RNLI rescues stranded tourists TWO tourists had to be rescued after they became stranded in a scenic area of North Dublin last week. Howth RNLI launched its Inshore Lifeboat on Tuesday, March 3 following reports that two people were stranded on rocks in Balscadden Bay. The RNLI pagers sounded at 1.58pm after a call was placed to the coastguard reporting that the tourists were stranded
on rocks at the base of the cliffs in the bay. Howth RNLI volunteer crewmembers launched the Inshore Lifeboat within 12 minutes of getting the call and proceeded to the area and quickly located the casualties at the base of the cliffs. The casualties were taken aboard the lifeboat and checked over and were both in good spirits, unharmed by the
incident and returned safely to shore at Howth Lifeboat Station. They confirmed they were tourists visiting the area and got caught out by the incoming tide while walking at the base of the cliffs. The wind was Force 3 and the sea state was calm at the time. Speaking following the call out, Killian O’Reilly, Howth RNLI Inshore lifeboat helm,
said: ‘”We were delighted to assist the tourists after they found themselves in difficulty. “They did the right thing and called for assistance and remained calm. As visitors to the area they were unfamiliar with the tides and location. “We were pleased to drop them back ashore safe and sound and hope they enjoy the remainder of their visit to Ireland.”

A NORTHSIDE woman proposed to her long term partner live on television on Leap Day. Maria Kelly, from Portmarnock, proposed to her boyfriend of seven years, Bryan Geraghty, live on ‘Ireland AM’ on February 29, which is traditionally a day when women propose to their partners. The couple met while working together in Dunnes Stores. “We used to sit back to back in the buying office, in head office,” Ms Kelly said. “It was a funny start to the relationship.” They now have three daughters, Cassia, Olivia and Layla and a house together. With the help of Virgin Media’s Ireland AM, Ms Kelly was able to plan a proposal which would be broadcast live. Ms Kelly’s family also knew of her plans so her two sisters were able to help keep Mr Geraghty occupied while their house was readied. ‘Ireland AM’ presenter Laura Woods was seen knocking on the door and pretending that Ms Kelly

room, where Ms Kelly was waiting on one knee with a balloon arrangement. She told the very surprised Mr Geraghty: “You've captivated me from day one. You interested me with your poker face and from day one you've excited me. We've shared memories, we've shared trips, we've even had children and we've made a beautiful home, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
When she asked him to do her the honour of being her husband, Mr Geraghty replied straight away with “absolutely”. The cameras captured the two of them hugging and laughing. They both said they were “shaking’ following the surprise. The proposal was also witnessed by their children. While planning the proposal, Ms Kelly told Northside People that she’s “a big romantic” and
loves big gestures. She said afterwards: “I was so calm that morning but the five minutes before it was about to happen, I was sick in my stomach.” Ms Kelly said that no date has yet been set for the wedding. “The only thing we’ve talked about is when we’re going to go ring shopping!” she added. The couple spent the rest of their day eating out and celebrating with their family and friends.

Next Government needs to prioritise children’s rights TANYA WARD Chief executive Children’s Rights Alliance
CHILD and family homelessness must be the number one priority for the next Government. Last week, the Children’s Rights Alliance published its Report Card 2020. This grades the Government’s performance on children’s rights in key areas such as housing, health, education, poverty, equality, early years and education. Addressing child and family homelessness must be an urgent priority for the next Government. Children now make up the largest population in homelessness, with child homelessness rising by a staggering 400 percent between 2014
and 2019. The outgoing Government consistently failed in this area, with the grade on this issue fluctuating from an E to an F over the past four years – the lowest grades awarded to any of the areas assessed. What we have witnessed since 2016 has been a grave social injustice. We are now facing a homelessness crisis that is depriving thousands of children of a decent childhood. The next Government must acknowledge this crisis for what it is and commit to build, to legislate and to plan with children and families in mind. In the 2020 Report Card, the Government is awarded an overall ‘C+’ grade for its performance on children’s rights issues over the past 12 months – up from a ‘C’ in 2019. The improved grade is due to the Government reaching its commitments across a number of key areas: • Educational Disadvantage: rising
from a ‘C’ grade in 2019 to ‘C+’ in 2020; • Primary Care: rising from ‘C+’ in 2019 to ‘B’ in 2020; • Subsidised and School-Age Childcare: rising from ‘C+’ in 2019 to ‘B’ in 2020; and • Refugee and Asylum-Seeking Children: rising from a ‘C ’ grade in 2019 to ‘C+’ in 2020. Over the past 12 months, we have seen some positive changes for children and young people. Budget 2020 went some way towards addressing the scale of child poverty we have in Ireland by extending the hot school meals programme. It also included a welcome commitment to trial a Free School Books Programme. Another positive development in the past year was the commencement of the new National Childcare Scheme. Much more work is needed to guarantee that every child in Ireland grows up healthily, happily and safely. Back to school costs continue
PHOTO POSED: BIGSTOCK to be a barrier to education for many children. Ireland has the third highest childcare costs in Europe with serious problems in staff pay and retention. The new Government must continue to invest heavily in this area. We are calling on the next Government to make childcare more affordable for parents by increasing investment and introducing price caps on fees. We also want to see free childcare introduced for lone parents. While there has been some improvement for refugee and asylum-seeking children, the reliance on inappropriate emergency accommodation is unacceptable and must stop. The Government must avoid institutional settings and invest in good quality, own-
door accommodation in local communities. The incoming Government needs to appoint HIQA to inspect refugee accommodation. The Government has produced new national standards for refugee reception accommodation and if they are implemented effectively, we could end direct provision as we know it. As well as child and family homelessness, the 2020 Report Card highlighted two other key areas in need of improvement: mental health and the rights of Traveller and Roma children. The outgoing Government has also recorded a poor performance year after year on commitments to Traveller and Roma children. That issue receives a ‘D’ grade this year.

