-old who endured the horrors of the ‘forgotten’ war in East Africa. He, his Anglo-Irish neighbour Toby Strafford and 50 other like-minded settlers are granted 1,500 acres each of raw veld to farm. It’s on the traditional land of the Zulus but they had been shunted off to reserves soon after their defeat in 1879 when Britain annexed their territory and declared it Crown Land. It was sections of this territory which were thrown open for white ex-servicemen. The Zulus refuse to labour on the whites’ land so indentured Indians have been shipped in to do the dirty work. The Dutch are a resentful presence, defeated in South Africa by their English-speaking counterparts, as their German allies were defeated on the European stage. There are rumblings of a covert society being formed to get rid of the English once and for all. Kirkwood and his fellow planters must cope with Spanish Flu, malaria, sleeping sickness, Nagana (a devastating cattle disease) and nonexistent roads. At Richard’s Bay a neighbour is attacked by a Zambian shark in four feet of

water while a small Indian girl plays on the beach. News of his death reaches outlying farms by shared telephone party-lines while the distant Zulus drum the news to their ancestors. At his funeral a clergyman is out of favour for a favourable mention of an Anglican bishop who suggested tolerance of Zulu polygamy. Donald and his neighbours are swept up helping victims of the second wave of Spanish flu, the Three-Day-Sickness, as it decimates the little community. During his early efforts to start a cotton farm he meets Emily, a spirited farmer’s daughter; but later meets Prue, a pretty red-headed librarian in Durban. Prue possesses a secret with international dimensions while murky characters jockey for position. Whether they know it or not the resumption of the First World War is not far off. Unsettling theories of eugenics and underclasses seep into an affluent white society while the evil of apartheid hovers in the wings and ‘national socialism’ smoulders in Germany. Threading together these elements is an evocation of post-colonial Natal – the romantic old Durban port of rickshaws, silent movies, a sign reading: ‘Beware of Coconuts!’ and the enchantment of falling in love. ‘The Snake in the Signal Box’ was published in August and is available worldwide in paperback from Amazon and in eBook on Kindle, iBooks and Kobo.

New author’s tale of a unique Irish assassin A NEW Dublin author, Paddy Johnson, has just released his first thriller book entitled ‘Reilly’s Bullet’ which follows the story of a traditional Irish musician who develops a method of assassination that leaves no forensic evidence. Typically, there is no evidence of the type of gun involved, distance between target and shooter, weapon used and nothing to relate to other killings. This leads to confusion and frustration in the security services, but it also highlights how strategically important the weapon could be. The technician, Reilly, uses the technique with an assassination in Dublin to prove its capability and to generate publicity in its impact. He then contacts various foreign government agencies in order to sell the technology. Reilly, who is also a semi-pro bodhran player, then goes on a tour with his musical colleagues while simultaneously dealing with the sale of the technology. The tour includes countries in the Middle

East, the Far East and Australia where foreign governments are contacted with a view to selling on this mysterious new technology. As Reilly becomes aware of the danger this poses it increases his desire to enjoy life to the full. The music tour continues as Reilly deals with the various difficulties he has put himself in. The fact that he, while travelling, is more difficult to be identified and be injured or killed causes further frustration in the government agencies. Meanwhile, the tour has its own ups and downs while Reilly continues his negotiations with various agencies. Reilly later returns to life in Ireland with an opportunity to expand his musical and technical careers as his dubious sideline work is finally resolved. Author Paddy Johnson is a retired mechanical engineer and has lived in the countries described in the book allowing for an accurate description of each place.

YOU’VE got the mortgage approval and you’re looking forward to going out looking at properties but viewing a new home can be a frustrating experience for the uninitiated. After you walk through your first few potential buys you can suddenly realise that you’re not sure exactly what you’re supposed to be looking for. Well, usually you’re going to be restricted by what you can borrow so the first thing is to keep your viewings to properties within your price range. After the price the next thing to look for is the things that are going to be essential to you on a daily basis. Ask yourself are the areas you’re looking in too far from your friends and family. Proximity to work is another obvious important factor. You want to have time to enjoy your new home and being stuck in traffic for four hours a day can soon take the joy out of property ownership. If your property is in a

city location ask what the parking arrangements are. Write down the ten most important features you’re looking for in a home in order of importance and decide which ones you could live without. List all the areas, towns and counties which you would consider living in and familiarise yourself with them. If you have narrowed down your search look at other homes in the area. What’s the neighbourhood like? Can you live with its bad points as well as the good ones. Visit the area at different times including rush hour, weekends and night time to get a better overall feel for the neighbourhood. Check out the local facilities and services such as shops, local bars and restaurants, fitness centres etc. Even if you don’t have any kids just yet, find out what’s available in the line of schools and play facilities. You’re probably going to stay in your property for a long time so it’s important to consider your needs for

