Welcome to Mint Hill Mint Hill is a community of friendly people, smiling faces and thriving businesses. We are situated next to Charlotte, one of the fastest-growing cities in America, and yet here it still feels like a small town where everyone is willing to help out however they can. At the Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce, our mission is to promote and collaborate with businesses to cultivate a growing and connected community. It is our desire to connect with every business and organization in Mint Hill to foster positive collaboration. We are blessed to work with great members who work alongside each other to give of their time, talents and resources to help the business community thrive while giving back to the community through scholarships, charity and great community events to bring us all together as neighbors. We provide a variety of networking, advertising, educational, and Paige McKinney social opportunities throughout the year. In the past year, the Chamber has done great things under the direction of an outstanding Board of Directors and a fantastic group of dedicated volunteers. One of our endeavors was moving to a bigger location to accommodate our growing membership. The space includes a boardroom and office space available for use to our members and the community. We began several new events and programs last year like our Women’s Spring Tea & Brunch, The Pop-Up Christmas Shop, The Cornhole Tournament, The Jr. Ambassador Program and a renewed Chamber Ambassador Program. Our vision is to be the influential organization to showcase members and attract new businesses to stimulate future growth and prosperity. As we move forward we are implementing even more events and programs to serve our members and the Mint Hill community. We host events like Coffee Connections, where business leaders can come to network before they start the day and the Shop Small, Live Local campaign to support our local small businesses during the holiday season and much more. Our Chamber staff, including myself and the Board of Directors, are available to visitors and residents who seek information regarding our community. We want to be a resource for not only our members but for the entire Town of Mint Hill. If there is ever a need, I hope you’ll reach out to us so we can grow together. Mint Hill is an excellent place to do business. I encourage you to become active in our Chamber and the rest of the community. You’re invited to stop by our new office located at 7900 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd. Bldg 2 Ste B and visit our website, www.minthillchamberofcommerce.com to learn more about how the Chamber can help you. You can also find us on Facebook to stay updated on our upcoming events!

STEVEN’S CREEK NATURE PRESERVE

Mecklenburg county’s newest nature preserve, spanning 281 acres, will provide a wonderful place for quiet recreation and nature education when construction is completed and it opens in mid-2020. Situated just inside I-485 and only minutes from downtown Mint Hill, the entrance will be along Thompson Road. The project, made possible because of Mecklenburg County’s 2008 Parks Bond Package, boasts a price tag of $7.2 million and will feature a 12,000 square foot Visitor Center building that will provide nature-based programs and education. The educational programs will be a big draw, covering all kinds of wildlife found at the preserve: insects, birds and plants. Once completed, visitors will be able to lose themselves in the tranquil scenery of rich forest, flora and fauna. Walking trails will meander through a forest of mixed pine and mixed pine hardwoods that were

planted or originated within the last 50 years. Portions of Stevens Creek flows through the nature preserve and into Goose Creek. Goose Creek flows east into Union County and empties into the Yadkin River watershed. Goose Creek provides habitat for a rare, federally endangered mussel known as the Carolina Heelsplitter. This will be the 4th regional nature preserve and will serve the Southeast portion of the county. The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department’s Division of Nature Preserves and Natural Resources currently manages over 7,600 acres of parkland that provide wildlife habitat, protect high quality forests, provide water quality protection for our lakes and streams and countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors with 35 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, fishing piers, canoe/kayak launches and wildlife viewing areas, according to www.mecknc.gov.

One unusual thing about Goose Creek is that it’s one of only a few places in the world where the Carolina heelsplitter is found. The heelsplitter is a species of freshwater mussel that’s one of the rarest animals on earth and is on the federal “endangered” list. This mussel was once widely found throughout the Catawba and Pee Dee river basins, but now only six known populations exist. Goose Creek is one of those spots where the mussel is found, and portions of the creek are recognized as a critical habitat for the freshwater mussel.

The Town of Mint Hill was honored to host “The Moving Wall in October, 2019. This mobile half-size replica of the Washington D.C. memorial to the 2.7 million men and women who served in Vietnam, is etched with over 58,000 names of service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thousands of people came out to pay their respects to those killed during the Vietnam war. While in Mint Hill, the six-foot panels of the replica wall were available for public viewing 24 hours a day. Many people volunteered to bring this to the Charlotte area and make this a memorable event. The first Moving Wall went on display in October 1984 in Tyler, Texas. Two structures now travel the USA from April through November. Since its existence, millions of people have visited the Moving Wall. It has been to every state, including Hawaii and Alaska. What makes a Purple Heart City?

