Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University. Since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta has been at the forefront of creating programming to promote academic excellence, offer scholarships, provide support for the underserved, educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of public policy, and highlight issues of community concern while offering effective solutions for resolving problems. From the 22 Founders, the organization has initiated more than 300,000 women to continue the work of its mission. After 107 years, this sisterhood of predominately African American, college educated women has remained true to its mission of providing assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. As such, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. claims more than 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Re-
public of Korea. The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Trust:
International Awareness and Involvement
Physical and Mental Health
Political Awareness and Involvement
Recognizing the need in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a member of Delta Sigma Theta to maintain a closer affiliation with her peers in interests and achievements, Alpha Epsilon Chapter was chartered on April 3, 1927 as a mixed chapter so that graduates living in the Pittsburgh area and students of city universities such as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) and others might be able to affiliate. Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter has met the challenge of changing patterns through the years and has made advances toward establishing a sound operational basis which has been necessitated by its expanding numbers and programs. The Sorors of Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter will continue to serve their community by fostering and executing the ideals, goals, and programs of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Jabberwock is a traditional program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Members of the Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, in Boston, Massachusetts, presented the first Jabberwock in 1925 as an effort to find a new method of raising money for the chapter’s scholarship fund. Marion Hope Conover of Iota Chapter conceived the idea of a variety show with skits, dances, and songs in competition for prizes of varying amounts. She called this new kind of show a "Jabberwock" because it was inspired by the Jabberwock in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland. "The "Jabberwock" was a mythical character who summoned all the creatures of the kingdom each year for the purpose of putting on a show. The first Jabberwock was an immediate success, and the idea caught on with many chapters of Delta Sigma Theta. The Jabberwock has since evolved into a more diverse program that continues to raise funds for scholarships and other Delta Sigma Theta service projects. The word ''Jabberwock" was copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on December 28, 1947. Today, Jabberwock is a national program within Delta Sigma Theta that reflects the Sorority's commitment to scholarship and the arts. Many communities served by local chapters of Delta Sigma Theta eagerly anticipate the event. Jabberwock funds are earmarked for scholarships to be given by the sponsoring chapter to young people of promise and ability, and for public service projects. The Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Jabberwock Scholarship Program provides funds for scholarships given to young women, grades 6-12, who participate in the program. The scholarship funds will assist with financial needs for participant's education. The Jabberwock Committee has worked diligently to develop a Jabberwock program that provided a curriculum that includes innovative educational, cultural, community service, and selfenrichment activities and programs.
Greetings! Welcome to the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter’s Jabberwock 2020 event! Jabberwock has been a signature event of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated since the first presentation in 1925 and for the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter for a number of years. As the President of the Chapter, I am delighted to once again share this occasion with the Pittsburgh community. I would like to extend a special welcome to all our friends, family, and generous guests who have supported our chapter for Jabberwock 2020. On behalf of the chapter, I would like to thank our guests who have been supporters of various Delta events in the community and thanks to those who are attending our events for the first time. I appreciate that you have chosen to support us in this special occasion especially considering the current COVID-19 pandemic. May we all take this opportunity to congratulate Ms. Jabberwock 2020 and all of our participants. Welcome and thank you for supporting the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter’s Jabberwock 2020.

