On behalf of the Waxhaw Business Association (WBA), I am pleased to welcome you to the Town of Waxhaw.

We invite you to experience and enjoy “The Haw’s” many events and attractions throughout the year. We also thank you for shopping in our local stores, for satisfying your tastebuds at our many outstanding dining establishments, and for hiring our local service providers to meet your personal, family, and business needs.

About the cover

If you are reading “Welcome to Waxhaw” magazine, you likely picked up a copy from a local business or found it on our website, You might be a Waxhaw resident or a guest visiting from the Queen City. Or you could be from just about anywhere in the United States or around the world. Many of our visitors - and residents are.

To outsiders, Waxhaw exudes small town charm, but we are not a “sleepy little town” by any means. We are a vibrant, growing community, and the mindsets of our residents and business owners are anything but small. The Town of Waxhaw has plans for 2017 and beyond to grow in a smart and sustainable way that ensures our town remains a great place to live, work, dine, shop, and play.

The WBA exists to support Waxhaw’s local businesses and to be a pillar in the community. We are a business-minded organization whose objective is to provide value to local businesses and to the Town of Waxhaw. WBA members play a tremendous role in Waxhaw’s continued smart growth and development.

The WBA supports programs such as Waxhaw Entrepreneurs (WE) that guide new businesses like Created in the Carolinas through an incubator program located in the heart of downtown Waxhaw. This program is open to anyone who wants to open a small business to serve the Waxhaw area and WE’s office space is open to all WBA members to use as a membership perk.

The Town of Waxhaw was recently named by Nerdwallet and other publications as one of the best places to live and to raise a family in North Carolina, and local businesses are crucial to maintaining that distinction. WBA members are leaders in business and in the Waxhaw community. We are a tight knit, yet welcoming group. We like to get things done.

The WBA is proud of our contribution to Waxhaw’s ongoing success, and we are proud to endorse one another, as well.

We are grateful for your continued support of Waxhaw’s local businesses and for helping make it possible for our small town to continue pursuing its big dreams.

Sincerely Yours,

Jimmy Grappone

President of the WBA

Waxhaw is proud to be a part of the Carolina Thread Trail. It’s a regional network of miles and miles of connected greenways, trails and blueways across 15 counties in North Carolina and South Carolina. There are several access points throughout the community. Waxhaw received a $150,000 Carolina Thread Trail Grant to help build the breathtaking Cross-State Suspension Bridge and its 1.6-mile section of the trail in the H.C. Nesbit Park. This 170 foot long suspension bridge connects the Twelve Mile Creek Greenway in Waxhaw to the Twelve Mile Creek Trail in Lancaster County, SC, creating four continuous miles of pathway. You can access this great landmark by parking at the back of H.C. Nesbit Park (1304 H.C. Nesbit Park Drive, Waxhaw) and hiking or mountain biking a quarter-mile scenic natural wooded trail. Waxhaw’s rich heritage, has been preserved in local museums, parks and historical sites. Waxhaw takes its name from the Waxhaws, both the name for the area and the name for the Indian tribe that once inhabited it. The community dates back to the 1700’s, but it wasn't well known until 1888 when railroad tracks from Atlanta were laid. Tracks still run through the center of town today along the green, grassy strip dividing two rows of quaint specialty shops and restaurants. This area was home to the Waxhaw Indians long before the European settlers came to the area. They were connected with the neighboring Sugeree, and both were apparently related to the Catawba, and therefore were Siouan. The Waxhaw Indians were allied with the Catawbas in their wars with the Cherokee and were almost wiped out in 1715 by the Yamasee War and by diseases brought by the early settlers to the area. Soon afterwards German, English, Scottish, Welsh and other European settlers arrived in the area to establish a settlement. The land was fertile and trade was made easy by the proximity of the Catawba River and the main trading path which ran from Petersburg, Virginia to

