Todos los años en calidad de presidente de Fedujazz debo escribir unas palabras para introducirlos en esta publicación y en un nuevo año de conciertos. Este festival significa mucho para mí y estoy orgullosa de ser parte del equipo de trabajo que lo hace posible. Feliz de ver cada año la gran cantidad de artistas, gente querida, patrocinadores, voluntarios, músicos, fanáticos del jazz y a nuestros estudiantes que crecen y pasan a convertirse de estudiantes a voluntarios.

Si escribiéramos un relato con todo el proceso vivido hasta el momento de llegar a cada escenario, la novela “En busca del tiempo perdido” de Marcel Proust, quedaría corta.

Finalmente, siempre el resultado es un hermoso festival, una descarga de buena música, de maravillosos escenarios, de una escenografía mágica, de niños y niñas felices recibiendo extraordinarios talleres, de una tocada improvisada que termina cuando se deben desconectar los equipos y el sol anuncia el próximo día de conciertos.

As president of Fedujazz, it is my pleasure to introduce you to this publication and a new year of concerts. This festival is so dear to me, and I am proud to be part of the team that makes it possible. I am happy to see the great number of artists, sponsors, volunteers, musicians, and jazz fans that participate every year, along with our students that grow-up and become more involved each year. If we wrote a story about the process lived during each stage of the festival’s production, the novel “In search of lost time” by Marcel Proust, would be short.

Finally, the result is always a beautiful festival, of incredible music, wonderful and magical scenery, happy children receiving extraordinary workshops, and an improvised play that ends when the equipment must be disconnected and the sun announces the next day of concerts.

THIS YEAR THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC JAZZ FESTIVAL IS DEDICATED TO A DIFFERENT COUNTRY EVERY NIGHT, PAYING HOMAGE TO THAT SPECIAL CONNECTION THAT UNITES MUSIC AND DIFFERENT CULTURES France, Argentina, Israel, Brazil, the United States, Italy, Puerto Rico and of course the Dominican Republic will be represented at each concert.

In the face of adversities that nature has presented us this year, especially to our fellow island people with a clash of powerful hurricanes, the feeling of help and solidarity that we have demonstrated gives us hope.

Along with hope, the magic of music and jazz brings us joy, encourages us to have greater awareness and to work together in the struggle against hardships that in the end wherever they happen, affect us all. In this new edition of the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, we present jazz that unites, that connects us, and sends a message of faith, joy, peace, and union among all people.

LA BIG BAND DEL CONSERVATORIO NACIONAL DE MÚSICA DE SANTO DOMINGO La Big Band del Conservatorio de Santo Domingo está bajo la dirección de Javier Vargas, músico, compositor, arreglista y profesor en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música en Santo Domingo, en la República Dominicana.

Formada hace 26 años por el gran músico dominicano Crispín Fernández, la Big Band sirve de plataforma para varias generaciones de músicos, que se presentan durante todo el año en los más importantes y diversos escenarios de Dominicana, lo que les permite a estudiantes y músicos desarrollar

THE BIG BAND CONSERVATORY OF SANTO DOMINGO The Santo Domingo National Music Conservatory’s Big Band is under the direction of F. Javier Vargas, a musician, composer, musical arranger, and Professor at the National Conservatory of Music, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Formed almost 26 years ago by the great Dominican musicians Crispin Fernández, the Big Band has served as a platform for various generations of musicians that present themselves on diverse stages throughout the Dominican Republic, granting these students

and musicians real world experience.

The Big Band is composed of a brass section of five saxophones, four trombones, and five trumpets, and complemented by a rhythm section that consists of drums, percussion, piano, bass and guitar.

Alain Mallet es un productor aclamado por la crítica, especialmente por su trabajo con Jonatha Brooke. Sus composiciones originales han sido grabadas por grandes del jazz tales como Gary Burton, Dave Samuels y Paquito D’Rivera para nombrar algunos.

ALAIN MALLET is a critically acclaimed producer, particularly for his work with Jonatha Brooke. His original compositions have been recorded by jazz greats such as Gary Burton, Dave Samuels and Paquito D’Rivera to name a few.

Born in France, Alain Mallet moved to the United States at the age of 21 to attend Berklee College of Music where he is now an associate professor in the ensemble and piano departments. He has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in Jazz and pop including Phil Woods, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Marc Johnson and Madeleine Peyroux.

