Locals urge route rethink DUBLIN City Council has agreed to consider an alternative proposal from a resident’s group to the controversial cycleway, as reported on in the last issue of The Southside News.

Under the council’s original plan, a two-way cycle track would have reduced traffic

to one lane out of the city.

However, the community group which represents residents, says it feared traffic heading for the East Link bridge would be forced into Sandymount village and residential streets.

“If Dublin City Council’s current proposal was to be implemented as it stands,

introducing right turn bans along Strand Road outbound (such as Sydney Parade or St Albans) or indeed Merrion Road inbound (such as Serpentine Avenue) will just squeeze the traffic further into the limited rat runs while it is

the Bike Institute who donated bikes, and M&R Autos, who sponsored the running tops.

We’re worst-hit by ‘skin-eating’ bugs

Social block for D4 ‘if price is right’

AS if having to deal with a pandemic wasn’t bad enough, Irish homes are being confronted by an epidemic of a very different bug — and Dublin is the worst affected.

Silverfish — little grey pests that are up to one centimetre in length and have tiny scales — are the oldest known pests on earth and they love to feast off dead skin cells and hair.

The most affected areas include Dublin (53%), Kildare (9%), Meath (5%), and Galway (4%).

The little bugs can jump up to two feet and live for eight years and also like to feast on wallpaper, books, curtains and even cereal boxes.

Over the past three months, pest control experts Rentokil have seen an alarming rise in callouts to rid homes of these generally harmless but seriously unwanted guests. From July to September, the firm recorded an 89% increase in calls, with Dublin accounting for 53%.

The surge in callouts is due to the insects seeking shelter indoors as the temperature drops and the seasons change.

DUBLIN City Council has told the developers of a 15-storey tower in Ringsend that it would be interested in acquiring a lease on the building for social housing.

It comes after the developer, Melvin Properties, was refused permission in September for the residential block at York Road, which is close to the East Link Bridge, due to its height.

Melvin Properties has appealed but has also acknowledged local concerns over the lack of social housing and said it had approached the council and “reached agreement in principle” for the entire block to be used.

The council’s head of housing, Brendan Kenny, said any agreement would be pursued if planning permission was granted.

He said: “We would get a lot of criticism over the scarcity of social housing in Dublin 4, so to have an opportunity like this, we would be very, very interested, if the place gets planning permission, if it gets built, and if the price is right.”

And once silverfish access a property, they can spread like wildfire, laying up to 20 eggs every day.

Rentokil predicts silverfish callouts will continue to rise as conditions worsen over the autumn and winter months and particularly as more buildings lie vacant because of the lockdown.

Richard Faulkner, Advanced Technical Field Consultant for Rentokil said: “Rentokil has experienced a recent increase in silverfish callouts, and we expect this trend to increase in the coming months, as these insects tend to seek shelter in homes and businesses as the weather gets colder outside.”

There a number of steps to

take to prevent these insects: • Deny them food by vacuuming.

• Store food in containers.

• Dehumidify premises through the use of fans, dehumidifiers, or by opening windows to air them out.

• Make sure all cracks in walls and skirting boards are filled.

Tributes to mum who died Family of man who suffered brain injury make final plea on streets A GOFUND me campaign by the family of a father who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a biking accident in the city centre has raised a staggering €284,693 of its €400,000 target so far, including a top donation of €2,500 from one anonymous donor.

Des Vallely’s heartbreaking story has prompted a huge response ever since the appeal went public following the horrific accident in January.

Since then, Des has only seen his children Daniel and Ella Rose three times because of Covid restrictions.

The family’s nightmare began on January 8th, when Des came off his bike while travelling between two of the food markets which he and Tara run under Irish Village Markets.

Des was on his electric bicycle travelling through the centre on a designated bicycle lane when he was thrown from his bike and hit his head on a cycle bollard. Despite wearing a helmet, his injuries were catastrophic.

His wife, Tara, recalled: “He was cycling between markets to Spencer Dock. It was a lovely

sunny day, and he went over the Samuel Beckett Bridge and turned onto the river side of the quays.

“We don’t know what happened but he came off his bike and when he landed he hit his head off one of the halfmoon shaped bollards.

“He had a cycling helmet, a

motorbike jacket and a highvis jacket, he was always very careful, but it wasn’t enough to protect him.”

Des was rushed to hospital where surgeons performed a craniotomy — removing half of his skull — to allow his brain to swell.

