Held last October, school teachers, students and artists participated in the parade coordinated by local artist and Awaken Gallery owner, Emily Andress. This year’s parade promises to be bigger and better with the theme being Myths, Fables, and Fairy Tales! For more information turn to page 23. elcome to Gaston County. Whether you’ve chosen to make this your permanent home or you’re visiting, we’re glad you are here and reading a copy of our welcome guide in print or online. The Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce publishes this magazine to inform visitors and newcomers, and even long-time residents, about the many attractions, new businesses and exciting developments taking place in our communities. The cities and towns of the Montcross area along Gaston County’s eastern border offer residents the best of small town living, with easy access to all of the attractions of the big city next door. Our public schools are outstanding, and we also have several excellent private school options. We have Gaston College, a two-year community college, and the four-year Belmont Abbey

MONTCROSS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

College. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is less than a 10-minute drive from Belmont and Mount Holly. In just 20 minutes, eastern Gaston residents can be in uptown Charlotte to see an NFL or NBA game, a play at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center or just to have dinner. When the big city isn’t calling, visitors and residents of the Montcross area communities have lots to enjoy in their own backyard. Unique independently owned restaurants and specialty shops line Main Street in every town, and parks, greenways and other outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant as well. If you’re drawn to water, few communities offer more water access than those of the Montcross area. The

Catawba River marks the eastern border of Gaston County flowing through Mount Holly and Belmont, allowing for beautiful riverfront parks, marinas and waterfront communities. On any given day, you can see kayaks and canoes on the water along with ski boats and fishing boats and often the sleek 65-foot-long shells of the Belmont

Rowing Club, each with eight scullers and a coxswain calling out the cadence. West of Belmont and Mount Holly, flowing through Lowell, McAdenville and Cramerton is the South Fork River, smaller than the Catawba, but ideal for canoes and kayaks and fishing. The two rivers combine in southern Belmont to form Lake Wylie, which totals 13,400 acres and 325 miles of shore line. The spectacular 380-acre Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is located along the South Fork River in Belmont, featuring a five-story orchid conservatory, a children’s garden and much more.

If you’re considering our area as your next home, we hope this publication will be a valuable tool in helping you become better acquainted with Gaston County and its communities. When you arrive, please let us know you’re here. We invite you to attend our events and let the Montcross Area Chamber help you connect quickly to sources for services and to new friends. Our website at www.MontcrossAreaChamber.com has lots of valuable information. You can sign up on the site to receive our emails, which will keep you updated on what’s happening in the business community. You’ll find our Chamber staff eager to welcome you, answer questions and provide information.

A Chamber Membership is a great way to meet people and learn about your community. Chamber Business Memberships start at only $250 per year, $185 for Non-Profit Organizations, and $130 for Individuals and Couples. (See page 50 for more information)

The two peaks, Crowder’s Mountain and The Pinnacle are remnants of an ancient mountain range which formed some 400500 million years ago and was gradually worn down by the elements. This is a popular destination for many outdoor enthusiasts such as hiking, rock climbing, backcountry camping, fishing, canoeing, picnicking, and bird watching.

Belmont Rowing Center Rowing, or crew, is the oldest intercollegiate sport in the U.S., and Belmont Rowing Center intends to establish the sport in our region. hether you’re a day-tripper, wedding weekend guest or lifetime resident, this local-business-centered bustling Gaston County city offers something for everyone. “These are our neighbors and friends that own these businesses. It’s just a great sense of community, having these locally-owned businesses downtown,” City Manager Adrian Miller said. “That’s one of the things that I’ve really enjoyed about this city, that it really supports itself. Even if they just moved here yesterday, they’re proud to be here and they want it to be successful.” Over the past several years, an exciting revitalization energy surging through downtown Belmont has brought many vacant buildings back to life. From coffee shops to clothing boutiques, craft beer breweries to special event venues, the city

is seeing much of its downtown real estate fill with local owners and frequent patrons. “We’re delighted to be in Belmont,” said Gigi Hohman, owner of Gigi’s Boutique for nine years. “I am thankful to be a part of the community of merchants here.” The store offers fine consignment for women, including new items from merchants and gently worn clothing and accessories from consignors, creating a “fashion forward” experience for shoppers. “The one thing that we feel really passionate about is that women feel welcome,” she said. Teaming with several other merchants and using one of several downtown event venues, Hohman raised $3,250 during a benefit fashion show to support a local charity.