Alain Mallet has worked as pianist and musical director for jazz star Robin McKelle, performing with the jam band sensation ClubD’Elf and has recorded with saxophonist Andy Snitzer, flamenco singer José Merce, and singer Janis Siegel from the Manhattan Transfer.

DEL FRA Riccardo Del Fra nació en Roma, Italia en 1956. Estudió contrabajo en el Conservatorio di Frosinone con Franco Petracchi y Franco Noto. Ha realizado colaboraciones con la RAI, con programas de televisión y en grabaciones de bandas sonoras de películas como “The City of Women” de Federico Fellini con música de Louis Bacalov, así como “The Skin” de Liana Cavani y música de Lalo Schifrin.

Del Fra tocó con varios grupos italianos, PianaValdambrini, Enrico Pieranunzi, así como con solistas estadounidenses que llegaban a Italia. En 1979 conoció a Chet Baker y en los años 80 se mudó a París, Francia. Su colaboración con Chet duró cerca de 9 años - 12 grabaciones. En 1989 graba “A sip of your touch” con Art Farmer, Dave Liebman, Rachel Gould, Enrico Pieranunzi y Michel Graillier. Esta grabación fue dedicada a Chet Baker y recibió muchos premios.

En la década de los 90 comienza un nuevo período dedicado al estudio y análisis de la orquestación y la composición con compositores clásicos contemporáneos franceses, así como con Bob Brookmeyer en Köln.

Ricardo Del Fra ha tocado con Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Sonny Stitt, Lee Konitz, James Moody, Tommy Flanagan, Horace Parlan, Clifford Jordán, Vernell Fournier, Al Levitt, Michel Legrand, Alain Jean-Marie, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, Dave Liebman, entre otros y ha sido el bajista habitual de varias bandas como Barney Wilen, Johnny Griffin, Bob Brookmeyer, etc.

Riccardo Del Fra was born in Rome, Italy in 1956. He studied double bass at the Conservatorio di Frosinone with Franco Petracchi and Franco Noto. Collaborations with the RAI, TV programs and recordings of movies soundtracks Federico Fellini’s “The City of Women” music by Louis Bacalov; Liliana Cavani’s “The Skin” music by Lalo Schifrin.

He played with several italian groups, Piana-Valdambrini, Enrico Pieranunzi, as well as with american soloists coming to Italy. He met Chet Baker in 1979. In the ‘80s he moved to Paris, France.

His collaboration with Chet lasted about 9 years - 12 recordings.

In 1989 he records “A sip of your touch” with Art Farmer, Dave Liebman, Rachel Gould, Enrico Pieranunzi and Michel Graillier. This recording was dedicated to Chet Baker and received many awards. In the 90’s, a new period starts for him, dedicated to the study of analysys, orchestration and composition with french contemporary classical composers as well as with Bob Brookmeyer in Köln.

Riccardo Del Fra composes music for the cinema, especially for the director and actor Lucas Belvaux. In 2004 RDF was named head of the Jazz and Improvised Music department at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris where he had been teaching since 1998.

In 2003, Del Fra was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture and Communication of France.

Riccardo Del Fra is touring throughout Europe with his quintet and performing in clubs and renowned festivals like Berlin Jazz Fest, Enjoy Jazz, Karlsruhe, Lausanne, Milano, Iseo, Jazz en Baie, Jazz à Porquerolles, La Londe among others.

GUILLERMO NOJECHOWICZ

EL ECO, es un ensemble de jazz brasilero y argentino basado en Boston, en Nueva York, y Oberlin, OH, que ofrece lo mejor de World Music. Su material es sorprendentemente original, presentado con vigor, impulsado por ritmos de percusión, y con un enfoque lírico. EL ECO combina la complejidad de los ritmos cubanos, afrocubanos, bossa nova y funk.

Líder de la escena del jazz latino en el noreste de los Estados Unidos, EL ECO recibió aclamación nacional en el programa de la National Public Radio’s ‘Jazz Set’ y entre sus actuaciones podemos incluir el Festival Internacional de Jazz de Curaçao en las Antillas Neerlandesas, en la Telluride Jazz Celebration en Colorado y en el Festival de Jazz de Buenos Aires.

EL ECO is a Brazilian Argentinean jazz ensemble based in Boston, New York City, and Oberlin, OH, and offers true world music at its best. Their material is strikingly original, delivered with strong vocals, percussive drive, and a lyrical focus. EL ECO delivers a complex mix of Cuban, Afro-Cuban, Bossa Nova, and Funk rhythms.

