10 Ways to

Save the Planet

You don’t have to be a superhero to save the planet and nor do you need to have any kind of super power either! All you need to do is to follow The Manuals guidelines on how to be a little resourceful when it comes to conserving whatever is left of our planet Earth.

MAL(E) FUNCTION Step #1: It’s time to turn it off Always make it a point to turn off the lights before you leave any room. You will end up saving a lot of energy by doing so. Remember to purchase eco-friendly light bulbs from local stores to brighten up your room instead of the normal bulbs that are usually available. In case you don’t like the color of your light bulb, try using them in your washrooms, closets and other rooms where the light won’t bother you much. Step #2: Make your printer eco-friendly Set your printer’s default settings in such a way that it prints on both the sides of the page. When you’re done, don’t forget to recycle them. You may end up saving more than half a million trees a week that way! Step #3: Brush with the water tap closed People still leave water running while they brush their teeth. What they don’t know is that by stopping it they may end up conserving approximately 6 gallons of water a day. Now that’s a lot of water!

Step #8: Become ‘e’co-friendly E-ticketing, e-booking, e-business, e-procurement, e-sales, etc are present in today’s world for a reason. Start by paying your bills and booking for tickets online. In fact, the cost of a paper ticket is much more that cost booking for an e-ticket online. By doing so, you’ll end up saving more than 20 million trees every single year. So remember, use less paper, save more trees and save planet Earth! Step #9: Car Wash Try giving your car to a professional car wash centre rather than doing it yourself. People may end up saving nearly 9 billion gallons of water by doing so. Step #10: Spread the word Awareness has to be spread throughout the world. So start by taking whatever you’ve learnt and passing it on to others. If everyone takes a small step towards being eco-friendly, the collective output could be extraordinary!

Step #4: Reduce shower time You can save up to 13 gallons of water by only reducing 3 minutes of your shower time every day. Head to the washroom with your loved one and take a quick shower. By doing so, you’ll end up being eco-friendly and umm get the added ‘benefits’ while you’re at it as well. Step #5: Sow a seed Engaging in recreational activities with your family doesn’t have to be limited to picnics or movies. Sowing seeds and planting trees can be lots of fun as well! It provides you with shade and shelter. It replenishes the air and land. For those who are into real estate, plants and trees can also improve the value of one’s property. Step #6: Cruise control If you have paid for the extra options in your car, it’s about time you started putting them to use. By using cruise control you can end up getting better mileage. This can be an added advantage not only for the environment but to your finances as well.

w? o n k u o y Did Glass takes a million years to decompose. By recycling it, you can reduce air pollution by approximately 21 percent and water pollution by 55 percent!

Step #7: Paper bags

ww

w.t h

Plastic bags are not biodegradable and they pollute the environment by making their way into the ocean. Start using inexpensive paper bags which are reusable and recyclable as well.

Dummies Guide To Pregnancy

: Taking Care of a Pregnant Wife

WORDS BY DRAVASP SHROFF

Having trouble handling your pregnant better half? The Manual has just the right guidelines to make sure your wife is well taken care of, from conception to delivery. It’s a known fact that, while your pregnant spouse spends approximately nine months with a baby growing inside of her, you on the other hand, will be watching everything from the outside not knowing what your wife actually must be going through from within. It’s true that you’ve done your biological contribution to the whole pregnancy process, but still it’s always a wonderful feeling to play a major role when it comes to bringing that miracle into the outside world.

How to Take Care of a Pregnant Wife We men should understand that being pregnant is not an easy task. In fact, it actually brings in a sense of appreciation for all the women in the world after the babies delivery takes place. As baffling and incomprehensible the whole pregnancy process may seem, staying calm and being there for your wife during that period of time is the best thing you could possibly do for her. Today, The Manual will guide you on how to prepare yourself for the new baby and on how to take care of your wife during those nine months of pregnancy.

1 As soon as you get to know of the good news, jump up with joy and make sure you respond properly once you come to know that she’s expecting a baby even if it was something that you had least expected. Your main aim is to keep her calm and composed by constantly reassuring her that you will be there for her no matter what and that you will try your best to do your part by being a great father after the child is born as well.

3 As the saying goes, it’s better to sleep now or never. And to be frank, once the baby is out, sleep will be more like a gift given by The Almighty rather than the baby itself! So sleep all you want and help your pregnant wife get enough sleep as well, because as days pass by it gets more and more uneasy and difficult for her. The baby starts putting in more pressure on her back and her intestines or maybe even start practicing kick-boxing on her uterus (Ouch!) while she sleeps, thereby making it very uncomfortable for her to move around much. You can help your wife ease the pain by massaging her back, relaxing her senses by snuggling with her under warm blankets and sipping a hot cup of steaming tea.

When she gave birth to my child I was the happiest person on Earth. I can describe that feeling in words right now.

4 Stress levels build up a lot during pregnancy so it’s your job to try to reduce that by not burdening your spouse with additional pressure. Help her out with household workload and make sure she gets all the rest that she needs.

2

Above: Mr. Murli

It’s always a good idea to acquire knowledge when it comes to pregnancy. Usage of books, e-books or even documented videos can be of tremendous help for you, as well as for your expecting spouse. It’s obvious that you will be able to empathize and help her out more once you know what she’s going through, both physically and mentally as well. Below: Anup & Abha Mehta

5 Always accompany your wife when it comes to getting her doctor’s check-ups done. Your presence itself will bring in a feeling of comfort for her and you’ll gain from it too, as the whole experience will prepare you for whatever comes in the future. It’s always good to ask your doctor questions and it’s also good to be attentive while you’re at it. It’s a known fact that, due to all the excitement and anxiety that pregnant women go through their memory levels can be a little dim; it’s your job to keep reminding her about the kind of things she’s supposed to and not supposed to do. So even if you’re busy at your workplace or enjoying a night out with friends, always make time for your wife and her doctor’s appointments.

Instead of buying your wife a rose, buy her ice-creams with pickle juice essence as the topping or whatever topping she prefers and tell her that she’s the most beautiful woman in the world. Do not stop telling her how much you love her and that you’ll stand by her no matter what. Pregnancy is the time period when her body starts to transform, comfort her by telling her that she looks gorgeous and that you love her and the baby as well. Below: Abdullah Al Qassab

Oh yes, breathe in and out for approximately one minute and try not to lose your cool during the days her hormones jump off the roof. She may be chirpy and happy today but there’s no guarantee that her mood will stay the same tomorrow as well. Being patient will do wonders, even when she’s about to chew on your head before you even utter a single word or even when she starts crying like a baby about nonsensical issues.

