NORTHSIDE PEOPLE COMMENT

You can’t put a price on health   YOU can never put a price on human health. That was the overriding message last week when An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar addressed the nation and laid out

starkly the challenges ahead as we come to terms with the dreaded coronavirus (COVID-19). If ever there was any doubt we are in unchartered

territory, the Taoiseach’s speech brought home the reality of the pandemic sweeping across every continent on the planet, and one which was inevitably

going to land on our shores. As the predictable panic buying took a grip on the retail sector, hundreds of local community groups and sporting organisations

heeded the call from our health experts and decided to suspend their events until the perilous situation eases. Schools, colleges, cultural institutions, libraries and

gyms were among those to take immediate action and close their doors in a bid to play their part. Continued on page 3

overflow into the Naniken river in St Anne’s Park will be resolved swiftly. Irish Water and Dublin City Council are investigating the cause of the overflow which they suspect is being caused by a blockage under the river. It will be necessary to empty an underground sewage tank, so crews can access the blockage and be able to remove it. Signs have been erected in the park by Dublin City Council informing the public of the sewage overflow. Deputy Haughey said: “I welcome the work done so far by Irish Water and Dublin City Council in resolving this issue and the safety of the crews doing these works is key. “St Anne’s Park is the green lung of the Northside and it is regrettable that an incident with such a negative environmental impact has happened.

“I’d urge locals to stay safe and not to let their children or dogs near the river or pond in St Anne’s Park until this issue is resolved. “I hope the problem can be identified and solved as soon as possible so people can enjoy every part of St Anne’s Park again.” Irish Water said this incident was a reminder to the public not to flush items such as wet wipes and cotton buds down the toilet. Irish Water said putting fats, oils and greases down the kitchen sink also causes blockages and overflows which impact the environment. Irish Water has promoted the ‘Think Before You Flush’ public awareness campaign with the aim of protecting sewer networks and wastewater treatment plants. In a statement to Northside People, Dublin

Deputy Sean Haughey (FF) City Council said: “On Friday, February 28, the Water Pollution Control (WPC) received a pollution incident report from a member of the public. “This report subsequently confirmed that sewerage had been discharging into the Naniken River in St Anne’s Park, Raheny.  “This incident has been reported to the Environmental Protection Agency and Irish Water. “WPC has blocked the Naniken River from supplying the Pond waters in St Anne’s Park (sandbags). No wildlife kill has been identified (fish or bird). The issue is still being resolved on site.” The warning sign at St Anne’s Park. You can’t put a price on health Continued from page 3 And ‘playing our part’ is the key phrase here. By using common sense we can play our part in preventing the virus from spreading even further. We have received so much advice in the past fortnight about personal hygiene, in particular, that we could nearly rhyme off the bullet points on the posters and that’s no bad thing. Avoiding large gatherings will also be crucial in reducing the risk of catching the virus or passing it on unwittingly. Of course, people will be put out by ‘Ireland’s

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar addressed the nation. Unprecedented Shutdown’ but might take comfort in the fact that there were no alternatives. Plans will have to be put on hold, trips abroad perhaps, holidays, weddings, Communions,

Confirmations, attending sporting events, theatres, cinemas, music concerts, the list goes on and on. Even major world events such as the Olympics in Japan and Euro 2020 may not take place which no one could ever have predicted when the virus was in its embyronic stage. While there isn’t one person in the country that won’t be discommoded by COVID-19, spare at thought for those people in the ‘at-risk’ category, including the elderly and

those with underlying medical conditions. It could literally mean the difference between life and death if they are unlucky enough to contract the virus. Also, spare a thought at this time for our healthcare workers, and thousands of others working tirelessly on the frontline as the fire, that is COVID-19, rages before them. As a nation we are renowned for our resilience. Let’s prove it as we bid to slay this dreaded beast!

How to talk to your child about Covid-19 SUZANNE CONNOLLY Chief executive Barnardos www.barnardos.ie

WITH news of the coronavirus dominating headlines, social media platforms and conversations across the country, your child is likely to have already heard information about the illness. Your child may be trying to make sense of this information by themselves and be feeling worried or scared. In the absence of definitive information, some children can imagine situations are far worse than

they are. At Barnardos, we are offering parents the following advice when talking to them about coronavirus. 1. Keep calm. Check in with yourself: how are you currently feeling? When parents are feeling anxious children can notice this and begin to feel stressed too. If needed, take some time for yourself or talk to another adult about your fears before talking to your child. 2. Talk to your child. As parents, we instinctively want to protect children from things that might frighten them. However, not talking about something can make children more scared. Ask your child to tell you what they have heard about the virus and ask them how they are feeling. Let your child

