We Asked, You Answered 6 SARAH SCHULMAN (’04) has been creating sculpture installations from remnants and scraps she has found in unlikely places for the past several years. Much of her work is inspired by the Jewish value of bal tashhit (not to destroy or waste), a concept she says she learned at Schechter. “In sixth grade we went on the teva (nature) retreat and were taught about taking care of our planet and not being wasteful,” the New York City-based artist recalls. “This is a sentiment I carry into my art today.” A 2017 fine arts graduate from Parsons School of Design, Schulman credits Schechter’s veteran art teacher, Barbara Ackerman, for helping nurture her love CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
