Summer in London fills us with joy. Open-toe shoes, bright summer dresses, & long, languid evenings in the sun sipping cocktails gives the city a new lease of life. We'll admit it – we're in love! & with so much going on this summer, there's no reason to leave the gorgeous, shimmering city we call home – from the calm of its lush green parks & open spaces to the glam of its new bars & restaurants. We can't wait for some retail therapy at Jigsaw's radical new concept store Duke St. Emporium, sundowners at the Q Grill pop-up on the rooftop of Selfridges, or a much-anticpated dinner reservation at Chiltern Firehouse – just some of the highlights in our exciting summer schedule. & there's plenty to do at D&M, too: from our new Summer Collection of dishes & drinks inspired by the cool, crisp flavours of California to the Great British Summer pop-up at The Refinery that champions homegrown holidaying. Yes, summer reminds us just how very cool London is & we're happy to call it home. So slip on your sunnies, pour yourself something crisp & grab your copy of D&M Edit. Have a great summer. Love, Lisa x PS. Do drop us a line on with your comments, suggestions & snippets of inspiration – lisa.yearwood@drake-morgan.co.uk

the HOT list

The sun is shining & the weather is sweet. & one thing’s for sure: it makes us want to move our dancing feet. From exciting events to what’s hot & what’s not, we’ve got the skinny on what you should be doing this summer. Dig out the sunnies: it’s going to be hot, hot, hot! Great British Summer 17th June to 13th July

Take the inside out this year with our Great British Summer, a glorious celebration of the great outdoors on the terrace at The Refinery. Championing the best of British summertime, the outside space will be bedecked with striped deck chairs, white picket fencing & screens on which to watch summer sport & free movies. What’s more, there’ll be pop-up bars from Pommery, Rekorderlig & Saint to keep you in the manner to which you’ve become accustomed, & a VIP area for private bookings. Perfect for after-work drinks or a day out during the weekend.

FIFA World Cup 12th June to 13th July

Football fever will be sweeping Britain this summer, & we’ve captured our very own slice of Rio with the World Class Beach-Bum World Cup Cocktail (£6.95), a beautiful Brazilian concoction made from Abelha Cachaça, lime juice, agave, red chilli, mint leaves, splash of soda & an ice-cube boulder. Watch the final on 13th July on our al fresco screen at The Refinery.

RISE & FALL Our finger is always firmly on the pulse of what’s hot & what’s not. Here’s our predictions for what’s going up & what’s going down over the coming months. Remember where you heard it first. ON THE UP! Alcoholic Slush Puppies The taste of our childhood – with added kick. Try one of our all-new alcoholic slush puppies for a grownup twist on the frozen favourite: the Seaside Slushy & Cool As A Cactus (both £9.95) will leave you thirsty for more.

2014 Wimbledon Championships 23rd June to 6th July

Sundowners Ain't nothing like a super-strong sundowner to take the edge off a hard day's work. So make it an Aperol Spritz (£6.50) & sip in sunshine-soaked style.

Forget Henman Hill: the best place to watch all the drama of the court is on one of the outdoor screens at The Refinery – cocktail inhand, naturally. Tennis-themed tipples include the Cream Tea Martini (£6.95) – Little Bird Gin, Pimm’s, fresh strawberries, strawberry purée, lemon juice & earl grey syrup served with cucumber sandwiches - & the Robinson’s Refresh (£7.50) – our take on the courtside classic, with Cachaça, blood orange & the renowned cordial – both of which are available at any of our bars & restaurants during the Championships. Alternatively, head to the al fresco space at The Refinery to catch the action & book a party package: Court Your Date (£75) – a bottle of Pommery & a seafood board to share – is sure to take the stress out of any set.

DIY Sisters (& brothers) doing it for themselves has never been more now. Book one of our Masterclasses – from Mixology to Butchery (both £25 per person) – & try your hand at something new. Doughnuts They’re everywhere. We’re serving a mini one with our gorgeous IceCream Parfait (£4.95) with pistachio & raspberry. GOING DOWN! Being Selfish It's always better to share, so do so with one of our super sharing cocktails like the Flowery Gin Mother (£14.95): a floral gin mojito sprinkled with love. Ignoring Your Health Wellbeing has never been more on-trend & our Superfood Salad (£9.45) – quinoa, broccoli, cucumber, feta, mint, parsley, sesame seeds & a lemon & olive oil dressing – comes packed with health benefits at only 550 calories.

London Gay Pride 22nd to 29th June

Holing Up Inside It's summer, for crying out loud. Head outside to wine & dine: gorgeous al fresco terraces can be found at The Refinery, The Parlour & The Fable. Just add fabulous friends.

