Invertebrates

The invertebrates are more complicated because they account for most of the animals that exist. For this reason they may be split into sub categories, such as subphylum which consists of many classes.

To help you, I will stay in order of those examples listed in the textbook

How to write the scientific name

What should you do if you want to write about the fruit fly using the proper scientific name? How much of the following would we need to use? Fruit Fly

Kingdom Phlyum Class Order Family Genus Species

Bionomial name

Animal Arthropod Insect Diptera Drosophilidae Drosophila melanogaster

Uses 2 names: Genus and species

So fruit fly becomes;

Drosophila melanogaster

or

D. melanogaster

Using keys

If you want to find out the name of a living organism you have found, you may be able to look it up in a book. Sometimes this doesn't work and you have to decide. You need a key. Usually, the key used is a dichotomous key. In this, you have 2 choices. You have a pair of descriptions and you have to choose the best one that describes the organism.

Here is an example:

1

wings present wings absent

go to 2 ant

2 has one pair of wings has two pairs of wings

go to 3 go to 4

3 legs not as long as body legs longer than body

house fly mosquito

4 wings covered with brightly coloured scales wings transparent

butterfly dragonfly
