Fiber Expansion to Casselton, ND

EXPANDING OUR FOOTPRINT By Kent Schimke

DRN ReadiTech General Manager/CEO

It is officially summer! Over the past three months, our world has changed. To some it may have stopped or at least slowed down due to COVID-19. However, that is not the case here at DRN ReadiTech. As we continue to move forward during the COVID-19 pandemic, DRN and ReadiTech remain deeply committed to serving you, our valued members and clients. In the past three months, DRN and ReadiTech employees have been working hard from home to make sure your telecommunications needs were being met. Our technicians installed over 90 Internet connections within 10 days so many students could continue their educational experience online. In addition, our staff increased Internet speeds for members due to telework. We are monitoring our network daily to make sure we are doing our part to keep you connected. I am proud of our staff. They have met the challenge, answered thousands of phone calls and e-mails to support your technical questions, repair and install service and answer questions about bills and services offered. The plan is to have our employees reporting to their designated locations by July 6. Because we have proven to you that we can continue to provide you with excellent customer service while working from home and to do our part in slowing the spread, we have decided to keep our offices closed indefinitely. This is to protect you as well as our employees. We ask you, our valued members and clients, to continue to contact us through phone calls or email. If customers need to come into the office an appointment will need to be made.

2

Your Board of Directors and management team are continually monitoring the situation. When data shows it is warranted, we will open our office doors to the public. On to more exciting news! DRN ReadiTech is on the move. We are expanding our footprint into Casselton, North Dakota! We plan to start construction of this $6 million project in July. Casselton is currently being served by Midco and Century Link using an infrastructure that is not capable of offering Internet speeds that fiber optics can. I am very excited for the opportunity to provide the most reliable, fast and state-of-the-art fiber optic broadband services to these communities. Fiber will enable customers, both residential and business, the opportunity for growth in terms of Internet speeds and number of devices capable of running on one connection. The past few months have shown the world how important it is to have a reliable and fast Internet connection. DRN’s Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22. We will be celebrating our 70th Year of Success. Please watch your mail for more details as the day approaches. I hope to see many of our members attend this special celebration. As you look through this publication, you will see that while the world slowed down in reaction to COVID-19, DRN ReadiTech was still on the move, planning for the Cooperative’s future. Sincerely,

Kent Schimke

HOW FAST IS A GIGABIT INTERNET CONNECTION? You’ve probably heard people talk about Gigabit Internet speeds, but like many, you may be unclear on exactly what the term means. Just how fast is 1 Gbps (Gigabit per second)? It’s the equivalent of 1,000 Mbps (Megabits per second), which is over 100 times faster than the U.S. high-speed Internet average of 10 Mbps. Take a look at this comparison of how much faster you can complete online activities with a 1 Gbps connection versus a 10 Mbps connection: APPLICATION

10 MBPS CONNECTION

1 GBPS CONNECTION

Download HD movie

Over an hour and a half

Less than one minute

Download 100 digital pictures

Five minutes

Three seconds

Stream multiple movies and/or TV shows

Maxes out at only two HD shows

Capable of streaming 200 HD shows at one time

Download 20GB video game

Almost five hours

Less than three minutes

Download 100 digital music files

Five minutes and 20 seconds

Less than four seconds

In addition to these incredibly fast download times, a 1 Gbps connection also provides enhanced Internet performance and enjoyment. For example, gamers are able to seamlessly play online games with real-time video content and 3D responsiveness. Video quality is greatly improved during video conferencing with Zoom or other services. And multiple users connected to a home’s network will not experience the slowdowns associated with average Internet speeds; instead, they can simultaneously use smartphones, TVs, computers, tablets, and gaming systems to their fullest potential.

We look forward to bringing the community of Casselton our service that is prepared to handle multiple online devices within a home or office and offers potential for growth as Internet speeds increase into the future.

Kadey Holm

“The benefits of the internship to the interns and DRN are many. The interns gain valuable experience and exposure to a professional working environment with the opportunity to apply what they are learning in real time, work scenarios,” said Sonja Bommersbach, DRN ReadiTech human resource manager. “Plus, the interns bring new energy and ideas to the cooperative, which is exciting.” Kadey Holm is one of our marketing interns this summer. Kadey grew up on a farm west of Forbes and graduated from Ellendale High in 2017. Kadey enjoys being around animals as she grew up showing livestock. She currently attends North Dakota State University and will be a senior this fall studying animal science and agricultural communication.

Kelsey Peterson

Another marketing intern that has also joined our staff is Kelsey Peterson. Originally from Ellendale, Kelsey graduated from Ellendale High School in 2016. She currently attends Grand Canyon University in Arizona and is a senior studying marketing. In her spare time, Kelsey enjoys going for walks, baking, doing crosswords puzzles, and staying active in the community. Katelyn Dathe is this summer’s IT Development intern. She is from Ellendale and graduated from Ellendale High in 2019. Katelyn enjoys participating in and coaching sports, tutoring, and doing puzzles in her spare time. She will be going into her sophomore year of University of Jamestown studying mathematics and computer science.

Katelyn Dathe

The accounting intern this summer is Kaitlyn Schiele. She grew up in Edgeley and graduated from Edgeley High School in 2018. She is currently a junior at NDSU studying accounting. Kaitlyn enjoys sports, reading books, and going to the lake in her spare time. DRN is excited to welcome these interns who have joined our staff and eager to share wisdom and to help guide each of these young adults as they develop their skills for their career paths. 2020 TECH CAMP FOR STUDENTS This summer, on July 28, students will have the opportunity to attend our ReadiTech camp at the ReadiTech Innovation Center, Southeast Region Career & Technology Center in Oakes. The camp will provide many hands-on activities for kids, ages 1217 and focus on understanding the diversity and future of technology. In order to follow CDC guidelines, we will have two sessions this year. A morning session will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and an afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m. Each session will be limited to 10 students. DRN ReadiTech began hosting the annual tech camp at its Ellendale headquarters in 2016. Previous years, students worked on creating Lego robotics and wearable technology. They also played technology-related games and created learning-based projects. Students left the camp with a greater knowledge of technology, its capabilities and how it enhances life in rural North Dakota.