Fabulousness at the ready! London Gay Pride comes to town but once a year, so make it count by trying our Diva Fever (£6.95) cocktail – a rainbow-bright number made from Pisco, Grenadine, poppy liqueur & lemon - & served on a bed of feathers at any of our bars & restaurants. Sure to be queen of the night.

Haute Cuisine Forget fanciful, fussy dishes that leave you hungry: this summer is all about reviving comfort-food classics like our all-new Chicken in a Basket (£11.75) served with chips & aioli. Yum!

CRAZY STUPID LOVE

Sip & Sup

Here Comes The Sun Cocktails & 'Cue

Here, D&M's trusty team of mixology maestros impart this insider knowledge on what sips to pair with smoke. 1. If you’re working with a soft-flavoured meat such as duck or a light fish, plump for a strong cocktail like a Caipirinha. 2. For steaks & red meat, it’s all about bourbon-based drinks: maybe an Old-Fashioned or a Triple-Crown Julep. 3. Turn ice-cold beer into something more fun like a Lagerita (Avion Reposado, Cointreau, beer, squeeze of lime and salt) or a Michelada (dark beer, Tabasco, Worcestershire Sauce, squeeze of lime, grind of pepper, pinch of celery salt). 4. American spirits couldn't be more now & taste great with smoked foods. Try something like a Sazerac (American Rye Whisky, Peychaud's Bitters, Angostura Bitters, absinthe, lemon peels, sugar cube). 5. Although easy, you can still impress with a good party punch; a giant Aperol bowl stirred with prosecco & charged with seltzer is always going to go down well. The trick is plenty of ice so every sip is crisp & cooling between mouthfuls. 6·

Our Executive Chef Robert Mitchell lights the coals & reveals five fabulous tips for being the host with the most.

1.

An inferno of a BBQ normally burns anything you put on it, so allow the flames to cool & cook from the heat of the white-hot coals. This gives you more control over the cooking.

2.

A trick for cooking sausages on the grill: boil them first so that they are cooked through & then place them on the BBQ. This way you get all the flavour of the grill & they'll be perfectly cooked.

3.

For full flavour, get your meat the day before & marinade overnight in the fridge.

4.

Don’t forget a few well-made salads. I have been to many BBQs where everyone brings meat but nothing to go with it.

5.

This is a showstopper: buy a whole salmon, stuff the belly with lemongrass & herbs, wrap in greaseproof paper & tin foil, then cook for ten minutes on the BBQ. Turn the salmon over & leave for a further seven minutes. Remove from the heat & wrapping. What you’re left with is a whole cooked salmon in its own juices, delicious for a light lunch.

CRAZY STUPID LOVE

BBQ RIBS & HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE

Nothing says summer like long, lazy days in the garden – preferably with something suitably strong in-hand. Try this tasty tipple. If Ryan Gosling were a drink, he’d be this: beautiful to look at & gorgeous to taste. EQUIPMENT Boston shaker Speakeasy coupes INGREDIENTS 50ml Ketel One Vodka 10ml Del Maguey Mezcal 50ml prosecco 25ml agave 25ml lemon juice Cubed ice Half a fresh peach Fresh peach wedge for garnish METHOD 1. In a Boston Shaker, muddle half fresh peach with all the ingredients except the prosecco. 2. Add cubed ice & hard shake before double-straining into a glass. 3. Top with prosecco & present drink in a coupe garnished with an upturned wedge of peach. 4. Cut the skin so that it sticks to the rim of the glass.

When it comes to summer, we want big, flamegrilled flavours from the barbecue. As ever, we've got just the recipe to impress guests.

Forget shrimps & put another rack of ribs on the barbie this summer. INGREDIENTS 4x rack of baby back pork ribs 50g unsalted butter 10g honey 500ml brown sauce 500ml tomato ketchup 50g brown sugar 1tsp chilli powder Pinch of salt METHOD Sauce 1. Place all of the ingredients apart from the pork ribs into a pan & place onto the stove, bring to the boil & allow to simmer for 5 minutes whilst stirring to make sure the sauce doesn’t start to burn. 2. Remove from the heat & set aside

Ribs 1. Season the ribs with salt & pepper. Place them onto a hot BBQ curved sidedown, leaving them for 10 minutes until they are a golden brown colour, then turn the ribs over. 2. Leave this side on the heat for another 8 minutes until the bones can be pulled apart. 3. Turn the ribs over again & leave for a couple more minutes, brushing the sauce over, before turning over again & brushing the other side. Do this several times – the sauce will thicken & become sticky & sweet. 4. Remove the ribs from the heat & serve with a portion of fresh ‘slaw. Perfect to share & tear.