But since regaining

consciousness, he can only move his eyes so he communicates by blinking.

As Tara explains: “While other people were locked into Covid, Des was locked into himself.

His family was locked out.”

The 51-year-old is due for discharge on Friday, November 6th ,from the National

Rehabilitation Hospital, where he has been in treatment since May, but Tara says she cannot bear the thought of letting him go to a nursing home where his family won’t get to see him.

So she took matters into her own hands and launched the ambitious campaign to raise €400,000 to cover the cost of home care.

“Everyone says a huge amount of rehab is through family and loved ones and it’s very true in Des’s case. That’s one of the reasons why I’ve decided to bring him home.”

“The kids didn’t see Des until the 8th of July, a full six months to the date of his accident. It was very tough on him and it was hugely emotional when he saw them.

“The smile on his face that day, it held for 20 minutes, I haven’t seen him smile like that before or since.”

With only days to go, the family are now in a race against time.

THE sister of a tragic motherof-four whose body was found on a street in west Dublin, has paid a heartbreaking tribute to ‘her big sis’.

The body of Janet Jackson, who was in her 30s, was discovered in the early hours of Saturday, October 24, by Gardai on Lynch’s Lane in Clondalkin.

Janet’s sister confirmed the news on social media paying tribute to her sibling. She said: “I can’t take this. Whoever hurt and took my sister away from me will pay for this. My big sister, I love you so much and I just can’t believe this.

Rest in Peace, Janet.”

A string of tributes poured in for Janet, who became the second homeless person to die that weekend in less than 24 hours.

On Friday, the body of a man in his 40s was found near the IFSC. Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) CEO Anthony Flynn said he was “completely saddened” by the deaths.

‘They will be greatly missed’ THE PRINCIPAL of the school attended by two children who were found dead with their mother in a house in Ballinteer, south Dublin, has released a statement paying tribute.

Shocked locals turned out at a vigil in the Llewellyn estate in Ballinteer last week, following the tragic discovery of the bodies of a mother and two young children in a house.

India’s Ambassador to Ireland, Sandeep Kumar, also visited the scene and placed flowers.

The remains of the children and their mother — Seema Banu (37), her 11-year-old daughter Asfira Riza and 6-year-old son Faizan Syed — are believed to have lain undiscovered in the house for some time before being discovered by gardaí just after midday last Wednesday.

It is believed they may have been “dead for several days” before the grim discovery was made. Neighbours alerted gardai when the family, who are originally from India, hadn’t been seen.

A tap left running in the semi-detached house had flooded the property. When

gardai called to the house, they could not get in the front door as it was locked, but noticed water seeping from underneath.

The Armed Support Unit were then called and officers entered the back door of the house.

On Friday, gardai said the chief suspect for the suspected strangulation murder of the two siblings and their mother had been under “discreet” 24hour garda surveillance.

Ms Banu was originally from India but had been living in Ireland for a number of years, moving into the house in Ballinteer in recent months.

The children were quite new to Ballinteer Educate Together National School, where principal Orlaith Curran paid tribute to the children, saying they would be “greatly missed” by everyone.

“This is a terrible tragedy for their family, our school and our community. We are deeply saddened by these devastating events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the children’s family and friends,” she said.

A letter was sent to parents with advice on how best to explain the tragedy to their own children.

We miss out on the All-Ireland friendly champs to Galway City

DESPITE the travel ban, readers of Conde Nast Traveller either found ways around them or have some unforgettable memories to draw on as the votes have come in for the best destinations of 2020.

One category that stood out this year however, was the ‘Europe’s Friendlist City’ award, proving people are really what make the travel experience as much as place — and Ireland has two cities in the top spots.

But much to the dismay of Dubliners, the capital came in just behind Galway, which was voted Europe’s friendliest city in the Condé Nast Traveller Reader Travel Awards 2020.

Reflecting on the results, Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland said: “In what has been a devastating year for travel and tourism, this is some good news – reminding people everywhere that, when the time is right, the entire island of Ireland is a great

DUBLIN Ladies Football star Carla Rowe was on site to officially open the new state-of-the-art Lidl store, at Shackleton Drive, Lucan, with a donation of €1,000 to hand over to Lucan Disability Action Group.

Along with a second new store in Ballymun, Lidl has supported more than 550 jobs through the construction phase and will create an

additional 59 new permanent jobs in the two new stores.

The developments have also seen an investment of more than €21m into the local communities.