As mentioned earlier, the kick-boxing sessions the baby has with your wife’s intestines and uterus can put an immense pressure and strain, forcing her to make frequent visits to the washroom. By frequent, it means every 20 minutes. Imagine making a run for the washroom that often, horrendous isn’t it? And with a baby kicking and wobbling inside of her, you can say that things just don’t get any easier for that poor wife of yours. So don’t grumble if you need to pull over to an endless stretch of petrol stations for her to take a leak, support her and try being there for her at all times..

That beautiful day still remains crystal clear in my memory. I was in tears that very moment.

Besides being in labor, the second worst part about pregnancy would probably be the morning sickness part of it. Morning sickness happens all day long and it’s basically inclusive of nausea, vomiting sensations, sleepiness and becoming extremely exhausted after doing a particular task. Women may go through this for approximately three to four months, but for a few cases they may even go through this throughout their whole pregnancy. And yes, it’s also your job to help her get through with it all. Supplementary tablets rich in vitamin B6 may help to ease morning sickness for pregnant mothers. Clear soda, biscuits, crackers and hot herbal tea may help in soothing her uneasiness to a certain level as well.

10

It’s absolutely normal to see your pregnant wife burst into tears all of a sudden. Make sure you are there for her when she vents out her feelings. Pregnancy can be a little too much for new mothers to handle. Every single bodily change might end up scaring her at first. Questions such as, is my baby doing fine or will I be a good mother, will constantly keep bothering her as her delivery date approaches. Keep reassuring her and talking out things with her just to clear her mind from that entire mental stress overload. And trust me once the baby is out, she’ll thank you for it! Have any advice on how to be there for your pregnant wife when she really needs you? Your comments and nual.ae a em inputs are always welcome on The Manual. w.t h

It’s a clichéd fact that, most men assume the only places they can possibly meet women is at a pub or probably even a club. What they don’t really know is that there are so many other places where the women population lingers. Surprising isn’t it? Start by looking at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself a few thought provoking questions, such as, why exactly are you looking for a partner? Would it bring a change in your life? Try to answer them genuinely. After that, read on and see what The Manual has to say about how and where to find women, other than booze joint. Photograph: Dravasp Shroff

Place #2: At Any Non-Profitable Event or Party Blood donation, pet adoption, and various other kinds of nonprofitable events usually have evening dinners by the end of it. It’s not at all a bad way of spending money, since it’s all for a good cause and who knows you might end up meeting and getting to know a few people along the way.

If you find somebody pleasing to interact with, don’t stare, you might end up freaking her out as you For those who sweat it out at the might just invite yourself a little bit gym every week, it’s obvious that of trouble. you might end up seeing regular Place #5: At Your Workplace faces while you’re at it. Keep an eye out for any lovely lady around you It’s alright to be a workaholic and who have their eyes on you (if you bird watch at the same time, but know what I mean). And who knows just try to start from scratch first, it might be a good opportunity to that is, from friendship and then you get to know each other, although, can slowly develop it and move on to respect her workout space (women the next level. don’t like it when men hover around them when they are in their sweaty workout state). But come on that Place #6: While En-cashing a does not mean you should shy away check on Your to the Bank from it all, do your male magic and whisk her away from her senses. Ever seen men wander off to a bank and make small talk with the cashier lady? At first, it may seem too creepy Place #4: At a Coffee Joint but trust me sometimes it works like If you want, go clubbing at night, but a charm. De-stressing at your pals place in shorts and a stinky t-shirt would be something that you might do often and dressing up would be like the last thing on your mind for sure. Although, you might want to reconsider your dressing style the next time your friends have their girlfriend’s girl pals over. So yes, dress up well, look good and have a blast! Who knows, things might actually start off pretty well.

HIM & HER nowadays you can meet a lot of single women through the internet. Don’t tell me you haven’t tried that one yet. There are so many online dating sites that connect people and it’s not entirely a waste of time. Who knows, you might even end up making new friends over the internet which could probably even last for a lifetime.

Place #7: While Going Jogging With Your Pet Lucky owners of pets always get a chance to small talk with other pet owners. And especially if that pet owner is a single woman (Bingo!) you can always try asking her out for a cup of tea to talk about, “pet” related issues. But that doesn’t mean you should go pet hunting just to use that as a lady luring tactic. Place #8: The World Wide Web Can Be Such a Boon

Place #9: Up in the Air (Literally) When you are already late for a 3am flight, it’s understandable that your fashion sense may get a little, shabby. But here’s a helpful tip, whenever you are at the airport, try dressing up well, women love that. In fact, they love it so much that they very discretely eye you from a distance, waiting for you to make your first move. And congratulations to you if she makes that move first! Place #10: During Your Prayer Meetings The Manual strictly recommends you not to go to for prayer meetings or places just to pick up ladies, finish up whatever you came for and then look around. A few women go to religious places and pray hoping to meet their Mr. Right. So who knows, you may find your Miss. Right as well. There is definitely no harm in looking now is there? Although, be a little wary while you’re at it, if things don’t work out the way you had expected it to, it might be turn out to be very awkward to see the same face again during prayer meetings.

Furniture stores like IKEA, book stores, shopping outlets are a few other places where you can bump into a few interesting women. Try not to be a little too pushy and creepy. The key is to be yourself and dress to impress. If nothing works out it’s alright, there’s always next time right?

JUMP START YOUR MARRIAGE

4 Steps to Fall in Love with Your Spouse All Over Again

Why date other women when you have the most beautiful wife in the world with you to go on dates with? The Manual sums up a few ways to bring back the romance between you and your spouse all over again. Sometimes after a few years of marriage, you tend to take each other for granted and the whole romance in your relationship starts to fade away. You as a man should make a little effort to try to bring that love back in your marriage life. Once you get married, everything is new and you and your wife just can’t get enough of each other. So why not try to bring back the love by surprising your wife with romantic getaways or with presents but it doesn’t have to be pricey or anything, something small or simple will be good enough.

WORDS BY DRAVASP SHROFF

Step # 2 Step # 1

THE MANUAL Summer Issue 2010 | May

w.t h

Women love gifts. It doesn’t have to be expensive or anything, a bouquet of rose s or a box of chocolates can make her feel special itself. You don’t need a special occasion to buy her gifts or do anything special for her. Its things like these that make her feel like she’s a significant person in your life and gifts don’t have to be physically tangible, in fact, giving her a nice massage after a rough day would be a gift in disguise according to her.