A DAY IN

The Life Of A D&M Girl We asked Milly Kenny-Ryder, the brains (& beauty) behind London lifestyle blog Thoroughly Modern Milly to spend a day drinking & dining at D&M – then regale us with all the decadent details! What happened next is a blur of clinking cocktails, food glorious food & gossip with the girls. I know when I've stepped into a D&M resto… each are different in character, but all have a relaxed vibe with reasonable prices, good food & great cocktails. Honestly, what else does a gal need? With seven stylish spaces dotted around the city, they are great hangouts for city workers after a long day in the office or for glamorous groups of girls gathered to gossip! I, for one, certainly need something suitably strong to take the edge off come 5pm. As a committed Londoner, I am always on the lookout for somewhere swish to hang out with friends, but also to use for writing. They fill my stomach & fuel my imagination. Recently, I had the enviable task of sampling a selection of D&M restaurants & bars in a one-day itinerary. It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. My first stop was The Anthologist, which was a sea of smart black suits on a Thursday lunchtime. Just a high-heeled stroll from Bank, it's beautiful & bright with picture-perfect décor – the large standing area was filled with chattering groups indulging in seriously stylish sips whilst the restaurant was brimming with diners enjoying fabulous food. My friend & I couldn't wait to get started. Like other D&M places, The Anthologist offers a wonderful choice of salads, snacks, sharing boards & mains — & it recently launched its Summer Collection, inspired by the crisp, fresh flavours of California. We went with the Antipasto, comprising a selection of Spanish cured meats like Serrano, chorizo and salchichón. Fresh and healthy, it was absolutely delicious & ideal for picking at while we gossiped. If you visit on a Thursday or Friday evening, The Anthologist has a very secret, tell-only-your-best-friends bar downstairs for those in the know – The Blind Pig is a cosy joint serving up awesome drinks that are just perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif. Entry is strictly limited & it is well worth booking. To drink, try one of the newbies like the On Thyme Martini (Martini Bianco, Hendrick's Gin, Peroni & elderflower cordial with blueberry & thyme bitters) and My Idea Of Fun (Casco Viejo Blanco Tequila, fresh blueberries, plum bitters, tonic, sage & citrus). Zesty & fresh! But there was no rest for the wicked, & after a few hours perusing the Spitalfields shops, I had to bid adieu to my friend & was off to meet another at The Happenstance, a short walk from St Paul's. The new Summer Collection offers a range of Salads for Skinnies, but I was feeling a bit more carnivorous, so went with the rather retro Chicken In A Basket with chips & aioli – a modern take on the classic. My friend, meanwhile, can vouch for the burgers, with quality Scottish beef from Allens of Mayfair & handmade buns from award-winning bakery The Flour Station in Borough Market. She tasted the Blue Cheese Burger, which is a favourite with staff & regulars, but there's also the Lobster & Burger for those who like a bit of surf with their turf. The 'Tatties & Tatas' menu lists six varieties to choose from & I loved the indulgent & tasty rosemary, truffle & Parmesan seasoned ‘Roman Fries’. They're a new foodie fave! Requiring a mouthful of something sweet, we shared a couple of desserts between us: the Lemon Syllabub with homemade shortbread was light & luscious, whilst the Ice-Cream Parfait with pistachio, raspberry & a mini doughnut (very now!) was a cream dream. Feeling rather full, but still craving cocktails, I continued my quest in search of D&M’s finest sips. So calling on the help of another friend (this one, something of a cocktail connoisseur), I headed to The Refinery on Bankside. Creative concoctions aren't top of the agenda for the business crowd here, but I urge the men of Southwark to be a bit more daring because these ones are delish. My favourite was the English Rose, a special, and wonderfully refreshing. The gin mixes beautifully with the soft rhubarb flavour & St Germain elderflower liqueur (my new favourite spirit – it tastes & looks divine). As well as serving cocktails, The Refinery offers one-on-one cocktail classes with a master mixologist from the bar. A long table displayed numerous glass pots & decanters, each containing a different, intriguing liquid or ingredient. In one area stood various fresh juices, another had cordials, pulps & purées, whilst the prettiest area displayed cocktail adornments: purple flowers, edible gold dust & sprigs of fragrant mint. Satisfied & sleepy on the tube home, I reminisced about my D&M experience. These restaurants are a real asset to the city, & it is no surprise that they are full every night; with extensive & diverse menus, inventive cocktail lists, & great attention to detail, they tick every box. Next time, I'll need to check out The Folly, The Parlour and The Fable. Follow Milly @millykr on Twitter & Instagram to read all about her adventures around London & further afield. www.thoroughlymodernmilly.com