PHOTO POSED/ BIGSTOCK

know that they can ask you questions. If you do not have all the answers, that is ok. Tell your child you will let them know when you know. 3. Answer questions. Many children will have heard about the virus and may already be asking questions. This is an opportunity to talk openly to your child and to share fact-based information. Answer your child’s questions in language they will understand with a level of information appropriate to your child’s age. Avoid sharing too much information as this

can be overwhelming. 4. Create a safe environment. Your child might be worried they will catch the virus. To reassure your child, talk to them about everything you and they are doing to stay safe, for example, washing their hands, using and disposing of tissues etc. Try to limit your child’s exposure to news reports and discuss your worries outside your child’s earshot. 5. Maintain a daily routine. A consistent daily routine is very important for children as it creates a

sense of stability and predictability. This is of particular importance since the nationwide school and crèche closures. Keep the days structured with consistent mealtimes, playtime, bedtime etc. 6. The best way you can support your child whenever they are feeling anxious is by reassuring them. Tell them you understand how they are feeling and let them know you are always there to listen, support, take care of them and give them a hug when needed.

their bike inside will not use their bikes as much because it is awkward for them to take their bike out every day. Bike Bunkers are an easy and accessible way for residents to keep their bike handy without the bike being in danger of being stolen or damaged. The bunkers are robust and non-flammable and will keep the bikes dry and safe. Green Party Councillor Donna Cooney said this new initiative is great for people who live in apartments or in the inner city. “It’s the convenience, really, of being able to go straight out and there they [the bikes] are,” she said. “You could also go away for the weekend and not have any concerns.” The Bunkers are semi cylinder metal huts that will be placed in free car

parking spaces close to the home of residents who have subscribed to the service. A suitable space that is free has to be found before a Bike Bunker can be installed there. Spaces that will be used by a bunker will have a colourful sign placed on them for a few weeks prior to installation, to make local residents aware that there will no longer be a parking space for use there. Bike Bunkers are currently a subscription service of €100 a year and can be shared by up to six residents. The first trial lasted around five months on John Dillon Street in Dublin 8 at a cost of €4,800. The innovative new service will hopefully be available across much of the Northside of the city next year.

GAA club enjoys big success with kids’ section A NORTHSIDE GAA club is enjoying big success after relaunching its juvenile section. Innisfails GAA Club in Balgriffin, one of the oldest clubs in the country, started ‘Acorns’, with just five children. However, it has grown exponentially, without the assistance of a Games Promotions Officer or school connection, and is now nurturing three teams and a nursery group. Tony Greenhalgh, vice chairman of Innisfails, said the success of the rejuvenation is down to dedication, passion and hard work from the club’s adult members. “We didn’t have a juvenile section for 10 years so we were very adult focused,” says Greenhalgh. “We knew that with an aging membership, the club could only go so far. The group who started the ‘Acorns’

grew up with this club and know what a club can be. GAA doesn’t just mean sport: it means belonging, socialising and support. With all the new communities developing in the area, we really wanted to merge old members with new communities, taking a new approach to the continuation of the club.” Since 2017, the Acorns has grown from just five children to over 70, and with many different nationalities involved, the future has never been brighter. Stefan Pelgen, from Germany, joined the club with his son, Max.  “Max was such a quiet, shy little boy when we joined and I was a German dad in Dublin,” says Pelgen. “Now Max is so outgoing and confident. We have both made loads of friends and I have even become a coach.” Trainings, matches and

The current Acorns children’s group with some of the other junior teams and coaches at Innisfails GAA Club in Balgriffin. PHOTO: DARREN KINSELLA accompanying activities are all free. There is an exceptionally high coach-to-child ratio and there are complimentary refreshments provided for everyone on Saturdays thus encouraging the club’s social side. The club’s PRO, Nicola Foxe, says: “I didn’t grow up in a GAA community and the thoughts of joining one of the bigger clubs slightly intimidated me. “But when I heard about Innisfails,

its history and rejuvenation, I thought that sounded great: a historical club that my children could grow with. “My daughter, Nina, loves being part of a team and my three-year-old, Elise, is always welcome and loves being part of the club even if she is too little to train yet. It’s just brilliant to be part of it.” Innisfail’s Acorns have just celebrated their third year since rejuvenation and new members are

always welcome. Juvenile training take place every Saturday at 9.45am while the club also has other societies and allweather facilities available for new members, including a pitch and putt course, pool and darts teams, indoor bowls, karate. “Innisfails was and is a community club with something for everyone and with more in the pipeline,” adds Greenhalgh.

