A word from our President

Inclusion as Rotarians – Food for thought Inclusion is a word that is usually associated with the call for fairness of treatment of groupings of minorities within our community.

Our new RI President, Jennifer Jones, urges us all to treat inclusion within Rotary as an individual responsibility by demonstrating a commitment to listening to and encouraging others.

Merri Outreach Support Service (MOSS) - Mark Goodie

It was a great pleasure to welcome CEO of Merri Outreach Support Service (MOSS), Mark Goodie, to breakfast last week. Mark told us of the great work that MOSS does in supporting and advocating for homeless people in our region and of the incredible range of services offered. From humble beginnings in an office supplied by St Joseph's church in Northcote 33 years to program based in multiple sites in the inner north, MOSS continues to grow despite many challenges the most recent obviously being COVID. The vision of MOSS is: “Striving to end homelessness, sustaining housing, strengthening communities” and its mission is to treat all people equally by ensuring they feel welcomed, connected, involved, secure and supported.

History 33 years of operation: MOSS started with 2 staff and now has 80 staff and 10 volunteers There are two main offices in Northcote and Broadmeadows with additional offices in Northcote, Brunswick, Heidelberg and Reservoir Diverse Homelessness program: MOSS has a vast and diverse range of programs which include a youth refuge, support to over 55’s in Highrise towers, assertive outreach, transitional support programs , social support groups , crisis programs, NDIS support, youth and family program, volunteer program, foodbank program, community connections program, children's networker positions, COVID programs, HRAR and targeted case management activities.

MOSS, with its experience, has deep connections in our community and recently was proud to announce two local leaders and influencers as MOSS Ambassadors, First Nations Elder, Uncle Jack Charles, with lived experience of homelessness, and Chris Shields, public housing architect and recently President of Preston Rotary.

There was considerable interest among our members for the work that MOSS does and we look forward to further discussions to explore future collaboration. Below and on the following page is a is a summary of facts about MOSS as well as its reponse to the challeneges thrown up

by COVID and future plans.

Key actions/ Challenges: • Working from home • Supporting staff to continue their work • Investing in new equipment and systems • Repurposing programs and services for consumers • Redesigning and launching a new website with a page on the Organisational Ambassador and a donation platform • Commencing a project to increase branding

• Future proofing IT systems and phone systems and reducing costs • Flexible working arrangements being expanded • Working with Darebin City Council to secure a new premises • Starting a men’s shed project on the Barkly St high rise site • Considering if a family unit can be installed at Catchment Youth refuge • -Registration as a Social Housing Provider underway.

-Increase NDIS and My Aged Care service provision.

Covid Outcomes What were the key outcomes for the organisation?

• Mobile access to consumer case management tools and equipment • Better remote monitoring of staff activities and safety.

• Rethinking of office space and meetings • Flexible working contracts which allow for a better work/ life balance
