URGENT FOSTERING APPEAL-LOCAL CHILDREN NEED YOUR HELP! Local TD in leadership bid Aoife O’Brien A NORTHSIDE TD is bidding to become the next leader of the Labour Party. Deputy Aodhán Ó Ríordáin (inset), who won a seat in Dublin Bay North in the general election, is battling with Alan Kelly TD to replace Brendan Howlin. Deputy Ó Ríordáin said his leadership would prioritise

workers’ rights and establish a legal right to be represented by a trade union. Speaking at the launch of his campaign in Sheriff Street, he said Labour has always been Ireland’s party for progressive change but “that message

didn’t cut through in the 2020 election”. As leader, he vowed to rebuild that reputation for progressive change by legislating “to enshrine in law the right for all workers to be represented by a union for the purposes of collective bargaining”. “If this is deemed unconstitutional, either by the Attorney General or the Supreme Court, we will build

a movement in support of a referendum to give people the right to be represented by a trade union,” he said. Deputy Ó Ríordán also said that his leadership would create an agenda to “end failed market-driven polices for health, housing and childcare”. Instead his policies would deliver a series of ‘people’s budgets’ that go beyond economic

performance to deliver sustainable economic equality. “People in Ireland are hurting because, no matter how hard they work, they can’t give their children the start they want to,” he said. “The younger generation travels further to work longer hours in insecure jobs, and they feel trapped in expensive rented

accommodation. “Our older generation is living and working longer, with ever fewer able to save enough for a decent retirement.” All Labour Party members are eligible to vote in the contest to replace Deputy Howlin, who resigned as Labour leader following the general election, and the poll will take place on April 3.

New Dublin Mayor aims to make city more accessible Aoife O’Brien DUBLIN’S new Lord Mayor will prioritise making the capital a more accessible city for people with disabilities during his term in office. Cllr Tom Brabazon (FF), who represents the Donaghmede Local Electoral Area (LEA), was

elevated to the top after the previous Lord Mayor, Deputy Paul McAuliffe, was elected as a Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin NorthWest during last month’s general election. Cllr Brabazon, who has decided to place increasing accessibility high on his agenda, travelled to the Access

Cities Awards in Breda in the Netherlands last year while he served as Deputy Lord Mayor. Breda was awarded the Access City Award for 2019 and Cllr Barbazon described being there as “a real eye opener on how a city can make all of its services, both public and private, accessible to all of its citizens regardless of their physical or mental abilities”. “We had a wheelchair user come to us in the local area committee about two years ago and

he was really frustrated that in order to use the DART service he had to ring up a day in advance to get a ramp put down to enable him to get into the DART station,” Cllr Barbazon said. “This removes all spontaneity from a person's life. “If they get a phone call in the morning to go for a job interview, well they have to say, I’m sorry I’m a wheelchair user, I can’t get a ramp put down until tomorrow. It removes opportunities from people's lives.”

Cllr Tom Brabazon, the new Dublin Lord Mayor. Mayor Brabazon said that during his four months in office (the

one-year mayoral term ends in June) he will bring awareness to this issue and meet with the City Access Officer to discover where the worst affected areas are. Mayor Brabazon faced criticism before his election for controversial comments he made in the Northside People on the subject of women in politics, in 2015. At the time, he wrote: "We should want real women with real life experience of the education system, the

workplace, childbirth, childcare, managing money in tight situations and general life." Cllr Brabazon conceded that they were “ill-chosen words”. “It was bad judgment on my part at the time and I accept that,” he said. "I withdrew the remarks and I apologised for any hurt caused to anybody at the time.” A Green Pary councillor on Dublin City Council will replace Mayor Brabazon when his short term in office ends.