Local college receives award for its lifesaving programme THE Irish Heart Foundation has presented a Northside school with a Special Recognition Award for training its students in the lifesaving skills of CPR. Donabate Community College is the third school in Dublin to receive the award, which recognises schools for their remarkable efforts in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) promotion and training. The award was presented as part of the Irish Heart Foundation’s CPR 4 Schools programme, which 73 percent of post-primary schools in Ireland are currently trained in. The charity is creating a generation of lifesavers by training post-primary school students around the country to perform CPR, use an AED in
cardiac emergencies and respond when someone is choking. Laura Hickey, Children and Young People Programme Manager at the Irish Heart Foundation, said: “Everyday 13 people in Ireland die from a cardiac arrest and schools are an ideal setting to educate young people in CPR and reduce the incidences of death from cardiac arrest. “Donabate Community College has done tremendous work in creating awareness and taking the fear out of lifesaving. “CPR is a lifesaving skill that everyone can learn, and this programme is available to every post primary school in Ireland, equipping young people with the skills and confidence to perform CPR.
“We would like to train more post-primary schools in Dublin and are encouraging teachers to attend our upcoming free training courses in their locality.” John Doyle, Deputy Principal at Donabate Community College, said staff and students at the college were thrilled to be recognised for its contribution in creating the next generation of lifesavers, with a Special Recognition Award. “We have really enjoyed delivering the programme to develop new lifesaving skills that can be used in every environment; at home, in school and in the community.” CPR 4 Schools is a free programme for post-primary schools and fits into the school curriculum. Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club completes renovation work A NORTHSIDE sports club recently celebrated the completion of key renovation work at its premises. Special guests and supporters, including Edel Currie of Dublin Port, Outgoing Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton, and Richard Nolan of Nolan’s Supermarket attended the official ribbon cutting ceremony at Clontarf Yacht and Boat Club. Club Commodore Aidan Cronin welcomed the guests and members to the event. “Our Club is 145-yearsold and while we value our history and tradition, it is also essential that we move with the times,” he said. “Over the past number of years it became increasingly apparent that our facilities were
not fit for purpose. “Our growing female membership had to contend with a limited number of showers and a subpar changing room. “Our regular visitors from the CRC and St Michael’s House, as well as other visitors to the club with extra needs or mobility challenges, had very limited facilities. “Yet we knew that making such improvements would be a huge undertaking for a volunteer run club with limited income.” The club was successful in applying for a Sports Capital Grant and then embarked on almost a year long fundraising programme with events and members contributing to make up the final shortfall. Commodore Cronin said: “Our members have been central to the successful delivery of

and ultimately the entire membership was critical to the success of the project as they fundraised and contributed to meeting the costs.” In addition to the
refurbishment of the women’s changing facilities, two chimney breasts had to be removed along with internal walls and new electrics and fire doors, fire alarm and
emergency lighting had to be installed to bring the building up to code. Commending Dublin Port and Nolan’s Supermarket for their support, the Commodore said: “As a volunteer-run club we operate on very tight budgets as we work to deliver the services for our members and our community. “That’s why we are so grateful for the support we receive on an ongoing basis from our friends and neighbours. “Dublin Port has been a longtime supporter of CY&BC and we are very grateful not only for the funding, but the practical support such as our excellent sign outside. “Nolan’s have been a consistent friend to CY&BC with their annual sponsorship in our club diary.
“This year, they facilitated the selling of our calendar with no profit and it was a massive fundraising success for us. We are very grateful for their support and look forward to a continued partnership. “I have to also say a special thank you to the elected reps who supported us in this application and throughout the year - now retired Finian McGrath, Cllr Damien O’Farrell, Sean Haughey TD, Cllr Deirdre Heney and Richard Bruton TD in particular.” “As we approach the sailing season, it is fantastic to see these improvements to our club and I am looking forward to seeing all the results of the hard work being enjoyed by members and visitors to our club.”

