GOLD WITHIN BRAND TOOLKIT

There are as many perceptions and experiences of DePauw as there are people who know the university, whether as an alumnus/a, a student, faculty or staff member, parent, donor or a prospect. During extensive research and

discovery with stakeholders over the past several years, however, consistent themes and descriptors have emerged time and again when people are asked to describe DePauw or the DePauw experience.

These perceptions cumulatively create DePauw’s “brand” image. Although that image is not one thing, establishing a brand theme and message pillars authentic to the university as a whole can clarify that image and instill a sense of connection and community.

This toolkit is intended to provide a single, easily referenced source for the most commonly identified characteristics of DePauw; its core messaging, brand promise and pillars, voice/tone and brand theme; and the logos, colors, fonts, marks and other elements of the university’s identity system. We hope it is useful to those who frequently speak to prospective families and other stakeholders, answer questions or prepare digital content and/or publications.

Facts, core messaging and other components or elements should be reviewed and updated as the institution

changes. Hence, content in this manual will change, especially rankings and other proof-point facts. The user

should always check facts and refresh examples of text or design as needed to remain current. C&M is always happy to edit and fact-check any materials produced throughout campus.

The university, its people and its programs benefit from cohesively describing authentic, common-core strengths.

Our mission, vision, values, core messages and unifying theme bridge our history and traditions with our vision for the future, amplify our distinctions and cohere how we talk about our most important asset: Our reputation. – The DePauw Office of Communications and Marketing, January 2020

BRAND THEME, R AT I O N A L E , PROMISE AND CORE MESSAGING The most challenging aspect of brand identity is to bring together myriad distinctions and attributes

and distill them in a succinct, memorable and authentic way that resonates with target audiences. The best brand themes unify and are adaptable throughout an organization, instill pride in it and connect personally (and emotionally) with individuals internally and externally. They have to be “ownable.” During research and discovery in 2017-19, DePauw’s official color (DePauw Gold) caught the

attention of external audiences. It already was being used internally to symbolize excellence and the

DePauw spirit. Externally, DePauw Gold clearly resonated with prospective families in an important way: It was associated with quality. In the words of one parent, “Gold means the best and I want my (child) to have the best.”

But how do we make DePauw Gold something more

memorable, meaningful and relatable? The answer came “within” the DEPAUW name itself: Au is the chemical symbol for gold. Adding “within” creates an immediate

sense of personal interpretation, as in, “what does ‘Gold Within’ mean to me?” It speaks to quality and what is most important to each of us.

GOLD WITHI N 5

BRAND R AT I O N A L E : GOLD WITHIN Gold is DePauw’s defining element. It shines in our students as

they embrace new knowledge; our faculty as its members deliver academic excellence; our student athletes as they take the court or field; and our alumni as they achieve extraordinary success.

DePauw gold is the color that represents our spirit, defines our

academic standard and signifies our commitment to the success of every student and graduate.

Like the element of gold, DePauw’s comprehensive liberal education retains its value. Since

antiquity a liberal education was considered the highest ideal for any “free” – hence, liberal – individual, and it remains timeless, enabling our graduates to adapt to continual change. For

nearly two centuries, a degree from DePauw has epitomized the gold standard, defined as “the best or most prestigious thing of its type.” From “Hailing Old Gold throughout the land” to the

core values to which we aspire, gold is who we are, what we stand for and what we aspire to be. Graduates of DePauw will always be “GOLD WITHIN.”

6

BRAND MESSAGING HIERARCHY DePauw’s key messaging begins with how we position the university in the

higher education marketplace – our brand promise. It includes the major pillars

on which that promise is delivered, and flows through core supporting messages and the evidence or “proof points” that support those core messages. POSITIONING/BRAND PROMISE: DePauw is a top-tier national liberal arts university

that, through the fusion of academic excellence and vast

experiential opportunities, prepares leaders for personal and professional success.

DePauw’s “Gold Within” represents more than the university as a

whole. Every department and program; the School of Music; student; and faculty or staff member can “own” Gold Within, adapting it to

their specific standout qualities. A few examples that might work in an

advertisement are below, but more important are the core messages that resonate with prospects that can be shared in print, in video, through social and photographs or orally in a one-to-one meeting.

Proof points for departments and programs, which we encourage every

program to develop, include rankings, faculty and research achievement,

the employers that hire your graduates and examples of where alumni are working. All of these contribute to DePauw’s “gold-standard” reputation.

student organizations are integral to the DePauw experience and also have messages distinct from

the core messaging or proof points used at the university level to connect with prospective families and students.

These distinctions can easily connect with DePauw in a way that stays true to DePauw’s brand.

The university positioning, brand promise and brand pillars link all areas and provide a common foundation; however, the supporting messages for the pillars and the proof points can be customized to the strengths of each program or area.