Culinary event on the menu for Skerries chef A NORTHSIDE man is set to take part in an event this month which aims to highlight how rewarding a career as a chef can be. Derek McClelland (pictured), from Skerries, is among 12 final-year BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts students from Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) who will take part in 'Chef Takeover' from March 24-27. The students, who will take over the kitchen of Bellissimo restaurant in Waterford for four nights, have created tasting menus with a strong focus on exceptional local produce. They will be working the kitchen at the event in a variety of roles, from head chef to pastry specialist. Derek, a past pupil of

Skerries Community College, has been a Culinary Arts student at Waterford Institute of Technology since 2015. He has a Higher certificate in Culinary Arts and is now in his final year of a BA (Hons) Culinary Arts at the institute. Derek, who has a passion for pastry, is currently specialising in it for his final year of college. He is an avid enthusiast of living sustainably, buying local when he can and eating seasonal produce. In 2018, Derek was crowned champion of the first Dairy Chef competition which took place at DIT. The competition was in partnership with the National Dairy Council

(NDC) and the embassy of France to Ireland. He was one of six culinary arts students chosen in Ireland and paired with one French culinary student. The students had to create a three-course meal using the best of Irish and French dairy products which saw Derek come out on top,

winning a weeklong internship in Paris. Derek has recently returned home from a mandatory international year, taking part in a work and college placement as part of Year Three of the programme. He worked as a pastry chef at the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel in Alberta, Canada, before going on to attend classes at the worldrenowned Institute Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France. In the past Derek has worked for some of the top hotels and chefs in Ireland, including the K Club, a 5-star hotel located in Kildare. Derek McClelland

Flooding study update FINGAL County Council recently presented an update on the Rogerstown Estuary Coastal Flooding and Erosion Risk Management Study to the Fingal Coastal Liaison Group. The study, which is being carried out by RPS engineering consultants, examines the options available to address coastal flooding and erosion risk in Rush and Portrane. Preferred options have emerged in both areas and the draft plan was presented recently at a meeting involving the council, the Office of Public Works (OPW) and representatives from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht working in the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). RPS have been asked to provide further information on different aspects of their proposals prior to the Risk Management Study and its recommendations being finalised and approved. Public meetings will be arranged in the coming weeks to update the local community on these plans The meeting also agreed to augment the current coastal erosion measures at the Burrow, Portrane. Regular cleanups of the beach are also being carried out by the council’s operations department. The council said that once the Options Study is finalised in the coming weeks, work will commence promptly on the preparation of an application to An Bord Pleanála for the necessary permission to facilitate construction of the recommended permanent coastal erosion and flood defences. The OPW has also confirmed that the Portrane to Rush coastal area has recently been selected as a pilot site for regular monitoring of the coastline in order to inform future plans for addressing coastal erosion and flooding risks.

Film Review 

Radioactive movie lacks any real spark THE incredible true story of Marie Curie. That’s how this one is billed and it’s a pity, because the story is genuinely remarkable, but the film sadly isn’t. Marie Curie of course discovered radium, and won the Nobel Prize for doing so. Nice job. Not quite as talented, but someone nonetheless at the top of his game is Jack Thorne, screenwriter here and also responsible for the impressive ‘Aeronauts’ and ‘His Dark Materials’. Add into the mix the more than capable Rosamund Pike in the lead role and we should be in safe hands. But something went badly wrong, and we suspect someone who should have known better got their red pen out to “improve” what was surely a decent script.

The result is a bit of a mess, paint-by-numbers would be generous. This happens, then that happens, then this happens. Totally lacking in drama, with poor dialogue to boot. We award ‘Radioactive’ a review score of two burnt out stars. Some recent releases are more worthy of a watch this week. ‘The Hunt' is like an adult ‘Hunger Games’ where randomers are hunted down in the wilderness by global elites. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, is harmless fun and comes with a satisfying 90-minute runtime. Betty Gilpin and Hillary Swank star. ‘Calm with Horses’ is a kind of countryside ‘Cardboard Gangsters’, or ‘Love Hate’ meets ‘The Hardy Bucks’. It’s not funny, but then again neither was ‘Hardy Bucks’, but

it does have the grit and grime of the other films mentioned. It stars Cosmo Jarvis, Niamh Algar and Barry Keoghan and is noteworthy for Jarvis’ performance in particular. Irish movie makers and funders seem to be obsessed with gangs and drug dealers, but are there any more stories left to tell? Finally, ‘Misbehaviour’ stars Keira Knightley and Jessie Buckley in a look back at the 1970 Miss World competition where the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement rushed the stage and the first black winner was crowned. If you like tut-tutting in disappointment at the TV shows your parents used to blissfully enjoy, you’ll get a special kick out of this one. PAUL O’ROURKE

Education boost for north east inner city THE Taoiseach, Minister for Education and Minister for Finance launched a new P-Tech pilot at Larkin Community College late last year. The programme is designed to open new educational and employment opportunities for young students. Pathway in Technology, or P-Tech, integrates secondary learning with elements of third level education and work experience. The aim is to provide a relevant education that will increase the chance to find employment in a competitive environment and fills a skills gap. The high tech modules will be introduced in the second year accompanied by workshops, mentorship and paid internship options provided by industry partners.