Balbriggan tunes up for big festival THE organiser of the inaugural Fingal International Festival of Voices, which takes place in Balbriggan from March 12-15, has committed to running the event for at least five years. Michael Dawson, founder and artistic director of the festival, said he has already settled on dates and begun planning for the next four years. “This is not a once-off event,” said Mr Dawson. “We already have the dates decided and ideas in place for the next editions of the festival.” The three-day festival will feature top choirs
from Ireland, the UK, Belarus and the US and is expected to attract hundreds of visitors to the town. Concerts will take place at locations including St George’s Church, Balbriggan Community Centre, St Peter and Paul’s Church, the Festival Pavillion and the Bracken Court Hotel. The event will celebrate the multicultural diversity of Ireland’s youngest town by providing a platform for individuals and communities to showcase their culture through storytelling and spoken word events.
Fingal Mayor Cllr Eoghan O’Brien welcomed the expected 2,000 local, national and international participants to Balbriggan. “The three day festival will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase Balbriggan on the international stage,” he said. Increasing the number of festivals and quality events in the town is one of 20 actions in 12 months identified in the Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Plan. Emer O’Gorman, Director of Economic, Enterprise and Tourism at Fingal County Council,
Blingmasters Barbershop Chorus, Malahide, will perform during the festival. said: “I am delighted that we are able to support this festival through our council-wide events fund and look forward to its many successes into the future.” The vast majority of events and activities will be free to attend. Only
the Grand Prix final of the choral competition will be ticketed. An event called ‘Candlelit Tales’ will breathe new life into Irish myths and legends at St George's Church and younger audiences can make archaeological discoveries
at ‘The Big Dig’. The festival will feature storytelling for children and adults, folk singing, workshops and talks from international experts, a barbershop quartet, a festival pavilion with food trucks, a busking competition and a singing
trail. Mr Dawson said he deliberately wanted the festival to celebrate diversity and build community through inclusion. For more information, visit www. fingalfestivalofvoices.com

New amenity opens in Sutton LOCALS in Sutton have received a boost following the official opening of a new leisure facility. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien opened the Boules/Petanque
Courts opened at Alden Park. Fingal Director of Operations David Storey, Deputy Cian O’Callaghan (SD), members of Age Friendly Fingal and enthusiastic boules
players tried out the courts on the day. Fingal County Council installed the courts as part of its ongoing commitment to provide high quality recreational facilities for all age groups.
Local resident and keen boules player, Tom Donnellan, initially approached Deputy O’Callaghan with a proposal for a boules court in an underutilised area of the park.

ave you ever walked into a room and felt instantly calm? Or maybe you felt slightly on edge? Whether we are aware of it or not, the colours we surround ourselves with have a massive effect on our subconscious mind. In fact, it’s the very reason fast food chains have bold and flashy colours that make us order more, and eat faster. Similarly, it’s also why hair salons and hospitals may have more subtle colours to make us feel more relaxed and at ease. We live in a world where we are constantly switched “on”. With the rapid rise of technology combined with our ever-busy lifestyles, it’s no wonder we find it hard to take a step back and actually breathe. However, there is one company that is trying to re-centre our thoughts and bring more stillness into our lives and that’s “Pantone”, the colour institution. Every year Pantone select a “colour of the year” that can often dictate interior trends for the year to follow. This year, Pantone have selected “19-4052 Classic Blue”. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on. Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication”. – Leatrice Eiseman, Executive director of the
Pantone Colour Institute. Colours can have a real impact on our feelings and moods within a household. If you’re the type of person that finds it hard to switch off in the evenings, or even find yourself a little overwhelmed, maybe “something borrowed and something blue” is exactly what the doctor ordered! After all, ”she wore blue, velvet” and not any other colour! To find out how you can add more blues into your life simply log onto: https://www.ezlivingfurniture. ie/
Mr Donnellan is a member of a boules club currently playing out of St Anne’s Park and realised that there was a need to have courts based nearer to home as many residents of Fingal were having to travel to St Anne’s Park to play. The facility is free to use and will be run on a ‘turn up and play’ basis. The game is one of the most inclusive activities available where people of all ages, gender, ability and fitness can participate equally together. Instructions for playing boules and petanque are included on an attractive wooden noticeboard on site. The courts are a wonderful addition to the park, helping to meet the recreational needs of the older population in line with the council’s Age Friendly 2018-2023 Strategy. Fingal’s Age Friendly Alliance is committed, through the strategy, to driving a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach which supports interventions that will significantly help to improve the quality of life of the current population of older people in Fingal and of future generations. Speaking at the opening, Mayor O'Brien said: “I am delighted to open this Boules/Petangue Court and can see that it will be hugely popular with both locals here in Sutton and enthusiasts from other areas of Fingal.”