Another setback for Dublin cyclists CIAN GINTY Editor IrishCycle.com www.irishcycle.com

THE LIFFEY Cycle Route was adopted in the Dublin City Development Plan 2011-2017 with the promise that a continuous and segregated cycle route would be built within the time of the plan. But the project has suffered many setbacks and, late last year, it was

confirmed that the route is delayed yet again and now not expected to open until at least 2024. That’s why IrishCycle.com started the LiffeyCycle.com petition which calls on the council to trial a cycle path on Dublin’s quays in 2020, and then look to build a wider quick-build cycle network. Over 4,400 people have signed the LiffeyCycle.com petition and, on the back of this, councillors looked for a trial of the Liffey Cycle Route. But what the NTA and Dublin City Council officials have now proposed is far from a trial of a route - and far from safe. People cycling in Dublin already

A computer image of the proposed Liffey Cycle Route. have cycle lanes which end at bus stops and junctions. What the council is calling “interim measures” will continue this and likely make things more dangerous at junctions. Under these interim measures for the quays, people cycling will still have to mix with buses at bus stops; mix with buses and taxis in sections of bus lanes; and, at junctions, there will still be conflict with left turning traffic. Many people are quick to say that “something is better than nothing” but that’s not always the case with cycle route design. There was a similar situation in London a number of years ago. Unsafe

stop-start segregated cycle paths were installed without dealing with the conflict areas like junctions and bus stops. The result was that cycle routes looked more attractive, but the conflict remained - or worsened - and people died. It is senseless for Dublin to be making the same mistakes there’s too much at stake. Councillors need to have vision and implement a trial which is continuously segregated along the quays, even if this means disrupting cars on the north quays. Compromising on cycling safety just to maintain the same number of cars on the quays is pointless.

Cars are already seriously hampering the operation of the bus network and Luas Green Line and there are more buses and more trams on the way. Something has to give. Cities all around the world of different sizes - some with fewer public transport options than Dublin - have shown that city centres become better places when you reduce the number of cars. The sky doesn't fall in. The opposite is true and cities become more attractive places to live, work and do business in. For the people who need to drive, there would still be ample routes to reach car parks and other locations.

An artist’s impression of the Old Courthouse, Howth.

Refurbishment of historic structure begins in Howth AN historic Northside structure is set to get a makeover. A refurbishment of the Old Courthouse in Howth on Harbour Road is underway and is set to continue over the next few months. Fingal County Council’s Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development Department has appointed Tolmac Construction Ltd as the main contractor for the refurbishment. The work started on site in early January and it is expected to take six months to complete. The building is a

protected structure in a prominent site at the junction of Harbour Road and Church Street in the town. The refurbishment will allow for greater public use of the building with improved access for the public. Following the completion of works, the Fingal Tourism Tourist information office will be relocated from an existing temporary cabin on Harbour Road and the main hall will be retained as a flexible space for community use. A significant element of the work involves forming a new entrance

courtyard to the western side to accommodate ramped access and allow for universal access to the building. The new landscaped entrance courtyard will provide an elevated amenity space with seating overlooking the harbour area. Emer O’ Gorman, Director of the Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development Department, said: “Fingal County Council continues to invest in the heritage of the county and the refurbishment of the Old Courthouse in Howth will provide a restored space for the

community.” Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said the refurbishment is welcome news and is much needed for such an important historic site. “It is also great to see that it will remain an important community space to use for the residents of Howth as well as a central spot for tourist information,” he said. AnnMarie Farrelly, chief executive of Fingal County Council, said the refurbishment work is another example of the council’s continued commitment to investing in the heritage of Fingal.

boards. Gardaí were alerted to the break-in after a carpenter who had been carrying out work there arrived early that morning, opened the shutters and saw O'Connor looking out at him through the window. Garda Chloe Hurst told Derek Cooney BL, prosecuting, that there was no other exit from the pub, apart from a locked side door. Gardaí searched the attic space after noting that a table had been stacked onto chairs directly under a large hole in the ceiling. O'Connor was ultimately found there lying flat on his back. He was arrested but was too drunk to be interviewed initially. He made no admissions when later questioned. O'Connor, of Whitworth Place, Drumcondra, pleaded guilty at Dublin

Circuit Criminal Court to burglary at McGrath's Pub on February 28, 2019. He has 103 previous convictions. Garda Hurst agreed with Pieter Le Vert BL, defending, that although his client was “clearly in a state of intoxication”, he did not cause any trouble for arresting gardaí. Mr Le Vert said his client had both a chaotic and challenging childhood which resulted in him attempting suicide as a young teenager. Judge Melanie Greally noted that O'Connor had gained access by causing substantial damage to the roof and ceiling of the building. She accepted it had been his intention to steal alcohol and cash. She sentenced O'Connor to three years in prison but suspended the final nine months on strict conditions.

