By Dan Rattiner Week of June 4 – 10, 2010 Riders this week: 17,812 Rider miles this week: 154,821 DOWN IN THE TUBE Raul Castro of Cuba was seen amidst the crowds of straphangers using the Hampton Subway on the line between Amagansett and Montauk. Rumor is that he was here for a meeting with Hillary Clinton involving cultural exchanges at Steven Spielberg’s house in East Hampton but was on his way to have a lobster dinner at Montauk with some Venezuelan friends. Also seen on the Hampton Subway on Thursday were photographer Walter Iooss and six swimsuit models bouncing along between Quiogue and Westhampton Beach. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is being shot on the Hampton Subway this year.

when the crowds came, which we considered something of an emergency. Oddly, a group of demonstrators protested at the Southampton platform last Wednesday. They were members of a group called “Save Our Subway Cars,” since, as they say and its true, our subway cars work nearly 22 hours a day seven days a week without even ten minutes off. But if they hadn’t all done so on this occasion, we might have had to close the system because of overcrowding.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CLARISSA Clarissa, the popular token salesperson at our Amagansett token booth celebrated her 24th birthday last Wednesday. Happy birthday, Clarissa. Her last name is Jones, by the way, but everybody just calls her Clarissa.

NUMBER OF PROTESTS TO BE LIMITED At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Hampton Subway last week, it was voted that we will allow no more than one protest demonstration per month on the system. Since we had two protests in the last two weeks, one by a group calling itself “The All or Nothing Tea Party” two weeks ago and the other called “The Save Our Subway Cars” group last week, the demonstration at the Three Mile Harbor platform to “Save the Baymen,” which was held without anybody’s permission, will be the last protest allowed until August. The Board appreciates everybody’s right to protest. One protest a month is the limit.

RECORD NUMBER OF RIDERS More people used the Hampton Subway last week than at any time in the history of its service. It beat the prior record, which took place on July 4, 2007, by half again more. Many subway cars, unused since that summer, had to be rushed into service from our Montauk yards in order to handle the crowds, and if some of them were dusty or dirty, the riders just had to put up with them. There was simply not enough time to get things ship shape

NEW SUBWAY STOP PROPOSED The board approved plans to create a new Sagaponack subway stop, with the stairs going down to the platform directly across the street from the Sagg General Store building. The stop will be a dead end, with a turntable underground, and will connect Sagaponack to the Wainscott stop and should be open to the public in 2017. No permission is needed to do this from the Village of Sagaponack, as you may know, because the subway will be built entirely

COMMISSIONER ASPINALL’S MESSAGE I wish to personally thank the 26 men and women and even one child, who, answering our call for volunteer motormen after we ran out of trained drivers. They sacrificed their day on either Saturday or Sunday of Memorial Day weekend to drive the lead cars of the various trains around the circuit. It was amazing that, after only a ten minute briefing on how to work the levers, these brave people were able to operate the accelerators, brakes and sliding doors without incident.

the season Re-Union last week, which apparently had “so much good stuff ” including two walk offs and a dramatic foot stomp, that the producers are going to break it down into two parts, scheduled to air late June. On Saturday night, fellow Real Housewives of NY star Kelly Killoren Bensimon stopped by Georgica for dinner, while Vampire Diaries starlet Sara Canning and 90210’s hearthrob Matt Lanter joined friends for some Absolut cocktails until the wee hours. This past Sunday, supermodel Jessica White hosted the first annual Angel Wings Foundation Dinner at Georgica. White, who founded the charity to raise money for sexually abused women and girls, was joined by benefit committee members including Russell Simmons, Charlotte Ronson, Jeff Goldstein, Sports Illustrated model Irina Shayak, Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum. Guests were treated to a private dinner and live auction, with all profits benefiting Angel Wings. Simmons made heads turn when he arrived with a leggy blonde model type and stopped by the kitchen to tell chef Levine that while he heard amazing things about the food, he already ate dinner because he forgot to let anyone know that he was vegan. Levine told Simmons they have several vegan options and Simmons promised he’d be back. Jessica White candidly spoke to the crowd, thanking them for their support. White, in an emotional moment, thanked the crowd for supporting such a great cause and said she was thrilled that she can now give back. This past Saturday evening, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps and Bravo’s Andy Cohen hosted The 20th Annual Gala to benefit the Miracle House at the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club. The Countess told me she had a lot to celebrate including her chance to finally showcase her singing ability and create an original single, “Money Can’t Buy You Class” (it’s catchy) and the fact that her and her cast mates just wrapped up the third season by shooting the reunion show last week, “there was lots of crying going on,” said Leseps. When I saw the Countess over the weekend there wasn’t a tear in site, she was glowing and introduced me to her official new “boyfriend” French wine distributor, Jacques Azoulay. Gina Glickman is a TV host, director, writer, executive producer and founder of GMG Entertainment. Look out for Gina starring in the Ninth season of the hit series, News 12 Long Island's "What's Hot in the Hamptons."