Christmas lights may stay dark AFTER a storm of controversy last year, the ‘Nollaig Shona Duit’ Christmas lights are to make a welcome return to Grafton Street this year to bring a little bit of cheer to the capital, but some lights may stay dark this year.

Dublin Town, the organisation responsible for installing Christmas lights, last year defended the ‘Welcome to Grafton Quarter’ lights.

The branding proved very unpopular with the public, hundreds of social media users and many other city business groups, while even Dublin City Council chief executive Owen Keegan said he prefered the original Irish-language sign.

A spokesman for Dublin Town noted there had been two Nollaig Shona Duit signs — with one remaining in place in nearby Wicklow Street — but that the one originally on Grafton Street had simply come to the end of its life after 15 years.

DublinTown added that it will be unable to provide new

Christmas lights in some places in the capital, following what was described as “an extremely difficult year” for businesses in the city centre. But we can look forward to lighting on 26 city streets, including on Grafton and Henry/Mary Streets.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive of Dublin Town, Richard Guiney, made an appeal to buy from Irish stores this year to keep businesses afloat.

Speaking to RTE Radio One’s DriveTime, Mr Guiney said: “Certainly, if it looks like the period of restrictions goes on further than December 1, the business community will probably wonder if it’s worth their while paying for putting up the Christmas lights.”

He added: “Our members have obviously had a very difficult year in 2020 and frankly, a lot of them were looking to have a good Christmas to make it into 2021 and obviously that’s not going to be the case now. So we’re very concerned we’re going to see quite a number of closures.”

His wife could see no reason to hurry. Lots of time yet , she said, but he just brushed her opinion aside with that ridiculous laugh he had.

His wife gave a crooked little smile. If she had a euro for every time her husband mentioned ‘these uncertain times’ she would be a rich woman and could give up this seasonal work.

She did know. He had told her often enough. She added two euro to her bank balance for that one.

All the same, she wondered if Ruddy should maybe get tested,

but Nick was having none of it.

“No! No! No! He always looks like that - it’s that ridiculous nose of his. If he gets tested they could all end up in isolation and then where would we be?

We’ve all got to stick together in these uncertain times.”

Nick went off to talk to the production team and his wife added another euro to her account. She hadn’t time for this early planning malarky.

She had important things to do.

She had banana bread to make and she was learning Welsh from an online platform. And if that wasn’t enough, she was in training for a marathon in her living room to raise money for Tibetan llamas.

She was worried about Ruddy,

though. Nicholas looked worried too when he returned from the production floor.

“Trouble? she asked.

“Trouble!” he said.

“It’s that bloody Legolas.

Sneaked off to Rivendell to visit his uncle Elrond and, if that wasn’t bad enough, they went to a football match together.”

His wife couldn’t see a problem there. Hadn’t the GAA said football was perfectly safe?

“The GAA!” exploded Nick.

“I wouldn’t trust the Gnome Athletic Association to run a piss-up in a brewery!”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” said his wife, and Nick had to concede she might have a point.

But whatever about breweries, they had made a hopeless job of

running the Covid restrictions at Rivendell Robert Emmet’s . Half the team had tested positive and now most of the supporters had been ordered into isolation, Legolas included.

“If he’s a superspreader we’ll have to shut up shop,” said Nicholas. “Oh! Woe! Woe! We’ll never get the job finished on time. And then what will we do? You know I have to deliver - there’s no Covid claus in my contract.”

“Uncertain times,” said his wife, beating Nicholas to it.

“But you can’t say you weren’t warned. I remember them telling you way back in March ... if the virus gets in here, your elf system just won’t be able to cope.”

Unity will benefit Dublin DESSIE ELLIS Sinn Fein TD for Dublin North-West I AM an Irish republican and I strongly believe that the only way to deliver on the promise of the 1916 Proclamation to ‘cherish all of the children of the nation equally’ is through the delivery of a 32-county Irish republic.

In January 2017 Dublin City Council passed a Sinn Fein motion calling for a referendum on Irish Unity an integral component of the Good Friday Agreement.

The motion reflected our analysis that the Britain’s Brexit vote had brought the question of Irish Unity to the top of the political agenda. Events since then have considerably strengthened our view that a referendum must be held.

As we face in to a possible no-deal Brexit, the reality of

British jurisdiction over part of our nation means that in a few months part of Ireland will be inside the EU and part will be outside.

