July 27 - The political brinkmanship over raising the U.S. debt ceiling continues to weigh on markets. Markets fear that if U.S. doesn't fix the debt ceiling, there could be a massive, double-dip recession. There are fears that the country could default on its financial obligations, which sends shockwaves through financial markets. The United States has until Aug. 2 to reach a deal to increase its US$14.3-trillion debt limit or face not being able to pay its bills. But even if a deal is reached, there are fears the U.S. could still lose its top credit rating, which would lead to much higher interest payments. That's the reason commodity markets are under pressure; it's tied to the interest

Canadian home sales pick up in June


ccording to statistics recently released by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), home sales activity over MLS® Systems of Canadian real estate Boards climbed in June 2011 compared to May. Highlights: Ÿ Sales activity climbed from May to June, with a big year-over-year gain reflecting falling demand in June 2010. Ÿ Year-to-date sales remain in line with the ten-year average. Ÿ The number of newly listed homes also rose from May to June. Ÿ National housing market remains firmly entrenched in balanced territory. Ÿ National average price still being skewed upward by the value of sales in expensive Vancouver neighbourhoods, with price gains in other markets providing additional loft. Seasonally adjusted national home sales activity rose 2.6 per cent in June 2011 compared to the previous month. Two-thirds of local markets posted month-over-month gains in June. Activity remained stable in Toronto while declining slightly in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Major markets that saw gains compared to May included Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, London, Hamilton, and Victoria. “Canadian housing demand remains resilient, thanks to low interest rates, job growth, and home buyer confidence in the economy,” said Gary Morse, CREA's President. “That said, local housing market trends often differ from national trends, so buyers and sellers should consult their local REALTOR® to understand how the housing market is shaping up where they live.” Actual (not seasonally adjusted) activity came in 10.8 per cent above June 2010 levels, but this largely reflects falling sales activity last June. This was also the case for the year-overyear increase in activity in May. Yearover-year comparisons in July may also be stretched by falling activity one year ago, since July 2010 marked the low point for activity last year. “The Canadian housing sector remains on a solid footing,” said Gregory Klump, CREA's Chief Economist. “The rise in monthly home sales activity at the end of the second quarter, upbeat business sentiment and hiring intentions, and signs that the Bank of Canada is in no rush to raise interest rates bode well for home sales activity and prices going into the second half of 2011.” National sales activity was down 4.7 per cent in the second quarter compared to levels in the first quarter. This in part reflects how new mortgage rules announced in January and implemented at the end of March pulled sales forward into the first quarter at the expense of sales activity in April and May.

Toronto, July 18, 2011 – During the first 14 days of July, Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported an increase in sales and the average selling price compared to the first two weeks of July 2010. The number of sales through the Toronto MLS® system was up 35 per cent to 3,609, compared to 2,672 last year. "Low mortgage rates, rising incomes and good news on the jobs front have kept consumers confident in purchasing a home in the Greater Toronto Area. In fact, home buyers are much more confident than they were this time last year when concerns around the HST, interest rate hikes and new mortgage lending rules had temporarily put a

Some time ago in Calcutta we had great difficulty in getting sugar, and I don't know how the word got around to the children, and a little boy of four years old, Hindu boy, went home and told his parents: I will not eat sugar for three days, I will give my sugar to Mother Teresa for her children. After three days his father and mother brought him to our home. I had never met them before, and this little one could scarcely pronounce my name, but he knew exactly what he had come to do. He knew that he wanted to share his love. …….............................................. You must come to know the poor, maybe our people here have material things, everything, but I think that if we all look into our own homes, how difficult we find it sometimes to smile at each, other, and that the smile is the beginning of love. The other day I received 15 dollars from a man who has been on his back for twenty years, and the only part that he can move is his right hand. And the only companion that he enjoys is smoking. And he said to me: I do not smoke for one week, and I send you this money. I am so used to see the smile on our people, even the dying one smile, and she said: This is nearly every day, they are expecting, they are hoping that a son or daughter will come to visit them. They are hurt because they are forgotten, and see — this is where love comes. That poverty comes right there in our own home, even neglect to love. Maybe in our own family we have somebody who is feeling lonely, who is feeling sick, who is feeling worried, and these are difficult days for everybody. Are we there, are we there to receive them, is the mother there to receive the child? I was surprised in the West to see so many young boys and girls given into drugs, and I tried to find out why — why is it like that, and the answer was: Because there is no one in the family to receive them. Father and mother are so busy they have no time. Young parents are in some institution and the child takes back to the street and gets involved in something. We are talking of peace. These are things that break peace, but I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a direct war, a direct killing — direct murder by the mother herself ……..............................................