The Grove, The Asgard, The Summit, The Pier House, and The Deer Park. However, it was in the late ‘70s that the idea of an angling centre as a home for the club was first mentioned. Under the chairmanship of Howth SAC’s first President, Michael O’Leary, a series of fundraising campaigns, including race nights, Lotto, American nights, Christmas fairs, auctions and its biggest regular fundraiser, the Howth Strawberry Fair, were organised. The club is also indebted to businesses including Chadwicks, Pharmacare, Cantrell and Cochrane, Wella, Green Isle, Abbey Life and EBS Sutton who all generously supported, through sponsorship, the competitions, boat and shore. The competitions organised by the club were the Howth Open which was held during Howth Festival week and the Rush Open. However, the competition most synonymous with the club, was the Midsummer Night’s Madness, a beach competition, held on the Saturday nearest to June 21 every year. Through the good offices of FAS, the

members’ dream of having their own angling centre became a reality with the official opening of the premises by Minister Michael Woods in 1993. The centre is a monument to the progressive thinking, ceaseless determination and countless hours of hard work by successive committee and members of the club. The clubhouse is ideally situated on Howth Pier. It has full bar facilities, function room, kitchen and designated external heated smoking area. The building also houses two of the club’s three boats. The third boat is moored in Howth Harbour. The boats consist of two 16′Strikeliners, both equipped with 30 HP engine, GPS, Radio and Fishfinder and one 19′ Fastworker with a 100 HP engine and equipped with GPS, Radio and Fishfinder.

Howth Sea Angling organises both shore and boat competitions throughout the year and always welcomes new members. If you would like to become a member, visit its website www.howthsac.net/ membership-application/ and complete an online application form.

On Bank Holiday Monday, June 1, The Last Ever Tour From Toots and the Maytals has been confirmed with special guests The Selector and Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Droop Lion and Captain Accident. One of the most groundbreaking bands of the 90’s, Suede are set to return to Dublin off the back of their eighth studio album ‘The Blue Hour’ - the final part of the triptych of albums recorded by the band since they reformed with ‘Bloodsports’ (2013) and ‘Night Thoughts’ (2016). Currently touring their classic album 'Coming Up', the legendary Britpop act established themselves as one of the UK’s biggest and most important rock bands in the early nineties with their debut album 'Suede', followed by 'Dog Man Star', 'Coming Up', 'Head Music' and 'A New Morning'. There was also a catalogue of hit singles including 'Animal Nitrate', 'The Beautiful Ones', 'Trash', 'She's In Fashion' and ‘The Wild Ones'. Joining Suede will be Peter Hook and The Light. The English rock band, fronted by Peter Hook, former bassist and co-founder for Joy Division and New Order, has been touring for eight years and performing songs from his previous bands. Live favourites Ash, who are celebrating a career spanning 25 years which included two number one albums and top 10 singles, are sure to deliver a jam-packed performance filled with hits including 'Girl From Mars', 'Burn Baby Burn', 'Shining Light, 'A Life Less Ordinary' and 'Candy' for their fans. Ash released ‘Best Of Teenage Wildlife: 25 Years of Ash’ in February of this year. On Sunday, May 31, it is the turn of Supergrass, who recently kicked off the first of their three sold out Irish dates as part of their 25th anniversary tour. They announced their return to

Arts festivals, along with two nights at Dublin’s Pepper Canister Church. With ‘Curious Eyes & Ears’, the band produced a multi-faceted kids’ show that demonstrated the foundations of music theory. They are back to kick off the campaign for their debut album (set to drop in 2021) with a headline show in the newly renovated Opium in Dublin on April 25.

New figures reveal slip in the number of used car imports USED car imports saw a 26.4 per cent decline in January compared to January 2019, new figures reveal. According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), there were 6,623 used car imports this year compared with 9,003 in January 2019. Their Motor Industry Review Update 2020 shows new cars registrations for January are down 3.5 per cent (31,251) when compared to January 2019 (32,370). Light Commercial vehicles (LCV) are up 2.1 per cent (5,666) compared to January last year (5,548). HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) registrations are showing an increase of 8.8 per cent (385) in comparison to January 2019 (354).