A leader of the Latin jazz scene in the Northeast (USA), El ECO received national acclaim on National Public Radio’s “Jazz Set”, and their performances have included the Curacao International Jazz Festival in the Netherland Antilles, Telluride Jazz Celebration in Colorado and the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival.

GUILLERMO NOJECHOWICZ from Argentina, EL ECO’S leader, is an international clinician and educator. He recently appeared at the Panama Jazz Festival with Artistic Director Danilo Perez, where he taught master classes in brazilian jazz, as well as performing with a student ensemble and special guest Wynton Marsalis at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in a collaborative program with Harvard University.

kim NAZARIAN Profesora, lírica y ganadora del Grammy en ensemble, Kim Nazarian ha estado durante los últimos 28 años armonizando con la New York Voices -NYV- por todo el mundo. Además de las muchas grabaciones que Kim ha hecho con NYV, ella está orgullosa de ser una de las voces más destacadas en el CD de Bobby McFerrin “VOCAbuLarie”’. Otra importante y reciente colaboración de Nazarian con la Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra y el Manchester Craftman’s Guild en una gira de conciertos dedicada a la ya fallecida, y grande entre los grandes, Ella Fitzgerald.

La lista de los lugares y paises a los que Kim ha viajado por el mundo haciendo giras por el último cuarto de siglo, es increíble e incluye: Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Cente, el Kennedy Center, el Jazz Cruise; Ouro Preto, Brasil; Leipzig, Alemania, Armenia, Colombia, Francia, Holanda, Indonesia, Japón, Noruega y Uruguay para nombrar solo algunos. Nazarian también se especializa en la enseñanza de técnica vocal y el arte de canto en grupo. Ella ha representado a los EEUU como juez para el concurso internacional ‘A Cappella’ en Graz, Austria. Nazarian ha hecho clínicas en Acappella en el Festival de Taiwan, Total Vocal en Graz, Austria, Vocal Summit en Alemania y Vocal Pop y Jazz Days en Holanda. Kim es también una graduada magna cum laude del Ithaca College.

For the past 28 years lyricist, teacher, and Grammy award winning ensemble singer Kim Nazarian has been harmonizing all over the world with New York Voices (NYV). Along with the many recordings Kim has made with NYV, she is proud to be one of the featured voices on Bobby McFerrin’s VOCAbuLarieS CD. Another recent professional highlight is Ms. Nazarian’s collaboration with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Manchester Craftman’s Guild on a concert tour dedicated to the late, great Ella Fitzgerald.

Este grupo de jazz dominicano ha mantenido su presencia en el ámbito internacional, presentándose en prestigiosos eventos culturales mundialmente, tales como; Montreal Jazz Festival y el South Florida Jazz Festival junto a las leyendas del jazz Néstor Torres y Arturo Sandoval.

Su original estilo de fusionar el folclore dominicano con el jazz y otros géneros, le ha brindado grandes éxitos. Muestra de ello es la composición “Periblues” (mezcla de blues con merengue típico), que ya es parte importante del acervo musical dominicano al ser grabada en el año 2000

por el Ministerio de Turismo como parte de los 100 Años de Música Dominicana.

Otra composición original “Gagayas” (fusión del ritmo ‘gaga’ con el jazz) obtuvo el premio Nacional de Música Fradique Lizardo en 2005.

JavierBY Vargas, a musician, composer, musical arranger, at the CELEBRATING National Conservatory of MIRABAL IN 1987, AND THE BANDandISProfessor CURRENTLY THEIR Music, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY. This Dominican Republic jazz group has maintained a presence on the international jazz scene, performing at prestigious cultural events worldwide, such as the Montreal Jazz Festival and the South Florida Jazz Festival, with legends including Nestor Torres and Arturo Sandoval.

Embodying an original style of jazz fusion, Sistema Temperado combines folkloric Dominican music with jazz and other genres, with great success. Acclaim includes recognition by the Ministry of Tourism with their inclusion of the composition “Periblues” as part of the “100 Years of Dominican Music”. Recorded

in the year 2000, “Periblues” is a song that combines blues with typical merengue, which is an important part of the Dominican musical heritage.

Another original composition “Gagayas” is a fusion of the rhythm ‘gaga’ with jazz, which won the National Music Award Fradique Lizardo, in 2005.

Actualmente, es el coordinador del programa del departamento de Música Folclórica y Popular del Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Director de la Big Bag de la misma institución, profesor de música en la Universidad de Santo Domingo y Director Académico del Instituto de Música de Santo Domingo.

Javier Vargas Heredia (Javielo) de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, es un guitarrista, compositor y profesor de música.