for cracks. Ask if the property has been recently rewired and look at all of the wiring. It’s all too easy to be won over by nice furnishings and a good paint job but sellers will take their furniture with them and a coat of paint is something you can easily do yourself. The key is to see the potential in a property. People tend to be put off if the place is a bit tatty but the likelihood is that you’ll get a better deal. The only important things are the structure, space and location of the building. Try not to be swayed by superficial issues. Don’t forget location is the key – choosing the worst property in a good area is far more likely to be a better investment than a great property in a bad area. Another major consideration when buying a house is to consider what happens when you come to sell it on. There might be some impracticality that you’re prepared to put up with but consider whether most people would think

the future. Think twice about buying an apartment or flat - it may suit you now but will it if you decide to start a family? Is there room for extending if necessary? Find out from the local authorities about future development plans which could affect the value of your home and completely change your new home’s environment. When you actually get down to viewing local properties think about what they are going to be like in winter and summer. Which direction is the garden facing? Will it have the sun in the morning or afternoon? Remember that it will pay to be suspicious of anything you see and hear. The outside of the house may look nice but could it be just a fresh lick of paint? Does it hide dodgy brickwork? Are the walls bulging and is the woodwork rotten? These are problems that will be very expensive to rectify. Inside the property look out for signs of damp and check all walls and ceilings

House & Home 31 the same. If you like what you see in your potential new home you should go back to the property at a different time of day. The best time for this would be in either the morning or evening rush hours so you can see if the road is used by commuters as a rat run. It might be worth driving by late at night to see if there’s gang of teens

hanging around. They can make your life hell. This is especially true if the property is end of terrace or near a laneway. Should you be happy after all this you can then make an offer on the property. A offer is made subject to a survey and contract which gives you a chance to withdraw should any problems arise.

While at the event, guests will have the opportunity to enter a show-stopping competition to win a €500 voucher to spend at Tesco, solving all of your festive foodie needs. Elsewhere, one lucky attendee will go home with a brand new DFS sofa, as part of a raffle competition across the weekend event. Every attendee will leave with a bespoke luxury goodie bag filled with Tesco Finest treats, exclusive discount offers and more to be revealed. Jo Linehan of GAFF Interiors said: “We are so excited to host our first ever event, bringing our loyal readers and the wonderful brands with whom we’ve worked together under one roof for an unforgettable, feel-good weekend.” Tickets for the GAFF Christmas Pop Up Experience are now available on Eventbrite.

CHRISTMAS can be a hectic, stressful time of year, especially when it comes to frantic gift buying in crowded stores. However, GAFF Interiors has come up with an innovative idea that will provide a much more enjoyable festive shopping experience this year. The GAFF Interiors team is inviting decor lovers in particular to experience a totally different, more enjoyable kind of shopping experience on November 24 and 25, at Dublin’s Studio 10. Over the weekend, there will be an opportunity to swap the never-ending queues and panicstyle frenzy synonymous with Christmas for an unforgettable, interactive shopping experience that will leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready for all the good things that December brings. Tucked away on Wicklow Street, and spread across two beautiful floors with elegant sash windows overlooking the city’s sparkling lights, you’ll find a magical, immersive Christmas pop-up, sponsored by DFS, supported by Tesco Finest and in aid of Peter McVerry Trust, the national housing and homeless charity. Shoppers can stroll around at their own pace, revel in the sounds and scents of Christmas, and experience an inspiring festive setting while doing their good deed for the season. Tickets for the pop up cost €12, and all proceeds go directly to Peter McVerry Trust to support the wonderful work they do. “Peter McVerry Trust would like to thank the organisers and supporters of this lovely event,”

ART SOURCE

THE KNITTING & STITCHING SHOW

The Knitting & Stitching show returns to the RDS from November 8 to 11. There will be 150 must-see exhibitors selling specialist supplies, along with demonstrations, interactive workshops and galleries curated by internationally acclaimed textile artists. There will be a host of hands-on activities with workshops on offer taught by leading textile tutors. A million euro wall of Pop Art featuring works by Andy Warhol is set to feature at Ireland’s premier art fair Art Source, at the RDS from November 9-11. Among the artists featured at Art Source is Irish Pop Art sensation Cavanagh Foyle, an aviation lawyer who is fast gaining an international following for her provocative and colourful mixed media paintings. Admission is €10 adults, €8 OAPs. Children under 16 free if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Opening times: Friday Nov 9: 11am-9pm, Sat Nov 10: 10am-6pm, Sun Nov 11: 10am-6pm.

FALLEN ANGELS

TO PREPARE A FACE EXHIBITION

Artist and poet, Eoghan O'Driscoll, will showcase a collection of his latest works in his debut Dublin exhibition at The Gallery@ Framexperts in Ranelagh from November 9 to 15. His body of work includes both portraiture and free flowing abstract images. With a deep understanding of the human condition, Eoghan's work compels us to stop and reflect on what really matters.
