Dubbo + Great Western Plains Visitor Guide

The Warrumbungles is a tiny slice of Australia where the shortest walk can stop you in your tracks and your next ‘WOW’ moment is a simple gaze at the sky. Discover a lavish stretch of land loaded with adventure and discovery. The Warrumbungle Shire is comfortably situated on the junction of four major highways and is dotted with the quaint towns of Coonabarabran, Coolah, Baradine, Binnaway, Dunedoo and Mendooran. ASTRONOMY CAPITAL / Gaze through a telescope and uncover the mysteries of the universe in Coonabarabran, Australia’s Astronomy Capital. By day, visit Australia’s largest optical astronomy research facility at Siding Spring Observatory atop the Warrumbungles Mountains. After dark, under a canopy of sparkling stars, you can explore the evening sky. Be an astronomer yourself at one of the public observatories, before retiring to the quiet hum of nature. GREAT OUTDOORS / Head outside and explore the abundance of natural beauty across three amazing national parks. Wander the volcanic Warrumbungle National Park and see the Breadknife in all its glory, take in sweeping views at Coolah Tops and immerse yourself in the Aboriginal culture of The Pilliga. Smell the fragrance of stunning wild flowers and observe the abundant bird life. Go ‘Wild about Binnaway’ on a self-drive nature trail on the lush banks of the Castlereagh. LOCAL CHARM / The locals are known for their easy-going, firstclass hospitality. Meander through town, grab a souvenir from a gift shop, indulge in local tastes and a tipple, or take in some culture at Pandora Gallery. Dare we say, our pubs provide great insights into local culture too.

GETTING HERE Escape to the middle of nowhere while being in the centre of everywhere! Coonabarabran is a comfortable 5.5 hours’ drive from Sydney. WELLINGTON

58 GREAT WESTERN PLAINS

Dubbo + Great Western Plains Visitor Guide

Wellington offers breathtaking natural beauty, a mining history dating back more than 200 years, all delivered with a dose of good old-fashioned country charm. Discover a haven for all outdoor enthusiasts at Wellington. Hike through a 2,100 hectare reserve, paddle a picturesque lake or meander through award-winning gardens. PREHISTORIC HISTORY / Trek back in time and venture through a well-preserved slice of prehistoric history at the Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine. Look up and then keep looking up at the Altar, a spectacular 15 metre stalagmite in the Cathedral Cave. Or don your hard hat and explore the intriguing history of the Phosphate Mine, a functioning mine during World War One. While you’re at the Caves, stroll over to the Japanese Gardens and bask in the tranquillity; alternatively, pack your clubs and enjoy a round of golf just a short walk away at the course. LAKE BURRENDONG / Adventure beckons at Lake Burrendong or ‘the dam’ as it’s known to locals. Spike the adrenaline in the warmer months and try your hand at water skiing, wakeboarding or biscuiting. If throwing a leisurely line in the water is more your speed you may just take home the big one with seven different fish species to catch. More than just aquatic life, the dam is a haven for native Australian animals and there’s no better way to spot them than on a scenic hike. NATURAL WONDERS / Mingle with Mother Nature at the 164 hectare Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum. Wander through Fern Gully, a man-made rainforest situated beneath an enormous suspended, thatched canopy – it’s a bona fide nature-lover’s paradise. Or head to Mt Arthur Reserve for a spot of bushwalking or mountain bike riding. There are seven walking trails of varying lengths and difficulties offering spectacular views over Wellington and the Bell and Macquarie rivers.

GETTING HERE Located on the Mitchell Highway, Wellington is an easy 4.5 hour drive from Sydney and is within a one hour drive of Dubbo, Orange, Mudgee and Parkes. From Sydney Central take NSW Trainlink’s daily XPT service or daily train and coach service. Or fly direct to Dubbo on one of four airlines and hire a car or take the bus or train to Wellington.

EATING HERE Sample seasonal produce fresh from the region at Wellington’s monthly Rotary Markets or sip wine straight from the barrel in Bell River Estate’s rustic underground cellar. If you’re craving hearty home-cooking at its best head to the historic Lion of Waterloo, the oldest tavern still operating west of the Blue Mountains.

STAYING HERE Wellington has a quality mix of over 20 motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, caravan parks and camping grounds. You won’t miss a second of the action when you pitch your tent onsite at two of the region’s biggest attractions or snuggle up at Hermitage Hill, once the town’s old hospital it’s now a majestic country retreat.

DID YOU KNOW POPULATION / 8,850 TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS / Wirum Wirum People of the Wiradjuri Nation ESTABLISHED / Wellington was first settled in 1817 and was established as a town in 1823 Wellington Caves was mentioned in what is believed to be the first children’s book ever written in Australia, titled A Mother’s Offering to Her Children. 1800 621 614