Estudió guitarra clásica y música popular en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música, posee una licenciatura en Educación Musical de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. Javier también ha estudiado Música Profesional con especialidad en Composición de Jazz y actuación en el Berklee College of Music en Boston.

Como educador, Javier Vargas ha ayudado a formar nuevas generaciones de músicos en la República Dominicana. Es el Coordinador del Berklee Music Project en Santo Domingo.

Ha participado además en notables proyectos musicales de importancia cultural en la República Dominicana, incluyendo el Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, actuando con artistas aclamados internacionalmente.

Dirigiendo su propio proyecto musical ATRE, una banda de fusión de jazz, presenta un repertorio de composiciones originales, las cuales son una mezcla de influencias del jazz, rock, folclore dominicano y música clásica contemporánea.

Javier Vargas Heredia (Javielo) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is a guitarist, composer, and music educator. He studied classical guitar and popular music in the National Conservatory of Music, and earned his Degree in Music Education from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.

Javier also studied Professional Music with a concentration in Jazz Composition and Performance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He is currently Director of the Department of Popular and Folk Music of the National Conservatory of Music, Music Professor at the University of Santo Domingo, and Academic Director of the Musical Institute in Santo Domingo.

Javier Vargas’ work as a music educator has supported the latest generations of musicians in the Dominican Republic. He serves as the Coordinator for the Berklee Music Project in Santo Domingo.

Performing in noteworthy cultural events in the Dominican Republic and abroad, Javier Vargas leads his own musical project Atre, a Jazz-Fusion band that presents a repertoire of original compositions which are a mix of Jazz, Rock, Dominican Folklore and Contemporary Classical Music.

RONI eytan Jerusalem born harmonica player Roni Eytan is a pioneering musician, conveying a unique sound with original techniques.

He also plays the microtonal harmonica, an instrument designed especially for him to play Middle Eastern Maqamat (Middle Eastern modes). This instrument is the first of its kind to have ever been made.

Roni and his band have performed at such international jazz festivals as the Panama Jazz Festival and the Toronto Jazz Festival. His musical language draws influences from Jazz, music of the Middle East and North Africa (Andalusian Music), all of which are part of Roni’s musical roots and cultural identity.

In 2010, Roni began studying at the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship and graduated as part of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. In 2013, he was chosen to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Workshop led by Jason Moran at the Kennedy Center. In March 2014, at the age of 23, Roni Eytan joined the Grammy winning pianist, Danilo Perez, and toured with his quartet for two years all over the world playing in major venues and international festivals.

Guy Frometa es un percusionista de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana. Frometa inicia los primeros toques de batería a los 5 años de edad. Cuando tenía 18 años comenzó a tocar con Luis Días & Transporte Urbano, una de las bandas de rock más emblemáticas en la República Dominicana, con la cual actúo desde 1983 hasta el 2016.

En 1988, Guy se trasladó a Nueva York para estudiar en la Drummers Collective, con una gran variedad de profesores particulares.

Después de casi una década de estudios, actuaciones y perfeccionamiento de su talento, Guy retornó a Santo Domingo en 1997. Ha participado en festivales de jazz alrededor del mundo, en países como Estados Unidos, Japón, Canadá, Dinamarca, Perú, Cuba, Venezuela, España, Argentina, México y en su nativa República Dominicana.

Por su trabajo como baterista/percusionista ha sido nominado para el

Guy Frometa is a percussionist from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He began playing drums at the age of 5, and when he was 18 years old, began playing drums with Luis Dias & Transporte Urbano, one of the most emblematic rock bands in the Dominican Republic, with whom he performed with from 1983 through 2006.

In 1988 he moved to NYC to study at Drummers Collective plus an array of private teachers. After nearly a decade of studies, gigs and perfecting his craft, Guy returned to Santo Domingo in 1997. He has participated in Jazz festivals around the world, in such countries as the USA, Japan, Canada, Denmark, Peru, Cuba, Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, Mexico and his native Dominican Republic.

Saxophonist George Garzone is a veteran jazzman, and has appeared on over 20 recordings.

He began on the tenor when he was six, played in a family band and attended music school in Boston.

Garzone is well-known as a sought-after jazz educator, currently teaching at the Berklee College of Music. He has also previously taught at New England Conservatory, Longy School of Music, New York University, Manhattan School of Music, Northeastern University and the New School University. His students have included Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis and Danilo Perez, to name a few.