Plan a night out, just you and your wife. Keep the kids away and occupied by bringing in a babysitter during the weekend. Although, if you have a meeting, try to reschedule it for another day because wife-time should be wife time and family-time should solely be family time. Going out on a date doesn’t have to be very fancy or anything, a quite night out on a beach or going for a movie together would be special enough to keep both of you happy. The main point is to spend quality time with each other right?

ww

Keep reassuring her that she is the only woman in your life and that will bring in a different sense of comfort and security from within. And when she’s all decked up, tell her how beautiful she looks, she’s obviously not psychic to read your mind now is she? Another trick that works like a charm is to leave love notes on the fridge, and also try asking her out on a date over the phone like how teenagers do these days, she might end up blushing and giggling like a girl by the end of everything.

Step # 3

Step # 4

sp If y w ar ou an rite k u ha d in p y ve ed y o m uc ou ur or at r v af e t e ie te ip us w r- s . s t ma on o Th rria ho e ge w M l to an ife ua , l

Start by being more expressive when it comes to showing your love. An easy way to do that is by saying, “Darling, I Love You” or even by complimenting her by saying, “You look stunning today”. It’s true that by working long hours in the office and providing for all kinds of family necessities, you are proving your love each and every day, but still by expressing your love in words can actually do wonders for you.

Be polite with and around your wife. Being a gentleman will make your relationship stronger. Try helping her out in household chores and try not to be grumpy and bored when you go out with her for shopping. Make breakfast for her in bed during the weekend and give her a peck on the cheek before leaving for her. Such things will definitely make her feel extremely special.

ASK MYLO

Mylo: It is understandable that men tend to be very sensitive about their beard at some point of time. But what you have to understand is that, not all men are capable of having a fully grown beard. There is nothing one can do to make the empty patches grow thicker. Go to your barber and ask his or her opinion on what goatee or chin strip suits you best. Being creative won’t do you any harm at all. My eyebrows are very thick and it almost looks like I have a mono brow. It’s something I am very embarrassed and concerned about. Please help! Mylo: Thick eyebrows can look good when one knows how to carry it off well, although, most men these days shy away from sporting bushy eyebrows. You can start by going to your stylist or barber and ask their opinion on what he or she thinks about them. The barber should be able to trim the excess hair and groom your eyebrows in such a way that it still has a natural look. If trimming isn’t good enough, try threading the extra hair off, which is a natural alternative. My fingernails are brittle. Is there anything I can do to make them stronger? Mylo: Load up your fridge with some eggs, legumes and anything which is rich in biotin. Drink one glass of milk everyday with a gelatin based capsule which helps in regenerating stronger and healthy fingernails. Also try to follow a strict balanced diet to maintain healthy skin, eyes, hair, liver, and mouth, in addition to strong muscle tone and smooth brain function. I find it hard to maintain a good skin texture. Could you recommend something to make my skin look more pampered?

20

Mylo: To rejuvenate your skin there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Start by stocking up on food which is rich in antioxidants, such as, vitamins C, vitamin E, and protein rich food. Avoid drinking soft drinks, switch to herbal green tea instead. Have a healthy meal consisting of green vegetables and fruits to bring in that inner glow on your face. Although, do not overdo it by over-eating as everything in moderation is good enough. Guzzle up eight or more glasses of water every day. This makes our complexion look less firm and more radiant. Drink alcoholic and caffeinated drinks in moderation as it affects the body in many different ways. It causes dehydration, disrupts sleep, increases stress and it can also cause broken capillaries. I currently live in a studio apartment with limited amount of space. What kind of bed would you as an expert recommend to best suit the place? Mylo: The best place to go bed hunting would be IKEA. There are a variety of sofa-cumbeds which would suit your apartment. Search for the ones that have a large storage spaces below as well. You can extend it while going to bed and fold it up according to your convenience. I usually have a very dead and sleepy look on my face like I have just gotten over a bad hangover. Is there any way I can look fresh no matter how much sleep I’ve caught up on? Mylo: Hydrate your body by drinking plenty of water. It replenishes your system completely. Add in a tablespoon of lemon and honey based on your preference. This helps in reducing the appearance of dry, dull and wrinkled skin texture. Are you having any personal queries that you are too embarrassed to discuss about with anybody? Don’t fret, just type out your questions and ‘Ask Mylo’ for answers!

Ever since I have hit puberty, I’ve noticed that I have empty patches on my cheek. As much as I like the disheveled look, I still want to do something about the empty hair spots. Is there anything I can do about it?

FOOD JUNKIE’S MANUAL

Swipe out the passé “dinner dates are usually supposed to be at fancy restaurants” phase and move into a more sensible approach to how to woo your date without even having to step out of your house. Here’s the thing, women appreciate men who cook. No idea how, but it just builds this certain (wow) impression of you in their mind that you wouldn’t want to miss out on. Restaurants tend to get a little distracting for a few couples. Probably spending quality time at home and preparing a lovely candle light dinner for your date would give both of you an opportunity to get to know each other even better. The Manual recommends you to follow these mandates for a romantic at-home dinner date.

8 Mandates of the At-Home Dinner Date

Mandate #3: Don’t make messy food. Which means no slippery pasta, no hard shelled crab or anything that is difficult to chew on, as things tend to get a little bit awkward then. Mandate #4: Quench her thirst. After all that feasting, give her something that she would like to drink. It may be a cocktail that you’ve just made or anything that’s refreshing for that matter. Although, keep in mind what her preferences would be as well. Mandate #5: Do not chew like a cow. It’s understandable that you are at home and

Mandate #6: Go out for dessert. Just because you’ve made dinner does not mean you should go overboard by making dessert as well. Take your date out for some ice cream or a slice of your preferred pastry. Come on now, who can ever refuse a dessert invite right? Mandate #7: Be yourself by keeping things simple. One doesn’t need to light the place up with candles or do complex things to impress a woman. Being yourself would be a good option and try keeping things simple, it would make her feel more comfortable. Mandate #8: Inhale and exhale. Relax and try not getting too tensed. It’s a date so it’s supposed to be fun right? Just take a deep breath and trust me after all that effort from your side, she’ll definitely be amazed!

For those who haven’t found any good cooking recipies yet, follow these delicious meal recipies and The Manual guarantees that you will have a flawless at-home dinner date every time.

w.t h

Mandate #2: Be prepared. Don’t try preparing complicated dishes. Try to keep the complexity to the minimal and keep all the ingredients ready before beginning. You can probably give her the effortless task where she can make the salad while you put your chef hat on and start with the cooking.

you tend to forget your table manners sometimes but seriously, do anything but chew with your mouth open. Keep your napkin on your lap instead of tucking it in your shirt. Women like men who have good table manners, so if you do, she will definitely be impressed.

ww

Mandate #1: Dinner at home for your first date is a complete no-no. Women find it unusual and creepy when men invite them over to their house on their first date itself. So it’s your job to keep it safe and leave the whole idea of ‘dinner-dates at home’ only after your fourth or fifth date with her. While taking her out on dates try paying extra attention to whatever she prefers to eat or drink. It would definitely aid you in deciding what kind of menu to have lined up for your future date with her at your place.