Augusta, Georgia. The Town of Waxhaw was chartered in 1889, making it the third oldest town in Union County. The most noteworthy native of this region is Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States. President Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area in 1767. An ongoing dispute centers on whether he was born in North Carolina or just to the south in South Carolina. He was born in one of two cabins, less than 100 yards apart - but because the state line ran between them, it’s unknown which state he was actually born in. He lived in North Carolina until the age of 21 when he moved west to Tennessee. Waxhaw is home to two area attractions where you can learn more about Andrew Jackson. One is the Museum of the Waxhaws, which is dedicated to the history of the Waxhaws region and the memory of our nation’s 7th President. The other is the Andrew Jackson State Park, which is located in nearby Lancaster, SC. The parks’ museum features exhibits about Andrew Jackson’s boyhood in the Waxhaw region. n

Pedestrian Bridge Sometimes a bridge is more than just a way to get from Point A to Point B. It can be a landmark like the pedestrian bridge located in the heart of downtown. This town icon was built in 1888 when the railroad company built a rail line to Atlanta. Today, many people, young and old, climb the stairs to the top so they can stand on the wooden planks of the bridge and watch as a train passes under their feet.

Water Tower This 49,000 stainless-steel structure looms over the downtown area with it’s close proximity to Main Street and the railroad tracks that run through the center of town. It was built in 1940. The tank was the town’s water supply for many years until new ground water tanks were built. This iconic tower was restored in 2013.

This all brick structure salutes the brave men and women who have defended the freedoms we enjoy. Commemorative bricks and ceramic markers create an enclosure around the flags. Situated at the center of town, near the intersection of two busy State Highways, there are currently over 1000 names on the wall. Annual Memorial Day and Veteran Day celebrations take place at this location as well as other special activities throughout the year. The wall is maintained by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 208 Waxhaw. 100 Block of N. Main Street | Waxhaw, NC 28173 The well was originally dug circa 1900 to serve the trains and crews of the Depot and remained in use r until the 1920’s. The current well replica, built in all of Hono Military W 1989, commemorates Waxhaw’s original community well which once stood near this spot. The large clay urn was originally used at the Rodman-Heath Mill which played a vital role in the town’s economy for many years.

Located in the heart of downtown Waxhaw, directly across from the pedestrian bridge, this historic building was home of the Belk Store from 1894 to 1938. The building served many purposes after the Belk store closed, most notable Gambles Drug Store. In 1970, the Belk family donated the building to the Waxhaw Woman’s Club and restorations were made. Currently, the Waxhaw Woman’s Club rents out the building for community events, private parties, and special occasions.

Catch some air on your skateboard. Ride a horse-drawn carriage. Or simply listen to some free music while eating a funnel cake. [By Penelope McClenny] rom a cross-state stroll along a suspension bridge to hot coffee with friends in a historic home to a battle of the best BBQ, Waxhaw’s Parks and Recreation Department offers activities for all interests and ages. Established in March 2015, the new department hit the ground running to improve and increase opportunities for local citizens to enjoy the town's numerous and varied public areas and to become a strong reflection of Waxhaw’s focus on Heritage, Activities and Well Being (HAW). "I think people are still learning that we have a department," Director Natalie Jackson said. While the agency’s existence may come as a surprise to some, many of its events and facilities already stand as well-established fixtures in the community. “The town of Waxhaw is known for having great events," Jackson said. "When you look at what the citizens say they like about Waxhaw, events are always at

the top of the list." Topping that list includes the annual Independence Day celebration, which opens with a morning parade, spills over into an afternoon beach party, and closes the evening with a fireworks show. The department also hosts music concerts through its “Jammin’ By the Tracks” Friday night program from June through midAugust. Combined with a spring art festival, a holiday lights festival, Memorial and Veteran’s Day ceremonies and a barbeque competition, the town sponsors 12 events while helping support more than four dozen others, Jackson said. The strong enthusiasm for these communityfocused events and open areas has helped Jackson and other city officials get an idea for the types of future parks and recreation improvements and additions town residents may support. Waxhaw • North Carolina

