For the simple fact that inSide Ride is a summer feature, we don’t get too many winter vehicles, that is until now. Starland County owns a very unique winter transporter and they had it out on display at the Canada Day Parade. The 1951 Bombardier C-18s has the capacity to carry 11 passengers, is powered by a six cylinder Chrysler engine, and two tracks ready to take on the deepest of snow. Starland CAO Ross Rawlusyk says the county bought the machine in December of 1951 and it appears it was a heavy snow year because in reviewing council minutes during the same period, he notes a special 1 per cent mill tax

levy for snow clearing was passed unanimously. Another interesting note is there was a motion in January that stipulated the unit was exclusively for emergencies and rescues, and use had to be approved by the CAO, making one speculate there may have been some joy rides. The unit is almost in mint condition and the wood may have been revarnished at one point. They make a point of running the machine at least once a year. The original purchase price was $3,540.05, but every time they take it out for events like parades, they get offers for ten times as much.