Cave Man’s Guide to Shaving Words By Dravasp Shroff

28

Tool #1 Traditional Safety Razor Tool #2 Good Quality Blades Tool #3 Shaving Brush Tool #4 Shaving Cream & Foam Photograph: Dravasp Shroff

Now the fine art of shaving in one’s own house is slowly deteriorating and it’s being mostly practiced at the barber shops. Men barely have the time to sit for hours together in the washroom trying to get their shave right. Their quickest option would be to run to the nearest barber shop and let them work their magic. Why stress it right? The Manual, on the other hand, has been painstakingly trying to bring that beneficial ritual back into your daily routine by teaching you how to handle a razor like your ancestors did. Most ponder on the reasons as to why their ancestors used to opt for a standardized classic wet shave. First of all, its cost efficient as the traditional shaving foams and creams give out a proper lather as compared to the latest chemical based shaving gels.Hence you end up saving more in the long-run. The traditional shaving foams constitute majorly of natural organic materials which have lesser harmful impact on one’s skin texture due to frequent usage. Keep in mind that, the chemically packed goop used nowadays, tend to dry up your skin making it seem very parched and dull. It’s funny when you see a few men, walking in

the streets not knowing that they’ve gotten horrible shaves done. By using a safety classic razor you will get more consistency in terms of having a good shave, while the amount of razor burns and in growing hair also reduces considerably. The electronic razor blades used nowadays tend to chew up your skin layers leaving it sensitive and irritable. Engaging in the manly ritual of shaving will make you realize what style suits you best and with practice perfection will start sinking in. It’s obvious that you can only practice with your shaving gear. The Manual recommends all

THE MANUAL Summer Issue 2010 | May

its readers to have the following essentials to be able to shave like a pro. Starting with, Traditional Safety Razor Moving from an inexpensive non-reusable razor to a sharp edged safety razor is like a major upgrade. It’s strong, powerful and long lasting as compared to the cheap plastic made razors that are available in most local stores these days. But it’s not like safety razors are hard to find either. Ask your grandfather for example, chances are that he will have one. If not, try

procuring it over eBay or from any good brands because it’s worth it! Good Quality Blades It’s always good to experiment, especially when it comes to choosing from a variety of unique shaving blades. But stop experimenting till you find the ones that is more suitable for you. Shaving Brush Dabbing shaving cream directly on our face before a shave seems so much easier than using a brush to do so. But speaking out of experience, if you have never used one during

shaving, you’re definitely in for an extravagant treat. A shaving brush creates a rich lather and it helps in creating a very smooth cut, which also depends on what kind of brush is being used. The badger bristles holds more water and it gives a better shaving experience as compared to boar bristles as it lather more. If you want a cheaper brush then, opting for a boar bristle shaving brush would be a good option. Shaving Cream & Foam Instead of procuring different kinds of blue/ green chemical based shaving gels from the market, it’s better to settle for the traditional organic based shaving creams that don’t have any harmful impact on your skin. In fact, they

leave your skin nourished, refreshed and smelling manly and all you’ll need is only a drop of it on your brush. True, it may be a little high priced but its worth every dime spent on purchasing it. We’ve had enough theory classes for the day, so now grab your shaving gear and let’s get practical! Soften your beard with a hot towel or take a hot shower to hydrate yourself. After that, decide what kind of shave you would like to do and prep your beard accordingly. By softening your whiskers, your shaving experience becomes easier and less irritating. The next step is to soak your shaving brush in water and put a small drop of cream. Then swirl it till it forms a thick lather and apply it on your

face in circular motions. Once your face is covered up in creamy lather, take a few strokes to smoothen everything evenly. If you have used disposable razor blades your entire life, shifting to safety razors can be a huge task. The art of shaving comes only with time and experience, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to get the perfect shave in just one try. Just remember to use very little pressure while you handle a traditional safety razor as it is sufficiently heavy enough to cut your beard with precision. Also try to angle the razor blade as far away as possible (approximately 27 to 47 degrees) from your face or you will end up hacking up your face. If you think you need practice, try using the safety razor on your

arm till you are confident enough to work on your face. After you are done with your shave, splash cold water all over your face or rub your face with ice cubes to close your pores. To reduce any kind of irritation caused after your shave, dab your face with a good aftershave to leave your skin looking fresh and healthy.

Have any idea on how to reduce razor burns and skin irritations caused due to shaving? Send in your comments and inputs to The Manual to help all our readers get educated on how to be a professional when it comes to shaving.

Words By Dravasp Shroff The first place every individual gets into after getting up from bed and before going to bed is the washroom. The state in which a man’s bathroom is, that is, how disorganized or organized it is or if it consists of minimalistic products or if it’s accumulated with unwanted things, speaks a thousand words on how his approach to life really is. Even so, men usually ignore their bathrooms and begin their day with a bad and haphazard start. A man’s bathroom shows a bundle of emotions that one has towards life and especially in our monotonous lives we tend to neglect ourselves from a few seconds of care. Something which every man must know is that it’s highly vital to have a bathroom which is well-equipped and stocked. Although, statistics have shown that some men assume that spending extra time on their body-hygiene and appearance, are qualities considered more appropriate for the opposite sex rather than by the male population. But the real secret is that, by overlooking these aspects one will only lead an unhealthy lifestyle. The Manual is not asking you to start spending ages in the washroom painstakingly trying to style each and every hair strand on your head or even advice you to start plucking your eyebrows one-by-one. All we are trying to say is that there is a fine line between neglect and obsession and the midpoint is where we men should usually aim at.