The public’s strong interest in walking trails, for example, inspired the department to immediately pursue the ambitious goal of securing the grants and permits to construct a 170-foot suspension bridge across 12 Mile Creek. After receiving a grant for the Carolina Thread Trail, Waxhaw Parks and Recreation helped guide the planning and construction of the bridge and its connector trail, located near the back of H.C. Nesbit Park. The structure now stands as a shining jewel in the town’s parks and recreation properties. “The idea was to connect North Carolina to South Carolina. It’s a very majestic looking structure,” Jackson said, adding that negotiating regulations between two states made the project a challenge, but one well worth the effort. “In the end, it turned out to be a wonderful project.” That project also stands as a strong example of one part of the department’s master plan – linking as much of the city as possible through pedestrian and bike-friendly trails. “We have an overall goal of connecting Waxhaw up with trails. Our dream is for you to be able to jump on your bicycle and go for miles,” Jackson said. “Trails nationwide are the number one thing people are asking for. It’s a place to meet with others. It’s a place to get away from the hustle and bustle.” Waxhaw • North Carolina

One key to the department’s early successes – and an integral part of its future plans – is developing strong connections with community leaders and developers, Jackson said. Collaborating with homeowners’ associations, for instance, can help connect their communities with town trails, she said. In addition, maintaining a strong relationship with the Waxhaw Athletic Association helps expand recreational sport opportunities for local residents. That type of collaboration brings great results, said Betsy Williams, a Parks and Recreation Department volunteer and mother of two, including a 7-year-old son who participates in every sport offered by the association. Improvements are “evident at Nesbit Park. They’re really working on improving the soccer fields,” Williams said, adding that “Town Creek Park is really a hidden little gem that leads to many trails.” These enhancements often increase traffic on trails and at parks, which Williams said has a trickle-down effect for continually improving the town’s public areas. While Jackson looks forward to citizens increasing their use of public areas, a couple of department properties already host steady programs and visitors.

The Meeting Place, for instance, is a Parks and Recreation property that can accommodate up to 25 guests and is often used as a meeting venue as well as hosting Santa and Mrs. Claus during the holidays. One of the most popular venues includes the Duncan McDonald House, a 1940’s themed structure whose age predates the town’s establishment by one year. Recently renovated and added to the Parks and Recreation Department, the house is currently used for senior citizen programming, including coffee and visits surrounded by its period-authentic décor. “We had fun with putting local artifacts in the house so that our older citizens who grew up in Waxhaw can come back and relive some memories,” Jackson said. Just outside the house and under the town water tower sits another popular Parks and Recreation property – the gravel lot often used to host music and other activities during town events but also available to rent. While all of these properties have drawn visitors and created positive buzz throughout town, Jackson said one of the most anticipated partnerships includes the department’s collaboration with the YMCA to bring a facility to the town. “The town board meeting room was absolutely packed, and everybody in that room was delighted and excited and inquisitive about a YMCA” Jackson said. Town research reported that many citizens are already members of the organization and voiced support for a local branch. “The question is, ‘When are we getting it? When are we getting it?’ which is a great problem to have,” she said.

Those plans include partnering with the YMCA to develop a facility and public park on a 30-acre site, Jackson said, and bringing even more opportunities to the citizens of Waxhaw. These efforts combined with many more in the Parks and Recreation Department’s future plans are building momentum toward the overall goal shared by Jackson and many Waxhaw citizens: designing a municipality offering urban amenities with a small-town feel. “They want city-ness, but they don’t want to live in the city,” the tone Jackson said she and town officials gleaned from community research as well as phone calls and citizen emails. Williams, the Parks and Recreation volunteer, said improving public facilities helps support one of the most sought-after opportunities in Waxhaw or any community: fun family activities provided for free or minimal cost. “I think that’s why people move to certain areas, – for their Parks and Recreation opportunities” she said. Considering that selling point and the Parks and Recreation Department’s ambitious plans for the future, including establishing 11-acres per 1,000 residents and developing a town-wide greenway system with access points accessible within a ½ mile of every residence, the town of Waxhaw is poised to become an even more popular, accessible destination. “I am really excited to see where this department goes in the next 2-5 years,” Williams said. “To spend your Saturday in downtown Waxhaw, where you go to a park and go to an event and go to a restaurant and shop, how great is that?” n