“All the way around, I hope to be a blessing to Belmont,” she said. From short-term projects to long-term goals, Belmont leaders and business owners are working to promote the city as a welcoming destination for both visitors and residents. Several large-scale capital improvement projects, such as a new middle school and a new amphitheater in downtown’s Stowe Park, help upgrade public facilities and make the city more attractive to business owners. This includes helping potential property owners navigate local zoning ordinances and regulations. “It’s a growing community with a very supportive, probusiness leadership team in city hall,” said Steve Pepitone, Groundbreaking for new Belmont Middle School owner of South Main Cycle and STATION. The city’s frequent attention to downtown planning and design, such as holiday lights and public festivals, help draw customers. "They put a lot of effort into exactly that, into getting people to come downtown,” Pepitone said. “Clearly the people are coming. They are wandering up and down Main Street, and if you’ve got something interesting to offer, they’ll walk through your door.” These efforts as well as an increase in venues, restaurants, hotel rooms and retail shops, have helped promote Belmont as a wedding destination. “We’re getting more and more people who want to get married in Belmont, whether you’re from here or not,” Miller said. "Having your wedding weekend in Belmont is just a lot of fun, both the ceremony and reception. It’s a great Cherub’s Café Cherub’s Café place. It brings in people from all over.” www.belmontbrides.com A new Hilton Home2 Suites hotel will bring an additional 100 rooms to the area, and several upcoming transportation projects will help increase access around Belmont. The city is working with the N.C. Department of Transportation to create a greenway along an inactive railway corridor that runs from downtown to Belmont Abbey College. A dynamic entrepreneur community is developing The Wilkinson Boulevard Bridge around TechWorks of Gaston County, a non-profit tech hub spanning the Catawba River and linkcommitted to job creation and economic growth for the ing Mecklenburg and Gaston counties county and the region. will be replaced in 2021, Miller said, TechWorks is housed in a 14,000-square-foot former Kevin Loftin Park and plans include adding 10-foot-wide textile mill building that also is home to a brewery and pub in downtown Belmont. bike and pedestrian paths on either Offering office and co-working space along with side. Belmont was chosen as one of Apartment Therapy’s Coolest Suburbs in America 2019. Apartment Therapy’s 2019 list showcases a total of 24 suburban communities scattered across the country that offer the most when it comes to cultural activities, a sense of community, and simply a good quality of life. "Belmont boasts an enticing mix of culture, outdoor recreation, and friendly neighbors," the site says of this city in Gaston County. It notes the 'burb's proximity to the Catawba River, Lake Wylie and Crowders Mountain State Park as well as its charming downtown and eclectic mix of dining and shopping options. new topiary garden in this Gaston County city will not only provide beauty to its downtown streets, but also showcase Mount Holly’s strong sense of civic pride and participation. Local insurance agent Adam Lee recently helped enter the city as one of 2,000 non-profit applicants to receive a $25,000 State Farm grant for a community project. A farmer’s market official suggested an ornamental garden that would give local veterans a chance to learn a new skill with therapeutic benefits. Several months later, when a successful social media campaign garnered national support, Mount Holly became one of 40 nationwide grant recipients.

“When you consider how many submissions there were, how many we were up against, we were always in the top 10 of those contestants,” Lee said. “For the little town of Mount Holly to come out ahead like that, it’s a really good reflection of the unity and how this town can come together and get things done.” The funds will help design the garden, which is based on nationally-renown idea from Bishopville, S.C. resident Pearl Fryar. The grant will also support programming as well as provide signage explaining the feature to visitors. “Our hope is that it will be a model for other communities, too,” Lee said. “A lot of times there will be a monument or a memorial of some kind, and that’s one way of honoring veterans, but we wanted to pull in the idea that there are a lot of veterans that are still living that still need our help. We wanted to connect our living veterans with those who have served in the past.” Mount Holly’s close access to big-city attractions while maintaining these types of small-town attributes helps attract new residents and visitors. “Mount Holly is really prime for growth right now being that we’re so

The Veterans Healing Garden will provide a dedicated gathering place for veterans in a highly-visible location in the heart of Mount Holly and will become the origin to connect the Veterans Park and Farmers Market. The State Farm Neighborhood Assist® Grant of $25,000 is a crowd-sourced philanthropic program. It empowers communities to identify causes that will have positive impact if funded. At least one submission was received from each of the 50 states. The funds will provide the construction materials including a water source, soil preparation, and plants for a topiary garden that will be maintained by veterans of the community.

close to Charlotte,” said Assistant City Manager Miles Braswell. “We’ve been doing a lot of planning to get ready for it.” These plans include a new public works headquarters. The campus combines three facilities at one location,

including an 8,000-square-foot administration building and a 10,000-square-foot garage for light and heavy-duty equipment. These buildings bring public works, utilities, parks and recreation and storm water management together in one location.

