Save the Date! 10th Annual “Swinging for Seniors” Golf Tournament April 10th

Mornings with Karl Karl Westermann, 93, a Drive a Senior client since 2007, is visited every Wednesday by Mike Scott, a volunteer over 20 years his junior. Despite the age difference, Karl and Mike have many similarities. Both are retired Navy men and scientists, who have a passion for improving their communities through service, art, and invention. Karl believes: “When there’s a need, there can be invention. Without a need, there can never be anything invented.”

The necessity of Drive a Senior sprung from just such a need in 1985 and Karl is a prime example of the local seniors who use our services. He needs minimal assistance to maintain his happy and healthy independence. Karl lives alone in the Round Rock residence he built himself, full of history, creativity and invention. Not only does Mike offer Karl steady companionship, he provides free transportation to medical appointments and help with paperwork.

Mike is quick to clarify, however, that he receives more out of the arrangement than Karl. This morning’s visit alone was filled with so many interesting stories and laughter, it is difficult to judge who receives more from this destined friendship. Mike was introduced to Drive a Senior through the Highpoint Fellowship and fellow volunteer Mike Strong. “I am extremely happy with Drive a Senior and I’m very honored to be an active member of this organization.” To learn more about Mike & Karl, view their complete interview at: www.driveasenior.net

Drive a Senior was awarded $14,750 to move “Ollie’s Loan Closet” to our office location. This capital grant will be used to purchase a portable building to store used medical equipment which is loaned out to the community at no charge. The funding will allow us to purchase used medical equipment such as transfer tub benches, rolling walkers and wheelchairs. For the past 20 years, Ollie Leppin, a dedicated volunteer, has operated this program on behalf of Drive a Senior at his home. To honor his dedication, we plan to name this new building “Ollie’s Closet.” The St. David’s Foundation also awarded Drive a Senior, $22,000 so we can expand and grow our Van Program. The funding will allow us to hire a part-time van driver to coordinate and expand the van services to our seniors. In 2013, we provided over 1200 van rides to area seniors, and this grant will help Drive a Senior provide services to more of our area seniors. The funding from St. David’s Foundation helps our organization meet the growing needs of the community. We are very grateful for their support. For more information on the St. David’s Foundation, go to www.stdavidsfoundation.org.

Medical Equipment Donations Needed: We get over 200 calls a month from social workers, clients and people in the community looking for medical equipment to borrow. When you are Spring Cleaning, please donate unwanted medical equipment to Drive a Senior. We are in need of Wheel Chairs, Transfer Tub Benches , Bath Benches and Walkers.

We can pick these up or you can deliver to our office at 2498 E. Palm Valley Blvd, Round Rock.

We appreciate the support of these community partners:

Keeping Seniors Independent Alexander and Joycelyn DeCoux moved to Pflugerville from Louisiana when their life changed in June 2013 after he suffered a massive stroke. He had driven a car for 73 years and never had to depend on anyone. His daughter was helping them, but she lives out of town and needed help driving her parents to and from all their appointments. After contacting Drive a Senior and going through the client assessment they learned they were qualified for services and that we would assist them immediately. Since Alexander is a veteran we have driven them numerous times to the VA Hospital as well as taken Joycelyn to her various doctor’s appointments. Of course, they need food too, so Joycelyn also takes advantage of the van rides we provide to HEB and Walmart. Our commitment to helping them maintain their independence continues. They have indicated that without Drive a Senior they don’t know what they would do. They have made wonderful friends with our volunteers and have enjoyed the time with the other seniors on the van rides. The various volunteers that have driven Alexander and Joycelyn love them and can’t wait to drive them again. Keeping seniors independent is our mission. Helping to make the lives of our senior neighbors easier by providing rides to various places is a win-win for everyone!