Inspirational Debbie launches TEDx Talk Aoife O’Brien A NORTHSIDE woman has launched a TEDx Talk detailing her experiences from setting up a charity at her kitchen table over 20 years ago to having dinner with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Clontarf native Debbie Deegan was approached by TEDx to give a talk in Kingston Upon Thames after they heard about her charity work with orphan children in Russia. The resulting talk, ‘Mrs Deegan - President Putin will be seated to your right’, is a heartfelt insight into her experiences transforming how children in State care are treated in Russia that lead to her receiving the highest award ever presented to an Irish citizen in that country. Debbie’s experience started in 1998, after she met a child who had travelled to Ireland with the Chernobyl Children International charity. Shortly after, Debbie travelled to Russia to find the orphanage where the child lived. She was so shocked by the conditions that the children were living in she
was inspired to establish the charity ‘To Children With Love’ formerly known as ‘To Russia With Love.’ “We looked into huge bedrooms, old metal beds wedged into rows full of orphans, there was an overpowering smell of urine,” she said of the orphanage in her TEDx Talk. On the day she was to leave the orphanage Debbie kissed a young girl, with bruises on her face, goodbye. She told Debbie’s interpreter: “Tell Debbie I’ve never been kissed before.” A young boy gave her a note asking for her help to find his big brother and Debbie decided she had to do something to show these children they were loved and cared for. Over the last two decades the charity has dramatically changed the lives of over 5,000 orphaned children in one of Russia’s most desolate regions. Looking back on the past 20 years Debbie said she is so proud of everything they have achieved. “Ten years ago I would’ve said the fact that we were able to turn

PHOTO: TERRY MCMAHON a really grim orphanage into one of the best orphanages in the world was our biggest achievement,” she told Northside People. “15 years on I would have said we were absolutely stunned that we were going to be standing at college universities watching our children graduate. “20 years on which is now, I’m standing back looking at our original children with children
of their own, happily married in normal relationships, they have smashed all of our goals and expectations.” Despite the love and passion that Debbie has for her work and all of the children that they have taken into their “family”, she found doing the TEDx Talk a very daunting experience. “I wrote the speech, about 10 A4 pages, so I had to learn it off by rote the way you did in
school,” she said. “So because I learned it off I couldn’t remember what was coming next was even though it was my own story so I was very afraid that I would blank.” After 20 years’ successfully transforming the lives of orphaned children in Russia, Debbie said she will continue her work. “I’m married to it so I will stay involved with the children’s lives so there’s no getting out of it for me,

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Where The... Go: a children’s picture book written by Frae About The Author FRAE is an Australian who is living in Dublin with his wife and four-year-old daughter. Having been born in Scotland and brought up in South Africa and Australia he has been drawing, painting and creative from a very early age. Currently working in architecture, he has for a long time wanted to write and illustrate a children’s book, and the issue this book tackles created the perfect opportunity to do so. He is currently writing more books in the series as there are plenty more tough hurdles facing anyone raising a young child. This is Frae’s first picture book. On his website is a certificate from the character Abby which can be downloaded with the child and pacifier’s name inserted, congratulating them on the huge step they have taken. There is also a colouring page and a make your own pacifier page to help the child create their own memories of their pacifier.
THE concept for the book came about as a need, the need to assist my daughter in letting go of her pacifier, (hers was called Doddie). This was something we really struggled with, and after a visit to a local park we chanced upon a tree that children hung their pacifiers on to say goodbye. The tree was called the fairy tree and was covered in fairy doors and houses, as well as hundreds of pacifiers. It was then I came up with a story about a little girl called Abby whose best friend was her doddie. And telling her this story over a number of weeks it worked. The story revolves around their strong friendship and Abby’s reliance on her pacifier. The doddie in turn had made friends with the other pacifiers in Abby’s play group but over time notices some of these friends have vanished. When he begins to wonder where they have gone, an owl he has befriended tells him he knows the secret. The owl takes doddie to the fairy tree where he discovers all his friends live in a magical land inside the tree. He is told, however, by the fairy who guards this paradise that the only way he can
get in is if Abby hangs him on the tree and leaves without crying and as a reward the fairy will give Abby a gift for letting go. In the weeks after discovering this, doddie becomes more and more sad as he realises that Abby will not let him go. It is then the owl returns with some magic dust which once sprinkled allows Abby to dream of this land in the tree and to see how happy the doddies are living there. Through time and through these dreams Abby then decides it is time to let doddie go. So with her mum she heads off to the park with her bravely saying her goodbyes without crying. She finds it hard at first but the present given to her by the fairy helps her feel better. Abby keeps memories of her doddie on her wall so she will always remember her best friend. The illustrations are bold and bright to keep the interest of the child and with the story being read over a period of time it slowly lets the child understand the concept of letting go. The book has also been designed in a way to allow the parent to fill in the particular name given to their child’s pacifier.