Garzone is a member of The Fringe, a jazz trio founded in 1972 that includes bassist John Lockwood and drummer Bob Gullotti, which performs regularly in the Boston area and has toured Portugal. The group has released three albums. He is also a member of the Grammywinning Joe Lovano Nonet, and performed and recorded with this group at the Village Vanguard in NYC.

is an American trumpeter and composer featured on the 2007 Grammy Awardwinning album Turned to Blue by Nancy Wilson. As a bandleader, Jones has released seven albums under the Mack Avenue Records label.

WHEN SEAN WAS A 19-YEAR OLD STUDENT AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY HE MET THE MAGNIFICENT JOHN COLTRANE THROUGH HIS MASTERPIECE A LOVE SUPREME, AND HE SAYS “I KNEW THE COURSE I NEEDED TO PURSUE”

After receiving his Master’s degree from Rutgers University, Sean performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. This marked the beginning of a relationship with Wynton Marsalis, who offered Sean a permanent position as lead trumpeter and Jones remained there until 2010.

Recognizing the power of music to impact one’s life, Sean attributes his change of instruments from the drums to the trumpet upon his first exposure to Miles Davis at the age of 10. Twenty-five years later, he still cites Miles’ overall artistic vision and purity of sound as his greatest personal influence.

A highly respected and in-demand musician even while at Rutgers, Sean was prominently featured with a number of artists, recording and/or performing with many major figures, including Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson and Marcus Miller. The relationship with Miller led to another highly impacting experience when Sean was selected by Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their Tribute to Miles tour in 2011.

Heavily involved in education, Sean has recently joined the Berklee College of Music’s distinguished faculty as the Chair of the Brass Department.

Marco Pignataro is currently the Managing Director of Berklee Global Jazz Institute and serves as Artistic Advisor to the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival and FEDUJAZZ.

Marco Pignataro is a talented saxophonist, composer, and educator originally from Bologna, Italy. He has performed extensively in Europe and America at jazz festivals and international music venues sharing stages with artists such as Eddie Gomez, Joanne Brackeen, Danilo Pérez, George Garzone, John Patitucci, Rufus Reid, Billy Drummond, and Victor Lewis among others.

Marco Pignataro’s latest album Sofia’s Heart was produced by jazz legend Eddie Gomez and features Marco’s compositions and arrangements, with Eddie Gomez, Bill Drummond, Matt Marvuglio and Mark Kramer.

The acclaimed album Per Semper by the Eddie Gomez Quintet with Marco Pignataro was released by BFM discs in 2012. Marco’s new CD Almas Antiguas with Eddie Gómez, Alan Pasqua, Adam Cruz and George Garzone was released in the summer of 2017.

Marco was Director, Department of Jazz and Caribbean music, and the Chair of Jazz Saxophone, at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. During his tenure there, he developed the jazz saxophone curriculum, founded and directed the CMPR Jazz Faculty Ensemble and co-founded the Bachelor’s degree in music in jazz and Caribbean Music Studios.

Alan Pasqua, Professor of Jazz Studies at USC Thornton School of Music, has played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jack Dejohnette, Paul Motion, Dave Holland, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Joe Henderson, Stanley Clarke, Gary Burton, James Moody, Gary Peacock, Gary Bartz, Reggie Workman, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Sheila Jordan and Joe Williams. Aside from his many critically acclaimed recordings as a leader, in 2008, Pasqua joined forces with Peter Erskine and Dave Carpenter, arranging, co-producing and playing on the Grammy Award nominated trio album “Standards”. His latest release, “Twin Bill” (BFM JAZZ) features Pasqua recorded on two pianos, playing the music of Bill Evans and has achieved critical acclaim.

While performing a concert at Carnegie Hall in 1975, Pasqua met the legendary drummer Tony Williams. Pasqua was asked to join The New Tony Williams Lifetime along with guitarist Allan Holdsworth. After recording two “Lifetime” albums for Columbia Records, Pasqua relocated in Los Angeles. His career in L.A. broadened as he started playing with more rock and pop artists. ADAM CRUZ El extraordinario ritmo de Cruz lo ha convertido en uno de los bateristas más destacados de la actualidad.

Adam Cruz is a drummer and composer born in New York City who is best known for his work with Danilo Perez, Tom Harrell, and Edward Simon. He has toured with Chick Corea, and recorded with him for Origin, and Live at the Blue Note.