30

THE MANUAL Summer Issue 2010 | May

Just a few minutes in the bathroom does it all as the main thing is to have the right kind of products and know how to use them. Keeping that in mind, The Manual brings in a list of essentials in each and every man’s bathroom. Almost a billion men pick up their razor blades to shave every morning. What used to be known as ‘formen-only’ ritual has now been passed down through centuries and has become a monotonous practice filled with low-priced razorblades, bad-quality shaving cream, extremely painful razor burns, and of course, a bundle of annoyance as well! So to begin with, every man should have a wet shaving set in their washroom; if not, at least a electric razor set would do the trick. The wet shaving set basically should consist of a good quality razor, a good brush, and some glycerin-based shaving cream or foam. For the razor, a classic one with a straight blade edge would do. As for the brush, a fine edged badgerhair brush will certainly give you the finest shave ever. When it comes to using the most suitable shaving cream or foam for your skin, it’s always a good idea to procure a high-quality one with a thicker consistency to do the job. True, when procuring a shaving set consisting of all the above constituents, it can get a little too pricey, but it’s worth it as shaving is something most of us do every single day. So why not try to make the monotonous manly ritual a little more pleasurable?

completely. Your bathroom needs to have high-quality wax, hair defining mousse, or even a good styling mix. It can be the best way to sculpt those short locks and make sure you look more like a professional than a nutty professor. While buying the right kind of hair products, it is always a good option to keep it simple. Hair products salesmen may try to convince you to buy a million products but that doesn’t mean you have to. Ask your barber, your friends from work or try something new for a change! Just make sure it isn’t too pricey or even too cheap while buying hair products. For shorter hair, hair wax would be great without covering up your entire hair with that product. On the other hand, for longer hair a good hair mousse can be a good option. These products are not just to crowd up your bathroom sink; in fact a few good quality products can make a huge impact on an individual’s appearance. So wake up and make a difference by making your bathroom a place where you can unwind, after all it is your sanctuary of manhood. Are we missing out on anything? Now is your chance to post in your comments to The Manual with the kind of essentials which you think are a necessity in every man’s bathroom. w.t h

The second most vital necessity in a male bathroom is, Cologne. You can’t really rely on cologne to hide your poor grooming lifestyle, as it isn’t what it was made for, nevertheless, it’s what makes a man, smell like a man! While using cologne, remember to dab only a small amount on your pulse points, that is, your wrist, behind your ears and the collar bone. It’s a known fact that such points produce a lot of heat and thus help in triggering the smell of the cologne without actually using much of it at all. While procuring cologne it’s always a good option to settle for a good-quality one rather than an inexpensive one. Another big no-no would be to NEVER dab cologne over your clothes. No brushing routine would be complete without the use of a good mouthwash and of course, a tongue scraper. You can be tall, dark, handsome, or even prince charming for that matter, but with that foul smelling breath of yours, all bets are off. Bad breath is basically caused due to the bacteria in ones mouth feeding on various kinds of proteins. Brushing ones teeth alone won’t solve it all, mouthwash, flossing and using tongue scrapers can do wonders when it comes to maintaining a proper oral hygiene. Obsessed about keeping your hair well-maintained? Well, The Manual is too! Let’ throw away the old bottle of goopy gel hair products and start using quality hair products that your hair has been yearning for. It’s true that hair styling shouldn’t take hours for a man every morning, but that doesn’t mean he should disregard it

You don’t have to be embarrassed about not knowing how to jump-start your car when the battery is down; there are so many men who don’t in fact. But that doesn’t stop you from learning now, does it? Here are a few simple instructions on how to bring your car battery back to life and how not to electrocute yourself while you’re at it. Okay well, you can’t really get electrocuted as the voltage is too low, but you might end up getting a big jolt when the current makes its way through your skin. Sometimes you may end up in a dilemma before jumpstarting your car, as in, you may know how to jump start a car but there are chances of you getting the wrong cables in the wrong battery terminals. By chance, you put the key in the ignition and while turning it nothing happens, you’re most likely to have a dead battery and jump starting it would probably be a good option.

The jumper cable which has a red end is called as the positive port. You must connect that end to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Step #2

Step #5

Step #6 Now the fun part begins, start the engine of the car that’s helping you jump-start yours and let it run for approximately 5 solid minutes. Step #7 After a period of time, withdraw the cables in a backward fashion. Step #8 Don’t turn off your car just yet; let it run for at least thirty to forty minutes to give the battery enough time to recharge. And now your car is good to go. Try keeping the colors in mind, that is, red and black. Red depicts the blood that runs through your body which is a positive aspect and the black color depicts darkness or death which can be a negative thing. Try relating these aspects in your mind before connecting the cables to any of the terminals. It actually helps, trust me!

Any idea how to jumpstart a standard transmission car? If yes, share your comments with us at The Manual.

So here’s a list of car musthaves that can sometimes even end up helping yours or anybody else’s life. Having a mobile phone charger and an extra fully charged mobile phone in the glove compartment of your car can be of great help when you really need it. When your battery dies (and this time I’m talking about the car battery, not the mobile phone battery) in the middle of the road, your only rescue would be the jumper cables that have been lying in your car for ages, and thereby help in bringing your car back to life. And who knows, you might even end up helping a lovely dame who’s stranded in the middle of the road someday. Yes, let there be light! Although, in this case a torchlight to be more precise. Don’t ever forget to keep one or even two of them if possible, in the car. They can be very handy at night time while changing a flat tire or for seeing anything in the dark for that matter. At night it can get very unsafe to park the car to the side of the road. Usually cars come with a reflective hazard alerting triangle, if yours didn’t, purchasing one should come first on your shopping list. It basically makes sure that you are visible for all passer-bys when visibility is pretty low, like at night. To be on the safer side, put together you own first aid box. It comes in very handy at times of emergency. Bust out a tow strap when your vehicle gets stuck in the sand or when the car just stops running even after jump starting it so many times. All you need to do is to just tie or attach one side of the tow strap to the car in front of you and the other end to your car so that you can tow your car easily wherever you want to go. Usually while driving over huge sand dunes or holes, the vehicle might end up getting stuck, this is where a shovel can be of some use. If it doesn’t fit in your vehicle, try getting a smaller one or probably the foldable car shovel itself.

Dry food supply and bottles filled with water can be a major life saver most of the time. You wouldn’t want to be stranded in the middle of the road, in the scorching heat dreaming of the bottle of water you left by the kitchen sink that morning now, would you?

Write to us at The Manual and give us your inputs on what a your car should have.

CHANGE A FLAT TIRE IN 9 EASY STEPS

40

THE MANUAL Summer Issue 2010 | May

Are you having trouble changing a flat tire? Well, The Manual has got just the right solution for you in about nine simple steps. To many, the noise of one’s tire burst may inflict a sense of annoyance or even cause dejection, but to those who know exactly how to change a punctured tire, the sound of the flat tire flopping against the surface of the road may add in a distinct sense of excitement. Every man who knows how to drive a vehicle must know two basic things. Firstly, how to change a punctured tire and secondly, how to jump start a vehicle when the battery is down. These two things will save you from a lot of trouble when you are probably in the middle of nowhere with not even a single soul to help you get out of there and it may even come in handy to help a damsel in distress stranded on the road.

2

THROTTLE MAN

3

Step #One

Step #Seven

First make sure that your vehicle is parked on an even or flat surface. In case, your tire gets punctured while driving on the road make sure you try your best to move away from the heavy traffic and put on your hazard lights, so as to be on the safer side. Find a rock and place it on the tire opposite to the punctured tire, as in, if your front left tire is flat then place a rock on the rear right tire. And don’t forget to put the triangular reflector which usually comes with the vehicle as a precautionary method.

