prototype #1 prototype #2 intro to final project prototyping the final project (prototype #3) wire frames user roles documentation

PROTOTYPE #1

Because we have readers from over 80 countries, we wanted to see how people who did not speak English as their first language interact with the magazine. We wanted to know: How effective is our design? Is there too much text for an online magazine? What parts do you like? What parts do you not like? We made four mini issues with varying amounts of text and images.

response to prototype #1 after we received feedback we made a list of some of things that we found to be most common or important: •Simplify- especially with photo spreads (in the context of this prototype, people did not like the faux diary entries) •Don’t say something in 10 words if you can say it in 5. •More pull quotes, little descriptions •Don’t distract from the photos •TOC should be utilitarian (square images included made things more confusing) •Cover should be free and clear •Really try to get a sense for articles in advance •Add more process to interpretation •Give more concrete prompts •Find things that interest people •Add prices when possible- prices can be a main point of interest 2/3

PROTOTYPE #2 response to prototype #2 •Consistency/fluidity- Have the design follow through the whole media kit •Profile our reader- Create a graphic for them •Add more graphics in general •Immerse the viewer in the content- Have the Media Kit convey the DMM experience or DMM as a brand •Become more creative- low stats allow for more creativity, take advantage of that •Cite where our stats are from

For our second prototype we worked on developing our media kit. We made three different versions. With our final project we will have to create more than one media kit, so currently we are working on that as well.

Design Problem Recently, we attempted to use our statistics to better understand how we can keep our current readers, and attract more. We found that it was difficult to gain a sense of the bigger picture because all of our statistics were for separate sections of the whole. In addition to this, we found that traffic was not flowing between our sites in the way we would have liked. Design Solution To solve these problems, we would like to create a network dedicated to all of our topics located under a single URL. Goals We hope to build a better sense for our demographic to enable us to strengthen our brand. This approach would further solidify our brand by allowing for more total design approach. Plan Our plan is to create a site designed to allows people to feel comfortable moving between our focuses and promotes balance between them. To accomplish this, over the next semester we must expand upon the site designs that we have begun and then code it. Objectives Creation of a business model What type of business Our budget Developing the aesthetic of and then building our network site Complete detailed wire frames Complete detailed site map Hire a developer Contact current contributors and gather writers Within the network Creation of an editorial calendar for our blogs Continue updating magazine Continue networking Media kit for our network Media kit for our magazine

PROTOTYPE #3 Our third prototype is a map for the development of our network.

Our logo:

We began by creating a list of all of the content we would want our website as well as any different options that we would like to have within the site’s framework. We created a logo based off of two of the three typefaces we use in the magazine. We looked at several different websites that have a similar type of concept as we do and made lists of things we like and do not like about their layouts and ways we think it could be improved. We have decided to keep the color palette and type minimal but in a way where our navigation would still be noticeable.

DMN gives the average person a better sense of self, and a greater ability to rationalize and enjoy the world around them. As creatives, we are able to see the complex and simplistic wonders of the world and DMN strives to share that with others. We seek out the blogging community because bloggers have shown an interest in self-expression and DMN wishes to aid them in their pursuit of it.

OGNIZE that the first picture is from our sixth issue of Dress Me but you may not have noticed the Nordic product e this photograph happen! Both the heart shaped tin and stockings are from Danish design company Maileg. If you ou can buy them at Sockerbit located on Christopher Street like we did (http://www.sockerbit.com) or you can also check their website (http://www.maileg.com) for a list of online retailers

This is why we are Dress Me. Clothes change the way a person thinks of themselves and the way they interact with the world. DMN would like to do the same in order to make the world a better place. DMN aims to clarify who you are, how your identify and present yourself.

SASHA PIVOVAROVA X GAPBODY 3.12.2011 | 3:44 PM | MARIEL B.

BEING THE VOVARHOLIC that I am, I was more than excited when I found out that Sasha Pivovarova was doing a collaboration with Gap Body. This bra is one of the two things I picked up from the collection. It is so comfortable and soft, I definitely recommend it to anyone! It is so perfect! You can make like a fairy too and buy it here.

DO NOT ASK ME WHY, I know it is not the most weather appropriate look but currently I would like to be wearing this. The color pallet and mixtures of fabrics and textures looks cozy. Perfect for the train ride that Jordan and I are currently on. The CALYPSO St. Barth vest is kind of random seeming, but like I said before the weather is cold and apparently snowy so the outfit kind of calls for a jacket with more substance than this one from Alexander Wang. The vest seemed to be the only solution. I know the shoes, also from Alexander Wang, are not exactly snow proof either but I balanced that out with the fur cuff from Wendy Nichol and cashmere bottoms from Vince. It is fashion math. The top is from Miu Miu and the bag is from Prada.

