•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Waxhaw sits in one of the fastest-growing regions in the State of North Carolina. The growth of new single-family homes in Waxhaw can be attributed to the high quality planned communities surrounding our northern and western town limits. Whether you look at a single year (19992000: 41%), a decade (2000-2010: 201%), or the past 6 years (43%).

While the growth rate has been astonishing, Waxhaw remains vibrant and prosperous. We enjoy a quaint and vibrant downtown, a mixture of historic and diverse neighborhoods and a growing variety of recreational, art and cultural opportunities. Waxhaw continues to leverage all its assets to support the well-being of everyone.

Growing at such a rapid pace is challenging. The needs and wants of the community have grown exponentially. The town leadership has taken a proactive approach in planning for our future and we feel confident in our ability to better preserve, protect and enhance the quality of life for all residents. Waxhaw continues to be a diverse community. From South to North and West to East, Waxhaw is a mixture of cultures, ethnicities, ages, education, and incomes.

In the midst of this set of complexities, our biggest challenge as a community and a region is the ability to educate, inform and create and participate in open and respectful dialogue across the community about our future. If Waxhaw wants to tackle the challenges and opportunities in front of us, each of us individually and collectively need to ask ourselves, “Are we willing to open the lines of communication across the entire Town, to listen and be open to different points of view, to treat others with respect, to be tolerant?” “Do we want to show we care about each other?” “Do we want to begin to practice and live by our Town values?”

Our town is resilient and resourceful. The people of Waxhaw are strong, talented, and innovative. We cannot be solely concerned about the present at the expense of being generous about our future. Together we can weather the complex and costly challenges that growth brings. Together is the only way we will remain a community, maintain our small town charm, and support the well-being of every resident. Together every resident can enjoy a quality of life that is safe and secure.

We’ve all seen on the national level how divisive these times can be. For Waxhaw, we will show everyone what a strong community we are. How we care about each other. For 2018, I am asking all citizens, congregations, all groups and our neighbors to apply our values to actions in our community, to help recreate a region that is tolerant, caring, civil and one of action.

I love Waxhaw, and want every person to succeed and have a good life. It is my pleasure to serve as Mayor of the Town of Waxhaw.

Sincerely Yours,

Steve Maher

RICH HERITAGE Waxhaw’s rich heritage, has been preserved in local museums, parks and historical sites.

The most noteworthy native of this region is Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States. President Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area in 1767. An ongoing dispute centers on whether he was born in North Carolina or just to the south in South Carolina. He was born in one of two cabins, less than 100 yards apart - but because the state line ran between them, it’s unknown which state he was actually born in. Each state has monuments and historical markers along their borders making the claim of Jacksons’ birthplace.

Waxhaw takes its name from the Waxhaws, both the name for the area and the name for the Indian tribe that once inhabited it. The community dates back to the 1700’s, but it wasn't well known until 1888 when railroad tracks from Atlanta were laid. Tracks still run through the center of town today along the green, grassy strip dividing two rows of quaint specialty shops and restaurants. This area was home to the Waxhaw Indians, originally called Wisacky, long before the European settlers came to the area. The Waxhaw Indians were a small tribe (about 2,000) who lived in the Cane Creek area south of Waxhaw in small settlements of bark covered huts along the creeks. They were mostly hunter and gatherers but they did farm some small crops. They were connected with the neighboring Sugeree, and both were apparently related to the Catawba, and therefore were Siouan. Some scholars have suggested that the Waxhaws may have been a tribe of the Catawba rather than a separate people, given the similarity in what is known of the language and customs. The Waxhaw Indians were allied with the

Catawbas in their wars with the Cherokee and were almost wiped out in 1715 by the Yamasee War and by diseases brought by the early settlers to the area. Soon afterwards German, English, Scottish, Welsh and other European settlers arrived in the area to establish a settlement. The land was fertile and trade was made easy by the proximity of the Catawba River and the main trading path which ran from Petersburg, Virginia to Augusta, Georgia. The Town of Waxhaw was chartered in 1889, making it the third oldest town in Union County. Waxhaw is home to two area attractions where you can learn more about Andrew Jackson. One is the Museum of the Waxhaws, which is dedicated to the history of the Waxhaws region and the memory of our nation’s 7th President. The other is the Andrew Jackson State Park, which is located in nearby Lancaster, SC. The parks’ museum features exhibits about Andrew Jackson’s boyhood in the Waxhaw region. A popular feature of the park is the large bronze statue of a young Jackson atop a horse. n

Sometimes a bridge is more than just a wayto get from Point A to Point B. It can be a landmark like the pedestrian bridge located in the heart of downtown. This town icon was built in 1888 when the railroad company built a rail line to Atlanta. Today, many people, young and old, climb the stairs to the top so they can stand on the wooden planks of the bridge and watch as a train passes under their feet.

