Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll write about my training and what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned. Only two months to go until the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a hard couple weeks for me. Right after the DinoFest Triathlon I was feeling great and starting to rev up my training. Then, during a run, pain shot through my left quadricep. I stopped, walked for a bit until the pain went away,

and then started running again. After a minute, the pain returned and I was forced to head home. I took a break for several days, which seemed to help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing your motion of running, you might be overstretching that muscles. Over a long period, it might strain, or you could pull it,â&#x20AC;? said Gavin Makse, athletic director at St. Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The usual treatment is RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. But, on hamstrings you want to use heat.â&#x20AC;? There is a laundry list of

common running injuries, many of which Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had. Early on in my training, shin splints plagued me a little. Shin splints occur when the muscles covering the shin become inďŹ&#x201A;amed. Generally, icing the shins for 15-20 minutes and elevated helps. The other persistent injury Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dealing with is a side stitch, which generally comes if I push myself too hard. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve run into some trouble with the heat. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to come down with heat exhaustion, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to stay hydrated. On days when running, try to drink one to two cups more water than usual. The best treatment for most injuries is prevention. Stretching and warming up before running helps.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the things a lot of people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do and the reason they get injuries is inadequate stretching, not just before, but after running too,â&#x20AC;? said Makse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually for about ďŹ ve minutes with some light stretching, you should be good to go. If you try running on cold muscles, that could lead to injuries.â&#x20AC;? What you do after running can be just as important. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then, you want to do a cool-down after you ďŹ nish your run. Do some light jogging or walking and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to do stretching for longer,â&#x20AC;? said Makse. Other ways to help prevent injuries are running on even ground, making sure you have adequate footwear, and cross-training.

Softball sisters head to provincials Two sisters from Drumheller will be heading to provincials later this month. Certsen Peters (pitching above), who plays for the Calgary Xtreme U18 team, and Brayden, who plays witht he Calgary Adrenaline U14 team, will be heading to Stony Plain on July 12 to vie for their respective provincial championships. The sisters have had great seasons, including a number of strong tournament finishes throughout. The two are also in Montana this weekend to play in the Glacier Emeralds Tournament.
