Plans for new hotel and university halls in Sidcup The Developer is proposing to demolish Christopher House in Station Road and replace it with a 106bedroom Premier Inn and a nine-storey halls of residence for Rose Bruford College. Professor Michael Earley, the principal and CEO of the Lamorbey Park-based university, which specialises in theatre and performance, believes the development will help “benefit the regeneration and growth of Sidcup as a desirable place”. Developer Pure Lake Group has put forward Plans to build a hotel and university accommodation on the current grounds of Christopher House located on the corner of Station Road and Longlands Road.

THE CHOIR THAT'S ROCKING SIDCUP Do you love to sing in the shower or croon along to the car radio, yet have never had the confidence or opportunity to take it any further? Now you can! Singing sensation Rock Choir offers fun, weekly signing sessions in Sidcup/Chislehurst, Eltham, East Dulwich, Blackheath and Bexleyheath. New members are always welcome, and anyone interested in joining can try a FREE taster session. Rock Choir is the UK's largest and most popular contemporary choir, with more than 16,000 members in over 250 local communities. It was started in 2005, by award winning singer and musician Caroline Redman Lusher, who set out to create a modern, contemporary choir for adults and teenagers. A team of 55 highly trained Rock Choir Leaders run the choir sessions throughout the UK, including Sidcup's very own Rock Choir Leader, Michael Fricker. "Rock Choir is very different to more traditional choirs and choral societies," explains Michael. "You don't have to read music and there are no auditions. We sing our own, special arrangements of feel good chart and pop songs, and get invited to perform at some really exciting events. We use as many performances as possible to raise money for charities and local causes. In 2012 alone we helped raise over £1 million." In the eight years since it started, Rock Choir has released two top twenty albums, broken three Guinness World Records, been the subject of popular 3-part ITV1 documentary 'The Choir That Rocks', and performed at hundreds of local and national events. In July, Michael's Rock Choir members were part of a huge, exciting summer concert at London's 02 Arena. Eltham Rock Choir members are currently organising Christmas Gift Fair, to raise money for Rock Choir's two affiliated charities, Missing People and Refuge (see below). "It's amazing that most people who come along to try out Rock Choir don’t necessarily think they are very good singers at all," says Michael. "We firmly believe anyone can sing, and the beautiful rich sound the choir makes after just a few rehearsals is incredible. As well as giving people the chance to reawaken their love of singing, being in Rock Choir is a great way to met new people and enjoy some 'me' time each week. We’ve got lots of exciting performances in the pipeline too!"

The Help to Buy: Mortgage guarantee scheme was launched early October in an effort to stimulate house buying and to help first-time buyers to get on to the property ladder. A number of high street banks and lenders have already joined the scheme, however the scheme is still drawing criticism from some.

High street banks will start offering Help to Buy mortgages from today, including RBS, Halifax and Natwest. Virgin Money has also today announced that they will participate in the scheme, offering mortgages in the New Year. The majority of banks participating in the scheme appear to be offering mortgages at a rate of approximately 5%.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne said: “Through Help to Buy: mortgage guarantee I want to help those families that have saved for years, earn decent salaries, but cannot afford the deposits currently being asked for by the banks. London Councils publishes new analysis showing London needs 809,000 new homes London Councils published new research showing that 809,000 homes are needed in London by 2021 to meet new and existing housing need. The analysis shows that, between 2011 and 2021, 526,000 new homes will need to be built just to keep up with new housing demand, with only 250,000 homes to be built on current projections. Commenting on this, London Councils' Executive Member for Housing, Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, said: “The news that London needs almost a million homes by 2021 is a scandal - the last time we faced such an acute housing supply crisis was after the Second World War. This is a long time coming and the capital's future prosperity is on the line. “Rising housing costs are not only a problem for those struggling to rent but for any Londoner wishing to buy their own home. If the housing crisis is not solved, costs for the London economy will continue to spiral. More working families will struggle to rent and to buy, more people could be forced out of the capital and homelessness is very likely to go up.” London Councils’ discussion paper sets out a range of policy solutions to boost housing supply. This includes lifting the “Housing Borrowing Cap” which prevents councils investing in housing – a move supported by the wider housing and property sector. Other policies include increasing investment in the rental sector, supporting smaller scale builders, and promoting sustainable development near London’s tube and rail network.