Used cars sales are down for the start of this year. Despite a decline in new car registrations, an important stat of note was the reduction in CO2 emissions. The average CO2 emissions

(108.33g/km) relating to a new car sold in January 2020 reduced by 5.8 per cent on the comparison (115.04g/km) to the same time last year.

Diesel continues to remain the most popular engine type (42.1 per cent) following by petrol (39.6), and hybrid (13.6 per cent) which gained

a significant increase in market share along with electric (2.9 per cent) and plug-in (1.8 per cent). New electric car registrations increased with 898 registered in January 2020, compared to 799 in January 2019. The SIMI Review highlights that the Irish economy will perform strongly in 2020. This should be supportive of consumer spending. However, the Irish consumer is still behaving in a relatively cautious manner. Personal spending power remains under pressure from increasingly expensive big-ticket spending items such as rents, mortgage repayment, health insurance and dwelling insurance. Apart from the economic aspects, there are a number of non-

economic factors that are likely to be influential in 2020. Commenting on the new vehicle registrations figures, Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General said: “January is the most important selling month for new cars. In this regard, it is very disappointing to see a reduction in new car sales compared to January last year, the fourth consecutive year in which there has been a fall. “On a more positive note, there has been a reduction of nearly 6 per cent in the average CO2 emissions from new cars registered in January, underlining the industry’s commitment to reducing emissions from new cars. “The industry is fully committed to further significant reductions in

emissions in the years ahead. “New cars ultimately displace the oldest most environmentally damaging cars in the national fleet and in order for Ireland to benefit fully from these technology improvements the new car market needs to be much stronger than it currently is and Government policy should support this.” January also saw a significant decline in used imports, and while it may be too early to tell, the introduction of the NOx charge on January 1 appears to have reduced demand for older used imports. Jim Power, Economist and author of the SIMI Report, added: “The economics will in theory be supportive of new car registrations in 2020.”

Car buyers beware! CARTELL.IE reports that the proportion of vehicles offered for sale (across all years) with finance outstanding is 18.3 per cent – up from 16.6 per cent in December 2018 and 11.5 per cent in January 2017. These are the highest levels that Cartell has recorded. Cartell.ie also reports that more vehicles for certain key registration years are being offered for sale with finance outstanding than in 2018. From a sample of over 5,906 vehicles offered for sale and checked via the Cartell.ie website in 2019, the figures show that more than 40 per cent of two-year-old vehicles are offered for sale with finance outstanding. In the case of one-yearold vehicles the levels of vehicles offered for sale with finance outstanding has risen from 35.9 per cent for the equivalent period in 2018 to 39.4 per cent in 2019. This means there is now a two-in-five

chance of a one-year-old vehicle being offered for sale with finance outstanding. Similarly in the case of three-year-old vehicles (2017) checked last year there was a 36.8 per cent chance of one being offered for sale with finance outstanding based on checks on Cartell.ie in the year gone by. Even older vehicles are regularly offered for sale with finance outstanding – 22.3 per cent of all four-year-old vehicles offered for sale in 2019 had outstanding finance against them and the rates of finance are going up for older cars too. Four to ten-yearold cars all showed respective increases over the corresponding levels recorded last year. Some people make the mistake of going for the most expensive mattress as they assume it is ‘the best’. However, the most expensive mattress might not necessarily fit your needs and therefore it is vital you put your needs first. 4. In order to find the perfect mattress, you’ll need more than just sitting on the edge and giving it the occasional bounce or two. You don’t sleep sitting on the edge so why let that be the deciding factor? If you’re a side sleeper, lie on your side, if you’re a star fish sleeper, become the star that you are. You should lie in every position you would normally lie in.  5.  The most important thing to consider when selecting the right mattress is to confide in a knowledgeable sales person. Researching online will only get you so far and can more often than not be the equivalent of ‘Doctor Google’. Therefore, in order to get a proper diagnosis of your needs, a highly trained salesperson will point you in the right direction. The EZ Living Furniture Mattress Madness Sale starts on Thursday, March 5. For more information click onto www. ezlivingfurniture.ie.

