Graphic Novel Review: Nuts By Stacy Dermont Sag Harbor cartoonist and writer Gahan Wilson has another stellar book out – Nuts, A Graphic Novel is a compilation of Wilson’s Nuts comics that appeared in National Lampoon from 1972 to 1986. The dedication reads, “Dedicated to All of Us,” because everyone can identify with this wild and whacky vision of childhood. How did we make it through? Laugh along with Wilson as his characters answer the messy questions he poses in the introduction: “Remember how small you were and how brave you had to be to get through it all?” Hot on the heels of Wilson’s epic release of the three-volume set Fifty Years of Gahan Wilson (Fantagraphics, 2010), which chronicled Wilson’s
comics for Playboy, this smaller tome is a must-have for Wilson fans and kids of every age. It’s all here in “graphic” detail: lectures about responsibility, sick days, summer camp, book reports, pranks, cleaning your room, American history, creepy basements and much more. AND, now, we can laugh about it all! So pick up a few copies of Nuts for your holiday shopping. As Wilson says, “Those of you who remember how great it was to be a little kid, gang, don’t remember how it was to be a little kid.” It ain’t Charles Schulz’ Peanuts. Nuts, A Graphic Novel by Gahan Wilson, (Fantagraphics, 2011) is available from all local book stores and online.
