Preface The Annual Report for the academic year 2017-18 is a culmination of achievements both by the faculty, staff members and students. I am happy that the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Hindustan Group of Institutions was concluded with the Valedictory Function on 16 March 2016. There has been a striking improvement and significant increase in all domains of academic activities of Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science during the year. Sports and cultural accomplishments are no exceptional; as students have excelled remarkably in it brining more trophies and laurels to the institution. HITS has obtained several rankings and certifications this year. To mention a few, certified with Grade A Accreditation from NAAC with 3.3 CGPA scale; and placed in Category 2 by MHRD; ranked No. 1 among Best Technical Universities (Private) in India, and No. 2 among Top 5 Private Universities with ‘Best Value for Money’ by India Today; NIRF Rankings 2018 placement of HITS in 101-150 band in the Overall Ranking of Institutions, 100-150 band among Universities, 100-150 band in Engineering and 75-100 band in Management; the first Institution in India to be certified by TUV Rheinland for successfully implementing 5S Work Place Management System. There is a significant development in infrastructure and amenities with construction of state of the art labs, classrooms & seminar halls in Jubilee Block; modernization of labs & establishment of ‘Smart Class Rooms’; installation of yet another state of the art Flight Simulator, ALSIM AL250; establishment of modern conference hall in the School of Aeronautical Engineering; and lay out of football field using natural turf, in association with “Chennaiyin Football Club”, the champions of IFL, to train players, as well as host National & International tournaments. HITS has also launched OFO Cycles for the first time in India to promote eco-friendly travel environment. HITS has signed 13 MoUs with foreign universities during the current year, aiming to scale up our academic excellence and establish partnership with global universities. In the academic arena the students have graduated with flying colours and bagged placements in several multinational companies and organizations across the globe. The staff and students have participated in several exchange programmes. In National/International Competitions, students have won 11 team event awards and 21 individual event awards. The importance extended to co-curricular and extra-curricular along with curricular activities has brought several laurels to the Institute. These efforts of the Institute are bestowed with ‘The Great Patron of Sports and Games Award’ for the Vision, Infrastructure, appropriate process and personnel to promote Sports and Games among the youth in India (FICCI CASCADE). Students have won 19 Winner trophies and 11 Runner trophies in National/State level Intercollegiate Volleyball, Basketball, Football tournaments under Men and Women categories.On the cultural front, Kalaikoodaam, a South Inter Zone Youth Cultural Fest with representations from 31 universities and over 1600 participants; and Yarona 2018 were so popular showcasing the ethos of cultural diversity of India. All accomplishments were possible only with the commitment of our faculty, staff and students alike and due to the able guidance and encouragement from the Management. I hope flipping through the pages of this report would give you a sense of fulfilment and also instill positive vibes to pursue excelling and setting records. Commenced in 1985, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), a deemed to be University, is one of the most sought after institutions in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India offering a wide spectrum of Undergraduate (29), Postgraduate (34), Research and Doctoral Programmes in diverse fields of Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Management, Fashion, Arts and Design, Aviation, and Arts and Sciences. 12th Finance Committee Meeting: • The minutes of the fee fixation committee meeting held on 31st May 2018, circulated to the members was approved. • It was suggested that creating infrastructure to cater to the needs of 10,000 students was discussed and submitted for approval. • The suggestions for improving NIRF rankings within first 100 rankings, achieving a score of 3.5 in NAAC and NBA Accreditation for all eligible programmes were discussed. • The need for effective industry collaborations, research and consultancy was suggested in the minutes. • The suggestions to show research and lab equipment in Capital Expenditure under the head “Research/Lab Equipment” instead of “Revenue Expenditure” was discussed. • The budget presented for 2018-19 have been 12 Page

approved with changes suggested. The revised Budget as per discussion held in 12th Finance Committee meeting will be made by the Finance Controller/Secretary. The details of Scholarships paid during the academic year 2017-18 was discussed. It was suggested that funds to be generated through the Alumni and Industry involvement to meet the infrastructure requirements. Initiatives should be taken by the HoDs and Professors in this regard and we can dedicate the facility created by Alumni/Industry in their names. The Pro-Chancellor requested the DeanAcademics to analyze the strength and weaknesses of the Institution in each category in the last NIRF Rankings and submit a report within a week. Audited financial statement summary for 20172018 was presented before 12th FCM.

