A Message from the

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Every year, we are reminded what a special place Waxhaw is. There is no better place to see that than from the swing on the porch of the historic McDonald House in downtown Waxhaw. As you sit there, and look out across the street at Waxhaw United Methodist Church, you experience two institutions that have seen and been a part of everything that has shaped Waxhaw into a strong community. They see a community that, throughout our rich history, has always and continues to focus on the well-being of our people. Thanks to Union County Public Schools, we have some of the best schools in the state. Our community approach to safety continues to be recognized; Waxhaw has been named one of the safest towns in North Carolina for several years in a row. They also see a community that is focused on connections – our quality of life - in everything we do. Our many neighborhoods are Waxhaw’s community building blocks. We work hard to bring those neighborhoods together as one community by offering connection opportunities throughout the town. This includes our Community Corner by the water tower, where you can congregate and relax with friends. We invest in over two dozen community events that bring both our Waxhaw and regional families together to celebrate holidays, seasons of life, and everything our town has to offer. We have worked hard to make our town a hub for daytime, evening, and weekend connections. By encouraging historically appropriate and pedestrian-oriented enhancements, both the new and existing businesses have been able to thrive in a unique, well-preserved, and intact downtown. This led to state-wide recognition when Waxhaw received the Great Main Street Award in 2018. As Waxhaw prepares for its 130th birthday, you will continue to see a focus on what makes our town that special community. We will continue to use our greatest asset – our history and heritage – to grow carefully as a community. We will do that through the strength of our connections for everyone’s well-being and quality of life. It is an absolute pleasure being the Mayor of Waxhaw. My best wishes to all of our wonderful citizens and businesses and our extended regional families for the coming year.

Sincerely Yours, Get Connected With Waxhaw

DID YOU KNOW? The most noteworthy native of this region is Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States. President Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area in 1767. An ongoing dispute centers on whether he was born in North Carolina or just to the south in South Carolina. He was born in one of two cabins, less than 100 yards apart - but because the state line ran between them, it’s unknown which state he was actually born in. Each state has monuments and historical markers along their borders making the claim of Jacksons’ birthplace.

Waxhaw K-9 Officer Making a Big Difference “The numbers have already shown that crime in the community has dropped tremendously.” [ Written by Penelope McClenny ]

For most humans, the work schedule of the Waxhaw Police Department’s K-9 dog would send them running to update their resume. “It’s a 24-7 job,” Officer Billy Mills said of his canine partner, Elvis. “When I’m at the house, we’re doing obedience. When I’m at work, we’re doing obedience. We’re never off.” During a recent training session, as he excitedly plowed through a patch of grass in search of evidence, it becomes evident that the department’s youngest officer has mastered a mantra that still

Waxhaw • North Carolina

eludes most adults: do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life. Elvis, a Belgian Malinois, joined the department in October 2017, just two months before his first birthday. He and Mills immediately began training, including an intensive 8-week course at an Anson County facility where they slept next to each other each night. "We worked seven days, Sunday to Sunday, putting in as many hours as possible,” Mills said. Combined with his training, Elvis arrived with a hefty, $15,000 price tag, but Mills said the department began reaping a payback almost immediately after the energetic K-9 began full-time work in January 2018. He posts an 80percent success rate in tracking suspects, including those wanted in connection with a stolen car, a cellular store robbery and a domestic abuse incident. “So far, since Elvis has hit the road, he’s already paid for himself and another dog,” he said. The department now has a second K-9 in training. The bulk of Elvis’ success comes from identifying illegal drugs. Whether hidden in cars or in the walls or other seemingly undetectable areas of a home, drugs rarely elude the officer’s probing snout. “Honestly, our numbers in drugs have dropped tremendously just in the past few months,” Mills said, adding that news of Elvis’ successful vehicle and home searches has quickly spread to potential drug offenders. “It’s gotten around that we don’t

