Sixteen-year-old Canadian singer Justin Bieber, who went from being an unknown artist on You Tube to a mega famous teen rock idol with an album My World 2.0 and several hit singles “Baby,” “Eenie Meenie,” with Sean Kingston, and his current single, “Somebody to Love,” is officially a pencil pusher! Yeah, I said it. What? He is part of the PoP global movement that hit the Hamptons this past Saturday. The Boat House, in East Hampton played host to Bieber’s fav organization, PENCILS of PROMISE, a charity which works to build schools and increase educational opportunities in the developing world. Actress Taryn Manning who stars in the upcoming CBS series, “Hawaii Five-O” was the official celebrity DJ and entertained PoP party goers by mixing it up on the turn tables alongside her boyfriend, Michael Linney. Adam Braun is the founder of PoP and was inspired by a trip to India, where he met a young boy who was Linney, Manning begging on the streets. Braun asked him, “What do you want most in the world?” The boy replied, “A pencil.” Braun reached into his backpack and handed him a pencil and then watched as a wave of possibility washed over him. Braun says, “I saw then the profound power and promise brought through something as small as a giving a pencil to just one child.” Over the next five years. Braun backpacked through more than 50 countries and handed out thousands of pens and pencils across six continents. According to Braun, the pencils are small pieces of potential that led to powerful conversations throughout numerous cultures and languages—conversations about the state of education and the local need to empower. Thanks to a $25 bank deposit by Braun and a simple desire to build just one school in the developing world. In less than two years, PoP has grown into an international movement of over 40,000 committed supporters. Even better, the first three schools were entirely funded by donations of less than $50 by students and young professionals from across the globe. That brings us back to Bieber who is such a dedicated pencil pusher that he wants to donate one dollar per ticket, from the sales of his upcoming National Concert Tour which kicks off June 23.