There will be dreadful impacts on businesses here in the south. Last month media outlets reported that effects of Brexit on the Irish road haulage industry could cause some products here to double in price. This will have a major knock on effect on our economy Covid-19 has taught us that we need an All Island pandemic response plan. Pandemics do not observe borders.

We have an all-Ireland approach to animal health, but not to human health. This crazy situation arises because six counties of Ireland are ruled by Britain and by a Tory government that was never elected by people in this country.

Recent opinion polls, North and South, have consistently shown support for Irish Unity.

Unionist political parties in the North no longer have a majority at election time.

In the Brexit referendum, the people in the six counties voted solidly to remain in the EU. All of these indicate that people would consider changing the

constitutional arrangement, and vote for unity, but it won’t happen unless we plan for it and make it happen.

We have had a hundred years of the division of partition.

It’s time build a real, national, Republic that treats everyone equally. Irish Unity is a threat to nobody. It offers the

potential of a better future for all our citizens, including the unionist community.

Several studies and reports in recent years have shown that Irish Unity would boost the economy of the whole island.

Dr Kurt Hubner, of Vancouver University, estimates that in eight years following unification

the economy would grow by over €36bn.

In a recent book, David McWilliams wrote “In short, in pure budgetary terms, there is little doubt that the Republic’s economy could absorb the North, even before the commercial dynamism of unification kicks in.”

Partition has been bad for us all. It has damaged the economy of all of Ireland for a hundred years. Irish Unity is now a doable project.

Irish Unity will be good for everyone. It’s not just an issue for the North. It’s an issue for everyone, from Dublin North West to Derry and beyond.

Green to yellow: Recycling initiative changes bin colour YOU might have noticed the eye-catching new yellow bins which have been rolled out across the city centre recently, as part of a recycling initiative

by Dublin City Centre.

The city-wide behaviour change initiative aims to build a culture of ‘on-the-go recycling’ in the capital and launches at a time where the impact of the pandemic has seen a rise in the use of single use items and increased consumption on the move.

Last month the Government

committed to ambitious new targets to tackle waste and introduced a new waste action plan. Under the plan, all plastic packaging on the market will have to be reusable or recyclable by 2030.

Speaking at the launch of Dublin #CircleCity campaign, the Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu said: “Dubliners will now be able to recycle on the go. Dublin City Council already provides a wide variety of recycling infrastructure throughout the city resulting in

An initial 25 bins have been installed in various locations

around the city as part of the #CircleCity campaign, with more to follow in the coming months. All bins feature a clear call to action to members of the public to get involved and play their part in recycling effectively.

Meanwhile, nearly nine out of 10 people in a new poll believe the Government’s plan to cut down waste by putting a deposit on bottles and cans doesn’t go far enough.

The new scheme will see people paying a deposit on all plastic bottles and aluminium cans and getting their money back for recycling them.

According to a new poll however, 88% of Irish adults would favour an ‘all-in’ model, which would see metal cans, plastic water bottles, plastic milk bottles, glass bottles, coffee cups, and drink cartons and pouches included in the scheme.

The poll, carried out by Red C on behalf of VOICE Ireland, also found that 78% of people would like to see different deposit fees based on the size and type of the container.

VOICE coordinator Mindy O’Brien told Newstalk Breakfast recently, that the proposed scheme only covers plastic and aluminium because those are the most common ‘on-the-go’ containers. She said the scheme should be future proofed to ensure that glass bottles are not

Sowing seeds in trade battle

SIX up-and-coming companies from Dublin are doing battle for a €20,000 prize for this year’s InterTradeIreland Seedcorn Investor Readiness Competition.

Each business will deliver an investment pitch remotely to a panel of venture capitalists, business angels and leading business leaders at the final on November 10.

by KBC Dublin Marathon organisers as a recipient of the #RunYourTown award.

Like many running events around the world the KBC Dublin Marathon had to adapt and change their plans for 2020 and bring the event to the runners virtually.

The #RunYourTown award

was developed to acknowledge the commitment of thousands of runners who had signed up to complete the KBC Virtual Marathon in their local area.

Laura McMahon is a deserving recipient of the award. A final year student nurse, Laura first completed the KBC Dublin Marathon in 2019. Laura worked tirelessly throughout the Covid-19

pandemic and found going on a run while listening to music helped her wind down.

Laura is just one of thousands who took part in this year’s KBC Virtual Dublin Marathon. Runners are encouraged to continue to share their journeys by using #RunYourTown and #KBCVirtualDublinMarathon Marathon.