Water Tower

Military Wall of Honor

R.J. Belk Building

This iconic 49,000 stainless-steel structure looms over the downtown area with it’s close proximity to the intersection of NC 75 and NC 16 and the railroad tracks that run through the center of town. It was built in 1940. The tank was the town’s water supply for many years until new ground water tanks were built. This iconic tower was restored in 2013.

This all brick structure salutes the brave men and women who have defended the freedoms we enjoy. Situated at the center of town, annual Memorial Day and Veteran Day celebrations take place here as well as other special activities throughout the year. The wall is maintained by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 208 Waxhaw.

Located in the heart of downtown Waxhaw, directly across from the pedestrian bridge, this historic building was home of the Belk Store from 1894 to 1938. The building has served many purposes after the Belk store closed. Currently, the Waxhaw Woman’s Club rents the building for community events, private parties, and special occasions.

The well was originally dug circa 1900 to serve the trains and crews of the Depot and remained in use until the 1920’s. The current well replica, built in 1989, commemorates Waxhaw’s original community well which once stood near this spot. The large clay urn was originally used at the Rodman-Heath Mill which played a vital role in the town’s economy for many years.

The Duncan McDonald House was built by Waxhaw's first post-master in 1888 and now acts as a characteristic recreation venue. At one time the town’s early switchboard was operated from this house. My love for recreation started at a young age. Growing up on a farm, I have an appreciation for the outdoors and understand the value of balance in our lives. Being out in nature gives us that. It is very important to preserve our natural spaces and give the citizens open play areas.

Q & A with

Dena Sabinske

Waxhaw’s Director of Parks & Recreation

You were recently appointed as Waxhaw’s Parks and Recreation Director.  What is your background? How did you first get interested in being involved in Parks and Recreation?

A I have always worked in nonprofits, starting out in therapeutic

recreation as a team building rope course instructor. Then moving to Atlanta GA, I started at the Atlanta Metro YMCA with their afterschool/camps and ending up as the family/camp director for one of the facilities. After taking a year off after having my second oldest child, I joined Alpharetta Parks & Recreation. At Alpharetta, I ran their art center along with art enrichment classes, programs, workshops and camps. There I also facilitated a number of events for the town. After over 10 years in Atlanta, our family moved to south Charlotte, near Waxhaw. After taking a year off having my third child, I started working with the Town of Stallings. There I started the Stallings Parks & Recreation Department. Building the department from the ground up was challenging and rewarding. With the public and town support we built a beautiful community park. The Department was in final stage of planning Stallings second community park at Blair Mill Park property when I chose to bring my skills to the Waxhaw Parks & Recreation.

What will be the most interesting or challenging part of your new job?

A The most interesting part of my job is building the department to

meet the needs of the community. Doing that efficiently and effectively in a timely manner that our budget will allow will be the most challenging, but also the most rewarding to see the parks develop from concept to reality.

What are your goals for 2018 (and beyond)? What do you hope to accomplish in your new role?

A • Town Creek Park - Shelter with a playground and eventually a sensory garden

• Harvey Clay Nesbit Park - Restroom, concessions and storage building and then work on sidewalk connectivity • New multi-use fields behind the Cureton Town Center in partnership with the YMCA.

One of the most anticipated additions to Waxhaw is the YMCA. Can you give an updated status on this project?

A Like any complex project, there are numerous steps that must happen and they take some time. To put this in perspective:

• In March of 2015, Town of Waxhaw and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte reached an agreement on a letter of intent for a YMCA in Waxhaw • On December 30, 2015 the Town of Waxhaw and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte reached agreement on what is known as the Future Hall YMCA. The details were finalized and the joint use agreement was signed between the YMCA and the Town of Waxhaw in June 2016. • In 2016, the Town and the YMCA initiated a mandatory process with the US Army Corp of Engineers on the site. This process was completed in April 2017. • During 2016 and going into 2017, the Town and YMCA have collaborated with surrounding tenants to determine final site boundaries, which affected important aspects of the project, including parking and related joint access. All of these steps were necessary to get to the place we are now: • The Town is in the initial phase of scoping the field portion of the initiative. This is a necessary step to be incorporated into the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan financial process. • The YMCA is completing a review of its association’s entire facility footprint, which includes the development plan for the Waxhaw / Hall YMCA. • The YMCA has begun to assess its next phase of Hall YMCA fundraising.

• A downtown community park, along with linear parks for downtown

• There is strong YMCA interest in developing a full program plan to maximize the use of the town park facilities upon their completion (anticipated in 2019).

