2009 Drake Women’s Soccer Preview

Freshmen Rachael Klein and Kelsey Pigg have the ability to make contributions to the midfield at both ends of the field. Klein netted 39 goals during her prep career at Blue Valley High School in Leawood, Kan., while Pigg garnered elite and first team all-state honors as a senior at Waukee High School in Waukee, Iowa.

Senior Elizabeth Woerle will look to help lead Drake to its second NCAA Tournament berth after earning second team All-MVC accolades last season registering nine goals and three assists.

The 2009 campaign for the Drake women’s soccer team will be one defined by the continuing growth of a young, but talented core of players under the leadership of second-year head coach Lindsey Horner. A challenging schedule tested the Bulldogs early last season before Drake came together and rolled off six consecutive victories en route to an 8-10-1 campaign. Despite the losses of first team All-Missouri Valley Conference defender Katie Sauer and second team All-MVC goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder (95 saves, 1.21 GAA), the cupboard is fully stocked for a stellar campaign with nine letterwinners returning, including senior forward Crystal Townley (seven goals and two assists) and midfielder Elizabeth Woerle (nine goals, three assists), both 2008 second team All-MVC performers. The ability of Drake’s seven seniors to establish the leadership and tone for the campaign from the start of camp to the last game, coupled with the contributions of the Bulldogs’ younger players, will be key to success this season. FORWARDS Headlining the Bulldogs’ attack up front will be the return of all-conference performers in Townley and senior Melissa Lewis (two goals, four assists). For the second consecutive campaign, Townley added seven goals, including a team-high three game-winners, while Lewis made her presence known last fall, registering a pair of goals, en route to sharing top-team honors for assists with four. The Bulldogs welcome back redshirt sophomore Ali Walsh, an MVC All-Freshman team honoree in 2007, who returns to the lineup after missing the entire 2008 season due to injury. Her speed and ability to break down defenses will help Drake create goals. A dynamic target player as a freshman, Danielle Figliola parlayed her athleticism into scoring three goals, while distributing a team-best four assists. The Bulldogs also are expecting solid contributions on the offensive attack from sophomore Amanda Wallace and freshmen Laura Moklestad and Kasey Wellman. A four-time all-conference performer at Des Moines Roosevelt High School, Moklestad recorded 77 career goals, while Wellman tallied 62 goals as a three-time all-league player at Northfield High School in Northfield, Minn. The duo’s scoring ability should help solidify a very dangerous attack up front for Drake. MIDFIELDERS The midfield for the Bulldogs will be comprised of a strong mix of returners, along with a pair of newcomers this fall, led by seniors Elizabeth Woerle, Blair Nelson and Shannon Schuehle. A year ago, only Nelson, Woerle and junior Abi Dodds garnered 10 or more starts but what the Bulldogs lack in terms of starts they more than make up for in terms of playing time. Seven of the eight returners played in 10 or more contests in 2008. An all-conference selection as a junior, Woerle led the offensive attack in 2008, pacing Drake in goals (nine) and shots (65). An honorable mention All-MVC performer a year ago, Nelson had the knack of moving the ball towards the front of the attack, collecting three assists, while registering 23 shots. A strong defensive midfielder, Dodds appeared in 16 games and recorded one assist but an injury will force Dodds to redshirt this fall. Schuehle played in 14 tilts as a junior, while sophomore Lauren Berner provided an impact as a freshman, using her speed to collect a goal and an assist. Sophomores Lauren Wiltshire and Lindsey Johnston each helped create scoring opportunities as freshmen and recording at least one point offensively in the Drake attack.