Cruz has been a member of the Danilo Perez Trio, along with bassist Ben Street, for over 10 years, and is a member of the newly formed Tom Harrell quartet Trip featuring Mark Turner and Ugonna Okegwo. He has worked at

various times in groups led by artists such as Chris Potter, John Patitucci, Pharaoh Sanders, Joey Calderazzo, and Paquito D’Rivera.

In 2011 Cruz released his debut recording as a composer and bandleader entitled Milestone, on Sunnyside Records, to great critical acclaim.

Cruz’s remarkable musicianship has made him one of the most in demand drummers of today.

EHUD ETTUN El contrabajista israelí Ehud Ettun ha realizado presentaciones en lugares tan prestigiosos como Blue Note en Nueva York, el Kennedy Center de Washington y el Symphony Hall de Boston.

William Cepeda tiene dos licenciaturas en arte, una en composición y arreglos de jazz y otra en educación musical, y una maestría en interpretación de jazz. Su obra incluye música clásica, una obra de orquesta de completa duración para la sinfonía, la ópera, el coro y los solistas. Estudió en el Berklee College of Music de Boston, en el Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico y en la Escuela de Música Aaron Copland Queens College.

La banda de Cepeda ha actuado en los Estados Unidos, Europa y America Latina. El grupo tocó en la sala Miles Davis en el festival de Jazz de Montreux y también en el Festival de Jazz del North Sea, presentándose en el Festival de Jazz de Tabarka en Tunicia y en Banlieues Bleues.

Known as a cultural icon of Puerto Rico, Grammy-nominated trombonist, composer and educator William Cepeda revolutionized the field of Latin music with his introduction of Afro-Rican Jazz, an innovative blend of world music, progressive jazz and traditional Afro-Puerto Rican roots and folk music and dance.

William Cepeda’s oeuvre includes contemporary classical music, a full-length orchestral work for the symphony, opera, choir, and soloists. Willam Cepeda was educated at Berklee College of Music in Boston, the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico, and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He has two Bachelors of Art degrees (one in jazz composition and arranging and one in music education) and a Master’s degree in jazz performance.

Cepeda’s band has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Latin America. The group performed in the Miles Davis Hall at the Montreux Jazz Festival as well as at the North Sea Jazz Festival, featured at the Tabarka Jazz Festival in Tunisia and at Banlieues Bleues.

Fefita es una de las más conocidas representantes del género ‘Perico Ripiao’ o merengue ‘típico’. “Fefa”, según la llaman sus amigos, parientes, y admiradores más cercanos, nació en la región del Cibao de la República Dominicana, lugar de nacimiento del merengue.

FEFITA LA GRANDE, LA VIEJA FEFA O LA MAYIMBA (MANUELA JOSEFA CABRERA) ES LA MÁS PROLÍFICA Y RESPETADA ACORDEONISTA FEMENINA DE MERENGUE DE LA REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA.

Fefita aprendió por su cuenta a tocar el acordeón de su padre y se presentó en conciertos en vivo desde los 9 años de edad. Fefita desarrolló un estilo único de tocar merengue típico que sólo ella fue capaz de producir. Junto con los primeros exponentes del “nuevo” merengue típico, añadió congas, saxofones y bajo eléctrico a su conjunto, que originalmente estaba compuesto por tres músicos: un acordeonista (con un acordeón diatónico de dos filas), una tambora (‘tamborero’), y una persona tocando la güira (‘güirero’).

Fefita fue también la primera en llevar el merengue típico al público europeo. Logra su éxito, en parte por su capacidad para mantenerse al día, reinventando constantemente su sonido y colaborando con los nuevos artistas del “típico”, y así atrayendo a diferentes generaciones.

Fefita is also one of the most well-known representatives of the Perico Ripiao or Merengue tipico music genre. She was born in the Cibao Region of the Dominican Republic, the birthplace of merengue

Fefita taught herself to play on her father’s accordion and was performing in live concerts by the age of 9. Fefita developed a unique style of playing merengue tipico that only she was able to produce. Along with the early exponents of new merengue tipico, she added congas, saxophones, and electric bass to her ensemble, which was originally composed of three musicians: an accordionist (using a diatonic 2-row accordion), a tambora player (tamborero), and güira player (guirero).

Fefita was also the first to bring merengue tipico to European audiences. Her success is partially achieved by her ability to stay current and constantly reinvent her sound by collaborating with new tipico artists, appealing to all generations.

Cumplir 20 años en cualquier actividad es un acto heroico. Caminar de manera ininterrumpida por dos décadas, destaca un alto nivel de perseverancia, cualidad que genera la evolución necesaria que adjudica grandeza y lleva al posicionamiento.