• Possible partnership with South Piedmont Community College on a park property that will service our citizen’s needs and beyond.

• The YMCA is currently working on a plan to recruit community leaders to form a provisional Hall YMCA board.

• Develop a trail system throughout the Town of Waxhaw in partnership with the Carolina Thread Trail.

• Together we are evaluating and confirming timelines and projections for the entire length of the agreement. The Town will provide updates as continued progress is made.

• Building Waxhaw park system to meet the community’s needs.

Incubator Combines Diverse Entrepreneurs Under Same Roof

The Waxhaw Entrepreneurs (WE) Business Incubator works with small businesses in all stages of development to provide counseling and guidance. [ Written by Penelope McClenny ]

Karen Johnson is a Waxhawarea business proponent who is also

an ardent advocate of change. "I don't like repetition," confesses the former high school teacher. "That drives me crazy. I like constant change. " Five years ago, that personal mantra led Johnson to create the Waxhaw Entrepreneurs (WE) Business Incubator, a hub of office space and business networking activity located in the heart of this quickly growing and changing town. After researching the local business environment, she discovered that Waxhaw entrepreneurs could benefit from additional support. "It really intrigues me to help people find what they're good at, what they like to do," said Johnson, who previously taught home and family living. After launching the program within the Waxhaw Business Association in 2012, the incubator quickly grew, and recently received its own status as a non-profit helping small businesses. Now, WE offers a wide variety of resources for the new or up-and-coming business owner. That process begins with a free consultation. "We sit down and give you an evaluation form and you tell us your idea," Johnson said, adding that, "you don't have to have a prepared business plan." Johnson and other volunteers then assess the evaluation form. While WE clients include a wide variety of business, "We try to make good fits for the town as far as new start-ups go," Johnson said. While that connection can help jump-start a new business, WE has also proven to be a strong resource for existing businesses. Local resident Wil Dees met Johnson a few months after opening a business providing non-medication therapy for conditions such as chronic and acute pain, anxiety, depression and insomnia. "A few months in I met Karen Johnson at a WE plug-in networking breakfast," Dees said, adding that Karen immediately began connecting Dees with potential clients for her Healing Stim business. "I gained four clients through her."

Waxhaw • North Carolina

Pictured L to R are WE Board Members: Karen Johnson, Wil Dees, Curt White, Janet Baker, Jeanne Pritt, and Jim Weiland

In addition to providing Dees with contacts throughout the community, WE resources gave Dees access to facilities for office work and client meetings as well as a business address. “Prior to having access to the WE office space, I had to either meet at non-healthcare practitioner prospects or clients’ homes or meet at my home. Neither situation was ideal," Dees, said. "I also benefit from

collaborating with other WE clients in sharing business optimization ideas." While many of the services provided by WE are free, the organization does offer several levels of membership that provide additional benefits. For example, a $50 Community Membership provides a listing in the online Waxhaw Business Directory. For an additional rental fee, members can also host quarterly events in the facility's co-working space. Additional levels of memberships provide such benefits as a physical

address for business mail, an office land line phone, and access to a wide variety of coaching and mentoring services. "We do not graduate anyone that is not ready to go, and we also don't let them stalemate,” Johnson said. “Every three months we sit down with them, we go through an evaluation, we talk to them. We try to go with them as they go through their journey." That includes frequent interactions with established business owners such as Janet Baker, who along with her husband, Kyle, owns and operates Sospeso Coffee Roasters. While their company's main focus includes commercial and online sales, the WE offices provided the perfect location for their retail business. Now, those visiting or working at WE can enjoy a cup of coffee while networking and sharing ideas. "It was really hard for me to grow the commercial accounts on the business without a retail location," Baker said, adding that the move "within two months, tripled business." And that's only the beginning of the benefits of their partnerships with WE, Janet Baker said. "I'm around a bunch of entrepreneurs and we bounce ideas off one another," she said. "It's just a great community spirit, which I really enjoy." The location is also a great asset to another business idea important to the Bakers: giving back. They often donate coffee to non - profit organizations, including bi - monthly contributions to a shelter serving victims of domestic violence. "There are so many different ways to reach out to the commu-, openness, collaboration and accessibility all while enjoying a ‘pitch-free’ environment.

nity from this space," she said. Baker's dedication to community service is a vision shared among many WE members and volunteers. Joshua Gunter, a senior product manager at a software company, moved to the Waxhaw area in mid-2017 from northern Virginia, a large metropolitan area rich with shared spaces and resources for start-up business entrepreneurs. While searches revealed similar services in Charlotte, he was relieved to learn WE could provide professional work space much closer to his Waxhaw-area home. "When I first started looking, it was kind of disheartening to see that the closest one was 45 minutes away and really a lot more expensive than I was looking for," he said. "I think it’s a really exciting opportunity for a lot of people to get out there and network at a low cost."