At the beginning of the year I told, I spoke everywhere and I said: Let us make this year that we make every single child born, and unborn, wanted. And today is the end of the year, have we really made the children wanted? I will give you something terrifying. We are fighting abortion by adoption, we have saved thousands of lives, we have sent words to all the clinics, to the hospitals, police stations — please don't destroy the child, we will take the child. So every hour of the day and night it is always somebody, we have quite a number of unwedded mothers — tell them come, we will take care of you, we will take the child from you, and we will get a home for the child. And we have a tremendous demand from families who have no children, that is the blessing of God for us. And also, we are doing another thing which is very beautiful — we are teaching our beggars, our leprosy patients, our slum dwellers, our people of the street, natural family planning …….............................................. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition — and I told the Sisters: You take care of the other three, I take of this one that looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand, as she said one word only: Thank you — and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience before her, and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself, I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more — she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As that 4

We have a home for the dying in Calcutta, where we have picked up more than 36,000 people only from the streets of Calcutta, and out of that big number more than 18,000 have died a beautiful death. They have just gone home to God; and they came to our house and we talked of love, of compassion, and then one of them asked me: Say, Mother, please tell us something that we will remember, and I said to them: Smile at each other, make time for each other in your family. Smile at each other. And then another one asked me: Are you married, and I said: Yes, and I find it sometimes very difficult to smile at Jesus because he can be very demanding sometimes. This is really something true, and there is where love comes — when it is demanding, and yet we can give it to Him with joy. Just as I have said today, I have said that if I don't go to Heaven for anything else I will be going to Heaven for all the publicity because it has purified me and sacrificed me and made me really ready to go to Heaven. I think that this is something, that we must live life beautifully, we have Jesus with us and He loves us. If we could only remember that God loves me, and I have an opportunity to love others as he loves me, not in big things, but in small things with great love, then Norway becomes a nest of love. And how beautiful it will be that from here a centre for peace has been given. That from here the joy of life of the unborn child comes out. If you become a burning light in the world of peace, then really the Nobel Peace Prize is a gift of the Norwegian people. God bless you! ecently, a client came to me with a matter to appeal on. My discussions with him made me realize the need to share my experiences with people in this regard. Many individuals sponsor new spouses or other family members to come to Canada without understanding the process clearly. The result is rejection of many applications. Understand that the sponsorship process is complicated. Know if your sponsorship application is rejected you must file an Appeal within a time limit or you will lose your appeal rights. It is a lengthy process. First and foremost, you must have a valid case for appeal. Sometimes, a couple even though validly and genuinely married, do not produce adequate proof to satisfy the concerned authorities. This could have caused the necessity for appeals. The immigration officer is looking for evidence of a legally valid, genuine marriage. You can satisfy this requirement through marriage photos and other documents including communications exchanged.


e are all aware of what happens when we spend more than we can financially handle. Most of us have a fairly good grasp of budgeting and balancing our income with our expenses/savings. Because the consequences can be so dire when we don't manage this area of our lives, we will take action fairly quickly to restore stability. We also know what happens when we eat more than our bodies can process through normal daily life, given our lifestyle and exercise level. There is a wealth of information available to assist us in fine-tuning this relationship, either 'amping' up our energy output, or paring down by dropping useless or nonnutritive foods. For most of us, we will not let this get too out of hand, starting some kind of program within a 5-10 lb. weight gain. In either case, the message is the same – you have to work within the limits of what you have. This same principle applies to Space Management. We do know what it is like to experience Space deprivation, although we may never actually call it that. Anyone who has ever sat in gridlock on the highway has experienced what happens when the number of objects in a Space exceeds the capacity of that Space to process the movement of the objects through it. Nothing moves. In contrast, when the number of vehicles is few, we flow through effortlessly, enjoying the road as it was meant to be enjoyed, (as shown in car commercials) and in a much better mood. And, the luxury of interior automotive Space was spawned, at least in part, by the experiences of previous generations scrunched together during long road trips, while trying to enjoy a vacation. Some of you might remember those pre-SUV days. We might have had a sampling of

The authorities also need to satisfy themselves that you were properly introduced, that you were in constant touch, and you went on a proper honeymoon.