Es lo que ha hecho el Dominican Republic Jazz Festival -DRJF-, hoy señalado como el más importante de los festivales que se realiza en República Dominicana y con alta valoración entre los de la región del Caribe.

En el DRJF 2016, donde el protagonismo lo tuvo la mujer, quedó de manifiesto un indiscutible respaldo a la igualdad de género. Que mejor manera de celebrar un veinteavo aniversario con intérpretes dominicanas y de otras latitudes que engrandecen el universo de la música.

Joanne Brakeen demostró veteranía y gran dominio de una técnica vanguardista en la ejecución del piano; Lihi Haruvi protagonizó un ambiente de buena vibra que se mantuvo mientras se escuchaban las notas de sus saxofones; el virtuosismo de Tía Fuller quedó de manifiesto, capturando uno de los mejores momentos del evento; Esperanza Spalding regaló una mágica presentación, donde su canto y el discurso de su contrabajo entraron en plena complicidad con los presentes; Patricia Zarate viajó y puso a viajar al público, balanceándose en un mar de fusión con toques y melodías del folklore chileno; y otra veterana, Terry Line Carrintong, impactó grandemente, tanto en su participación junto a estudiantes del Berklee Global Jazz Institute, así como la representación especial junto a Geri Allen, Ingrid Jensen y Linda Oh. El complemento perfecto se dio con las anfitrionas. Laura Bonifacio, junto a la Big Band del Conservatorio Nacional de Música, demostró que el cielo es su techo; Patricia Pereyra una vez más sorprendió entre matices y una representación de ensueño; Sabrina Estepan, manejó su portentosa voz a la perfección, paseándola por un repertorio diverso entre lo local y global; Enerolisa y su grupo de salves dio el toque tradicional, llevando el festival al más alto nivel de entusiasmo. Al final el merengue se creció en su región, engalanado por una magistral presentación de Maridalia Hernández, La India Canela y Vilma Olivences, quienes junto a la orquesta de Jochy Sánchez, pusieron a bailar a cientos de espectadores.

A todo lo narrado se le agrega la atinada decisión de integrar a Santo Domingo como escenario de apertura, ampliando el alcance territorial y, sobre todo, permitiendo el disfrute de aquellos capitalinos amantes del jazz, que por alguna razón se ven impedidos de movilizarse hacia la parte norte del país.

Lo contado no hubiese sido posible sin el constante trabajo voluntario de gestores comunitarios de todos los niveles que, además del trabajo en los conciertos, unen sus esfuerzos de Fedujazz, organización sin fines de lucro, que desde el 2012 viene creando impacto en niños y niñas de Puerto Plata, además de ser veedora de este evento.

Son estos signos que retratan la importancia de un Festival que mira más allá del ocio y que, entre sus múltiples miradas, no descansa en su reinvención, plateándose de retos.

El desempeño de su vigésimo primera entrega hablará.

El pasado festival coronó aquel transitar con un evento poderoso, innovador, aplaudido y defendido por un público que se movilizó a pesar de las constantes lluvias de aquellos días.

SIGNS of a great celebration

Celebrating a 20 year anniversary of any event is an heroic feat.

To march undeterred shows a tremendous level of perseverance, a quality necessary to evolve as needed to consolidate greatness and positioning. This is what the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival (DR jazz Fest), has done, distinguishing it as the most important festival celebrated in the Dominican Republic as well as held in high regard within the entire Caribbean region.

Women were the protagonists of the program leaving a clear manifesto in support of equal rights. What better way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary with Dominican performers as well as other parts of the World who elevate the universe of music.

The lineup was divided between international artists and native Dominicans: Joanne Brakeen showed her incredible mastery of a cutting edge technique on the piano keys; Lihi Haruvi was the protagonist of a good vibes ambience while we listened to every note of her saxophones; the virtuosity of Tía Fuller was clearly manifested, making for one of the most memorable moments of the event; Esperanza Spalding gifted the audience with a magical presentation, where her singing and the discourse from her bass were in complicity with everyone present; Patricia Zarate took the audience with her on her travels balancing in a sea of fusion with accents and melodies from Chilean folklore; and yet another veteran, Terry Lynne Carrington, made a strong impact with her performance with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, as well as with her performance in the special presentation with Geri Allen, Ingrid Jensen y Linda Oh. The perfect complement was experienced in the performances of the hosts: Laura Bonifacio, together with the Big Band from the National Conservatory, proved that the sky is her limit ; Patricia Pereyra once more surprised with a nuanced and a mystical performance; Sabrina Estepan, expertly controlled her wonderous voice to perfection, meandering through a diverse local and global repertoire; Enerolisa and her group gave a folkloric touch with her group’s traditional songs, elevating the festival to a new level of enthusiasm for their music. For the closing night, the regional Merengue shined with the master performances of Maridalia Hernández, La India Canela and Vilma Olivences, who, together with the Jochy Sánchez orchestra, had hundreds of spectators up out of their seats and dancing.

