Uranium mining was booming in the western part of the Mecsek in the late 1950’s. At this time, a new grammar school was founded by Pécs in the rapidly developing area. Without a separate building, the education took place at the Donát Bánki Elementary School. The first year students were graduated in 1967, when the new building of the Grammar School was opened in the Veres Endre street. Besides the normal grammar school classes a technical college operated there as well, with trade, manufacturer, surveyor, and postman classes. In 1989, the Grammar School became an integral part of the University of Pécs. Three years later, when a new building was added to the institution, the Grammar School was renamed Mihály Babits Grammar School. Our School pays special attention to the environment, healthy living, and family life issues. The advanced teaching of English and German language has special importance as well. The students of the English and German classes get a high level of language education. The biology-physics, the mathematics-informatics and the human-art specialised classes have the opportunity to learn the specialised courses via an increased number of teaching hours. The technical college students get postal and logistic education. The Grammar School has three computer rooms, a language laboratory, a library, high level teaching and class rooms, two gymnasiums and a glasshouse. Our students are surpassingly active at self-government activities, after school sport and cultural activities, and at voluntary work too.