50+ Shops Under One Roof

You may have noticed signs located near the entrance of the town limits identifying Mint Hill as a Purple Heart City and wondered what that means. What makes Mint Hill a “Purple Heart City”? Is the mayor or other town resident a Purple Heart recipient? Does the town’s population have a larger than average percentage of veterans? Purple Heart cities and counties are part of the Purple Heart Trail, which “creates a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges and other monuments giving tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. Any city, county, state sports team, or any other entity can become a “Purple Heart” entity. There are currently designated sections in 45 states as well as Guam.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use and is a medal awarded to all U.S. military members who have been wounded or killed in combat. It was first created by General George Washington in 1782 and was known as the Badge of Military Merit. circa 1900 Ira V. Ferguson, the father of seven, built this country store in the early 20th century and ran it for a decade before dying of pneumonia at age 38. He kept milk, butter, eggs, cheese, fruit, vegetables, tobacco and sodas in the cold storage cellar, cooled by a big block of ice. Sometimes he treated his children to NuGrape soda, passed from one to the other while sitting in a circle.

It’s time to take another ‘step into history’ and preserve the almost bygone era of farming in the Mint Hill area. It’s time to raise a barn! The barn will not only be a place to teach and remind visitors of the important role farming had in the area, but also a place for families to gather and celebrate special occasions, and even a place for a good ol’ fashioned hoe down! We’re asking you to be a friend of the village and contribute to the Barn Raising! Your donation of any amount will make a difference in preserving the rich history of our community.

FARMERS MARKET Home-grown and home-made can be found at the market, local vendors, crafters, bakers and farmers sell their goods each Saturday from May through October.

BARN Raising COMING TO THE MINT HILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY By Ed Berti and Becky Griffin Originally published in the Mint Hill Times

T

he dream of the Mint Hill Historical Society is coming true! For about ten years plans have been brewing, money donated and set aside, and artifacts collected with high hopes of a barn to add to the Carl J. McEwen Village to show the rich agricultural history of Mint Hill. We have searched out barns in this area and beyond in hopes of finding an 1880 to 1930 era barn in good condition to relocate to our Village. Interviews with locals over the past 30 years show cotton was a major crop in the 1830’s through 1850’s and agriculture was the chief industry of North Carolina. Corn was the most important single crop grown for both human and animal consumption. Horses, mules, cattle, pigs, poultry and humans all

consumed corn in some form or another during this time in our history. Tenant farming flourished from 1865 to well into the new century. Share cropping and tenant farming were a new system. This large group of unskilled workers provided labor on farms in Mint Hill and around the country. The Mint Hill Historical Society is collecting stories of the tenant farmer and hopes to tell this story when the barn is complete. Many folks still remember the many dairies that sprang up in Mint Hill in the early forties. Holstein cows and tall silos dotted the horizon and some still stand as a reminder. So much has changed as new families have arrived. Farms have disappeared and neighborhoods have

appeared. Who would guess less than 100 years ago Mint Hill was considered a farming community and the average farm was 200 acres. Showing and displaying the history of farming has long been the dream of the Mint Hill Historical Society. Agriculture was the basic economic pursuit from which most local citizens gained their livelihood for generations. The Mint Hill Historical Society began a little more than thirty years ago with the idea to preserve the small office of Dr. Ayer Whitley who came to Mint Hill in 1908 to treat an epidemic of typhoid fever. Soon after announcing the restoration of this building which had originally been built for Dr. John McCamie DeArmon in the

NAVIGATING ROUNDABOUTS Roundabouts are designed to make intersections safe and efficient. According to the Insurance Institute, they can result in fewer and less severe accidents. The institute adds that roundabouts reduce traffic congestion by eliminating the need for vehicles to stop, and because they slow down existing traffic, the chances of a fatal accident decline significantly. Despite the fact roundabouts are actually pretty easy to navigate, many drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are unfamiliar with them. There are two types of roundabouts, single lane and double lane, and here are the basics of safely navigating them both.