Grab onto your spare tire and slide the wheel on. Then take the lug nuts of the vehicle, fit them into the holes and tighten them firmly.

Step #Two

Step #Eight Once you are done with that don’t forget to lower the vehicle down by lowering the jack till the wheel is firmly placed on the surface. Step #Nine The last step is to tighten the lug nuts to make sure that it does not fall off while driving.

Next step is to remove the hubcap which is over the tire so that it is easier to get to the lug nuts. Step #Three This step needs a lot of strength as you will have to loosen the nuts, but remember don’t take any of them off yet, just start by grabbing onto your lug wrench and place it on the punctured tire’s lug nuts and turn it anticlockwise. Step #Four Most cars usually come with a jack, but if yours doesn’t just remember to place it underneath your vehicle approximately 21cm away from the tire or to be more precise about the correct placement of the jack make sure you check the vehicle’s manual. Raise the jack and make sure it’s placed on a solid spot.

4

To change a punctured tire all you’ll need is a jack, lug wrench and of course, a spare tire.

Step #Five Continue cranking the jack till the wheel is high enough to be removed easily. Step #Six

The Trick: Throw away your flat sheet and sleep with only a soft quilt or duvet. When you wake up, give your duvet a casual toss and leaving a generous wrap at the foot of the bed. Use your pillows to fill in any headspace. It is essential to buy an extra pair of bedding to avoid washing and waiting and avoid large and thick mattress pads. 1. Dim your lights. Avoid large night lamps. It is recommended to use the smallest bedside lamp you can find. They require less space and consume less energy. 2. It’s time to replace the ringer. Most men want to be respected at their workplace and some aim at working very hard. But getting appreciated and respected for their work is not always attainable. You can still find a few people in organizations who work extremely hard every day but still gets walked all over by his co-employees or by the management itself. To earn respect from superiors and colleagues one has to become highly diplomatic and has to be able to grasp the art of handling politics. If he doesn’t, then recognition and respect will never be within reach. Basically, respect is granted for only those people who are valued. Without it, one’s life away from work becomes negatively impacted by his work. Most of us have seen both the sides of the coin, that is, the good and the bad. The Manual will aid you in amplifying the good side and making it a reality! As men grow older, they tend to get more obsessed with their careers. One thing to remember is that, jobs are like relationships. Why? That’s because the more you tighten your grip, the more likely you are at losing it forever. You need to start creating your own identity as your employer has to begin valuing your presence and acknowledge the fact that you are working with them because it’s your choice. And no matter how well you work at your work place, if you’re frequently working late or on the weekends, your employer will definitely take advantage of that.

1

How To EARN RESPECT AT YOUR WORKPLACE 2

MAL(E) FUNCTION

It can be atrocious, but you can’t just walk around terrified about the world and how people treat you. You should be able to accept the fact that people are there who will take you for a ride and this might even affect your quality of work. You shouldn’t care less about what other people think, although that does not mean you should be completely reclusive, but just try to loosen your grip. It’s not the end of the world. So continue putting in effort while doing your job and don’t get intimidated by your co-workers or higher management.

The number one rule is to never ever miss your cut-off-date. Ever! The term deadline is given for a particular reason. In an organization, excuses are not accepted like how they were in high school. You are accountable for whatever you do. And before a deadline is given, try to firmly state your reasons as to why you will not be able to reach that target and offer an alternative instead. But be very respectful while doing so.

The second most important rule is to be punctual. Always! Punctuality shows that you value time and that is a good attribute that most men should have. It creates a very good first impression as well. Always put yourself in the other person’s shoes before arriving late for a meeting. It’s highly disrespectful in most parts of the world.

MAL(E) FUNCTION

The third rule is to avoid frequent tittle-tattle. Gossiping is something most people do. It’s the inner urge to communicate your views regarding other people. And it can create a lot of controversies. So it’s best to leave unnecessary tittle-tattle at home before going to work. Never ever think of gossiping via email, the reason being someday or the other the news will spread like wildfire. Gossiping is the quickest way for you to lose respect, especially within and organization. Time may be precious to you, but allot time for your superiors to waste yours. Try not wasting yours and other employee’s time. Be diplomatic and tactful when it comes to spending time with your superiors. If your boss is a kind of individual who prefers to sit and chatter about his family history other than work related issues, try squeezing in some time to listen to him ramble. Consider it as an investment. But that doesn’t mean you should start getting overtly free with your boss. Never ever do that. Try playing your cards right by keeping safe distance as at the end of the day he/ she is your boss. Treat everybody with respect. It does not matter what post you or the other person holds, just treat everybody with respect. Remember to treat people the way you would like to be treated. Appreciate people for the work they do irrespective of the fact how good or bad they are. How is it going to hurt you anyway? In fact, such things will actually make a business run efficiently. What if someday one of your lower subordinate ends up getting promoted to a post above yours? That is when how you treat people will matter. If you have treated them well, they will be happy to support you instead of using that opportunity to seek revenge. Dress well to impress. That does not mean by dressing up once your job is done. No. Try putting in a little effort to dress up every single day. That means you should blend with the crowd and you don’t really have to stand out completely as sometimes it tends to breed hatred. There are a few organizations where employees dress up in casuals. It’s your job to assemble a proper wardrobe for your work what does not sway away from the business-like casual theme. And the days you have meetings, make sure that you dress to impress!

MAL(E) FUNCTION

Balance your word flow, especially when you are in a group. Honesty is a good virtue no doubt. But when you are in a group, think twice before giving your inputs. Know what to say, and how to say it based on the situation you are in. But that doesn’t mean you should lie because sometimes you may end up causing real damage to the project. Before uttering anything, ask yourself if there will be any adverse effect caused due to your honesty. But if your superior asks for your opinion regarding a specific issue, even if you are in a group consisting of people who know they are not going to like your input, give it anyway. But be diplomatic enough to talk to them politely after the meeting regarding the issue, just to clear the air. Clutter at home, not at work. Your desk doesn’t have to be squeaky clean, but it should be at least a little organized. In an organization, people judge you by your actions, even by how organized you are. So try to throw away the chocolate wrappers that have been lying on your table for over a week and start organizing already! Load up on caffeine at work, not alcohol! When it’s the time to celebrate, do so. But when it comes to your workplace, try to maintain a level of decorum. You wouldn’t want to get warning letters just for getting a little tipsy at work now would you? Definitely not! But if someone else comes in to work drunk, don’t make a big deal out of it and try to call him or her a cab no matter how much you dislike him or her.