The front side of the foldout page that follows shows how DePauw’s messaging hierarchy “ladders” from the positioning and pillars through to the proof points. On the reverse side, a template is

in place to make it easier for individual campus areas to envision their distinctions. The Office of

Communications and Marketing is happy to assist any campus area in preparing its own hierarchy

and determining standout messaging and proof points ideal for enhancing visibility and awareness. Note that starting with proof points first, and laddering up to the positioning, can make the

process much easier. Most find their proof points fit naturally under the university brand pillars.

12

EXAMPLE All DePauw academic programs strive to deliver a Gold Standard Education; that brand pillar is one we share. Core supporting messaging and proof points for that pillar will vary from, say, the School of Music (which might emphasize the value of 1:1 instruction that represents a gold standard) and Classical Languages (which might focus on the deep immersion in global cultures). Both programs would identify successful graduates in support of the Uncommonly Successful Alumni pillar, and both programs have Powerful alumni and faculty Networks of Support unique to them.

UNIFYING BRAND THEME: Once you attend DePauw, you’ll always be Gold Within.

FOR COPYWRITERS: ARCHETYPES, VOICE AND TONE “Who” is DePauw? The DePauw Archetype Archetypes are often used by copywriters and others in marketing roles to

provide an organization with personality. In other words, as if the organization were a person. Adopting a voice or persona – or “getting into character”

– via an archetype can make it easier to talk with others about “who” the organization is and what it stands for. Archetypes are not “promoted” or

“advertised” per se, but they act as a filter for brand identity, help establish an authentic tone and voice and reinforce internal values and external vision. Through extensive research, several attributes surfaced repeatedly that indicated DePauw’s overarching archetype is THE CHAMPION.

THE CHAMPION A guide and supporter who encourages the dreams of others, instilling will, determination and confidence in those in their care. The role of The Champion today is more crucial than ever, as Gen Z seeks strong support, but also independence and inspiration. The Champion is instrumental in the lives of those he/she/they touch, which is a defining characteristic of DePauw. DePauw is The Champion for the future of each and every student.

15

Secondary Archetypes Just as individual personalities have more than one facet, so does The Champion. Three predominant archetype

dimensions rose to the surface during the most recent discovery research at DePauw, which built on previous archetype research (previous types are in parentheses) to provide a more holistic picture of DePauw’s Champion persona:

Tips for Writing About DePauw Read it out loud. A good way to test the voice in which you are writing is to read what you’ve written aloud, which helps you “hear” the tone you are projecting.

Tell a story or, better yet, let others tell it for you. Letting your students, staff, alumni or faculty tell the story in their own way brings an authenticity to your

interest in an organization faster than being “talked down” to.

Be inclusive. We strive to be welcoming and inclusive; our

Write about DePauw the same way you would talk

to someone about DePauw. In fact, pretend you are

talking to a friend or colleague or family member as you write, especially when speaking to prospective students, who are teenagers who especially value

someone they can talk to or who feels like a friend.

18

Avoid jargon or academic-speak; nothing shuts down

most important constituents as individuals, rather personal needs. Personas can be developed to help

you think about the particular needs of, for example, a first-generation student prospect, a prospective

parent, a domestic student of color or international student, a legacy student or an internal constituent such as an alumnus/a.

EXAMPLE Carly is a high school senior. Her grades are good but she struggles with standardized tests and is concerned her test scores will keep her from getting a good scholarship. Her parents went to college but have struggled financially due to layoffs stemming from the Great Recession, and Carly does not want them to bear the full burden of her education. To have as many options as possible, she is applying to nine universities – public, private and liberal arts universities. Carly worked during high school and is a university yearbook editor. She is interested in many things and has no idea what she wants to major in, so universities and colleges that encourage exploration are important to her. Help with figuring out financial aid and predicting all her costs to go to college are also important. Although she would love to go to school in a different state from her home, a distance close enough to drive home is important. Carly spends about two hours a day online, searching for colleges and on social media but is frequently distracted and interrupted during her searches. In this example, it is much easier for someone telling Carly about DePauw than telling a general student audience about DePauw. Tailoring personalized communications and contact points to nurture her through the process is critical.

PHOTOGRAPHY A N D V I D E O G R A P H Y: GUIDELINES AND SERVICES There is no one way to shoot a DePauw photo. Each situation will require its own approach based on

C&M has a staff photographer and a staff videographer who shoot for universitywide purposes; they are available for limited assignments if a request is made here. C&M also has a storage system of photographs and videos catalogued by type and is always happy to allow access or provide a range of existing photos when there is not time to shoot something new. The office also provides professional headshots and a photographer and/or videographer for externally facing and major events that capture the rich variety of campus life. 20

SOCIAL MEDIA: GUIDELINES AND SERVICES GUIDELINES We view DePauw University’s social media – both official and affiliated accounts – as spaces to celebrate, inform, organize and converse. To that end, we ask DePauw community members to participate in social media in ways that express our core values. Diversity and Inclusion We expect social media accounts that speak for campus entities (e.g., departments, athletics) to represent the broadest potential participation in those groups and to communicate with external audiences in respectful and welcoming ways. Student Focus While every single one of our communications in social media isn’t exclusive to students, we encourage staff and faculty members to 1) use social media to share their daily interactions with students, and 2) consistently model respectful dialogue.