And for some strange reason, we will tend to decrease our need for personal Space, deferring it to 5

Although individual ranges of movement may vary and change with our life stages, the Space must allow for us to extend to our capabilities. Obviously a brand new baby has fewer Space requirements than a six year old, and a thirty-something may have more activities than an advanced senior. Nonetheless the Space should exceed, (albeit slightly) the amount of movement within. 2. Space provides us with growth Forest trees need a certain amount of Space in which to grow. If too dense, the taller, stronger trees will crowd out the weaker ones, blocking their light and rooting for water/minerals. The result is some trees die. Grow or die, and growth needs Space – to work, to sleep, to eat, to play, to relax, and for expansion opportunities. If there were no extra Space beyond which we already occupy, where would we expand? I will continue discussing the benefits of Space and how this applies at home in my next installment. he TTC could be facing a $100million budget hole next year and is scouring for new ways to fill the gap. The cash-strapped TTC has increased the amount of space available for advertising on its subway trains, buses and streetcars. It has awarded advertising rights throughout its system to Pattison Outdoor, with a new contract for 12 years effective January 1, 2012. The new contract covers all advertising opportunities on and in subway stations, trains, buses and streetcars. The stations will be updated with new poster frames featuring local business improvement area (BIA) names. Pattison will also be able to wrap more buses and trains than were previously permitted. The minimum guaranteed payment to the TTC over the first 12 years is $324 million. The Toronto Public Space Initiative has raised voice against this contract. According to TPSI Project Manager Rami Tabello, “a large increase in hightech, flashy, all pervasive, and intrusive ads will make the TTC less enjoyable to use. It could even irritate customers. Toronto's identity and public spaces have a value. We should manage them more like the Swiss bank and less like the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.” Jayme Turney, Executive Director of TPSI opines that our public spaces reflect the vibrant history and diversity of the City and they should not be for sale. “How are these buses going to fit in with the city's street beautification program?” enquires a concerned citizen. “The city has spent many millions of dollars putting in flower boxes, shrubbery, and trees on some streets. All the plants have been colour coordinated and placed into a pattern designed by some landscape architect. Now into this harmonious picture we see twenty colour clashing billboards on a moving bus. Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing?” “If the money can actually be directed towards improvements and expansions, I don't mind. I think the TTC is in a desperate state, which calls for this desperate measure.” Another Torontonian reflects perhaps the majority view. Corporate sponsorship is also in the cards - and companies could re-name entire lines as well as individual stations. Dundas would be used as a pilot project that other stations could copy; Ryerson University president Sheldon Levy confirmed the university's interest in attaching its name to Dundas Station in order to help pay for station improvements. TTC assured critics the commission will have the final say on any serious sponsorship proposal, and the public will have an opportunity to express its views. INTERVIEW WITH JAYME TURNEY Executive Director of Toronto Public Space Initiative (TPSI) Jayme, Dreams & Money appreciates your public initiatives. Whether it is TTC or any other corporation, at the end of the day, surplus money is needed to run the business successfully. In this instance, raising the fare beyond a point is ruled out. So, in your opinion, what is the option for the Mayor, who is elected on the promise of not taxing the people? I value efficiency and sound management as much as much as the Mayor. Nor do I want to see the average person pay more than their fair share of taxes. Over the last 30 years or so we've burdened the poor and middle class with regressive taxes and with wage stagnation. This has helped corporate profits but it's not fair, and it's bad for our economic fundamentals. The best solutions for Toronto's troubles call for strong leadership, effort and creativity. For example, many have pointed out that we don't need to hire highly paid police to guard constructions sites in this city. It's estimated that taxpayers paid $7.8 million in 2009 for 'guard duty'. I think this alone is a lot more than what we'll get from selling off naming rights and from selling more ad space on our streets, subways and in our parks under the new policy proposals. We can even fundraise in the community. The fantastic Museum station redesign was partly paid for by partnering w i t h t h e To r o n t o C o m m u n i t y Foundation. Selling out our public spaces is the sale of naming rights on its property. However, Councillor Janet Davis raised concerns about a clause that says proposals “may” come back to the commission for approval. Councilors Davis (Beaches-East York) and Augimeri (York Centre) unsuccessfully tried to stop this deal from going through. The new advertising contract increases the number of buses or streetcars that can be “wrapped” in ads from 35 to 50 (out of about 1,800 buses and 245 streetcars) and doubles the number of subway cars to 24 (out of about 700 cars). Station domination — an advertiser covering a station from top to bottom in a 6

