2009 Drake Men’s Soccer Preview
three goals and adding a team-best six assists. Gorczyca was named as a third team NSCAA/adidas All-Midwest Region honoree after recording three goals and two assists. Complimenting that mix will be redshirt sophomore Charles Schwartz and Michael Noonan, along with sophomores Michael Thaden, Thomas Ostrander and Emmanuel Adewole. Redshirt freshmen Colin Lawter and Jordan Stanley, along with true freshmen Michael Rummelhart, David Parato, Mims and Thayne Griffin round out the midfield for the Bulldogs. Schwartz and Noonan sat out last season, while Ostrander and Thaden appeared in 19 and 12 games, respectively, with Ostrander contributing a goal and a pair of assists. Adewole is a transfer from the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio. Rummelhart was tabbed as first team All-State honoree after leading Iowa City Regina High School to a state title as a senior scoring 14 goals, while adding 12 assists. A member of state championship team at Chaminade Prep in St. Louis as a sophomore in 2006 was Parato, while Griffin tied a school record with 16 goals as a senior en route to first team All-Conference and second team All-Region accolades at Hays (Kan.) High School.
Senior Garrett Webb was named a Preseason Third Team All-America honoree by College Soccer News after leading the Bulldogs in scoring as a junior.
Building upon the most successful campaign in school history will be the challenge for the Drake men’s soccer team this fall as the Bulldogs return 10 starters from a squad that posted a school record 13-5-1 record in 2008, en route to advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. In its 23rd season of intercollegiate soccer, Drake will look to its six senior starters in Calvin Clark, Brian Wurst, Julien Edwards, Kevin Shrout, Luke Gorczyca and Garrett Webb, along with redshirt junior Ted Schleisman, to provide leadership to a seasoned mix of returners and six newcomers during a 20-match regular season. “I am pretty enthusiastic about the potential of the team. Thirtyfour of thirty-seven goals scored are returning,” said 12th-year head coach Sean Holmes. “Clearly the issues of our success will rely on leadership and our ability to fuse together as a team.” Senior leadership, depth and experienced players rising to the challenge will be keys to conquering the schedule and competing for a Missouri Valley Conference crown as the Bulldogs enter the campaign nationally ranked at No. 21 in the Preseason College Soccer News Top-30 poll. After cracking the national rankings for 11 consecutive weeks a year ago, Drake’s ranking is the first in a preseason poll in school history. “I’m excited by the ranking, but in the end it is a preseason ranking and there is lots of soccer to be played,” Holmes commented. “It is nice for our kids and I think it will help set the tone in our preseason for what we’re trying to achieve because we hope to go further in the tournament this year and to try to win the Missouri Valley Conference.” FORWARDS Directing the Bulldogs’ attack up front will be one of the most dynamic players in the MVC in senior Garrett Webb (eight goals, six assists), who earned first team All-MVC accolades last season and enters the fall as a Preseason Third Team All-America honoree by College Soccer News. Starting all 19 games, Webb led the Bulldogs in goals (8), assists (6), points (22), shots (42), shots on goal (22) and game-winners (3) en route to collecting first team NSCAA/adidas All-Midwest Region honors. Drake will have plenty of scoring options complimenting Webb in returning starter sophomore Hunter Kennedy, along with juniors Kenan Malicevic and Evan Harrison. The Bulldogs also are looking for contributions from freshman Nick Mims, who is expected to split time between the front and middle lines for Drake. An All-MVC Freshman team selection a year ago, Kennedy tallied five goals and a pair of assists as a rookie and ranked among the MVC leaders in five statistical categories. Elevating his game last season was Malicevic, who broke through with five goals and three assists, while Harrison, playing in a careerbest 13 games, added a goal to Drake’s attack. As a senior last season at Davenport Central High School, Mims recorded 12 goals and 12 assists en route to second team All-State laurels.
MIDFIELDERS The midfield will again be a strong suit for the Bulldogs as seniors Luke Gorczyca and Kevin Shrout, along with junior Matt Kuhn, each earned All-MVC playing honors as a starter a year ago. Shrout, Kuhn and departed senior Ryan Moylan were first team All-MVC performers, while Gorczyca was second team All-MVC. “I think we have the best combination of central players in the league. They attack, they defend, they connect passes, they work tirelessly and their experience of playing so much in their first three years is something to be valued,” said Holmes. The Bulldogs will look to their depth to fill the void left by the graduation of Moylan, who registered three goals and five assists a year ago. Shrout netted four goals and two assists as a junior en route to being tabbed a second team NSCAA/adidas All-Midwest Region team selection. Kuhn started all 19 games for Drake registering
DEFENDERS Seniors Calvin Clark, Julien Edwards and Brian Wurst, along with junior Nick Foster, will again serve as the anchors of the Drake defensive unit. A year ago, Clark, Edwards and Foster earned AllMVC accolades, while Wurst garnered MVC All-Tournament laurels, helping spark the Bulldogs to notch six shutouts. Edwards emerged last season as a dual threat, posting a pair of goals and adding an assist on his way to first team All-MVC honors. A three-year starter, Clark appeared in 17 contests and garnered second team All-MVC honors, while Foster built upon All-MVC Freshman team laurels in 2007 to capture second team All-MVC recognition after starting all 19 games as a sophomore. In his first season at Drake after transferring from Tulsa, Wurst started all 19 games for the Bulldogs, adding a trio of assists. One of the Bulldogs’ inspirational leaders on the field is redshirt junior Ted Schleisman, who appeared in 12 tilts as a redshirt sophomore, including three starts. Add into the equation are the debuts of redshirt freshman Matt Prather and true freshmen Joe Lyons, Parato, and Griffin.
