Where Australian Roots and West Coast Architecture Meet Omaroo—the Aborigine word for “beautiful view”—and a spectacular home in an elite Nanaimo neighbourhood, positioned for beauty and inextricably connected to the horizon. From the street, a south-facing courtyard swoops at the base of the home, curving around the structure like a swirling tidal pool. Multiple levels of living and planting space create a layered, dynamic foundation in the courtyard, which promises a flexible canvas for lush greenery and stylish design. The 4,650 square foot home was a dream in the making for the homeowners, one of whom is an Australian born lover of clean, crisp architecture and the sunny, natural glow of home. The design called for an industrial, contemporary aesthetic with a comfortable mix of finishes and materials—glass, wood, stainless steel, and stone work bring layers of texture and movement to the space where Australian roots and West Coast contemporary design meet and create something fresh and amazing.

Custom home builder Dogwood Mountain Homes was the perfect choice for bringing the design masterpiece to life. Owners Murray Briggs and Waide Stennes are committed to quality and originality, paying exceptional attention to the fine finishing that pulls a design like this together.
from Traditional to CONTEMPORARY
Dogwood Mountain Homes is considered a hands-on company, completing the entire scope of work from excavation to framing and siding, and on to the fine finishing with its skilled team of carpenters. “We have a great eye for detail,” says Briggs. “We are proud of our homes—the guys take pride in their work and it shows.”

“Our mission is to work closely with our clients to ensure all their design ideas come together with ease and expertise,” says Briggs. “We hired a special team of highly talented subcontractors for all the special details of this custom home.”
A hospitable yet functional home design – perfect for coastal living
Every job has its challenges, says Briggs, who sees these as opportunities. “Once we find the solution it all clicks together and we are able to come through for the client with quality workmanship attention to the fine finishes.” Omaroo is positioned with a c-shape footprint that maximizes southern exposure in the protected front courtyard and highlights the north-facing view from almost every room in the house. Exterior stone work and a coastal mountain inspired timber frame at the entrance create an immediate connection between the home and its natural surroundings, while front columns evoke a grand but welcoming entrance. “We blended west coast contemporary and coastal mountain type vernaculars on the exterior and focused on the more contemporary details inside,” says John Larson, designer with CA Design in Qualicum Beach. With this objective came the need for a sense of transparency, facilitated by floor to ceiling windows and a specific orientation influenced largely by the shape, slope, and condition of the lot.
The site topography was a significant challenge. “It was a 90-foot house on a 100-foot lot,” says Murray. “The grade change from the road to the bottom corner was about 50 feet, and we had to build it up seven or eight feet in some areas.” Through the use of retaining walls and a complex excavation, the building now sits on a well-prepared lot with maximum usable space, says Briggs.
The body of the home is wide and narrow, with the rooms arranged around the view rather than stacked in front of one another, says Jeremy Larson, designer with CA Design. “The narrower the building, the less topography we had to deal with. That led to creating the transparency to the core living areas where you can see front to back.”

DISTINCTIVE OUTDOOR FURNITURE
On the outside, board and batten extends up beyond the mid-way stone work to cedar soffits and timber framed lookouts in the gabled roofline—some of the exterior details Dogwood Mountain Homes took meticulous care in perfecting. Inside Omaroo, natural fir timbers come indoors and flourish as modern architectural elements. The view is immediate from the oversized fir front door, which allows abundant natural light through five horizontal clear glass windows and generous sidelights. A custom vertical stainless steel handle is of articulate scale in open space of the foyer and great room.

Because an open, roomy interior with abundant natural light was on the wish list along with a modern yet comfortable aesthetic, the great room opens to the kitchen—a natural progression of colour and materials. The kitchen is the full depth of the house and facilitates flow and transparency with outside access to the front courtyard. A BBQ area on the south facing courtyard welcomes guests through the kitchen, and facilitates an easy movement through the home to pockets for seating or entertaining. A white Caesarstone island takes center stage among dark stained cherry wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances. Materials selected for shine and dimension add subtle gleams of light—porcelain tile on the floors, a tempered glass backsplash, and sparkling cylinder pendants bring excitement and warmth to the contemporary space.

The 17-foot high vaulted ceiling in this space goes beyond retreat-style exposed fir timbers with perlins overlain for an extra dimension. This creates a lighter, layered effect that stays within the context of the interior and brings the room to scale.

The exterior natural stone also comes indoors, pairing with the floating concrete hearth that hangs off horizontally on both sides of the fireplace, at home in the great room surrounded by sandstone. A deep, earth bound palette including exotic tigerwood flooring, custom stained cherry wood millwork, and white and black accents creates crisp lines and keep the view the focal point.
Omaroo means ‘beautiful view’ in Aborigine
A dedicated dining space is positioned off of the kitchen and overlooking the upper patio. The centerpiece in this room is the chandelier—a mathematically designed steel sphere of triangular shapes with LED terminals and transparent lenses intended to spread warm, white light in every direction. There are few light fixtures in the home, and each one makes a statement. This careful selection of unique, artistic light fixtures was a deliberate move on the homeowners’ part to keep the architecture central to the design. The effect of this is most obvious with a lack of fixture in the great room where, at night, beautifully placed pot lighting gently allows the eye to fix on the structural details, rather than being distracted by a fixture. Entry through the garage leads to a dedicated entry way where dark wood cabinets keep the busy family organized. “Opaque glass on the garage doors is a unique feature,” says Murray. “It really brings the light in. The same is true with the transoms throughout.”
The powder room on the main floor features a floating vanity with a raised rectangular sink in white onyx and a chic Kraus fixture.
The homeowners wanted all of the main bedrooms on a single floor for safety, but with enough space
between them for privacy. This led to the development of a galley—a long hallway immensely brightened by extensive floor to ceiling glazing and selectively placed art recesses. The master bedroom is a tranquil, inviting space with an unusual free-standing headboard centrally positioned in front of a full-scale window to ensure a view from the lying position. Floating shelves on either side of the platform bed provide storage and an enveloping appearance. Waking in the morning with the sky and the ocean blending together is like being on top of the world, says the homeowner. In the ensuite, a huge mirror comprises the backsplash, creating depth above the floating, dark wood vanity with double under mounted sinks. The bathtub is spa-like with a marble top and floating waterfall fixture. A wood surround is a warm and grounding detail. The gallery leads to the children’s rooms, each of which is custom designed for form and function. A cut glass race car shaped chandelier is a playful detail in one room, which also features maple furniture to tie in with the rest of the home. The other features a modern twist on a classic bright pink, orange, and green palette, with clean, complementary retro-inspired lines and shapes in the finishes. Both rooms have an adjacent bathroom with stylish, durable finishes

including stainless steel, porcelain, and cherry wood.
A Bocci light fixture made up of a cascading, wire suspended series of glass orbs spills over a fir staircase that leads to the lower level of the home. A full wall of custom built-in millwork connects the two levels and brings the appearance of height to the lower level ceiling. A games room waits at the bottom of the stairs and double doors lead to a stamped concrete patio. The patio is shaded by exquisite beam work, secured by a nail-less mortis and tendon technique, and an outdoor hot tub welcomes weary bodies for a luxurious, spa-like retreat. True to its hospitable yet functional layout, Omaroo’s home office space is to the left, while a guest area, constructed to ensure family visiting from overseas is comfortable and can enjoy the privacy of a self-contained suite, lies to the right. The suite’s deep and natural palette ties in with the rest of the home, and offers a cosy retreat with ample natural light.