negative and makes no financial sense if you look at the big picture. How do you manage funding for your public initiatives? We rely on donations, volunteers, and efficiency and are thankful for all of the support we have. What is the reward for you for spending your time and energy for a public cause? It's personally fulfilling and enjoyable. I think the issues we deal with in public space relate to broader concerns around democracy and community building and I'm happy to do it for its own sake. Finally, what is your message for our readers? Our organization has a stake on the issue and whether majority people agree with us or not I think we can all agree that local communities should have a say in what their parks, streets, community centres, and subway stations are named. This is about our civic identity. This is even about home values, which can be affected by a street name and presumably a nearby park name if it sucks badly. Even our medical associations raise concerns about too much advertising and the effect on children. Meaningful public consultations are necessary to debate all of these issues but our politicians don't seem to want to hear your voice, they just want to sell and do it quickly before you can say no. Make your voice heard and contact your local councillor now. single theme — remains limited to four stations: Finch, Union, Eglinton and St. George, but an unlimited number of bus backs are available for ads, up from 50 now. Adults in the United States and Canada devote an average of 1 hour and 12 minutes per day to eating, yet spend between 2½ and 3 hours per day watching television. The speed at which you eat isn't the only problem. As multi-taskers, you often pair eating with other activities, such as driving or working at your desks. It is rare that you're simply eating when you're eating. If the mind is multitasking, critical signals that regulate

food intake may not be received by the brain, when eating. If the brain does not receive certain messages that occur during eating, such as sensation of taste and satisfaction, it may fail to register the event as "eating". This scenario can lead to the brains continuing to send out additional signals of hunger, increasing the risk of overeating. The other major problem caused by mindless eating is obesity. If the mind is tuned out during mealtime, the digestive process may be 30% to 40% less effective. This can contribute to digestive distress, such as gas, bloating and bowel irregularities. Ginger has been used as a natural remedy for many ailments for centuries. Now, science is catching up and researchers around the world are finding that ginger works wonders in the treatment of everything from cancer to migraines. Here are ten health benefits of this powerful herb. 1. Ovarian Cancer Treatment Ginger may be powerful weapon in the treatment of ovarian cancer. A study conducted at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found that ginger powder induces cell death in all ovarian cancer cells to which it was applied. 2. Mindful eating for better health

A man says to a friend, ''My wife is on a three-week diet.'' ''Oh, yeah? How much has she lost so far?'' ''Two weeks.

So, what is required? My answer is mindful eating. Eating mindfully means eating with awareness. Mindful eating is being present, moment by moment, for each sensation that happens during eating, such as chewing, tasting and swallowing. If you've ever practiced mindfulness in any way, (such as meditation, relaxation or breathing exercises) you are familiar with how easily your minds wander. The same happens when you eat. If your mind is drifting off the experience of eating, gently bring it back to the awareness of that taste, chew, bite or swallow. How to master the art of mindful eating: 1. Start small. Like all new habits, it's best to set realistic expectations. Choose one meal or snack each day and commit to focusing on mindful eating at that time. 2. Stop multitasking at meal times. It's really difficult to focus on eating if you're doing other things. Set aside time for eating without other entertainment. 3. Only eat at the table. Another way to minimize mindless munching is to get into the habit of only eating when you are sitting down and able to give the food your full attention. No more snacking on the run. 4. Appreciate the appearance. Taking the time to notice sets the scene for mindful eating.