Mr. Naidu said, “Educational institutions must compete with global varsities and train students in the best way possible so as to compete in the quest for knowledge and emerge victoriously. colonial mind-set and try rather to be multilingual; yet never forget one’s mother tongue.” Rev Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma shared his reminiscence of Dr. KCG Verghese, who was a pioneer in the field of technical education. He also marvelled about the Founder’s philanthropic touch to reach the underprivileged and make education common to all. In her address, HGI Chairperson Dr. Elizabeth Verghese said the occasion was an opportunity to renew and strengthen the late Founder KCG Verghese’s vision of ‘Making Every Man a Success and No Man a Failure” and it is a matter of pride that HGI has accomplished 50 years of excellence in education. The HGI Golden Jubilee Souvenir was released by Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu. The souvenir records a culmination of notable 50 years of accomplishments. INFRASTRUCTURE The University is situated in an enthralling Arcadian ambience; spread over a hundred acres of lush green landscape, with impressive stately buildings whose design features an integrated approach to environmental sustainability. Overall built up area is about ten lakh square feet. The Bay Range campus consists of dedicated blocks for academic pursuits with state of the art labs, seminar halls, smart class rooms, lecture theatres, central library, auditorium etc. Other facilities include modern hostels with vibrant living space, well equipped gym, play fields, multi cuisine canteens, guest houses, shopping complex, bank etc. The atmosphere is conducive for developing close social and academic networks during the stay in the University. Other essential eco-friendly aspects incorporated are a sewage treatment plant, solar power generation system, centralized RO plant for providing hygienic drinking water and a plastic free campus. The infrastructure is added every year to cater for the enhanced strength of students and to meet the technological demands necessitated for effective teachinglearning process, which is a dynamic process. In keeping with our commitment to continuous, a need-based enhancement of infrastructure and modernization of facilities, the Management has added new hi-tech Academic Buildings to house classrooms, labs, and hostels. Further, existing facilities have been upgraded to meet the emerging needs of students in the global education al environment.

Placement/Training Programme Hindustan Campus Recruitment Drive (HCRD’18) The academic year witnessed 52 multi-national and national companies hosting their Campus Recruitment drive in Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science. Infosys, IBM, Indian Navy, Accenture, Ramco Systems, Vistas, ZOHO, IDBI, Sanmar, Paypal, Jaro, HSBC, McKisey, etc. were the major recruiters. M/s Amazon offered the highest CTC of INR 26 Lakhs Per Annum. Among 387 registered students, 289 got placed making an overall 74.68% of placement record. Career Guidance Sessions Department of Placement organized Career Awareness Programme for all final year students with Professionals from State Bank of India and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Govt. Of India.

Business Incubator and Entrepreneurship ABOUT HTBI & HEIC The Hindustan Technology Business Incubator (HTBI) & Hindustan Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre (HEIC) is focused to encourage the innovative talents and spirits of the students through several internal and external programmes. Currently there are about 820 student members registered with HTBI & HEIC from different disciplines. About 10

student clubs have been formed and are active at the HTBI & HEIC. HTBI & HEIC has expert mentors, who visit every week and contribute to shaping up innovation and entrepreneurship ideas. HTBI & HEIC is also well networked with professional bodies promoting entrepreneurship viz., CII, TIE, MMA, MSME, NEN, etc.

STAFF ACHIEVEMENTS • HITS was presented a “Certificate of Appreciation” for its 5 years of continuous association with PALS on 7th April 2018 at IIT Madras. Dr. T.S. Ravikumar and Dr. M.K. Chancellor’s Trophy In honouring Dr. Elizabeth Verghese on the Chancellor’s birthday, a sports extravaganza was hosted from 23rd to 25th September, 2017. To honour the special occasion, tournaments such as the 9th International Football Tournament for Foreign National Students, and the 8th Inter Collegiate Volleyball Tournament for Men and Women were organized. The participant football teams hailed from several countries such as Gambia, Sudan, South Sudan, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet and Somalia. The team Gambia XI lifted the winning men’s football trophy. The award for the 8th Inter College Volleyball Tournament in Men and Women category was bagged each by men from Panimalar College and women from HITS. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese presented the Trophies, Cash Award and Certificate to the winners.

Youth Winter Camp

Youth Winter Residential Camp was organized by PBA Academy in association with HITS between 22nd December 2017 and 3rd January 2018. The vision of the camp was to train on basic skills, advanced techniques and tactics for the Basketball and Football players. 35 players pan India enrolled in the camp. The Golden Jubilee Christmas Celebrations on 1st December 2017 was a momentous for HITS with excellent choir rendition of carols and tableau with pomp and gaiety by the entire HGI. The Chief Guest, Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Makarios, Bishop of Mar Thoma Church, Chennai-Bangalore Diocese in his Christmas message said that the message of Christmas is that the visible material world is bound to the invisible spiritual world. The Guest of Honour, Prof. P. J. Kurien, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha voiced that Christmas is a spirit which should permeate every part of our lives.