Every season Sinéad and Rick select eight titles, ranging from the thrilling to the hilarious, with something suitable for every taste. This season’s titles include tales of family, friendship and some interesting takes on the world around us. Sinéad Moriarty said: “This selection shows some of the most exciting upcoming Irish and international literary talent and I’m excited to share these books with everyone.” Broadcaster, Rick O’Shea, added: “I am delighted to share my Must Reads with the nation. The books I have chosen will have something for every reader.” The eight titles selected
as ‘Sinéad and Rick’s Must Reads’ feature enthralling, jaw-dropping and heart-warming titles with a range of Irish and international authors including: ‘The Dutch House’ by Ann Patchett. This has all the ingredients of a dark fairy tale - the beautiful house, the distant father, the disappeared mother, and the cruel stepmother and stepsisters. The novel is narrated by Danny and is a sweeping account that covers almost five decades of their lives. It’s an incredible story about an obsession with a house and a fractured family, but most of all, it’s a book about the powerful bond between siblings. A book described as essential reading.

Remember: it’s ok to ask for help Aoibhe Conway SOME days the walls may feel like they are closing in on you. You may feel that there are so many worries and negative thoughts going through your mind at the same time that it feels like a swarm of bees are invading your happiness. Your wellbeing and your mental health are really important. By opening up and talking about how you feel, it can help a lot. Remembering that it is okay not to feel okay can be a game changer, as some people don’t believe that it is okay to talk about how they feel. But it is 100 per cent normal. This is why three words are really important to ask everyone in your life: “Are You Ok?” These three words take less than a minute to type and could mean the whole world to someone
It’s okay to ask for help. who may be feeling down. It opens the conversation about mental health and let's others know that you care about their wellbeing. I believe it is necessary to check up on the special people in your life and make sure they are doing okay because sometimes you just don’t know what
is going on in someone else's mind. There is always someone to turn to even when you feel like the world is against you and that no one cares about you. Everyone does because you are AMAZING. You are unique and you are enough just the way you
are. Don’t ever forget that. Turn to someone you trust. That may be a family member, a friend, a colleague, a teacher, or maybe many of the incredible helplines that are available. Please do not bottle up your feelings inside. This is not good. Talk. Talk to your friends about how you feel and ask them if they are okay too. Let's make talking about our feelings and mental health normal and just as easy as having a conversation about designer shoes or a movie you recently watched. Ask the question: "Are you okay?" DCU Mercy are crowned champions DCU Mercy were crowned the 2019/20 Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League champions after running out 81-58 point winners over Maree in the penultimate game of the season. Mark Ingle’s charges were pushed all the way by the Galway outfit in the fixture played at DCU. It was a stunning third quarter display from American Meredith Burkhall that ultimately put them on the road to glory. Burkhall dominated under the boards and headed to the free throw line on numerous occasions in the period, slotting home 12 points in the quarter, with 10 of these coming from the free throw line.
A close first half saw Maree get the better of proceedings early in the first quarter, with Fiona Scally, Carol McCarthy and Claire Rockall dominating the scoring to edge them into an early lead. Good play from DCU’s Ashley Russell, Burkhall and Rachel Huijsdens saw the Dubliners claw back the lead though, to trail by just two at the end of the first quarter, 14-16. An extremely close second quarter followed, with Sarah Woods, Huijsdens and Burkhall all on-form for DCU, but Rockall and Scally along with good scores from Maggie Byrne kept Maree with the hosts every step of the way to tie the game up at 31 points apiece at the half.
Burkhall hit her stride in the third, dominating the offensive boards and picking up numerous fouls to put Maree in foul trouble. DCU Mercy led 55-45 going into the last quarter, a lead they were never going to relinguish. Speaking afterwards, DCU captain Sarah Woods said: “We’re just elated. We came in with a job to do. “We know how good Maree are, they beat us in Galway and we knew it would be a really tough game. I’m just so happy to be holding the trophy now and to be finally able to say we’re league winners.” Also in the division, UCC Glanmire defeated Pyrobel Killester 96-83 in an overtime thriller in Clontarf.

On a public waiting list? Need access to private healthcare but have no medical insurance? Globally, healthcare is funded either through Government public systems or privately. Private medical insurance is the traditional and more established way of funding healthcare privately. Those who cannot afford the cost of private medical insurance will normally rely upon the public health system - or become ‘self-payers’ and privately fund their own treatment or diagnosis. However, compared to those with private
Letsbuyhe medical insurance, self-payers are poorly served in terms of innovation and customer service. There is an absence of products, limited access to medical treatment options online and/or consumer agents, which are all common in other markets. LETSBUYHEALTHCARE is setting out to change that for self-payers of healthcare. LETSBUYHEALTHCARE is a booking website for people to access pay-as-you-go private healthcare.