5. Focus on each mouthful. Think about the flavor, texture and even the sound of the food in your mouth. Focus on how much you like, or dislike these sensations. 6. Chew. Make sure you chew your food enough around 15-20times per bite so that it is well broken down before you swallow. 7. Use cutlery and put it down between mouthfuls. It's much easier to take smaller portions when using a knife and fork 8. Talk and share. One of the joys of eating is sharing a meal with loved ones. It can be challenging to incorporate mindfulness in a social situation but not impossible. Turn the focus of the conversation onto the meal like sharing the experience in terms of flavors and textures, likes and dislikes. 9. Go for quality not quantity. By choosing smaller amounts of the best food you can afford, you will not only enjoy it more, you're far more likely to be satisfied without having to over eat. 10. Make time to prepare your own meals, preferably from fresh ingredients. The cooking process can be as relaxing and enjoyable as eating if you let it. Think also about the places and people associated with the food to be

Here are selected portions and main points from Banks' reports on housing (real estate) trends and forecast in Canada. CIBC CIBC Economist, Benjamin Tal recently released an interesting report examining the possibility of a housing bubble in Canada. Some quotes from the report. "So is it a bubble? Glancing at popular metrics such as the price-toincome ratio or the price-to-rent ratio, it is tempting to conclude that the housing market is already in clear bubble territory and a huge crash is inevitable. Tempting, but probably wrong. When it comes to the Canadian real estate market at this stage of the cycle, any statement based on average numbers can be hugely misleading. The truth is buried in the details—and there the picture is still not pretty, but much less alarming " "Take Vancouver out of the picture and this rate slows to 5.6%. Exclude both Vancouver and Toronto and the price increase is only 3.7% " "Zooming in on the high profile Vancouver market, we see that the gap between average and median prices is approaching an all-time high—indicating a highly skewed

They never ask you to remit the money through proper banking channel, but request you to send money through Western Union or Money Gram. In some cases, as per news report, they have withdrawn from the bank accounts of internet users after receiving latter's bank account details. It is needless to say that all these types of e-mail messages are fake, false and fraudulent. If you're planning to stay in a hotel sometime soon, keep an ear out for fishy phone calls in the early morning. The Better Business Bureau issued a nationwide alert due to an increase in hotel phishing scams involving credit cards. According to reports from several victims from a hotel in Dallas, someone called their hotel room late at night or early in the morning posing as a front desk employee. They'd say that the computer system in the hotel had crashed or glitched, and they needed credit card and personal information in order to charge for their room. The victims, often half-asleep and groggy, gave the credit card info without knowing what was going on. Sveta-ketu goes to school


ong ago in India, there was a boy named Sveta-ketu (shway-takay-too). He was already twelve years old, but he had not yet gone to school. Probably he had no brothers or sisters and there was so much work for him to do at home, helping his parents, that there had been no way for him to go to the house of a learned teacher, which is where the pupils studied in those days. A boy had to live with the teacher and study with him the various branches of knowledge that were taught at that time. The father of this boy said to him one day, "Sveta-ketu, go to school. You are a brahmin, of a wellborn family, and no one in our family line has failed to live up to that. A brahmin must be educated and learn how to behave nobly in every respect."

So Sveta-ketu went off to the local teacher's house and studied the great books, called The Vedas, and similar subjects, for twelve years. In that time, of course, he had been able to master many things, so he had quite a good opinion of himself. He walked proudly and smiled very little. When, at the age of twenty four, he had come back to his parents, they were very happy to have him home again. But his father noticed the proud attitude in the boy and decided that there was only one word for Svetaketu: conceited! One day he said, "Well, my boy, since you consider yourself a very serious person and well educated indeed, let me now test your knowledge. Did you ever ask your teacher for that instruction by which one hears the unhearable, perceives the unperceivable, and knows the unknowable?"

