Now through October 16, Notes from the Forest showcases the music within trees, exploring the different woods and processes that have been employed in building various musical instruments throughout history. Longwood Gardens’ own circa-1923 Steinway piano takes center stage. The musically minded are also invited to enjoy the concert series offered every year in the gardens. Special performances this summer will include live sets by the Beach Boys, the Indigo Girls and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. On June 4, the annual Wine and Jazz Festival combines the area’s finest drink and sounds set against the blooming environs. But a visit to Longwood Gardens wouldn’t be complete without the famous 44

fountain and fireworks show. Beginning on May 28, the illuminated fountain display will welcome summer with an aquatic and colorful bang. “There is always something different going on at Longwood Gardens,” Redman says. “You rarely see the same thing twice.” Longwood Gardens is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 27. From May 28 through Sept. 4, the gardens remain open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $8 for students. Children aged four and under are free.