DOUBLE-LANE ROUNDABOUTS The signage for an upcoming double-lane roundabout looks like a yellow “Roundabout Ahead” sign and a black and white lane choice sign. Drivers need to decide which lane to use before approaching a roundabout. Yield to Both Lanes of Traffic Unlike single lane roundabouts, drivers need to yield to two lanes of traffic in a multi-lane roundabout. If you plan to turn right, stay in the farthest right lane and wait for approaching cars to pass before entering the roundabout. Photo by Sam Doejaaren

SINGLE LANE ROUNDABOUTS You’ll know a single lane roundabout is coming up when you see a yellow sign with circular arrows and a speed limit. Most roundabouts have a speed limit of 15 to 20 mph. Slow Down and Look Reduce your speed and look to your left before entering the roundabout. Remember that traffic already traveling in the roundabout has the right of way. Although you should slow down, you shouldn’t come to a complete stop. If there isn’t any traffic in the roundabout, you can even enter without fully yielding. But be on the lookout for pedestrians who may be in or approaching the crosswalk, because pedestrian always have the right of way. Maintain a Low, Steady Speed Keep a low, steady speed as you continue to drive through the roundabout. As you approach your desired exit, flip on your turn signal to let other drivers know your intention. You don’t need to slow down further or come to a stop to exit the roundabout. The only exceptions are when pedestrians are in the crosswalk or if an emergency vehicle is approaching. If an emergency vehicle is getting ready to enter the roundabout, exit at your destination and pull over immediately. Never stop or pull over in the roundabout!

Choose Your Lane Multi-lane roundabouts often have at least three possible exits. If you are going to want to turn left or make a U-turn, stay in the left lane. If you’re planning to make a right turn, stay in the right lane. You can continue to go straight from either lane. Stay in Your Lane Even though these types of roundabouts have multiple lanes, you are still not allowed to pass other drivers who may be moving slower or are unfamiliar with roundabout rules. Additionally, use extreme caution when driving next to semi-trucks and other oversized vehicles as they have a large turning radius. Stay a bit behind large vehicles traveling in the lane next to you to avoid getting ROUNDABOUT TIPS & REMINDERS ________________________________________________________________________________________ Remember to give larger trucks and buses extra room, as they might need to straddle the lane. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Big trucks should use the concrete island to help drivers maneuver around the roundabout. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Never enter a roundabout while an emergency vehicle using flashing lights and sirens is passing through. If you are already in the roundabout, exit first, then pull over to let the emergency vehicle pass. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Bicyclists should pick the appropriate lane before entering a multi-lane roundabout and stay in the middle of their chosen lane. Do not ride along the shoulder of the roundabout. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Drivers should not pass a bicyclist while inside the roundabout. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Pedestrians should use marked crosswalks along the outside of the roundabout.

All dogs, cats and ferrets four months and older residing in Mint Hill must be licensed annually. Proof of a current rabies vaccination from a veterinarian is required to purchase a license. License fees will vary depending on whether the pet is spayed or neutered. Fees for fertile animals are $30.00 and those for sterile animals are $10.00 for a 1-year license

and $25.00 for a 3-year license. License fee exemptions may apply in certain situations: • Senior citizens 62 years of age and older may receive a free license for their pets, provided the animals have been sterilized. • If the animal has medical problems that make it unable to withstand the sterilization procedure, a license may be purchased for $10.00 with a statement from a veterinarian. • Any disabled owner of a dog which is used for seeing, hearing or assistance purposes may receive a free license if the animal has been spayed or neutered. • Owners of show animals may receive licenses for $10.00 provided they show proof of participation in at least three nationally recognized shows within the past twelve months. Animal licenses may be purchased by mail or online from PetData. Customer service representatives may be contacted by phone for questions and concerns. For general information and to register your pet online go to www.petdata.com or call 1-877-835-8523 North Carolina State Law requires every dog and cat four months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. This law also applies to ferrets within the city limits of Charlotte. This vaccine must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. In North Carolina, the animal's first rabies shot is good for one year and subsequent vaccinations are valid for three years. If you have recently moved to North Carolina and the rabies vaccination was given at a vet outside of NC then it is still a valid shot (regardless of it being a 1 year or 3 year shot). The fine for failing to display a rabies tag is $50.00 and a $50.00 fine may be levied if your animal does not have a valid rabies vaccination. Mecklenburg County has strict leash laws that apply to all animals except cats. Animals must be on a leash, contained within a fence or an operable and marked invisible fence. To report an animal at large, call 311.