play,” Mills said. “They (suspects) know that if I have to get my dog out, they instantly go to jail.” Elvis’ ability to quickly discover illegal drugs is a result of his keen olfactory senses. The odor of each drug “dances” on his sense of smell in a different way, Mills said. To demonstrate this skill during a training session, Mills used cotton balls. Each ball is stored in a bag containing a certain drug, such as marijuana and cocain. While Elvis waits in the K-9 vehicle parked outside of the police department, volunteers are asked to hide the cotton balls in various rooms within the department. About 15 minutes later, Elvis is released into the building, taking just seconds to point his snout toward a cabinet drawer and behind a computer screen. Rewarded with a few tosses of his favorite tennis ball, Elvis soon returns to work. Earlier in the drill, while he remained in his K-9 vehicle, the same volunteers each selected two items from a pencil box, then followed instructions to rub the items under their arms. Human scents are strongest under the arms, in the groin area, and on top of the head, Mils explained. Next, one of the volunteers tossed his objects, a silver spoon and shotgun shell casing, into a grassy area. The other volunteer tossed a plastic spoon and an empty prescription bottle about 30 yards away, onto the asphalt parking lot. Both areas simulate searching for items that might be tossed from a vehicle.

His drug search drill complete, Elvis emerged from indoors and, once commanded, immediately went to work searching the grass. He identified both objects in less than two minutes, and completed the asphalt even more quickly. The volunteers stood impressed, but Mills will readily admit that achieving these training goals takes work and patience. “It’s frustrating at times. It’s almost like having a child. When a 4-year-old does well on tests, you are extremely

excited,” Mills said, adding later that work with Elvis has another added benefit. “Being a K-9 Handler has honestly helped me to be a father,” he said. “It’s learning how to be patient but also knowing how to reward at certain times, to know when to get the point across.” Those roles as a handler and father actually intersect often. When he’s not at the department or on the road for a call, Elvis enjoys an active life with Mills and his family. "I have a 2-year-old, and he plays with him every day,” Mills said. The family’s 7-year-old lab is also one of Elvis’ best friends. “They love hanging out. They fight over sticks in my yard.” That ability - to immediately switch from work to play - is a trait Mills said is uniquely Elvis. “He has such an on and off switch. It blows my mind. Most of your dogs, it takes a bit of calming down, a separation, a presenting of something new,” Mill said, recounting a training demonstration with young school students as an example. “I sent a decoy out, and I let Elvis loose. Elvis bit the decoy, and then immediately after he came off the bite, I asked if there was anyone who wanted to pet him, and the kids surrounded him. It’s crazy that he has such an on and off switch.” To make sure Elvis stays on track physically for his work hard/play hard schedule, he makes frequent visits to

Dr. Susan Bonilla at Passionate Paws Animal Hospital. With her prior experience caring for police and military dogs and her training in acupuncture, chiropractic and physical therapy care, Bonilla is also an important part of the K-9 unit’s team. “He’s a really sweet dog to us in the hospital,” she said. Elvis never objects to bloodwork or physical exams, including dental exams. The veterinarians focus on “keeping their teeth nice and healthy because they need their teeth to bite. They can’t lose their canines,” Bonilla said. Replacing those teeth with titanium Waxhaw • North Carolina

implants costs around $3,000, Bonilla said. To help avoid that expense and keep Elvis in shape, Mills uses a small finger brush on his partner’s teeth and incorporates plenty of daily exercise into his routine. “I throw his ball over and over until he’s dead tired,” he said. “I also let him swim in the pond after his ball. The pond is best because it makes him more tired.” Bonilla and her staff volunteer their services, charging only for medications. “They’re great assets to the community because they can really smell a lot of things and save a lot time if they are in pursuit of someone,” she said. “It will really help make the community a lot safer and the police department’s job a lot easier if they can be utilized.” Supportive citizens such as Bonilla and many others are the driving force behind the department’s successful K-9 program, Mills said, from dropping off treats and tennis balls to participating in fundraisers. “When we first started up, the community actually helped raise the money for Elvis,” he said. With a golf tournament, a GoFundMe page, and help from town hall, the department can support a great asset like Elvis. “If I could tell anything to the citizens of Waxhaw, it would be thanks

for the support from the beginning,” he said. “The numbers have already shown that crime in the community has dropped tremendously.” n