It is important to add to this narration the excellent decision to integrate Santo Domingo for the opening night, expanding the reach to more parts of the country, and above all, allowing those Capital city’s jazz lovers to enjoy the festival who for diverse reasons are unable to attend the concerts on the North Shore.

This history could not be told without the constant volunteer and community work at all levels that support the Fedujazz Foundation, a nonprofit organization which has since 2012 been impacting the lives of girls and boys from the Puerto Plata province.

These are the elements that make up the importance of a Festival that sees beyond leisure, that has multiple reasons for being, and does not cease to reinvent and challenge itself. The 21st Festival will speak for itself.

La Fundación Educativa Dominican Republic Jazz Festival se abrazó a la visión de crear una comunidad más justa e inclusiva a través de programas de educación musical enfatizados en el jazz.

EN CADA EDICIÓN DEL DOMINICAN REPUBLIC JAZZ FESTIVAL LOS ESTUDIANTES TIENEN LA OPORTUNIDAD DE PRESENTAR EL FRUTO DE UN AÑO DE TRABAJO Y PREPARACIÓN.

E l proyecto anual de música de FEDUJAZZ, iniciado el 14 de Febrero de 2015, ofrece a niños, niñas y adolescentes de Cabarete, programas estructurados de educación musical, con el fin de complementar y mejorar su formación y ofrecerles nuevas oportunidades de vida.

FEDUJAZZ dispone de un espacio físico donde más de 200 estudiantes reciben clases de iniciación musical, solfeo, piano, batería, flauta traversa, clarinete, trompeta, saxofón, guitarra, percusión y bajo.

El objetivo principal de la institución es usar la música como un ente de cambio social, al proporcionarles a los participantes del programa la oportunidad de acceder a enseñanza musical gratuita en diversos instrumentos y darles la posibilidad de desarrollar sus habilidades y talentos.

Cada año, artistas nacionales e internacionales visitan Cabarete para participar en el Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, estos artistas forman parte de los talleres y programas de música que se imparten a estos niños y jovenes, la mayoría, en situación de vulnerabilidad. Durante los días de concierto músicos de la talla de John Patitucci, David Sánchez, Pedrito Martínez, Javier Vargas, Mario Canonge, Josean Jacobo y muchísimo otros hacen su visita a las aulas y comparten sus experiencias, vivencias y conocimientos con estos pequeños futuros musicos dominicanos.

Gracias al trabajo continuo y constante de la institución se ha logrado formar cuatro ensambles: Fedujazz Recorder Project, Ensamble de Jazz Contemporáneo, Fedujazz Woodwind-Brass Big Band y un Ensamble de Percusión.

The Educational Foundation of Jazz holds the vision of creating a community that is more fair and inclusive, through different education programs emphasized on jazz.

The yearly music project of FEDUJAZZ, started on February 14th of 2015, offers structured music educations programs to children and teens of Cabarete, with the purpose of complementing and bettering their formation and giving them new life opportunities.

FEDUJAZZ provides a physical space where more than 200 students receive classes, of initiation to music, solfege, piano, drums, transverse flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, guitar, percussion and bass.

The main goal of the institution is to use music for social change, providing its participants the opportunity to have access to free music education on diverse instruments and give them the possibility to develop their abilities and talent.

Each year, national and international artists visit Cabarete to participate with the Dominican Republic Jazz festival, and take part of the workshops and programs for these boys and girls, the majority being in vulnerable situations.

During the concert days of impacting artists as John Patitucci, David Sánchez, Pedrito Martínez, Javier Vargas, Mario Canonge, Josean Jacobo, and many others, they come by the classrooms

Thanks to the constant work of the institution, we have been able to create 4 ensembles: a Fedujazz Recorder Project, a Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, a Fedujazz Woodwind-Brass Big Band and a Percussion Ensemble.

IN EVERY EDITION OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC JAZZ FESTIVAL, THE STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM THE RESULTS OF EACH YEAR’S WORK AND PREPARATION.