22

Collaboration and Curiosity No person, department, office, organization or team at DePauw is an island. When possible, highlight the ways we support each other in our endeavors. Also, as an academic community, we are also naturally curious about the world and our place in it. Curiosity is vital to both teaching and learning, and our social media should express this curiosity. Beyond our core values, we expect DePauw-affiliated accounts to abide by all professional and community standards, as well as any applicable visual identity guidelines. Finally, all official and affiliated social media accounts must be associated with a primary account holder at DePauw and registered through a depauw.edu email address.

CONDUCT POLICY We are not responsible for comments or wall postings made by visitors to our social media accounts. Posted comments and replies also do not in any way reflect the opinions or policies of DePauw University. We reserve the right to remove comments that are abusive, profane, violent, obscene, spam, that advocate illegal activity, contain falsehoods or are wildly off-topic, or that libel, incite, threaten or make ad hominem attacks on DePauw students, employees, guests or other individuals. We also do not permit messages selling products or promoting commercial, political or other ventures.

IDENTITY S TA N D A R D S Although logos, marks or other iconic symbols are not the sole elements of any brand, they

are its visual extension and “stamp,” and often are the most frequently seen elements. Consistent use of color, font and marks help avoid confusion and, over time, become strongly associated with university identity. The primary, formal university logo (East College visual) should be used for official correspondence, such as on letterhead with matching envelopes. The formal, primary mark should be included on the mailing panel of direct mail pieces and on the back cover of publications and brochures, along with the Equal Opportunity Statement. (?)

GOLD WITHIN MARK The Gold Within mark is an informal or secondary mark that incorporates the DePauw University brand theme and the founding year of DePauw. The AU is capitalized in this mark as a creative representation of the elemental symbol for gold.

DIG 200307-20M

It can be used on the front of or within a publication (as long as the formal DePauw University mark is

used on the back of the same publication) or on merchandise/gifts and other informal, digital or retail use. In a publication, it should be used primarily as an additional art element and does not replace the primary, official logo. On merchandise (such as t-shirts or water bottles, for example), it can be used alone.

UNACCEPTABLE USES Do not manipulate or distort the DePauw University logo, for example, by stretching or compressing it:

Do not redesign any element of the logo:

MINIMUM DESIGN STANDARDS Do not reposition, resize, or separate components:

Do not replace an element of the logo:

Do not overlap other logos or marks:

Do not add any elements to the log o, such as a line or punctuation mark:

The official DePauw logo should be included in full on the back (or last slide) of all externally facing brochures, videos, presentations and other marketing material and, in small print, the office that produced the publication, the month and the year. (Leftaligned logo, center-aligned logo, visual examples of these used on a publication, etc.) The front of externally facing publications (or first slide of presentations or video openings) should also use the DePauw logo, although the East College or Arch icon can be separated from the wordmark when the design needs to be simplified. For certain designs, such as those that are particularly busy, use full-bleed photography or other artwork, the wordmark by itself can be used. (Visual example)

UNIVERSITY SEAL

Unless specified in this manual, do not add words or images to the logo to create a composite logo treatment:

Use of the DePauw University seal is restricted to formal, official and celebratory use and to signify the earning of a DePauw degree. It may not be used on marketing collateral or most merchandise (except for high-end merchandise such as gifts or items to recognize an achievement).

Do not remove any elements of the logo:

Publications should include on the back whenever possible a primary university logo, EEO statement and the date of the publication in small print.

Inscribed in Latin on the seal are these words: “The College is the Splendor and Light of the Common Good.”

COMMON QUESTIONS What do we mean by “liberal arts and sciences?”