Letsbuyhealthcare is for people without private health insurance or access to a medical card who will now be able to access private care online when they need it in a simple, timely manner. So, rather than relying on the public health system, which often means waiting, there is now another way for those who wish to take more personal control of their treatment timeline.
If finance is required, there are also loan application website links to the credit union of your choice (and/or one of the major banks) available on the Letsbuyhealthcare website. The website (letsbuyhealthcare.com) provides information such as waiting times, how it works, what you need and prices for healthcare treatments - making it simple for those who wish to book and self-pay for private health.

You can decide to accompany your booking with an online payment (that goes directly to the provider) or, if you prefer, you can just book without any online payment and then instead pay when you attend for a diagnosis consultation or treatment. Either way, once you book, the medical provider will then contact you, typically within 24 hours, to arrange an appointment that suits you. e h t f o G DO WEEK The Dublin People Newspaper has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for lost and abandoned dogs. Top dog this week is Enzo - an extremely affectionate three-year-old crossbreed who just loves rubs and cuddles. He is instantly friendly with everyone he meets but can be a bit picky with other dogs, preferring doggie pals who are calm and don't interact too much. In his past life, he was quite the accomplished escape artist, so his future adopters will need to be mindful of this and keep a very close eye on him. Although his sweet, friendly nature would make him an ideal family pet he is quite strong and could potentially knock over very small children in his enthusiasm. If you have room in your heart and home for Enzo, then contact Dogs Trust on 018791000.
Give a Dog a Home Today! Phone us on 01 8791000 Dogs Trust is based in Finglas, just off exit 5 on the M50. Map and directions can be found on their website at www.dogstrust.ie. Pricing has been announced for diesel and petrol models with diesel units now arriving in dealership forecourts with petrol powertrains due later in March. Retailing from €23,900, plus delivery related charges for the Active 1.2 PureTech petrol 100bhp model and from €25,900 plus delivery for the Active 1.5 BlueHDi 100bhp model, the full electric e-2008 SUV pricing will be announced closer to launch, this April. Des Cannon, Managing Director at Gowan Distributors, said: “The stunning all-new 2008 SUV has real road presence and I have full confidence it will gain new custom, even in its
very competitive B SUV segment. “Our philosophy of offering customers the option to choose the model, then choose the powertrain – petrol, diesel or electric – without compromising on space, technology, looks or driving sensations, is striking a chord with customers. “We strongly believe this approach allows customers to opt for the powertrain that best suits their exact needs.” Sporting a striking, robust front face and strong lighting signature, the new 2008 SUV is longer and wider than its predecessor model. Measuring 4.3m long, 1.77m wide and 1.55m high, the all-new 2008 SUV holds a maximum capacity of 1,467 litres in the boot, even with an electric battery in place.
The battery is positioned under the floor of the all-new e-2008 SUV, so there’s no compromise to space. The diesel offering is a 1.5 BlueHDi 100bhp 6-speed manual. The e-2008 SUV, the brand’s first fully electric SUV, is powered by a 50kWh battery and 136hp motor to provide a range up to 310kms from a full charge, under WLTP testing. There is standard specification across the range, from Active trim, includes 16” alloy wheels, air conditioning,
six airbags, ESP with Hill Start Assist, rear parking sensors with rear view camera, eco LED headlights and front fog lamps. Customers will also benefit from the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit, featuring a compact multifunction steering wheel, heads up instrument panel and touchscreen, while Bluetooth, Mirror Screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also standard across all versions. Pet parking hates RESEARCH by mobility solutions specialist, easytrip, Ireland’s only electronic parking and tolling tag provider, has revealed that one in 10 motorists find parking to be a stressful experience. While parking availability can determine what parking style a
motorist must use, the research also highlighted certain preferences with 43 per cent of respondents selecting parallel parking over 36 per cent who chose perpendicular parking. Parking scenarios can be tricky to navigate, and other drivers’ behaviour
can have a huge impact on it, increasing the stress levels of motorists. When asked what motorists found to be the most annoying parking habits of other drivers the following where revealed as the top five: 1. Hogging two parking spaces (38 per cent)
2. Parking in a disabled space when they had no disabled sign and weren’t a disabled driver (27 per cent) 3. Parking too close to your car (15 per cent) 4. Blocking you in so you can’t get out of your parking space (5 per cent) 5. Blocking an entrance

so you can’t get into your home or place of work (4 per cent) Commenting on the research, CEO of easytrip Ireland, Colin Delaney, said: “While advanced technology has made parking hassle free for many there will be times that parking becomes stressful. “This could be down to parking preference spaces not being available or other drivers’ behaviour. “We would encourage drivers to take their time when parking and seek out a parking space they are comfortable with parking in.” He added: “It’s important to be considerate of other motorists’ needs. “And this includes parking between the white lines, not on them. “Not parking in a space that is not dedicated for their use, whether that be a disabled, family or electric vehicle space, and not parking on double yellow lines.”