What do you enjoy about being Mayor?

a terrific community. As Mayor you get the opportuniA tyWetohave work on projects that help make Waxhaw an even better

community. And the best part is, I get to see the difference up close! I also have the opportunity to build relationships across the entire community at all levels. And there are a ton of fun things that I get to do like going into schools and reading to students, participating in Cub Scout Meetings, ribbon cutting ceremonies and honoring our veterans. And there is not a day that goes by where I don’t learn something new, be it about Waxhaw, the region, or the State. Life happens here!

"Waxhaw experience". What is that experience - ONE Waxhaw, a Town that is rich in Heritage and a Town that will add to that Heritage every day, a Town that WILL CONTINUE TO bustle with Activities and events across our Town as we grow, and a Town that will continue to strive to offer a sense of Well-being for everyone in Waxhaw!

I’ll make your home buying/selling process easy.

What do you hope to accomplish for Waxhaw in the next year or two?

We have some very complex challenges and issues. And our A focus on those issues has one goal in mind - enhancing that

The Waxhaw Board of Commissioners believes that all citizens have the right to participate in making town decisions. By being appointed to advisory Boards & Committees, citizens are able to help make valuable decisions about and for the Town of Waxhaw. The Board of Commissioners make appointments at different times. For more info:

If you could change one thing in Waxhaw, what would it be?

Although it's totally out of our control, but something we A continue to work to alleviate - I wish we could better control

the timing of the train traffic and really wish they would not stop on the tracks for long periods of time during everyone’s drive home!

And that gets to the one thing I want to change - how the region looks at our transportation and traffic challenges.

What is the single biggest step you feel the town could take within the next year to improve the quality of life for residents?

What we have to be aware of - not only of what’s good for A Waxhaw today, tomorrow and next year, but focus on what’s

good for the community 10, 20, 30, years from now. Protecting our heritage while providing for parks, trails, roads, the environment are real long term projects. Look at the Cross-State Connection Bridge. As part of the Carolina Thread Trail System, the bridge connects two states and multiple communities and is part of a system that connects our community and will eventually allow for residents to safely walk, bike, or hike all over Waxhaw and beyond. Some of these things I may not see the immediate benefit. But I truly believe that our fundamental duty is to take care of what we have been given and pass it on to the next generation in better condition! Waxhaw • North Carolina

The Waxhaw Police Department received the SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program) recognition award from OSHA. The award is given to those who maintain an injury and illness rate below the national average, display management commitment and employee involvement in safety and health, and implement required safety and health programs. Having certification in this program saves taxpayers money, because worker compensation rates are really low, allowing towns to spend money on other important priorities.

Big Enough To Serve You, Small Enough To Know You! The CodeRED system provides town officials the ability to quickly communicate timesensitive messages (such as a boil-water notice, missing persons, natural disasters or road closures) to targeted areas or to all residents within the Town limits via voice, email and text messaging. A pre-recorded message is delivered describing the situations in the affected area possibly including instructions requiring action on the part of the recipient. Once the situation is remedied, another call will be placed to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and that normal activities can be resumed.

Public safety officials across the United States have credited CodeRED notifications for many successful events including locating missing children, apprehending wanted criminals and issuing timely evacuations.

Historic Downtown Waxhaw is undoubtedly popular – just ask the thousands of people who line the streets every July for the Independence Day Celebration parade. But this recognition goes well beyond the region: Waxhaw Main Street has once again been designated an accredited Main Street America program for meeting certain, rigorous standards set by the National Main Street Center. Historic Downtown Waxhaw is one of the community’s biggest assets. It’s an authentic part of the town that offers a sense of place. It is the location where the community gathers and celebrates. Waxhaw was designated as a Small Town Main Street Community back in 2009 by the North Carolina Department of Commerce and joined a growing number of North Carolina communities focused on downtown revitalization. In 2015, Waxhaw graduated to the full Main Street Program designation. To gain national accreditation, Waxhaw Main Street was evaluated on 10 performance standards that helped demonstrate it is “building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts,” such as committing over $1 Million in downtown street, sidewalk, pedestrian, and bicycle improvements. Waxhaw strives to build long-lasting 28