Festival funding boost for Fingal FINGAL County Council has announced funding of €288,000 to 43 groups and organisations across the county under the Festival and Events Funding Programme 2020. Awarded by Events Unit from the Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development Department, the funding will assist a wide range of musical, sporting and cultural events across the county in the months ahead. The Events Unit recently released its calendar for 2020 which covers 30 event locations, supporting 12 community festivals, 36 family events, 16 cultural events, 21 historical events along with 20 sporting events and seven concerts. Among the highlights are the Balbriggan Summerfest, Howth Maritime and Seafood Festival, the seven St Patrick’s Day parades in the county, two motorcycle races, a Dublin 15 Family Fun Day, Safer Together Summer Festival and the European Cross Country Championships in December. The Leinster Fleadh will take place in Swords this July and is expected to attract up

to 100,000 visitors over the 10 days. This is a Creative Fingal supported event with an extensive programme of activities and 300 competitions. In addition, the Events Unit also supports the seven 5k Parkruns across the county, which attracts 240,000 participants, as well as the four Junior Parkruns which now has 33,000 participants. The successful groups attended an Event and Festival training session at Fingal offices where presentations were made by Dublin Fire Brigade, the Health Service Executive and Fingal County Council’s Operations and Environmental Awareness sections.   Since the formation of the Events Unit in 2010, the number of events being held and supported annually has increased year on year. The programme is a combination of the council’s own events, events in partnership with other bodies that have similar objectives, and events run by external organisers who receive direct funding contributions from the council through a financial

“I have no doubt that they will attract local people and visitors from far and wide and I look forward to attending many of the events in the months ahead,” he said. Director of Economic,

Enterprise and Tourism Development Emer O’Gorman said: “We are delighted to provide financial support to this broad range of groups and organisations which generate many positive economic, social

and cultural benefits across our communities. “Promoting, funding and organising sustainable festivals and events is a key action of the Fingal Statement of Tourism Strategy 2017-2022.”

Mini marathon is launched A GROUP of women came together in Dublin last week to launch the 2020 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon.  The event, now in its 38th year, will take place on Bank Holiday Sunday, May 31.  Over 30,000 women are expected to walk, jog and run the 10K route in Dublin city centre, starting in Fitzwilliam Square and finishing on Baggot Street. The Ryan sisters Lottie and Bonnie, along with mum, Morah, broadcaster Georgie Crawford, fitness enthusiast Leanne Moore and actress Demi Isaac Oviawe will make up the 2020 Vhi Squad. The group is calling on women all around the country to run stronger together and join them at the largest all female event of its kind in the world. At the launch, Vhi revealed a brand new finisher t-shirt for this year’s event which will be given to everyone who crosses the finish line. Vhi is also rewarding each

of its customers who have paid the €25 entry fee for the event with a €25 reward which they can claim using Snap & Send in the Vhi app. For the first time ever this year, the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon is offering women the opportunity to have a personalised race number so each participant’s name will appear on the race number that will be worn on the day, giving women the opportunity to be cheered on and supported by the crowd. Women who register for the event before May 4 have the opportunity to receive their race number by post and there will also be a number of race number pick-up points in Dublin and around the country in May. The Vhi said it is delighted to welcome Dublin City Council on board as one of the official race partners this year and is looking forward to working with them to showcase the capital city on race day. Entries are open now at

www. with the 2020 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon. David O’Leary, General Manager, Women’s Mini Marathon, said the event is far more than a race. “It is mostly about empowerment; of communities, of causes and of women,” said Mr O’Leary. “And, of course, it is about fun, fitness, families and friendship too. GAA clubs urged to share Féile memories BOYS and girls’ Under 14 GAA teams on the Northside, gearing up for this year’s John West Féile, can win €1,000 of kit by creating videos of their club’s Féile memories. Natural protein experts John West, who sponsor the Féile na nÓg and Féile na nGael U-14 football, hurling and camogie tournaments, are preparing for the competition finals with a €1,000 kit giveaway to teams. The 2020 John West Féile na nGael hurling and camogie finals will

take place in Dublin, Kildare and Meath on the weekend of June 5-7. This year, the John West Féile na nÓg football finals will be held across Donegal, Derry and Tyrone on the weekend of June 26-28. Throughout its sponsorship of the Féile, John West has focused on encouraging children to participate in Gaelic Games while emphasising the importance natural protein plays in fuelling a young athlete. Four GAA clubs now have the chance to win