The Department of Languages hosted the “World Drama Fest 2018 commemorating the World Theatre Day on 27th March 2018. The event, was organized by the Masquerade Theatre Club, HITS. Mar Thoma Church, Chennai Bangalore Diocese Teens conference was inaugurated on 27th December 2017. Youngsters from Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra, Tamil Nadu participated in the conference. Rt. Rev. Fiesta-2017, Freshers Day was held on 27th October 2017. Mr. Sujith Kumar, HR Business Leader, Infosys Ltd., Chennai was the Chief Guest. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor addressed the students and elaborated the role of discipline, dedication and hard work in making a person successful. She urged the students to follow the Founder Dr. K.C.G Verghese, HGI as a role model in their life and emerge as living examples of the vision of the institution.

The University Day was celebrated on 4th April 2018 with Mr. Ashok Thakur, Former Secretary, Dept. of Higher Education, MHRD, New Delhi as the Chief Guest. Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, HITS welcomed the august gathering. Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, HGI gave the Presidential address. Dr. Kuncheria P. Isaac, Vice Chancellor read the Annual Report comprising the notable accomplishments of the institute, staff and the students. Staff awards were given for distinguished services; and Academic Proficiency Awards and Special Achievements Awards were given to students for excellence in academia. The event also witnessed the release of Campus Talk, the newsletter of HITS; and installation of Students Council 2018-2019.

Girl Power Summit, an initiative from Entrepreneurs Council of India in association with HITS was conducted on 11th March 2018. Eminent women achievers from various sectors were invited for motivational talks and panel discussions. INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL COLLABORATIONS Most of the challenges in higher education are global in nature; and addressing them requires collaboration that is of international standard. Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science aids to develop partnership between the researchers and scientists who are based overseas as well as bring together policymakers and scientists from around the world. The office of International Affairs brings faculty and students together in exchange programmes, summer programmes, study tours, internships, competitions, cultural exchange programmes, special courses for international students and research projects that fundamentally strive to create a better world—one that is freer, more peaceful, more humane, more just, and more inclusive. Alumni Reunion

• The fourth batch of HCE (1988-1992) celebrated their 25th reunion on 5th August 2017 at HITS campus. The reunion took place amidst a host of activities with student body including discussions on Art of Negotiating, Corporate Finance, SelfReliance, Creating Opportunities and Scope of Engineers in Aviation Sector. • The first batch of MCA (1994-1997) visited campus on 21st July 2017. They felicitated the teachers and staff of their department. They had a campus tour and were greatly appreciative about the significant achievement and transformation on the campus. • The fifth batch of HCE (Class of 1993) celebrated the Silver Jubilee Reunion on 7th July 2018. The event was attended by Deans, Retired Professors, and HoDs who were a part of the batch.

Golden Convergence 2018

The Hindustan Group of Institutions celebrated its Golden Jubilee Year in a high anticipatory note. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Golden Convergence 2018 – HGI Global Jubilee Alumni Reunion, a mega Alumni gathering was organized by HGI in association with their alumni Associations, on 2nd December 2017. The conglomeration of over 1000 Alumni from HIET, HCE/HITS, KCG College of Technology, HCAS & OFS across the globe took part in the event.

GYAN DISHA

GYAN DISHA, a Project Expo was organized for the final year engineering students and faculty on 8th May 2018. This alumni sponsored event had 15 jury members who comprised former various Industry and Entrepreneurship background. The Government funding was announced for over 15 projects and over Twenty Projects were selected for patent applications. The event aimed at creating an interactive platform for Alumni and Students exchange programs in the

future. It is expected to generate increasing placement synergy, career guidance, spot Recruitments, patent filing and Govt funding for Entrepreneur initiatives for our students. All the schools were granted three alumni sponsored cash prize and all the participants received Participation certificate.

Success Day

The Success Day was organized in collaboration with Placement Cell, HITSAA. The objective of the Success Day was to recognize individual student’s academic achievement at the time of his or her graduation from HITS. Upon finding placements at various high brand companies, students were presented mementos of T-Shirt and Recognition Certificate for their achievement.

HGI–Bhutan Alumni Association celebrated their Reunion on 30th June 2018 at Hotel Ariya, Thimphu, Bhutan. Around 70 Alumni from all the Educational Institutes of Hindustan Group of Institutions attended the event. The reunion served an opportunity to get together, know each others’ career development, and share life’s happenings. It concluded with a Bhutanese cultural dance performed by the alumni. Alumni gave a portrait of Bhutan’s King’s family as a souvenir to Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor; and Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, HITS.