This means that you have to stay away and protect yourselves from these guys by securing your computer by following the steps as suggested by The Manual which cannot protect you fully to these attacks but can actually reduce the risks of such attacks taking place.

Are you scared that someone may steal your records, access your database and steal your identity or financial records? According to Webopedia, a hacker is a term used to refer to individuals who gain unauthorized access to computer systems for the purpose of stealing and corrupting data. It is a skill which can be used for good and evil alike. Some hackers are employed by companies, governments and institutes to secure the spread of information on the Internet and are used to find and fix the faults in the system networks and servers of various kinds. They are called as Ethical Hackers or White Hat Hackers. Now the opposite cousin, the Black Hat Hackers have a dark side to their way of stealing information and cause major security issues.

The Manual presents to you the well kept secrets for years.

Keep yourself updated to the latest Operating Systems developed by well established companies including your Internet Browser as it acts like a Gateway Terminal between hackers, viruses and spyware and your computer. Avoid high-risk websites and be sure not to click on any links on such webpages. To ensure more security switch on Pop-Up Blocker in your Browser. Passwords must be changed regularly in every 72 days. Do Ensure that the password contains a mixture of numbers and special characters jumbled together. Do not use spouse’s or child’s name, as such passwords are easy to guess. Choose security questions that are equally hard to guess. But don’t forget in return. Do not ever make the mistake of sharing your password with anyone, no matter how close they are to you. Also, do not write down your password anywhere. Don’t use the same password in all the accounts that you create on the web.

Hack-Proof Yourself

Be sure to Install and Enable Firewall, Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus Program which is updated regularly and which secures your computer well.

The Manual recommends an anti-virus scan on attachments even from a known sender, just to be on the safer side. Do not click on advertisements that appear to be true. They install a program which executes itself later in the future automatically by which you voluntarily hand over the control to the hacker. It’s more like opening up a safe for the robber.

Quick Tip: Secure Facebook http://www.facebook.com is an unsecure session which loads faster but is more prone to getting hacked as the security is minimal. Change your URL address from http://www.facebook.com to https://www.facebook.com/

Go to Account. Account Settings. Account Security. Click Change Check Box for Secure Browsing Save.

A strict NO-NO to ‘phishing e-mails’ that ask you to reveal your passwords.

Avoid opening any e-mail attachments from unknown senders. Remember, hackers don’t come dressed up in a red clown suit.

ABDULLAH AL QASSAB Q. There has been a huge transformation in trends over the past few years among the youth. Do you particularly remember any kind of fads in terms of hairstyles, clothes, etc. from your childhood? In the good old days, navy crew cut and another one called as number 7 was famous. But now guys like to have longer hair! Q. Do you have passion for automobiles? What kind of car do you drive? I don’t really have a passion for automobiles. I love my modified jeep wrangler. It suites my personality. Q. If you were granted with one superhero power, what would it be and why? Reading other peoples minds like Xavier in X-Men. That will be like controlling all. Q. Since you have been a part of so many endeavors, have there been any such moments where you have been mentioned in a newspaper? I’ve lost count actually. I have been mentioned in newspapers ever since high school. Even my family and friends tell me that they’ve seen me on the news. As in TV, as i was a host on a youth TV show in Sharjah and on Amrita TV. I have also been on a radio show. Q. Hearty congratulations to you and your wife regarding her pregnancy. Do you have any kind of worries as a soon-to-befather though? I’m often referred to as a big child now I am a would-be father! I’m worried I may end up playing hide and seek with my baby than help him do his homework.

Q. As an environmental activist, if you were given a chance to bring in one change to the world today that would make it better place, what would it be? Enforce solar energy system all around the world. We’ve we got solar power so let’s USE it. Q. Has there been anybody who has had a great impact on your life? If yes, who and how has that brought in changes in you? My mother as I’ve learnt how to survive and how to have faith. A few school teachers have played a major role as well, like, Mr Taheen, Mahmood Hamada, Juma, Esaam Abdulla, Khalid Asad, Marwan Ibraheem, Jamal Sa’ad. The Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Nueimi who i call The Green Sheikh has transformed me into a falcon that flies for UAE. Q. If there was one thing you would want to alter about yourself, what would it be? My short temper as it scares people away! Q. As an Emirati, could you tell our readers what middle-eastern food is like? Its tasty, healthy and simple . It suits the extreme climate we live in. Q. There has to be a driving force that has made you the successful person that you are today, what is your secret? What has motivated you to be an environmentalist? The Green Sheikh has made me what I am today. The Government thrives in making services such as water and electricity abundant for every consumer. Although, consumers take advantage and that leads to high pollution and in the end the victim is UAE itself. Q. What world events had the greatest impact on you while you were growing up? Did any of them personally affect you or your family? The National Day celebrations just prove how much love we have. The Gulf war and family attention to its aftermath has just made us pay more attention to crisis around the world now. Q. How’s the world now different from what it was like during your childhood? It’s the same. You see the rich and the poor. Food is there but never distributed right. One side you Africa, where people die from hunger and on other side you see tomato festivals in Europe where only wastage is seen. As I said, every year only names change and faces change events but the crisis are the same.

I’ve mentioned this on Channel One. Our mothers are friends and my mother fell in love with my wife at first sight before i could. We met and it was a mutual agreement. Dates are frowned upon in our culture and I agree . Think of it in this way, if you were to come to your father and say that you have found your soul mate, he would possibly agree or disagree in a good way. My mother would say, “Abdullah with your bad grades, time and priority management including all the warnings you’ve gotten from me by not finishing your chores or duties on time, you think you can chose your life partner on your own? Never!”. Q. Are there any such precious memories that you hold close to your heart from your wedding day? Walking towards my wife and focusing on her eyes and seeing her blush. I walked straight to her leaving the world aside to prove it to her that no one mattered but her. After all she’s my Mona Darling! Q. What is your take on, leading a successful married life? Your wife is the axis of your life. Period! Q. . What was your first reaction when you found out that you were going to be a parent? I was like Oh God, no more special nights in a hotel together. Only now we’ll have diapers in our bags 24/7. Q. What was your first choice when it came to choosing your career? If given a chance to pursue something different what would it have been? I wanted to study psychology. My second option was to be a sergeant, last was engineering. After meeting Green Sheikh my whole focus is on being an environmentalist. Q. Of all the values that you have imbibed from your family, which specific attribute do you feel was the most valuable? Your passport! Here being a local matters the most and best element in an Emirati is that they consider family first. Q. What have been your proudest accomplishments? There are many. But one is to be felt that many locals in higher positions have said that they are proud to see an Emirati like me.

Q. Moving to a more personal subject, if you don’t mind me asking that is, when and how did you meet your spouse? And being an Emirati were going on dates allowed or was it frowned upon?