"Dad, everyone is looking for happiness. But what is meant by happiness?" This was one of the questions a wise boy in India, Svetaketu, put to his father many centuries ago.

Some people said there was Nonbeing and nothing else, and that Being came out of that. But they were foolish! How could Being be produced by NonBeing?"

"I want to understand it, Dad," said Sveta-ketu. my boy, all these creatures, though they have entered that Being, they cannot say what they are. When they return again to the waking state, whatever they are in this world -- a man, a tiger, a wolf, a boar, a worm, a fly, or a mosquito -- that is what they become again. They do not know that they have come back from that Being." "Suppose there is a hidden treasure of gold lying buried in a field. People who do not know about it will walk again and again over that treasure and will not find it. Just so, all of us go, day after day, into the embrace of that divine Being but do not realize it. The Self of this whole universe is the same as the Seed from which it came. And you, O Sveta-ketu, are That!"

"But, sir," asked the son, "that Being has no name or form. So, how could this universe, with all its objects having all these names, come out of that?"

"Why, in this way, my boy: by knowing the nature of one lump of clay, we can know the nature of everything made of clay, can we not? Now Sveta-ketu was puzzled and had a doubt in his mind: if some principle, called Being is the cause of all this world, why do we not see that? So, he asked his father, who replied: "Here is a lump of salt. Put this lump in a vessel of water, and I will see you again in the morning." His son did so. Next morning, when he came, his father asked him to bring him that lump of salt. Sveta-ketu looked into the vessel, but of course the salt had dissolved. "Taste some water from the surface of the vessel," said his father, "and tell me how it is." "Salty," Sveta-ketu said. "Now taste a little from the other side and tell me how that is." "Salty, Sir." "Now carefully pour off most of the water and try a little from the bottom of the pot." This done, Sveta-ketu replied that it tasted salty too. "You could not perceive the salt with your eyes, you had to apply the sense of taste. So, also, in this body of ours -- that Being is not perceived by eyes or tongue or any of the senses, but it is here nevertheless. It has to be discovered by a different means." Indian Market view Market declined after a continuous rally on the first day of the month on profit booking. However, the first full week of the month ended positive as foreign institutional investors, who have been waiting in the sidelines so far this year, seem to be coming back to Indian markets. During the second week of the month, market declined on growing fears about the spreading of the euro-zone debt crisis to large European economies such as Italy and Spain. Impasse over debt ceiling in the US and back-to-back warnings by Moody's and S&P on US debt also weighed on the sentiment. Market for the third week closed positive on good monsoon reports and easing food inflation. Upbeat earnings by some companies lifted sentiment and Greece bail out news by European Union improved risk appetite for equities. Nifty declined 0.24% during the month to 5633.95 and Sensex declined 0.66% to 18722.30 to till date 22.7.2011 Meanwhile, the reports have not been encouraging from the weather department. The pickup in the annual monsoon rains has improved crop prospects. Rainfall between July 14 and July 20 was 7% above the long-term average. So far, 12% of the country has had below-average rainfall, while 88% had normal or excess showers. Food inflation eased on the back of cheaper vegetables, pulses, potatoes. Annual inflation in the Food Articles group declined to 7.58% in the week ended 9 July 2011, from 8.31% in the previous week European Central Bank raised

As the crucial corporate earnings season gathers steam, investors will closely watch the quarter results to be declared by companies. Indian firms are witnessing cost pressures amid rising interest rates, staff costs and a hike in transportation costs. The near-term economic growth

may remain decent to high due to commissioning of projects. As per reports, capital expenditure projects worth a whopping Rs 8 lakh crore are expected to be completed in the year ending March 2012. Many of these projects have rolled over from the previous year. Investors will continue to watch the progress of the monsoon rains. Once you set it up, any contact you add to your phone, or any meeting you add to your calendar on your phone is automatically saved and available on the web. Even if you lose your phone, all your contacts and the notes you put about them are still available in your Google contacts/gmail account. When you get a new phone, you don't have to manually fill in all your contact information again. Just sync with your google account, and all of it gets to your phone. Most modern phones can do this (BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile etc.) We can talk a lot more about these services, and how they help your business. But that will take many more pages.