Fear Free Animal Hospital Design [ By Dr. Susan Bonilla, MS, CVA, CCRP, CACP ] You may have recently heard the term Fear Free from a friend or seen it advertised. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Marty Becker, it comprises a group of different veterinarian professionals and pet experts gathered together for the single purpose of preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the veterinary professionals and people who care for them. Since its inception, over 30,000 veterinary and pet professionals have committed to becoming Fear Free certified. Passionate Paws Animal Hospital is proud to announce it has joined this elite group of individuals. Not only do we have Fear Free certified doctors and team members on staff (Fear Free groomers are coming soon) but we will become a Fear Free certified practice, which will validate much of what we have already practiced since opening over two years ago. Fear Free certified practices will have successfully implemented Fear Free into all aspects of their business: culture and leadership, client education, staff training, the facility, and most importantly, patient visits.

we just knew there had to be a better experience for pets and pet parents than the traditional vet visit so many of us have experienced in the past.

A visit to the vet should be pleasant and fun, not stressful and fearful.

My husband and I built our hospital for pet parents because we are pet parents and so is everyone of our team. We set out to create a unique experience for both pets and pet parents that put your furbaby at the center, promoted and delivered a Fear Free experience, provided integrative pet healthcare, and partnered with you as the primary caregiver in developing customized treatment plans. When we started our design, we knew nothing of the Fear Free program,

A visit to the vet should be pleasant and fun, not stressful and fearful. In order to do this we completely reinvented the look, feel, and even smell that has long been associated with a typical animal hospital. But, we didn’t stop at design. We also reexamined our approach to patient care and pet parent service to ensure a calm, pleasant, and fun experience for pet and pet parent alike.

At Passionate Paws, we strive to make every patient visit a Fear Free experience as every team member wants your pet to be happy when he or she walks through the door of our animal hospital. Free Free doesn’t mean that your pet will never experience anything uncomfortable at our hospital—he or she may be injured or ill, after all—but it does mean that we make every effort to reduce any fear, anxiety, and stress related to examinations, procedures, and grooming. Here are a few of the ways we help your pet stay comfortable and relaxed from arrival to departure. When you first arrive at our hospital your senses and your pet’s will be greeted with pleasing smells from our aromatherapy diffuser, designed to calm and relieve anxiety. No hospital should smell like an animal hospital, and ours never does. To ease our patients even more, we have designed our waiting area to be species specific, with cats and dogs on opposite sides. Taking it one step further, we built a cat-only exam room (no dogs allowed) to provide an added layer of calmness for our feline friends. For those dogs that are a bit more nervous, we can bring you right away into our side door that leads directly into an exam room. For our anxious cats, we can bring them directly into the cat-only exam room upon arrival. Upon entering the exam room, you and your pet will notice that performing exams on a cold, slick table are a thing of the past. For our dog patients, we provide comfortable bedding on the floor, where our medical team conducts the majority of their examinations and procedures. For our cat patients, we offer a cat tree as well as warm bedding to perform the majority of the examinations and procedures. Each room is equipped with natural pheromone diffusers that emit calming substances into the air that are specific to dogs and cats, and play species-specific music bioacoustically engineered to calm your pet (and maybe even you.) These examples and more await each and everyone of our patients and pet parents at Passionate Paws, providing a very unique one-ofa-kind experience. Our hospital becoming Fear Free certified is just the natural progression from what my husband and I envisioned from the start. We are so excited to continue to improve the experience for our existing pets and pet parents and for those that are still to come. Dr. Susan Bonilla is the owner of the award-winning Passionate Paws Animal Hospital in Waxhaw, offering traditional and complementary treatment options such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and physical therapy. Full-service grooming is also available. You can reach her at 704-256-7576 or e-mail at Hello@PassionatePaws.Vet