“It makes for more efficient use, of course,” Braswell said. Relocating these offices to the new complex also freed space in the Massey building, which sits near the river along the city’s greenway. The Gaston County Art Guild chose the facility as its new home with space to support local artists, Braswell said. “They call it ‘Art on the Greenway’ now,” he said. On Mount Holly’s northern boundaries, a new fire station at Mountain Island upgrades and expands emergency services for residents. The $2.4 million, 6,000-square-foot facility includes three bays for emergency vehicles, with one bay and a room leased to Gaston Emergency Medical Services for ambulance service. Mount Holly also continues to capitalize on the city’s natural assets along the Catawba River, with ongoing plans to expand greenway paths. “We are in the planning stages now for our Dutchman's’ Creek Greenway. That will give us another connected point to complete our greenway system,” Braswell said. “That’s just one way residents can get around in the city and get to go out and enjoy the city and nature.”

A new four-story, 90-room Fairfield Inn and Suites being constructed near Exit 27 on Interstate 85 has the potential to bring additional commercial business to that area, Braswell said. Several residential projects on the city’s northern limits are also bringing exciting growth opportunities to Mount Holly. A recent wastewater treatment agreement with the city of Charlotte ensures public works support for existing and new developments in the area. “That’s just another example of how we’re ready for growth in this area,” Braswell said. a 22

Lantern Parade Illuminates The Arts Written by Penelope McClenny | Photographs by Bob Leverone

s a 13-foot snake, a 7-foot phoenix and hundreds of other bright lanterns flowed through downtown Mount Holly, one local business owner witnessed her goal of connecting the community to the arts become a reality. “That’s the thing that I think is the most exciting is how beautiful it is,” said Emily Andress, owner of Awaken Gallery and organizer of the first lantern parade in Mount Holly. “The streets were packed. It’s shining a light on how small towns can create pretty impactful events and how they can come together as a community.” Inspired by a festival in France in 2017, Andress reached out to community leaders to plan a similar event for this growing art destination in Gaston County. The Mount Holly Community Development

Foundation funded supplies and travel expenses for Olive Stack, an Irish artist, to host lantern building workshops. Local teachers from elementary, middle and high schools then took supplies and what they had learned to assist any students who wanted to participate. Many local business owners also created lanterns. “We were so shocked last year how many people came out for this,” Andress said. “Last year, we had approximately 200 lanterns. If I get my wish, that will be quadrupled for this years parade. The whole purpose of this for me to start this here was to shine a light on how the arts can change a community and what better way to do it than this, having community members make lanterns and be a part of it, alongside artists and alongside students.”

several years, the park has served as the hub for a National Trails Day celebration sponsored by the Carolina Thread Trail. This event and many others are drawing an increasing number of visitors and new residents, and city planners have added several features to expand services. Newly installed bike repair stations provide tools to help visiting cyclists enjoy their rides, and water fountains make sure those on the walking trails, playgrounds and other public facilities stay hydrated. “We have a lot of cyclists come through, so we’re making the downtown area more bike friendly,” Pugh said. Although Goat Island and its numerous amenities are the most popular attractions, art installations growing throughout town are adding even more visual interest. A new mural celebrates the town’s

unique history as the producer of “Cramerton khaki,” a durable and comfortable military cloth used by U.S. armed forces during World War II.

such a difference.” In other exciting developments, a new CaroMont Health primary care facility will bring medical treatment closer to home for Cramerton residents. “We have not had anything like that in the town of Cramerton recently. We’re very excited for that opportunity,” Pugh said. City leaders are also proud that Cramerton offers a wide variety of housing to fit different budget levels and styles, from starter homes to million-dollar estates, mill houses to apartments. “For a smaller community, the housing stock is always diverse,” Pugh said. In the same way, Cramerton’s population also includes a wide variety, from “couples that are brand new to town, to people who are deep in their careers and close to retirement age.” At the same time, volunteers of all ages continue to work hard to keep the town clean and lively, another feature that makes Cramerton a great Gaston County destination. Cauthen and several others, for instance, worked this year to organize a kickball game pitting local firefighters against police officers. “It’s a way to get people out and meet our first responders in a way that is not intimidating,” she said. “We thought kickball would be fun to watch.” This event and other projects, such as the annual river clean-up day and the installation of “small libraries” through-