Although a liberal or “liberal arts” education has historically been considered the ideal, research at the national level continues to show that prospects, for the most part, don’t know what those terms mean. Liberal arts colleges in general have not done a good job of explaining in a relatable way the value of a liberal education. At DePauw, components of that value proposition important to teenagers and their parents include the following, worded in a straightforward way: n You can do almost anything with it: This type of education is broad-based and develops intellect,

well-rounded knowledge and life skills important to ALL careers.

n A liberal arts and sciences education prepares you to solve problems, read and write well, communicate clearly and adapt quickly.

n Many recent surveys of employers have revealed that they prefer students with these “soft” skills;

they can teach hard skills, but need workers who can lead, collaborate and communicate. Hard

skills-based studies focus more on mastery of a

skill, memorizing facts and methodologies. While these are of value, what happens when that field becomes obsolete?

n Liberal arts grads also tend to seek out career

pathways that are meaningful to them over the

long haul, not just one that pays more money.

humanities graduates, for example, are now

means.

fundraisers, ambassadors, veterinarians, teachers,

In other words, they seek a life of meaning and n Liberal arts majors tend to earn more over their lifetimes than students in other majors because

of their transferable capabilities that adapt more readily to a rapidly evolving world. Many of the careers of today won’t be around tomorrow, so people who have broad-based knowledge can respond to and thrive through change.

n DePauw provides an unusually large array of

software developers, CEOs, lawyers, doctors, professors, authors, journalists or marketers.

n DePauw is among a small number of truly

national liberal arts colleges (in the Top 50 of U.S. News & World Report rankings). Even fewer of

those also have a School of Music, which provides myriad cultural, cocurricular and extracurricular opportunities for all students.

accomplishment and purpose. Students here tend to deeply engaged in campus life.

Why should I pay more to go to DePauw than to a state school? GOLD STANDARD ACADEMICS DePauw costs more primarily because of the attention your student gets from professors here and the fact that full professors teach virtually all classes. U.S. News & World Report and other worldwide rankings use class size and faculty-student ration as key measures of academic quality. Why? n It rates class sizes between 1 and 19 as ideal due to the increased level of participation required in class and the attention faculty are able to devote to each student. At DePauw, class sizes are an average of 9-11, not 100 or more.

n Lower student-faculty ratios (8:1 at DePauw) improve graduation/retention rates. Why? Because it is equivalent to getting one-to-one interaction with your mentor/advisor/professor.

n You may have more opportunities to gain

leadership experience because there will be less competition than at big schools.

n Your student will also find it easier to make a

difference on campus. Individual students can

really stand out at DePauw in a way they typically don’t at a large university.

n We prepare our students for positive outcomes. DePauw’s graduates are very successful, with

alumni that represent a “who’s who” across so Other reasons why a higher investment in a small, private university is worth it: n A professor or graduate student at a major university won’t know whether a student

attends class or not. It’s easier to skip class in a 300-person lecture. At DePauw, the professor notices … and follows up to make sure the assignments aren’t missed.

n Professors have more time for advising, with

students getting as much as they need instead of waiting to schedule half-hour appointments.

n Having all classes taught by full professors who

are subject experts is worth it; at large universities, many classes are taught by non-expert adjuncts or grad students.

n At DePauw, teaching is THE priority for

professors. According to the website ThoughtCo, tenure and promotion at small schools depend

28

upon quality teaching. At a large research university, research can be more important than teaching and faculty have to devote a lot of time to master’s and Ph.D. students. DePauw is 100% undergraduates, with everything geared towards their needs. U.S. News: “At many (large) research universities, “publish or perish” is still the phrase of the day. As a result, professors there who seek tenure and promotion have to make research their No. 1 priority and teaching, at best, No. 2. At small colleges, on the other hand, teaching is the main criterion for advancement.”

n At DePauw, research is something professors do with undergraduates.

n There are usually opportunities to create

individually designed majors rather than being

stuck with the programs that are officially offered by the school.

many industries.

n There’s more administrative red tape at large

schools; if a student wants to switch majors, for

example, there are more signatures and approvals required.

n You can get to know most people and will run into familiar faces everywhere you go.

n At small colleges, the camaraderie and sense of

community among students is often very strong. U.S. News: “ You will be spared the endless lines at registration, the hand-to-hand combat to get into closed classes, and the sprinting between innumerable offices to try to get your simplest questions answered …”

n For athletes: More than 30% of DePauw’s

students are Division 3 athletes who love to

compete; team spirit support from among and within all teams are very strong.

COLORS AND FONTS Colors

Fonts

The official DePauw University colors are black and gold. Gold should be used frequently on publications, websites, sweatshirts, etc. School colors are an important tool for building school pride and awareness.

The DePauw identity system includes specific fonts that are to be used on all University publications. Under no circumstances should a designer employ fonts other than those specified here. Questions should be directed to the Office of Communications and Marketing.

It is important that when the colors are used they are rendered accurately. This can pose a significant challenge, since vendors working in various media use different means for reproducing colors, for example on an athletic uniform, delivery vehicle or banner. The ultimate reference point for the school colors is the Pantone color Matching System (PMS) developed for offset printing. The official designation for the school colors are to the right.

These typefaces have been selected to provide sufficient flexibility for a range of communications while maintaining a coherent and consistent DePauw look. They complement the DePauw logo system, and each font family offers a wide range of weights and style choices, including italics, bold, etc. to allow for numerous design options.