DEFENDERS The defensive quintet of seniors Karissa Brown and Rachel Gielau, juniors Katie Anderson and Bailey Dorrington, along with sophomore Samantha Knosby, forms the foundation of Drake’s defensive unit this fall. The group combined to make 55 starts last season, led by 16 and 15 from Brown and Knosby, respectively. The ability to be strong individual defenders as well as being able to be organized collectively will be key to this year’s success. The unit also has the ability to provide offense as Brown, Anderson, Dorrington and Knosby each recorded at least one point a year ago. Add into the equation the continued growth of sophomores Angela Chigazola and Melanie Fielder and the Bulldogs’ defensive unit will be interchangeable and experienced. Rounding out the backline for Drake is freshman Natalie Pearson, who was a two-time first team all-state performer at West Des Moines Valley High School and was a member of two Tiger state championship winning squads. GOALKEEPERS The last line of defense for the Bulldogs this season will be a battle as both sophomore Kourtney Arnold and redshirt junior Alyssa Lee are capable of making saves. The loss of second team All-MVC performer Jenny Schroeder will create an opening and one of the two must adapt quickly and step up and assume a key role in anchoring the goalkeeping position. Arnold appeared in four games as a freshman and registered 16 saves, while Lee returns to the Drake roster after a one-year hiatus. As a sophomore in 2007, she pulled in six saves in four appearances. THE SCHEDULE The Bulldogs will again be challenged by a formidable 19-game schedule that includes contests against 2008 NCAA Tournament participants Kansas, South Dakota State and Evansville. The Bulldogs open the season at North Dakota State (Aug. 21), before hosting NCAA tournament qualifier Kansas (Aug. 23). A visit to the Centennial State then beckons Drake as it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete against Colorado College (Aug. 28) and Syracuse (Aug. 30) at the Colorado College Invitational. The Bulldogs are home for a contest against DePaul (Sept. 6) before returning to the road for a three-game swing at NCAA qualifier South Dakota State (Sept. 11), South Dakota (Sept. 13) and Western Illinois (Sept. 17). Drake then hosts in-state rival Iowa State (Sept. 20) before traveling to UMKC (Sept. 24). The Bulldogs kick off their MVC slate at Evansville (Sept. 27) before returning for a three-game homestand against Iowa (Sept. 30), North Dakota (Oct. 4) and Northern Iowa (Oct. 8). The final non-conference game of the season is Oct. 11 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The final four games of the season are MVC showdowns at home against Creighton (Oct. 15) and Indiana State (Oct. 29) and on the road at Missouri State (Oct. 18) and Illinois State (Oct. 25). The Bulldogs are seeking an upper-division finish to earn a bye into the semifinal round of the State Farm MVC Championship, which kicks off with opening round games on Nov. 1. Creighton will host the semifinals and championship match on Nov. 6 and 8, respectively, in Omaha, Neb.

Senior Crystal Townley garned second team All-MVC honors a year ago after recording seven goals and a pair of assists.

Drake women’s soccer players volunteered their time packaging meals to aid hunger relief around the world with Meals from the Heartland.

Drake student-athletes take their responsibility to the Des Moines community very seriously. During the past school year athletes have volunteered with Meals from the Heartland, packaging food items to aid hunger relief around the world, while providing football clinics for youth as well as participating in Toys for Tots. Athletes regularly volunteer to read to children at elementary schools as well as visit patients at hospitals and help with Habitat for Humanity. Drake junior rower Chelsea Smith, sophomore soccer player Ted Schleisman and freshman distance runner Matt Jurysta were named recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award during the past school year. Smith was the main organizer of the Drake Student Athlete Advisory Council first ever student-athlete talent show and canned food drive. The event collected more than 200 canned food items and SAAC won the student organization division award for most donated items in the Drake Live Drive. Jurysta developed “Five Thousand Acts of Green”, organizing a campus effort to commit to 5,000 acts of green by speaking to campus groups, administrators and students. Schleisman helped organize youth soccer clinics, serve as a volunteer for the Des Moines Marathon and help with Meals from the Heartland.

Drake women’s soccer players, shown here with members of the men’s soccer team, participated in a fashion show to help raise funds for Drake’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