COLOUR is often the element that brings your home’s interior style to life. So, this spring sees leading interior design house, Neptune, look closely at how colour affects the look and feel of a room. Cue a fascinating research journey that led the team through the grand entrance halls of stately homes, to country house hotels and as far away as Belgium with its muted palette of ochre, creamy neutrals and muddy browns. Taking their cues from the Belgian way of thinking about light, shade, texture and a pared back palette, Neptune has introduced a new shade worth its weight in gold – Saffron. and 20th century decorators, Saffron is a true yellow. Saffron has been inspiring creatives for centuries, as far back as 1200 when it was first recorded as being used as a decorative colour. The design team’s interpretation of saffron is far more liveable than the original, orangehued spice shade. Yes, it’s vibrant, but it lifts a scheme and instantly refreshes it. Said to be the colour of energy and enthusiasm, Saffron’s arrival this spring adds a dose of lifeaffirming eccentricity to their more muted neutral fabrics. Created to work perfectly with colours in the existing Neptune palette, notably the deep, dark blue of Ink and the off-white warmth

The highest rate of repayment on the average 25 year mortgage as at Q4 2019 is €1,346, while mortgage holders on the lowest rate are paying €1,056 per month. The Index is based on the average mortgage drawn down for new lending in both the first-time buyer and second-hand mover markets as at Q4 2019, currently €242,175. The doddl Index looks
at the total number of switcher transactions per quarter as a percentage of all home loan transactions, excluding Buy To Let mortgages, to give an accurate picture of principal private dwelling house credit. Compiled by impartial mortgage switching experts doddl.ie, the Index highlights the differential
between the lowest and highest non-discounted interest rates on the market – and the potential savings available. And this has increased again with the introduction of a new 2.2 percent five-year fixed rate onto the market in January – more than half the highest available rate of 4.5 percent.
“While mortgage switching is traditionally associated with reducing interest rates and lowering repayments, a huge benefit of switching can be to reduce the term of the mortgage,” said doddl.ie Managing Director Martina Hennessy. “With banks now offering mortgages that expire when the borrower

is 70, and terms of up to 35 years, many people currently have mortgages which will not be paid off until after they retire. “For example, a couple who took out their mortgage five years ago, on a 35-year term, currently repay €1,520 per month on a standard variable rate of 4.5 percent. “If they were to switch their mortgage balance of €300,000 to a five-year fixed rate of 2.2 percent then their repayments would drop to €1,139 per month, meaning a saving of €381 per month or €22,860 over five years. “However, by continuing to make the same mortgage repayment on the 2.2 percent rate, they could decrease their term from 30 years to just over 20 years – saving thousands in interest based on their reduced term. “We are finding a lot of clients in the 45-plus age range are now opting for this pathway when switching their mortgage.” While the doddl.ie Index measures the average savings available nationwide, the potential gap widens significantly in the country’s prime property locations. The average homeowner in a 3 bed semi in Dublin city and county could potentially save €418.25 per month, or €5,019 per annum, based on 90 percent finance over 25 years on an average house price of €396,450. The rate of mortgage switching has more than trebled in the past four years, the Index shows. Mortgage switching transactions represented 14 percent of home loan lending at year end 2019, this percentage up from five percent in Q4 2015 when the market for mortgage switching started to open up again. All lenders offer mortgage switching packages which cover the cost of switching and in some cases up to three percent of the mortgage back in cash. Taking the average mortgage at December 2019 of €242,175 this cashback amount would equate to €7,265.

Age is no limit for employees at B&Q, workshop hears EMPLOYERS, who attended ‘The Future of Recruitment’ workshop organised by the Northside Enterprise & Employment Group, in conjunction with B&Q, and hosted by Baldoyle Training Centre, learned an interesting statistic at the event. B&Q, the home improvement and garden living retailer, has no retirement age for employees, the oldest of whom is 82! Those who work with jobseekers attended the event where they were provided with up-to-date insights and information on the recruitment process, and in particular, how B&Q recruit. Michelle Mahon, B&Q’s HR Manager, and Sandra Darcy, Unit Manager, facilitated the workshop which outlined the recruitment
process from online applications, telephone, video interviews, Situation Judgement Test and instore assessment. “Recruitment is changing and the CV is not necessarily the calling card anymore,” said Ms Mahon. “It’s people’s attitude and behaviours are what matter. B&Q hire for Will over the Skill as we can teach a skill.” Michelle and Sandra D’Arcy gave examples of how to be successful and provided tips on being effective when applying. Sandra spoke of her progression from Customer Advisor to Unit Manager. They provided information on the added benefits of working for B&Q such as the in-house training provided along with external training and more about their apprenticeships. “The recruitment