HSS Hire invests in Hilti tools LEADING plant and tool hire company HSS Hire has announced considerable investment in further expanding the company’s comprehensive range of Hilti tools available to hire from stores around the city. The firm says HSS staff in Santry, Docklands, Long Mile Road and Rathcoole are now on hand to provide a first class service in the Dublin area. Combi hammers, wall chasers, chipping hammers, diamond drills, rotating lasers and breakers are among the power tools available. The Hilti 2000 breaker is the latest addition, with exceptionally low weight making it easy to handle

and manoeuvre. HSS Hire also has the Hilti Active Vibration Reduction (AVR) system, which cuts tool vibration by up to two-thirds for safer and more comfortable use. Hilti tools are renowned for their reliability and innovation and HSS Hire says it’s proud to be associated with such a quality company. Managing Director Michael Killeen said they are also delighted to be able to provide customers with an even greater range of quality tools. “We aim to provide a complete equipment management and hire service to big business, trade and DIY customers,” he added. “This move

will ensure that we can continue to supply them with celebrated tools to ensure they can complete whatever tasks are at hand.” HSS Hire has branches nationwide, which goes hand in hand with a wealth of experience and knowledge to help customers get the job done. Regional Manager of Southern Ireland Dan Doyle says: “We can equip our customers throughout Ireland with whatever they need and we also have a dedicated sales team who can sell anything from our expansive hire range.” For more information, drop into your local HSS Hire branch or call 1800223366.

A few things worth checking out this week Simon Home Run

Head up to Phoenix Park for the 2020 Simon Home Run on Saturday, March 7, and raise money to provide homes for the homeless. Participants can run, jog or walk the five mile (8km) route around the beautiful surroundings of the Phoenix Park. There will be kids’ activities on the day with food and entertainment for all the family to enjoy. It’s an enjoyable morning out for an important cause.

LIFE IN STILL LIFE This exhibition is running at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre until March 23 as part of the annual cross border partnership between the Office of Public Works (OPW) in the Republic of Ireland and the Department of Finance of Northern Ireland. It showcases 54 artworks on the theme of still life selected by the members of The Association of Art and Design Education in Northern Ireland. The visitor centre is open daily from 9.30am-5.15pm

DUBLIN FRAGMENTS: THE PEARSON COLLECTION

DUBLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

SONGS IN THE KEY OF D

Amateur choir, Songs in the Key of D, are celebrating International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8, with a spectacular night of music inspired by some of Dublin’s finest female musicians at 8pm in Stillorgan Orchard. The choir is led by professional directors and sing a repertoire made up entirely of songs that are either about Dublin or that have a strong link with the capital. Admission is free, and there will be a collection in aid of Songs in the Key of D on the night.

The Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival continues at various locations around the city until Sunday, March 8. From hidden gems to red-carpet spectaculars attended by directors and stars, it’s a celebration of cinematic excellence in all its forms. The Closing Gala features Herself Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) and produced by Element Pictures (The Favourite), teaming up with Sharon Horgan’s production company Merman, in Parnell Street. Full details from www.diff.ie.

WOMEN IN SCIENCE The French Embassy in partnership with Trinity College Dublin - School of Physics, the German Embassy and the Goethe Institute, are hosting an event to engage, learn and exchange about what it means to be women in science, from Marie Curie to today. Taking place on Friday, March 6 at 6.30pm in Trinity College for the Irish Premiere screening of the Franco-German-Polish film ‘Marie Curie – The Courage of Knowledge’ by Marie Noëlle the film is followed by a panel discussion featuring women from the research world and initiatives promoting opportunities for girls in STEM. The discussion will continue around German and French refreshments in the Fitzgerald Library. More information on the French Embassy’s website : ie.ambafrance.org/ Women-in-Science.

the Irish Georgian Society is presenting ‘Dublin Fragments: The Pearson Collection’ curated by artist Peter Pearson until March 22. This exhibition is a monument to Dublin at a particular moment in time in the last decades of the 20th century – a period of dramatic change on a widespread scale, where little of the built heritage was considered worth keeping. This presentation of architectural fragments and installations presents a dazzling display of Dublin craftsmanship. The exhibition is located at the City Assembly House on South William Street.