I AM NOT SURE IF waffle knit tops are suddenly a rare thing or if I have just been looking in the wrong places but I am starting to think that I am the only person who think that they are perfect for Fall. I ordered this Free People one off of Karmaloop. It is just the kind I have been looking for! Do you guys know of any good shops for waffle knits, online or not?

TRISH McEVOY FINISH LINE 5.12.2011 | 6:32PM | MARIEL B.

ONE THING THAT I was not able to find when picking up my winter makeup was Tightline Activator by Laura Mercier (a liquid that turns powder makeup like eye shadow into liquid eyeliner that you apply with an eyeliner brush). Even though I use NARS liquid eyeliner, which has a spongy tip, I like to use the activator for a stronger, more defined line. Also, because it turns any color eye shadow/blush/etc. into eyeliner, you can use any color for eyeliner. After not being able to find it at a couple of stores, I decided to try a different brand. I picked up Finish Line by Trish McEvoy, which is pretty much the same thing. I recommend both!

WINTER BEAUTY ESSENTIALS 03.12.2011 | 4:30PM | MARIEL B.

ALTHOUGH I HAVE been slowly replacing my makeup for the colder months I went all out and picked up most of what was on my list. So exciting and refreshing! I am a Shiseido/NARS/YSL girl if you couldn't already tell! What's on your list of winter beauty essentials?

WINTER BEAUTY ESSENTIALS 03.12.2011 | 4:30PM | MARIEL B.

RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN using some products that KMS sent me from their 'Free Shape' line. The shampoo, conditioner, and a product called Quick Blow Dry, which speeds up your blow dry time. For me this line is great because I blow dry my hair every other day or so (bad I know!) and Free Shape is optimized for keeping your hair healthy and more manageable during the heat styling process. The first picture is from after I used the Free Shape line for the first time. It makes my hair feel extremely soft! PROS: •Healthy hair! •Products prime your hair/make your hair more responsive to heat/provides thermal protection/conditions •Leaves your hair feeling soft throughout the styling process. Including right after you blow dry and are about to use a flat iron. •The 'Quick Blow Dry' REALLY is quick (this product is amazing) •It smells great, even after you are done styling, which is one of my favorite things about this line. CONS: •none!!!!!

THE OTHER DAY I picked up this Red plastic pill container from Pearl River in SoHo. It has a removable divider tray and an imprinted medical cross on the top. So cool! $1.50 at Pear River

THE CROSBY ST. HOTEL 11.12.2011 | 9:37 AM | MARIEL B.

WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT GOING to The Crosby Street Hotel’s bar but usually end up at The Mercer Hotel because I gues it is just more our style. I think it is because The Mercer feels a little bit more personal (the bar at The Crosby is kind of communal, as bars usually are, which is kind of opposite from hotel bars). The interior of The Crosby is lovely, dimly lit and a lot of art pieces. The decoration kind of reminds me of a person’s odd wardrobe that is cool because of its oddness. Either way, the branding at The Crosby is a little uncohesive in a totally planned way, things are branded in groups, for example their Sugar and sweetner packaging is cohesive but their pencils have black and white stripes. Somehow it all works out well in the end!

User Roles Visiting Blogger [16 years old / Female / in search of inspiration, blog content] Tumblr click-through > lands directly on page Here it is important for us to have strong content, and particularly original content. Blog posts of other images can get people to come, but only original content will get people to stay. Non-Blogger (reading and writing) visitor [30 years old / Female / in search of beauty & fashion tips] Google search > lands directly on page Here we should make attempts to bring the viewer to the magazine. Because the individual isn’t a blogger, they’re more likely to be put off by the lack of clear flow of the blog. It is more likely, and we should make more of an effort to bring these readers to the magazine. Magazine Reader [24 Years old / Female / in search of Story, context] Enters though home page We must be sure to include links from the magazine out to our external material as well as vice versa. It is important to recognize that people read out blog but not magazine as well as the reverse. We should attempt to bring these communities together. Artist [26 years old / Male / in search of inspiration] Tumblr click-through > lands directly on page We must make sure to add links that cross the sections (tags) so that users who might assume they only have one type of interest might find new things. It is important to assert that we are focused on modes of personal expression rather than “art forms”. Musician [20 years old / Male / in search of promotion, inspiration] Referral > lands directly on page This situation is one in which DMTV plays an important role. Video allows for incorporation of all of the elements of our magazine, and we can stress all of those to people who otherwise might not pay any attention to other forms of art and expression. Past Contributor [23 years old / Female / Looking for: past issue] Enters on home page > DMM > Archives Possible Advertiser Enters on home page > DMM > About >Media Kit Possible Contributor Enters on home page > DMM > Contact

Aside from sketchbooks for word mapping, writing and taking notes, to document/record our process we have been using programs like Popplet, Bambuser and Google Documents.