with jobseekers to ensure we’re giving them the most current advice and support.” Sharon McCarthy, Business Relations
Manager at Baldoyle Training Centre, opened the event and provided a tour of the centre afterwards. “Baldoyle Training Centre was
delighted to host the Future of Recruitment event,” said Ms McCarthy. “The presentations by Michelle and Sandra of B&Q really highlighted
how important it is for those working with jobseekers to be familiar with current trends in the fast-changing recruitment environment.”
Campaign inspires engineering talent TRANSPORT Infrastructure Ireland played a leading role in inspiring Ireland’s future engineering talent by engaging with over 550 students in North Dublin during STEPS Engineers Week 2020. STEPS Engineers Week is a campaign held annually to promote engineering as a career and the importance of the profession to Ireland. This year’s event took place from February 29 to March 6. The initiative was coordinated by Engineers Ireland's STEPS programme and supported by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and other leading industry bodies. During Ireland’s largest celebration of engineering in the community, engineers from Transport Infrastructure Ireland engaged with eight schools along the MetroLink route to showcase to students the role of engineers and to highlight the importance of site safety and the environment through activities, presentations

At Our Lady of Victories Boys’ National School in Ballymun, over 200 students participated in Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Engineers Week celebrations and activities. Linda Carroll, Stakeholder Communications Coordinator, said: “Transport Infrastructure
Ireland’s engineers will be central to the success of the MetroLink project and the future of Ireland’s sustainable transport network. “As a strategic partner of the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, Engineers Week 2020 is a vital initiative to inspire Ireland’s future engineering talent
pipeline. “We’re delighted to work with primary and secondary school pupils throughout Engineers Week to showcase the role of TII engineers who will be central to bringing the MetroLink project to fruition over the coming years.” Caroline Spillane, Director General of
Engineers Ireland, said: “We estimate that over 5,000 new jobs will be created in the engineering sector this year, so it is absolutely crucial that industry works with the education sector to make technical areas like engineering appealing and stimulating to our students right across the education spectrum.”

A few things worth checking out this week
Pageant on the Plaza: Ballymun
A joint collaboration between Dublin City Council, Ballymun Communities and St Patrick’s Festival, Pageant on the Plaza: Ballymun is a fabulous show outdoors on Civic Plaza taking place on Sunday, March 15 at 2pm. It’s a taster for the St Patrick’s Day parade in the city centre the following Tuesday and it features a section of the final pageant plus one of the visiting international marching bands, Morrison’s Academy Scottish Pipe Band. Expect a vibrant whirlwind of glittering colour, entrancing choreography and bombastic tunes as the audience gets a rare ‘sneak peek’ of what’s to come.
Abair is a four-day program of traditional singing and storytelling events exploring the oral folk traditions of Ireland. There’s a broad range of intimate, unplugged performances, each highlighting the richness and beauty of the Irish singing and storytelling traditions still preserved and practiced to the present day. The events at Axis Ballymun, the Rediscovery Centre and Ballymun Civic Buildings on Main Street will also feature a ‘songs from the floor’ session, giving audience members a chance to provide a song or story of their own, relevant to the theme of ‘treasures’. Search ABAIR: Ballymun at www. stpatricksfestival.ie for tickets and details.
ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
TREASURES OF IRISH FOOD
Join half a million Dubliners and visitors and lose yourself in a whirlwind of glittering colours and entrancing choreography. Marvel at the incredible feats of design and engineering, and sing and cheer to a cacophony of joyous sounds! Hopefully, the rain holds off. It starts at midday.
From a truly Irish welcome to a hands on workshop, if you love spuds this event at Airfield Estate on Saturday, March 14 from 10.30am to 2.30pm is for you! A guide will take you through a little history of the potato, and why it became such an important part of the diet in Ireland. Then it’ll be time to wear some wellies and head out into the garden where you will get to plant your very own Irish potato. You will then stroll through the food gardens in to the demonstration kitchen for some spud treats. See www. stpatricksfestival.ie for tickets and details.
Running over four days (March 14-17), Custom House Quay will come alive for St Patrick’s Festival with waltzers, bumper cars and carousels. Dare to be suspended upside down, turned over or whisked through the air. A firm festival favourite, the funfairs will light up the city with colourful carnival fairgrounds.
Starting this weekend, Merrion Square will be transformed into a bustling St Patrick’s Festival Village, with four days of fantastic events, fun adventures and glorious food! Head along and enjoy Céilí Mór, circus and science shows, children’s readings, live music, games, street theatre, the food village and more.
LAVENDER WALK This is a unique tour of historic gay Dublin hosted by well-known civil rights activist and historian, Tonie Walsh, exploring the socio-cultural and political gay life of the city. Expect two hours of education, illumination and possibly a little titillation. It’s taking place at 12.45pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (March 14-16), beginning at Trinity College front square. The cost is €10.
THE Ballad Tour is an interactive journey through time, space, song and rhyme chronicling the history of Irish music and Dublin City in a simple, laid back and good humoured style, led by balladeer, mummer and storyteller Seán Fitzgerald. It’s happening at 11.50pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (March 14-16) with the tour starting from the back of Smock Alley Theatre, Essex Street West/Cow’s Lane. It costs €12.