GOALKEEPERS The Bulldogs come into this season with a known commodity in net as redshirt junior Michael Drozd looks to build upon his second team All-MVC selection a year ago, where he helped lead Drake to six shutouts. Starting all 18 games in which he played, he posted a 12-3-1 mark on the strength of 55 saves and a 1.01 goals against average. He didn’t surrender a goal in his first six starts of the season, including a 2-0 victory over No. 24 Loyola. Competing for additional playing time will be redshirt sophomore Jordan Kadlec, redshirt junior Tom Spiess and freshman Rich Gallagher. Kadlec posted eight saves and a 1.11 goals against average in two contests a year ago, collecting his first career victory versus Green Bay. After sitting out last season, Spiess, at 6-4, is the tallest of Drake’s goalkeepers and specializes in penalty situations. Gallagher finished a prep career at Lake Forest (Ill.) Academy with 33 shutouts.
THE SCHEDULE After posting a school-record 13-5-1 mark and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, Drake is gearing up for the 2009 schedule, which includes games against five programs (Indiana, Michigan, UMKC, Northwestern and Creighton) that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs open the season against No. 7 Indiana at the College Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Aug. 27. Drake starts the home portion of its schedule with a challenging three-game slate versus DePaul (Sept. 1), Michigan (Sept. 4) and Marquette (Sept. 6). Michigan advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Bulldogs then take to the road for a seven-game stretch. First up is the UAB Soccer for a Cure Tournament where they will face host UAB (Sept. 11) and Memphis (Sept. 13). The UMKC Invitational follows with contests against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant UMKC (Sept. 18) and Oral Roberts (Sept. 20). Drake follows that with a date at NCAA Tournament qualifier Northwestern (Sept. 25). MVC play opens at Bradley (Oct. 3), followed by the final nonconference game at Western Illinois (Oct. 7). Drake closes with seven MVC games, the first of which is at NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist Creighton (Oct. 14). The Bulldogs are home against Missouri State (Oct. 17) and Eastern Illinois (Oct. 21) before traveling to Evansville (Oct. 23). Bradley comes to town Oct. 28 before the Bulldogs have road games at Missouri State (Oct. 31) and Eastern Illinois (Nov. 4). Drake welcomes defending league champion Creighton for the final regular season game Nov. 7. The Bulldogs will then host the State Farm MVC Championship (Nov. 13-15) at the Cownie Soccer Complex for the first time in program history. The 2009 tournament will feature a four-team championship. The semifinals will be played at 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 13, and the televised championship game on Fox Sports is Nov. 15.

Shrout and Webb Named To Prestigious Hermann Watch List
Drake men’s soccer seniors Garrett Webb and Kevin Shrout were among those named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List, considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer. The Bulldog duo becomes the first Drake players to be named to the list in program history, while placing them among 38 Division I student-athletes that comprise the 2009 Watch List. Drake was one of five schools nationally to place two student-athletes on this prestigious list, joining Monmouth, Tulsa, UCLA and Wake Forest. Only Creighton and Loyola of Maryland had more nominees with three apiece. The recipients of the MAC’s Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Fifteen semifinalists are to be selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. The finalists will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 8, 2010, where the winner will be announced with a presentation banquet following. “I’m really excited for Garrett (Webb) and Kevin (Shrout), it is a tremendous honor for them,” Drake head coach Sean Holmes commented. “It marks another progression and step in the development of our program. To have never had anyone named to the list and now to get two and be in company with some of the top programs in the country is a nice achievement for everyone involved.” 2009 Men’s Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List Andre Akpan (Harvard), Sr., F Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Akron), Jr., MF Ben Arikian (Massachusetts), Jr., MF Rafael Baca (Loyola Marymount), Jr., MF Phil Bannister (Loyola, Md.), Jr., F Chase Barbiere (Monmouth), Jr. MF Mark Blades (Northwestern), Sr., D Corben Bone (Wake Forest), Jr., MF Jovan Bubonja (Illinois-Chicago), Sr., GK Devan Carroll (UNC Wilmington), Sr., F Conor Chinn (San Francisco), Sr., F Byron Dacy (Creighton), Sr., F Jamie Darvill (Loyola, Md.), Sr., F Two-Boys Gumede (UAB), Sr., F Joel Gustafsson (St. John’s), Sr., D Ryan Kinne (Monmouth), Jr., MF Samson Malijani (Fairleigh Dickinson), Sr., F Jimmy Maurer (South Carolina), Jr., GK Ashley McInnes (Tulsa), Jr., F Tennant McVea (Loyola, Md.), Sr., D Kyle Nakazawa (UCLA), Sr., F J.T.