Waxhaw • North Carolina

relationships with downtown merchants and create community events that will attract residents and tourists to historic downtown. The Main Street America accreditation says that great things are being accomplished in an innovative approach. In 2016, Main Street Committee volunteers worked with the Main Street Program Manager, Curt White, to achieve many exciting things for the town. Just to name a few: 4 Publication of Waxhaw’s first Business Recruitment Brochure 4 Release of the new Main Street Waxhaw App for iPhone and Android 4 Execution of a contract with a retail recruitment consultant

4 Planning and execution of a parking study for downtown 4 Continuation of the wayfinding signage program

4 Downtown street, sidewalk, pedestrian, and bicycle improvements. Made possible by a 50% matching grant through NCDOT (Design work to begin Fall 2017, Construction 2018)

So what’s next? A new Main Street Advisory Board (MSAB) has been formed with plans for 2017 including: • Make recommendations on unfunded commitments: - Permanent Location for the Waxhaw Farmers' Market - Downtown Park

• Coordinate Existing Projects: - $1,000,000 Downtown Ped, Bike, and Street Improvement Project - Streetlights - Private Sector Construction Projects

• Develop Economic Development Strategies for Downtown: - Business recruitment, retention, and expansion (ex. incentives, promotions), - Infill development - Identify public-private partnerships - Identify the best use for downtown town-owned real estate

Continue to partner with the Town of Waxhaw Events Division on four major events: - Fright Night - Christmas Living Windows - Easter Egg Hunt - June Farmers’ Market Event

Pain Relieving Options for Your Senior Pet by Dr. Susan Bonilla, MS, CVA, CCRP, CACP Old age is not a disease, but as we get older we may develop conditions that are symptoms of old age. Like us, our pets can also suffer from the same old age related conditions.

With new integrative veterinary advancements we can now help our pets better enjoy their golden years.

Chiropractic care is used for disorders of joints specifically associated with the spine. The goal is to maintain normal range of motion of affected joints, relieve pain, and promote normal nerve function coming out of the spine.

Nutritional supplements provide the body with essential nutrients that help support healthy function of organs, skin, and ligaments and tendons. There are some companies that even combine traditional nutritional supplements with herbs to give our pets a more enhanced nutritional supplement.

Platelet Rich Plasma uses the liquid and platelet portion of your pet’s own blood to promote healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. It is commonly used to help ease arthritis pain and help reduce the need for oral pain medication.

Acupuncture uses small sterile needles to stimulate the body to produce its own endorphins (our natural pain killer). It is most commonly used to decrease arthritic pain, help with decreased nerve sensation, and improve overall wellness. Other uses can include reducing inappropriate urination, urinary incontinence, and anxiety.

Physical Therapy, or Canine Rehabilitation, helps address the illnesses or injuries that limit your pet’s ability to move and perform normal functional activities in their daily lives. Physical therapy is also used when surgery might not be an option or after surgery if the pet is having a hard time recovering.

Laser Therapy is the use of light energy to stimulate healing and minimize pain. Laser treatments reduce tissue swelling and improve circulation, stimulate the immune system, relax muscles, increase tendon and wound strength, increase mobility, speed bone repair, and stimulate nerve regeneration. It is a great alternative option for pets that cannot take NSAIDS for pain control.

As with any disease, the sooner it is detected the better. Early detection of old age related disease allows your pet to receive pain relief sooner, and it is when the above treatment options work the best. Make sure to take your senior pets to their doctor every six months for wellness care. n

Dr. Susan Bonilla is the owner of Passionate Paws Animal Hospital, an integrative practice, offering traditional and complementary treatment options. She is certified in acupuncture, chiropractic, and physical therapy. You can reach her at 704-256-7576 or e-mail at Hello@PassionatePaws
