Dear Schechter Families and Friends, There is good reason why Schechter has emerged as an anchor of the Bergen County Jewish community, as well as surrounding Rockland and Hudson counties and New York City. Our school is a leader in incorporating 21st century skills and technology in a distinctly Jewish environment that cultivates tolerance and respect, and inspires passion and joy in helping others. Our students question, analyze, problem-solve, think, and communicate in two languages surrounded by teachers who nurture, mentor, and cheer their students on long after graduation.

The educational experience at Schechter helps prepare students for the world they will inherit, and for a future yet to be imagined. The Popkin Innovation Lab has the tools and materials to inspire our children to deconstruct, explore, design, create, test, and retool. Our Middle School International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum sparks our students’ curiosity and an interest in the world around them and the differences they can make as they grow and learn, empowering them to become future leaders and change-makers.

To be clear, our school is more vital than ever. Dear Families, Friends, and Supporters, What an exciting time to be a member of our Schechter community!

This school year, we have welcomed to our Kehillah (community) a new head of school, seven new teachers, and 78 new students from 63 families, including 40 brand-new families.

We have new leaders on our board of trustees and in AHAVA. And of course, I write to you as your new board president. There are so many wonderful and inspiring things happening at our school right now, driven by our talented students, our committed faculty and staff, and thankfully, you—our devoted Schechter families.

Just recently, I had the privilege of experiencing our Fourth-Grade students serve as confident, gracious hosts to our Third Graders in the Popkin Innovation Lab. There, they showcased their engagement in design thinking, coding, and circuitry to convert low-tech games they created using recycled materials into an electronic arcade for the Third Graders to test and enjoy. It was actually thrilling—not only to watch our students bring Schechter’s STEAM curriculum to life—but to watch our Fourth Graders act with poise and maturity as their grade-wide Kehillah hosted their younger school mates.

What is even more unique about the Schechter experience is that we ALL benefit from our evolving and inclusive Kehillah. Through the lens of our Jewish values and traditions, and underpinned by Schechter’s four pillars—World-Class Academics, Joyful Judaism, a Strong Moral Compass, and a Warm Inclusive Community—we continue on this journey together, always learning and growing, and supporting and caring for each other. It is this combination of innovation, tradition, and community that makes Schechter so outstanding, and what will truly bring us to even greater heights this year and for many years to come.

World-class Academics

T

he new Popkin Innovation Lab was abuzz with activity and energy throughout the year as students in third through eighth grade worked on creative, STEAM-based investigations and projects. Third Graders collaborated with Dr. Cynthia Phillips, Founder and CEO of The Disruptive Factory, as ambassadors for a new animated cartoon series called “Verti.” The class worked on building Empathy Bots, learning to integrate the technical aspects of robotics with the fundamental concepts of empathy and how it can be developed and applied to make their own communities better.

As part of our Experts, Eyewitness and Role Models program, BrainPop Founder and Schechter Grandparent Dr. Avraham Kadar and Maya Kovalsky, Chief Culture Officer and Schechter Parent, shared with our Middle School students, the inspiration behind BrainPop, a highly successful animated educational site for home-bound learners. Dr. Kadar discussed his use of the design cycle to refine his product, and the trials and challenges that he overcame before successfully bringing his product to the market.

As part of their study of World War II and its aftermath in Individuals & Societies class, students learned about the founding of the United Nations. After completing a unit of study on Modern War, in which they explored how 20th-century wars transformed daily life in countries around the world, Eighth Graders observed real-world international diplomacy while visiting the United Nations headquarters and Israeli Consulate in Manhattan. They learned how the United Nations addresses issues such as disarmament, peace and security, human rights, and how they can support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Schechter’s new emergent curriculum in our early childhood program inspired our Pre-K students to develop their interest in maps into a full unit of exploration of the structure of neighborhoods, communities, and what makes a community function. Students collected boxes and then transformed them into houses, fire stations, a hospital, and a local library—including fire trucks, bedrooms, and even a return book slot for the library! They studied roads, street layouts, and car safety and used their new knowledge about letters to make signs and draw books, as well as using their grossmotor skills to lay all the tape and carefully maneuver around the boxes.

As our students engage in this type of play, they also learn to work together, and to demonstrate empathy and patience for their classmates— key skills for the future. Our Early Childhood classrooms were reimagined to further challenge young students to engage in integrated and child-directed play. Students also use open-ended, natural materials and incorporate them into other areas of play and investigation, encouraging them to construct meaning and knowledge rather than just acquiring it.

Throughout the year, students performed “Random Acts of Kindness” throughout our school. Our Kindergarten Tziporim students brought smiles to unsuspecting faculty members as they delivered freshly baked cookies. In Middle School, Sixth-Grader Abby Nanus organized a day during which students acknowledged acts of kindness between students by placing hand-written sticky notes on the school’s Kindness Wall.

L

ed by music educators, Irit Ferents and Carey White, Schechter continued to enrich its music program, giving students another way to express themselves through the arts and to connect with each other and the greater community. The Schechter Choir performed for some 400 guests at the 45th Annual Community Celebration, for more than 500 attendees at the Fair Lawn Jewish Center for the Yom HaShoah Commemoration, for the Yom Ha’atzmaut Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey flag-raising ceremony in Jersey City, and in school for their peers. In addition to the Schechter Choir, Fifth- to Eighth- Grade students created their own bands, and more students are increasingly challenged to engage in musical activities, both in and out of the classroom.