massive Easter egg hunt and a bustling recycling center are two of the many strong examples that the City of Lowell is on a successful path to becoming a great place to live. “If you want your departments to be good, and you want good things, you have to invest in people,” City Manager Kevin Krouse said, “and that’s what we’ve done here.” Those people include Parks and Recreation Director Cristy Cummings, whose successful media promotion and organization helped stage an egg hunt for more than 600 children. “She’s really good at making it appealing and getting

the word out there,” Krouse said. Cummings uses social media as well as a community calendar on the city’s website to help spread the word on an extensive list of activities the recreation department has planned for residents of all ages. These include youth sports programs as well as classes on wellness, nutrition, cooking, and fall prevention. Events such as a coat drive and a free library give residents a chance to give back to their community. The city’s annual Freedom Festival on Memorial Day weekend as well as a fall festival help round out a robust social calendar. “I love festivals,” Cummings said, listing a few of the

activities at the Freedom Festival. “We have everything from rides to food truck and local crafts brews, just something for everybody.” Throughout Lowell, clean streets and well-maintained landscaping highlight another result of an investment in city staff. “Our public works is phenomenal,” Krouse said. “They keep it so nice and clean.” This includes improvements to the recycling center which helps provide a much-needed service to residents. “So far, it’s been a fantastic program, and we’re glad that we did it,” Krouse said of the center, which is open three days each week. “It does cost us some money, but it provides a service and it’s actually recyclables going in there. People can know if they put it in there, that whole bin is going to recycling.” These types of programs will help a city that is poised for growth, with several new businesses and housing developments in the works. the potential of 500 jobs over the next 12 years and an average annual salary of $54,000, Krouse said. “It was the largest white-collar job announcement in the history of Gaston County,” the city manager said of the complex, which will be built near Exit 22 and offer such amenities as an employee fitness center.

Several planned subdivisions will provide more than 100 single family homes, and plans for 50 townhomes will give

new residents a variety of real estate options. Several of these plans also include easements for greenway borders and accents, linking residents to Lowell’s growing public areas. New Construction As the city continues to grow, local leaders want to be sure they get plenty of input from residents. To gather input for Lowell’s bicycle and pedestrian plan, residents had access to a survey and a public workshop, Cummings said. “A lot of kids already walk to school. We would love to do some road races,” she said. “I think a lot of people are seeing the need for being active and being outside, so that’s getting a lot of people outside to visit downtown shops and parks. It’s definitely a good trend, and I think that trend is here to stay.” The potential for growth with the support of energetic and engaged employees has set the stage for an exciting future in Lowell, Krouse said. “I’m excited about what we have in store,” he said. “We have a good group of people.” a

A shopping paradise at Mona’s Boutique & Gifts

McAdenville BY PENELOPE McCLENNY

E

ach day Mona Fore opens the doors of her downtown McAdenville gift shop, the growing energy of the town brings a smile to her face. “My mother-in-law passed away three years ago, and she always wanted a shop like the one I have,” said Fore, owner of Mona’s Boutique & Gifts. “This would be exactly what she wanted McAdenville to be.” That vision included a more active downtown area that would offer restaurants, shops, parks and more opportunities to enjoy the village’s picturesque

setting well beyond the nationally-known Christmas light celebration. In recent years, the work of local leaders, residents and business owners have helped bring that vision to fruition. “That’s kind of the trajectory that we see, every project that we do is opening doors for more people to come to McAdenville and see what we have to offer,” said Carrie Bailey, who is serving her seventh year as a town councilwoman. Several years ago, the council began working with local property owners to

develop more public use areas throughout McAdenville. One of the most ambitious parts of that plan included moving two water treatment facilities to open more space for parks and a greenway along the town’s riverfront. “It’s probably one of the biggest projects that McAdenville has undertaken,” Bailey said of the greenway, which is set to be completed in mid-2019. The project along the South Fork River includes a 10-foot-wide concrete trail, which can easily accommodate pedestrians, bikes, strollers, rollerblades, and www.montcrossareachamber.com

