Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour

Mosquitoes as big as your head… We made it through the 4th with flying colors. There was a threat of rain for our big fireworks show but the weather held and the show was spectacular. Thank you Charles Butt for generously financing this event for another year. During the fireworks show, I pedaled around the neighborhood for a while on my three-wheeler long enough to snap a selfie but made it home before the grand finale. It was especially…well… grand this year and seemed to go on for quite a long while, but that might have been because of the three terrorized dogs buried in my lap in fear. I live near the park and those big rockets were going off right over my house. It was like the sky was on fire, blistering with explosions. It was loud and bold and rowdy as hell. And beautiful. And it was such a treat to all except for my poor mutts who were nervous wrecks by the time it was over. As the

on Saturday Bart Crow played. I knew he was a big name on the circuit and had many fans, but honestly, I couldn’t tell you what he looked like or what his hit songs were. In fact, I got to the Porch earlier that afternoon while they were doing their sound check, and didn’t realize they had Bart’s road manager checking his mic and guitar. Apparently Mr. Crow doesn’t do his own sound checks and stays in the bus until it’s time to perform. I thought the road manager was Bart Crow and was totally confused as to who the guy on stage with the man bun was. But he is very good. His sound is warm and clean and his songs have some clever hooks. I can see why he’s so popular. I even saw our police Chief Scott Buroughs enjoying the show. I want to also mention a young musician I saw last week on the Fourth of July at Giggity’s, John Amundsen. John is a local fellow who went to Port A High School and whose parents, Chris and Lisa, own and operate a lovely restaurant, Lisabellas, in Cinnamon Shore. Chris always told me his son was musically talented and I’m glad I got a chance to finally hear him. John appears to have embraced blues and electric blues at that. He also throws in a healthy dose of classic rock. He was mainly playing old Chicago guitar masters like Magic Sam and Guitar Slim. And he had a surprising read on his vocal deliveries that gave him depth beyond his young years. He more than held his own with fast and clean guitar licks. John has some wood shedding to do but he’ll be OK. He’s on the right track. I hope he doesn’t get a man bun.

DO NOT MISS LIST He’s a going Jesse…

Fire in the sky weekend developed, the rains did finally come and the beaches were a sloppy mess. And the mosquitoes are as big as my head right now and there are so many, they darken the sky. I got a lesson in water tables from Edwin the other day when I was whining about all the puddles that won’t seem to dry up. You can’t make it outside without serious mosquito repellent right now. And I’ve nearly gone through all the “Port A Perfume” that I squirreled away when the postHarvey supply depot was cranking. I think the word here is “seething”. This island is seething right now. It’s hot and wet and seething with critters. And the vegetation has gone crazy. If you can’t grow a plant on this island right now, I’d hang up my gardener’s hat. To say conditions are fertile is putting it lightly. And, the last thing I heard the weatherman say tonight was “there’s more heat on the way and a new hurricane in the Atlantic.” Never a dull moment…

Scattered shots…

Bart Crow played the Back Porch on Saturday The Back Porch wins the prize. They are consistently putting out the strongest calendars and drawing the biggest crowds on the island, so far this summer. Last weekend they hit a couple of homeruns with The Dirty River Boys and Larry Joe Taylor and knocked it out of the park again this weekend with Read Southall and Bart Crow. The lines were out the door for all of these shows. Manager Lee Harper is all

Read Southall played the BackPorch on Friday.

That’s Back Porch manager Lee Harper in back of that long line to get in. He’s the one with a big smile smiles these days and for good reason as long as his booker, Becky Hyden, keeps putting out calendars like this. This weekend they have a guy that Becky was really excited about and who she had been trying to book for a long time and finally did, John David Kent and the Marfa Lights on Friday and on Saturday the never slowing down, world tripping, mult-tasking, mega talented artist/musician/songwriter/ playwrite/actor/director/producer/guitarist/ performer/recording artist and long board surfer known as Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX). Throw political activist in there, too. More on Jesse in a minute, I want to talk about the two artists I saw at the Porch this weekend, neither of which I had ever seen, Read Southall and Bart Crow. I only knew that Southall was a hot rising star on the Americana/Country circuit. He played Larry Joe’s recent festival in Stephenville and there’s a buzz about him. Read has a dry stage presence and hardly spoke between songs, only occasionally introducing the next song or telling us he was from Oklahoma. His music wasn’t country. It was rock… and pretty hard rock at that. It was a pretty cold stage. He sounded like Steve Earle during the heroin induced years when it was all bluesy and slurry with big dynamic rock chords and hard luck stories. There was a lot of attitude on that stage. And

Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX) is on fire. He never stops and everything he touches is creative and either you’re entertained or you’ve learn something. Jesse is a very smart guy. I’ve watched Jesse for many years. I used to bounce his son on my knee and now he’s grown. Mr. Dayton has developed into a world class artists in every sense of the word. His credentials are impressive. He has shared stages, recorded with or played guitar with legends: Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Waylon

Jennings, Ray Price, Glen Campbell and on and on. He frequently tours with John Doe and X. He made horror movies with Rob Zombie! He’s a long board guy from Beaumont just like Floyd Moore… enough said. Doug Sahm loved him. I love him. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW on Saturday night. I guarantee he’s gonna play some George Jones.

Chris Jordan’s 50th… And on Sunday it’s our very own resident bass player and construction boss, Chris Jordan’s 50th birthday and we’re throwing down at Shorty’s with his band Selfie and many friends I’m sure. Chris is a true island darling and this proves Who dresses this guy. to be another epic Chris Jordan turns 50 party on the porch and is throwing down at at Shorty’s. This Shorty’s on Sunday. porch at Shorty’s is somewhere that Chris Jordan has been making music on for many decades. Anybody remember High in the Saddle? Come out and tell him you’re glad he’s still sucking air. ♫♪♫ And, that’s the truth ♫♪♫