€1,000 each towards their Féile 20 kit. Last year proved very successful for one Northside club, Erin’s Isle. The Finglas-based club was celebrating after its talented Under 14 footballers won the 2019 John West Féile na nÓg final. Entries are now open for this year’s competition and to be in with a chance of winning, all teams have to do is send a short video through the Teamer app featuring their club’s best Féile

Ideas can include profiling a Féile hero, photographs set to music of a magical Féile moments, Féile journeys, the role of your coach, training highlights, parental support and host family memories. Lucy Gratton of John

West said “before we know it, the finals will be upon us”. “We know getting to the finals requires fundraising to support the journey,” said Ms Gratton. “That’s why we are giving four clubs the chance to win €1,000 each towards their Féile 2020 kit.

“A core aim of Féile is to promote the philosophy that every player should participate at a level fitting with their age, skills and strengths as well as allowing clubs to play against and foster links with teams in other counties and provinces. “Creating and sharing

special memories is also a very important part of Féile and we would like clubs to use the Teamer app to share a video which highlights this. “There are four prizes of €1,000 on offer, one each for a boys’ gaelic football club, girls’ gaelic football club, hurling club and camogie club.”

Meet the Car of the Year THE new Peugeot 208 has been crowned the 2020 Car of the Year by a panel of judges made up of 60 European automotive journalists. The jury appreciated the bold design and technology features onboard the all-new 208, together with the ‘power of choice’ customer offer. Customers choose their preferred trim, then the

powertrain, whether petrol, diesel or electric, without compromising on space, technology, looks or driving sensations. Already a European best-seller, it is also the first ‘2 series’ and the sixth Peugeot to be awarded this most prestigious prize, during the 56-year history of the awards. Car of the Year 2020, the new 208 rewrites the

book in the B segment. Available with either an electric engine or an internal combustion engine, the new 208 provides the power of choice to its future driver. Its exterior design embodies the DNA of the brand with the 3-claw LED front headlights. The i-Cockpit comprising a head-up display, compact steering

wheel and touchscreen, further innovates with a 3D digital cluster designed to improve safety. Nearly 110,000 customers have ordered the new 208 since its launch in Europe in October, with 15 per cent of the orders for electric versions. In France, the new 208 was leading the registration rankings of

the PC market at the end of February. “I am particularly proud that the 208 has just won the 2020 Car of the Year prize," Jean-Philippe, CEO, said. "This trophy underlines the excellence of the work and great commitment of all the teams of the brand and the Groupe PSA. “It’s the first time that a ‘2 series’ has triumphed. Indeed, three Peugeot ‘Cars of the Year’ are currently on the road - the 3008, the 308, and now the new 208. The COTY 2020 legitimates the brand’s ‘power of choice’ strategy.” “From now on, our customers will be able to choose between the electric e-208 ‘Car of the Year’ and the (ICE) 208 ‘Car of the Year’. Peugeot now takes its place amongst the top three brands with the most awards in the Car of the Year history, enjoying six trophies. The New 208, named Car of the Year 2020, follows the SUV 3008.

THE LONSDALE PROJECT Despite being a pioneering scientist born in Newbridge in 1903, Kathleen Lonsdale’s name and legacy are curiously unknown by the Irish public. The Lonsdale Project celebrates her life, writings and adventures in x-ray diffraction, crystallography and war! A theatrical, playful and highly original production for audiences young and old, The Lonsdale Project delves into our relationship with science, with belief, and with ‘great thinkers’ who have shaped our lives today, and will shape our world, tomorrow. Created by Super Paua, it’s happening at Smock Alley Theatre in Temple Bar from March 1928. Tickets €12/10 from www. smockalley.com.

DUBLIN FRAGMENTS: THE PEARSON COLLECTION There’s a final chance to see the Irish Georgian Society’s 'Dublin Fragments: The Pearson Collection' curated by artist Peter Pearson this weekend. This exhibition that runs until Sunday, March 22, is a monument to Dublin at a particular moment in time in the last decades of the 20th century – a period of dramatic change on a widespread scale, where little of the built heritage was considered worth keeping. This presentation of architectural fragments and installations presents a dazzling display of Dublin craftsmanship. The exhibition is located at the City Assembly House on South William Street.