Gunter appreciates the shared work space, which provides not only a change of scenery for those who work from home, but also a professional backdrop for client meetings and video conferences. He helped WE streamline the process by developing an online platform to schedule use of the shared spaces. That type of organization will help further streamline a growing local business hub that now hosts a wide variety of entrepreneurs. "It's always interesting to me how different everybody is in a co-working space," Gunter said. "Some do software stuff, some are product-based." That type of variety, from coffee roasters to software developers to a young man working to promote his lawn care business, is exactly the exciting pulse that helps keep the town's business landscape beating, and remain a perfect fit for Karen Johnson's desire for frequent change. "The beautiful part of an incubator and what's around you is you fit what's around you," she said, "not what's right or wrong." n WE is located at 216 West North Main Street, Waxhaw, NC For more information, call 980-352-8920 or email

Downtown Pedestrian and Bicycle Facility Enhancements The goals of this $1 million investment in downtown are to: • Encourage a pedestrian / bike friendly environment • Support redevelopment of the downtown Waxhaw businesses • Increase connectivity between the businesses, parks, historic landmarks, and local neighborhoods • Enhance safety for all modes of transportation

Downtown Waxhaw is the heart of the Waxhaw community and its most significant cultural resource. The walkable downtown offers a true sense of place that does not exist in the surrounding communities. While downtown boasts these unique strengths, there are many opportunities for improvement, specifically related to pedestrian and bike connectivity and safety.

In 2016 the Town of Waxhaw was awarded a $1 million grant of federal dollars to help fund various improvements and enhancements to the prized historic downtown such as: 4 Parking

The design process began in July 2017 with input by local citizens, businesses, and property owners playing an important part of the planning process.

Improvements to the downtown area have been approved and include new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike racks and parking options among other enhancements. Multi-modal transportation improvements will enhance safety for all travel modes, including the increasing number of bicyclists from neighboring towns.

Members, Union Co. Assoc. of Realtors and Carolinas MLS

“As Waxhaw’s population grows and we see a steady increase in bicycle and pedestrian traffic, it’s important to improve our transportation facilities in response to that evolving footprint,” commented Curt White, Downtown Development Manager for the Town of Waxhaw.

In conjunction with the TAP Grant improvements, 95 streetlights will also be replaced throughout the area. The streetlights component is not a part of the TAP Grant but will be coordinated and accomplished at the same time to maximize the impact of the grant’s implementation.

Construction is set to begin in late 2018.

Puppy Tips

[ By Dr. Susan Bonilla, MS, CVA, CCRP, CACP ]

Congratulations on your new puppy! You did your

research on different breeds, decided between a reputable breeder and adoption, and found that perfect puppy to bring into your home. Now what? To help you prepare for the first few weeks with your new puppy, I have prepared some helpful tips to guide your transition into pet parenthood.

It is important that your bounding puppy has a safe and secure environment to play, eat, and sleep. The easiest way to do this is to inspect your home from your puppy’s perspective. Get around on all fours and see if your puppy could be hurt by a sharp edge as well as chew, lick, or eat something they shouldn’t -- furniture, electrical cords, shoes, remotes, medicine - if a puppy can put their mouth on it, they will. Be sure to secure any furniture that could topple over such as bookcases or TVs and put away any trash cans that a curious puppy could get into. Lastly, make good use of baby gates to ensure your puppy doesn’t go somewhere off-limits.

First Night

A puppy’s first night in your home can be a bit challenging if not prepared. Remember, from your puppy’s point of view he or she has been removed from the comfort of his or her mother and siblings. Whining, howling, and squealing are all normal puppy behaviors as they signaled to the mother not to forget about them when the mother would leave for long periods. This behavior continues that very first night, except now cries for help are aimed at you. To ensure your puppy’s anxiety is reduced and remains safe through the night, I advise using an appropriately sized (not too big they can potty in one corner and lie in another) and comfortable crate as your puppy’s sleep den. You can either put the crate in your bedroom or by the bedroom doorway so your new puppy knows you’re not too far away. He or she will still cry initially but just ignore them (I know it’s hard) until they settle down and over time, your puppy will sleep more soundly.

Quality Puppy Food

While there are a lot of foods to choose from, it is vital you select a quality puppy food targeting growth suited to the type of dog, according to the size of the breed and age, sensitivities or the particular features of the breed. Your veterinarian is your best guide for selecting food and feeding guidelines for your hungry puppy.

For more help with your new puppy, please consult with your veterinarian as he or she is your best source for accurate information.