other types of recreational traffic. A canoe launch will also be included along the trail. While these projects help move McAdenville toward future plans, business owners and local leaders also use every opportunity to create links to the town’s past. The renovation of the former Methodist church created a new, expanded town hall, and the McAdenville Table and Market restaurant preserved numerous pieces of the

town’s architectural history to showcase throughout the restaurant. "We’re very deliberate whenever plans for growth come along that we maintain the history of the town,” Bailey said. “A lot of towns, I think they forgo one or the other, but we know what we have here is very special.” The town’s population also offers a unique mix of established residents and new arrivals, retirees and young families. “There’s a such diverse age group,” Bailey said. “My husband and I are in our 50’s but we have 20-somethings that live next door and retirees across the street.” For Fore, linking the past to the future strikes a personal chord within her shop. In 1994, a realtor’s office occupied the space. “My husband and I signed the paperwork for our very first house in what’s now my store,” she said. “We’ve kinda

come full circle.” Like many of the local residents and leaders, linking McAdenville’s past to an exciting future and preserving the smalltown atmosphere while offering modern provisions and services are all central to Fore’s vision for the town. Each month,

she hosts a give-back shopping day, donating 10 percent of sales to a variety of charitable causes and organizations. “I try to keep it small town, and I love that McAdenville is expanding,” she said. “I think my mother-in-law would be super proud of what the town is.” a

With a tradition that began in 1956 when the local Men’s Club decided to decorate a number of trees with Christmas lights, McAdenville is now known as “Christmas Town USA”. The glow of all the lights makes McAdenville an annual destination and it has grown to a month-long celebration with light displays involving residents, businesses, and churches. It has grown to be one of the nation's largest, attracting a halfmillion visitors who stroll or slowly drive the 1.3 mile loop through town. Each year, thousands of red, white and green lights decorate nearly 400 trees throughout town with special displays that surround the lake at the town’s center. tanley resident and local pastor, Randy Starkey, thought he could brew a great cup of coffee, and he thought he knew most of the residents in this Gaston County town of almost 4,000 residents. He was right about the coffee. “The biggest surprise for me was how many people I didn’t know,” said Starkey, who opened 1Mission Coffee Company in early 2019 with another local pastor and friend, Matt Munday. “I always ask people when they come in if they’re from Stanley. For such a small town, I’ve been shocked at the number of people I’ve gotten to meet.” Starkey’s shop guarantees good coffee, with a portion of the proceeds going to support missions in Haiti and downtown

Stanley beautification projects. Steven Denton, now entering his second year as Stanley’s mayor, lists improving the appearance of downtown as one of his top priorities. Upcoming projects include coordinating with business owners to develop a cohesive exterior paint scheme, installing decorative street lamps, enhancing welcome signs and improving landscaping. “I’m hoping to do that to entice more businesses to look at Stanley and come into our downtown area,” he said. “That’s one thing when I was campaigning that I heard from our citizens, that they wanted downtown to be revitalized.” With a new business park resident,

ERA Polymers, and several housing developments in the works, Stanley continues to experience the wave of growth fueled by many in search of a rural setting with quick access to an urban area. A three-phase, 230-home development is planned just off Highway 27, Denton said, with 50 new homes also planned within the existing Bennington Woods. Another top priority for Denton is helping to reduce residents’ monthly water costs. He and council members are working to renegotiate a current contract with a nearby municipality. “If you took a poll in Stanley, reducing water rates would be near the top every single time,” Denton said.

1Mission Coffee Company is located in the heart of downtown

Stanley Town Hall

“I think it’s in both parties’ best interests if we can renegotiate the rate.” To help facilitate the meetings that are the catalyst behind many of these changes, Stanley is beginning construction on a new council chamber adjacent to town hall. “I know myself and the council and the town hall staff are looking forward to having it right beside town hall,” he said. “That new building will double the existing square footage.” Denton hopes to spend several more years in the that building. A recent unanimous vote by the town council extended mayoral terms from two to four years, and Denton plans to seek reelection in the fall.

Stanley residents and government leaders foster a strong sense of community, creating a welcoming environment for residents such as Starkey. “This town is very blessed and very gracious in the fact that there are number of pastors who work together to do a lot of things for the town,” Starkey said. “Stanley has been very gracious to allow the churches to come together and do a lot of things.” For Denton, that’s a major selling point in working to keep a position that’s grown on him even more than he expected. “It's an exciting and great time to be involved with the town,” he said. “I’m loving every minute of it.” a