PHOTOGRAPHY ESSENTIALS The digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) is the great step upward for photographers who want to expand their creative horizons — or simply just get better pictures. Whether you want to become a serious photo hobbyist, have a passion to turn into a professional, or just want to take advantage of the improved control that digital SLRs give you over your photography, discovering how to use this tool of the future should be high on your priorities list. One of the common problems that many new digital (and film) photographers have is ‘camera shake’ where images seem blurry – usually because the camera was not held still enough while the shutter was depressed. Tripods are the best way to stop camera shake because they have three sturdy legs that keep things very still – but if you don’t have one then another simple way to enhance the stability of the camera is to hold onto it with two hands as shown in Figure 1. Selectively focusing your camera lens for a chosen part of the subject is a powerful way of drawing attention to it. A manually focused SLR camera allows most scope to actually observe how a particular point of focus makes the whole picture look. With an auto focusing (AF) camera you will probably need your point of focus filling the tinny auto-focus frame line in the center of your viewfinder.

You should keep in mind that there are 5 Basic Camera Controls 1. Focus 2. Aperture 3.Shutter Speed 4. White Balance 5. ISO

First of all, locate the focus control. Most SLR cameras usually have a manual focus lever near the front of the lens housing. Steps to do Manual Focus 1. Zoom in as tight as you can on the subject you wish to focus on. 2. Adjust the focus ring until the picture is sharp. Turn the ring clockwise for closer focus, anti-clockwise for more distant focus. 3. Zoom out to the required framing — the picture should stay nice and sharp. The Aperture (also known as the diaphragm or stop) is a circular hole positioned within or just behind the lens. It is usually adjustable in size like Iris of the eye. When you click the shutter release button of your camera a hole opens up that allows your cameras image sensor to catch a hint of the scene you want to capture. The aperture that you set impacts the size of that hole. The larger the hole the more light that gets in to the lens and the smaller the hole the less light. Aperture is measured in ‘f-stops’. For example f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6,f/8,f/22 etc. Moving from one f-stop to the next doubles or halves the size of the amount of opening in your lens (and the amount of light getting through). Shutter describes a mechanical "door" between the camera lens and the film. When a photo is taken, the door opens for an instant and the film is exposed to the incoming light. The speed at which the shutter opens and closes can be varied — the faster the speed, the shorter the period of time the shutter is open, and the less light falls on the film. Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second. A speed of 1/60 second means that the shutter is open for one

74

THE MANUAL Summer Issue 2010 | May

sixtieth of a second. A speed of 1/500 is faster, and 1/10000 is very fast indeed. White balance (WB) is basically means colour balance. The process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the "color temperature" of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light. Our eyes are very good at judging what is white under different light sources, but digital cameras often have great difficulty with auto white balance (AWB) — and can create unsightly blue, orange, or even green color casts. Understanding digital white balance can help you avoid these color casts, thereby improving your photos under a wider range of lighting conditions. ISO is a common short name for the International Organization for Standardization. Whether you shoot with film or use a digital camera, your choice of ISO has a direct impact on the combination of apertures and shutter speeds you can use. In the photographic world, ISO is most commonly referred to as a film rating system. Think film photography, not the movies In terms of film, ISO is used as a rating system to tell you how sensitive the film is to light, or how fast the film is. The lower the ISO number (ie 50) the more time the film needs to be exposed. The faster the ISO film speed, less light is required to take a picture. ISO is a standard telling you how sensitive your film/digital sensor is to light. • Higher the ISO, the more sensitive the film/sensor is to light. • ISO speed affects allowed aperture and shutter speed combinations. See figure 3.

OUR TAKE Let’s start from the basics by asking you where your family originates from and in which part of the world do you live in now? - I Live in Dubai. To be more specific, I come from an Iraqi [Babylon] background. But other than that, I have been born and brought up in Dubai itself.

“Remember to always matter what. In fact, you in so many different way

How long has it been since you have been a Disc Jockey? - I have been a DJ for about 10 years now. From the time you have started working on your passion, how long did it actually take for you to feel competent enough to play in front of people? - 2 years after I began Disc Jockeying I felt more confident enough to play in front of a crowd. Ever since you began working on electronic music, did you know that you had a future when it came to being a DJ? - What can I say, for me it was like love at first sight! Photograph: Dravasp Shroff

So how have things unfolded for you over the years? And how have you progressed as an artist during that period of time? - Honestly speaking, ever since I’ve developed that passion for music, every day has been an experience for me. Many things inspire me to keep improving. No doubt, it does take a lot of time though! And it’s a very long process to be able to reach that point where you can start handling things!

Many might be amazed that an individual like you, who has undoubtedly been successful in many endeavors— would pursue his career in music. But what exactly got you hooked onto Trance music? - The fact is that I am an artist and as I had mentioned before, I’m in love with Art, Trance music to be more precise. Does your frequent music training give you an added bonus as a performer?

BRAD

- Yes, of course. Always in fact! But is it a necessity, especially after seeing how competitive today’s music industry is? - Being a DJ is my passion. I have never taken aspects like competition too seriously, so I’m no competitor to anyone. I’ve got my own style and uniqueness :)

OUR TAKE

follow your passion no ur passion is your success ys.”

Do you have any DJs in mind that you have always looked up to? - There are many but to name a few, I have always loved the work of, DJ KV, Aly & Fila, Paul Van Dyk, System F (Armin Van Buuren & Ferry Corsten), Tiesto (not the new one of course). Do you have any special memories that are linked to Amsterdam after your trip there? - Amsterdam was MAD! The entire trip was special and it consists of all the biggest memories of my life. I loved it from the bottom of my heart. I was warmly welcomed by everyone there and I was so shocked when I met my own fans there! Do you have any particular artists in mind that you’re dying to work with in the future? - Yes, definitely Aly & Fila. I Love their work.

Above: DJ Brad Ashtar

What has been your biggest challenge? Have you overcome it? If so tell us how.

ASHTAR

- The biggest challenge for me has been on how to save trance and keep it alive. As we are living in a much commercialized music market; we trance artists need to keep the art alive, unfortunately most of trance music is not the same as it has been before. It’s very hard nowadays to find what you exactly want and it’s really sad, its being an unfair story after all. It’s hard to explain all that in here really! Is there any piece of advice that you would like to give to our upcoming DJs? - DJing is not a matter of playing from virtual DJ for god sake! Being a DJ means you are responsible of how you affect your crowd. It’s definitely not a 2 day course! Thank you for providing The Manual with the opportunity to interview you. Would you like to share any final words of wisdom to our readers? - It was definitely my pleasure and yes; “Remember to always follow your passion no matter what. In fact, your passion is your success in so many different ways.”