This evening we are gathering for the culminating event of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter Jabberwock Program. We are excited to introduce seven dynamic young ladies who for the past five months we have had the pleasure to get to know, work with and assist them in raising funds to support our Sorority’s scholarship initiatives and their future educational and career pursuits. The Jabberwock program provides participants with skills, knowledge and resources in character enhancement, academic enrichment, Black history and cultural aesthetics, leadership and communication skills development, goal setting, financial planning, community service, mentoring and scholarships. To the Jabberwock parents, families and friends, it is with a grateful heart that the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter thanks you for your time, commitment and support of this program. We have enjoyed getting to know your daughters and we
appreciate you allowing us to be part of your village. Know that we are always here to continue to support them in their future endeavors. To the seven dynamic young Black sisters, Anisa, Arianna, Kameron, Kayla, Kyrah, Nyaira, and Ryann enjoy this evening. You have worked hard, and the Jabberwock Committee is extremely proud of each of you. Continue to shine as the Nubian Queens that you are and always remember, that as you encounter life’s challenges, you are Blessed and Highly Favored. To the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter members and the Jabberwock Committee, thank you for your continued support to our young sisters and your abiding love for our Sisterhood. The African Proverb says,
If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together. May we continue to go far, as we work together, striving to leave our footprints on our communities and making a difference in the world we live in through scholarship, sisterhood, and service. Sincerely,
Ayisha A. Morgan-Lee, Chair Erika Goldsmith, Co-Chair Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta 2020 Jabberwock Committee
In our Chapter, the Jabberwock Committee is the backbone of the “Jabberwock Experience.” This year members of Delta Sigma Theta spearheaded educational, social, and public service activities to help broaden young ladies’ horizons as we assisted in preparing them for their next step in life. Over the years Jabberwock has changed its look; however, it has never changed its purpose. The proceeds from Jabberwock are designated for scholarships and community projects.

Anisa is the daughter of Christin Callis and enjoys creating art, reading, learning technology, Choral singing and spending time with friends and family. Oakland Catholic where she is a member of the Black Student Union. Outside of school she is involved in community service with Blessings from Above, a non-profit organization that helps people who are in need of everyday essentials. She also studies dance at Hill Dance Academy Theatre (HDAT). Arianna has enjoyed participating in Jabberwock and meeting other people who she feels are like her second family. Partici-
pating in Jabberwock has shown her how to prepare for her future and the importance of networking. Arianna wants to attend a Historically Black College/University to study writing, forensic science, and dance. She wants to make sure she is mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually prepared for all of her future blessings. She lives by her favorite quote and scripture…… “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl. But by all means keep moving.” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) and “I can do all things
through Christ that strengthens me.” Arianna is the daughter of Dominique Upsher and granddaughter of Sherry Upsher.

Kayla Page, a graduating Senior at Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, is highly active in and out of school. She is a member of the African American Centers for Advanced Studies, part of the Female Empowerment Mission through the University of Pittsburgh, the National Honor Society and Youth & Government. She is a part of a dance ministry and stays physically fit by playing soccer, basketball, and softball. As the older sister, Kayla has been an inspiration and role model for sister Kyrah. She has enjoyed participating in the Jabberwock workshops because they helped “to learn life skills that are vital and good to have in navigating the world today”. She has also enjoyed meeting new people and the fun times with the other participants and Jabberwock committee members. Kayla plans on continuing her training with the Army where she has already completed ROTC training. This summer she will be in training in Virginia before attending college in the spring majoring in Athletic Training. Her long-term goal is to have a stable job and establish her foundation. Her favorite scripture is from Joshua 1:9, “This is my command - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go.”
is a junior at Barack Obama Academy of International Studies. She is involved in many STEM related programs such as Investing NOW! with the University of Pittsburgh, Mpowerhouse which was introduced through her counselor and classes to become a certified drone operator. Not letting her artistic talents be overlooked, she participates in activities involving the arts such as a Christian fine arts program where she took up singing, theater and spoken word. She has also been a part of many talent shows, plays and one act performances and still participates in sed activities. She serves as a mentor at her school and is in the running to become a Pittsburgh Promise Ambassador. Kyra is heavily involved in sports as a student athlete playing soccer for Obama and serving on the high school girls basketball as team manager of four years. She is also engaged in the Female Empowerment Mission (FEM) with the University of Pittsburgh and part of Speak UP! which is a platform for young students to do spoken word along with other activities. As the daughter of a minister, it is not surprising that Kyra is heavily involved in church as she finds many opportunities to pay it forward. What I have enjoyed most about participating in Jabberwock is getting to know the other participants of this program and meeting some of the Deltas. “I aspire to join the Delta sorority when I go to college and being a part of this has given me a taste of what it would be like having a forever sisterhood. This program has also taught me many other things school cannot teach you and that's having class and how to be a respectable lady. That is what I enjoy the most.” Her plans are simply just to succeed. “I want to accomplish the goals I have set for myself and meet my own standards such as going to college and setting myself up for a comfortable life and do that by doing what I love.” Her favorite scripture is 2 Timothy 1:7 - For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