Schechter students were able to continue to build relationships with their friends, learn teamwork, and develop greater confidence through our expanding sports program. The positive results were clear: Our Eighth-Grade boys’ basketball team reached division finals, our boys’ soccer team ended its season 7-1, earning a playoff seed, and the Schechter’s girls soccer team capped off its regular season undefeated with an 8-0 record. Go Schechter Sharks!

Our Middle School students’ first day of school stretched well beyond the bounds of the traditional classroom experience. They arrived to discover they were to be immersed in “Wild Robot Day,” an IB-driven program of hands-on activities involving all subject areas surrounding their summer reading of The Wild Robot. Activities included students holding an interdisciplinary debate in a “mash-up” of their Judaic and Individual & Societies classes. Using biblical texts, they debated whether robots could be Jewish and presented their findings in a Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) framework.

They built and tested scribble bots (little robots that operate from a vibrating motor to color on their own) in design and science classes, investigating which variables affected the robots’ scribble output.

T

hrough the IB Community Service Unit, Eighth-Grade students use a reflective process to “explore their rights and responsibility to implement service in action in the community.” This empowered them to embrace and demonstrate their Jewish values of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and Hesed (acts of loving kindness). Projects included petitioning a local municipal government to install neighborhood sidewalks, performing for area seniors, creating programs to reduce students’ stress levels, and connecting to G-d through yoga and meditation working with Yeshivat Maharat rabbinical student Yael Smooha.

As they prepared for their FourthGrade Social Action Art Fair, students focused on issues they were passionate about—ranging from extra recess to saving the oceans to gun control. In small groups, they wrote persuasive paragraphs and created “company” logos, PSAs (Public Service Announcements), and websites.

They learned how artists use their art to send a message, and then chose an artist whose style or work inspired them, and using that style, created an original piece of art to share their own message.

Third Graders learn about children’s rights throughout the world as part of a brand-new social studies curriculum. Students broke into groups, and researched and explored the concepts of citizenship, community, and culture through an inquiry-based project, becoming “experts” on areas of children’s rights, such as the right to education, protection, development, and freedom.

Schechter alumni and current students helped pack and deliver food to needy Jewish families in Bergen County for Tomchei Shabbos.

Middle School students confidently presented their methods of exploration, stretching their skills by applying the principles of chemistry, physics, engineering, and construction to their respective innovations for our Annual Science Fair. With our dynamic new Popkin Innovation Lab, students have the space—and the tools—to help them dream, envision, prototype, test, evaluate, and try again. As students presented their results, they reflected (a cornerstone of our IB framework) on what they would do differently the next time to make their ideas work better. Most inspiring was that they did so with a goal of helping make a difference for others, for our planet, and for our world—a core Jewish value. Among our students’ forward-thinking innovations: an edible water bottle designed and built to help eliminate the use of plastic bottles, and identifying natural sources to create food dyes to determine efficacy over artificial ones.

W

ith the generosity of the Florence z”l and Herbert Ravitz Foundation, we were able to create new technology-based Hebrew learning hubs in our Firstthrough Fourth-Grade classrooms.

Our teaching of the Hebrew language stretches beyond the typical textbook learning to purposefully foster a joyful, deep, and authentic connection between our students and the language of our Jewish homeland. Our program integrates technology, music, games, leveled readers and visual aids, turning Hebrew into a living language they will delight in using throughout their culminating journey to Israel.

Celebrating Hagim throughout the year helps create a deeper connection to our Kehillah. This year, our Hanukkah celebrations included a Lower School “Pajamukkah” in which our students showed their Ruah (spirit) through song and dance. Our Middle School students participated in their annual Hanukkah Latke Fry-Off, competing for the title of “Top Chef” of latke-making. In the same week, our families participated in our first AHAVA-sponsored Hanukkah Havurah, when families gathered at Schechter homes throughout the community to light candles together.

Integrating the study of math, design, and the Mishkan through project-based learning, our Middle School students worked collaboratively in their Humash and Navi classes. There, students applied their text study skills to help determine what was needed in order to build a replica of the main parts of the Mishkan section by section, including: the Aron (ark); the box in which the ark was housed; the enclosure, and the garments the priests wore while performing their holy duties.

Fifth-GradeTorah guest readers— an exciting part of the Fifth-Grade curriculum at Schechter is the opportunity for each student to chant from a Sefer Torah at least once during the school year. At this stage of their Schechter journey, students participate in Tefillah in a dedicated space outside their classrooms, just like the Middle School. In class, students learn basic trope phrases and enthusiastically practice what they learn. Individual students are then given an Aliyah from a weekday Torah portion and then chant in front of their peers during morning Tefillah. Students work with Morah Martha Resnick during recess or other break times in addition to their practice time at home. Family members are invited to join in the Fifth-Grade Tefillah to hear their children read from a Sefer Torah for the very first time. It is a very exciting morning for the students as well as parents, grandparents, and siblings.
