FOOD. FORM. FUNCTION.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, functionality is key. “A kitchen is a very personal place,” shares John Jakob, owner of Sears Hometown Store on Richmond Road. “It is the heart of the home and the room that gets the most use. Personal functionality is the core goal we hear from our customers.” If you are looking to update your kitchen, first think about the appliances you want.

APPLIANCES

“It is the appliances that make the kitchen work and make your life easier,” Jakob says. “Get what works for you.” Modern kitchen trends reflect what people desire in terms of food and convenience. “As we see lifestyles change, so do kitchens,” says Jakob. “Things like eating healthier with fewer processed foods change the demands for things like freezer space and oven cooking features. Busy families can now find Smart features on ovens where you can change the start cooking time from your smart phone on the casserole you put in the oven before you went to work.”

COLOR and texture

When it comes to cabinetry, people are asking for lighter color cabinets that are more open, either with glass or simply just open shelves. White cabinets remain popular, but this year, “grey is the new white,” shares Ronneberg. Two-toned cabinets are also big. People are using two different colors in the kitchen to add color contrast and diversity. Islands, for example, are a different color from the cabinetry, or cupboards are painted one color on the top and another color on the bottom. Darker browns contrast well with stainless steel cabinets. People are also requesting additional lighting in the cabinets. And what about counter tops? There are several options available, ranging from laminate counter tops to stones, synthetics, and natural options. Granite, wood, quartz in various colors, and metallics are popular choices, as well as “lookalikes,” less expensive versions of the real thing (using laminate in lieu of granite, for example). People are also adding Smart spaces to counter areas, designated spots for their cell phones, tablets, and other electronics so that they can be easily charged and stored. Backsplashes — vertical extensions to the counter that protect the wall from splashes of water — are also trendy in kitchens. Instead of using subway tile, people are using larger tiles for backsplashes to create a box weaving look. “People are going bigger with backsplashing,” Ronneberg says. “They want something different. They want something that makes a statement.”

STORAGE

Storage is always an issue in the kitchen, but you can work around that by maximizing the space of your kitchen drawers and cupboards. Jakob recommends bigger drawers. “The deeper and longer the better,” he says. “Drawers make it easier to access items.” Diane Ronneberg, a sales associate with Eastern Floor Covering, agrees. “Deep drawers are big right now,” she says. “People want clutter-free countertops.”

STRUCTURE Open kitchens are also growing, especially in homes with smaller kitchens. “Open concepts are becoming increasingly popular,” says Steve Cunningham, president of Cunningham Contracting Inc. “Walls can be removed or minimized to chair rail height to achieve this ‘openconcept.’”

12 | Home & Leisure | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette, Daily Press and Tidewater Review | April 6, 2016

If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen, Cunningham suggests hiring a reputable contractor, one that is licensed and insured. n

Home splurges to treat yourself By Melissa Rayworth Associated Press

So many of our home-improvement and design choices are practical ones: Which sofa will stand up over the years? Which paint color matches the furniture? But what about changes that could really elevate our happiness at home? Sometimes the smallest things can make home life easier and more joyful: Interior designer Kate Jackson says that starting each day using her sterling silver spoons makes the morning feel more special for her whole family. We’ve asked Jackson and two other designers — Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design for the Home Depot, and New York-based Danielle Colding — about home innovations and splurges that you can give yourself.

High-end linens Treating yourself to soft, crisp sheets and fluffy towels can be expensive, Colding says. But the difference in quality and comfort can be surprising, and for some people the enjoyment is worth the investment. And on a practical level, “they last forever,” she says, and “they wash really well.”

Warm floors all winter Colding had a client with a large house that was often filled with friends. The kitchen was the most-used room, and “he just wanted the luxury of that room feeling really good,” Colding says, but “it just felt cold.” So they found a creative solution: adding a heated floor. The key to these kinds of investments, Colding says, is knowing which ones will really improve your daily life. Although expensive, a heated kitchen floor is a feature you can use every day in the fall and winter. “It’s like when people spend $300 on jeans and it sounds crazy,” Colding says, but they wear those jeans constantly and treasure them.

Upgrading your closet “There’s something about a really well-organized, decked-out closet,” Fishburne says, that improves the start of every day. When you get dressed, she says, “you’re not rushing, going ‘Where did I put this?’” And you wear more of your clothes because you can actually see them. Technology has made closet planning simpler and more fun: Home Depot and other companies offer online planning tools that let you sketch out different configurations. And the range of storage solutions and styles of closet interiors has been expanding. continued p 16

The sound of music

FROM p 14

Jackson, who is based in Rhode Island, says clients who have invested in good sound systems installed in the walls are always glad they did.

Beautiful wallpaper

“Sounds can set a mood and have a powerful effect on how we feel through the day,” she says. Few things impact an entire home so powerfully, she says. And unlike a piece of furniture that you might get tired of, easy access to great sound is “the gift that keeps on giving.”

Painting a room is an affordable and easy do-it-yourself choice, Jackson says.

Touch faucet

One less expensive treat that Fishburne has “kind of fallen in love with” is a high-tech touch faucet. These switch on with just the lightest pressure — even a quick tap from an elbow or fingertip. So if you’re cooking and have your hands full, you can turn on the water without putting down a hot pot or heavy colander.

But the joy you may get from professionally installed, luxurious wallpaper can last for years.

There is a health benefit: If you’re cooking with raw meat or eggs and need to turn on the water, you don’t need to risk transferring germs from your hands to the tap.

While decorating the bathrooms in a client’s home, Jackson suggested striking wallpaper that “made these ‘vanilla’ rooms sing.”

And many models have an ingenious safety feature: A light shows blue or red, depending on the water temperature. n

“This is exciting for us,” Jim Penny said. “We have some interesting things inside the house that I think people will really enjoy. In addition to the historic link to the house, this will be an opportunity to let people see what we’ve done to the inside of the house.”

atural and artistic colors collide during the 2016 Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week, April 23-30. This year’s theme is “Art in the Garden.” The Williamsburg Garden Club and The College of William and Mary have partnered to sponsor speakers, tours, presentations, and other activities pertaining to Williamsburg’s leg of Historic Garden Week on April 26. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of several homes, both interior decor as well exterior gardens and landscaping. Tour headquarters this year will be The Cedars of Williamsburg Bed and Breakfast on Jamestown Road. The Colonial B&B’s gardens and gazebo as well as common rooms will be open to the public for the first time for Historic Garden Week. Other homes being showcased as part of this year’s tour include The Lindsey Home and Garden, and Bel-Mede, both on Burns Lane. “It’s been wonderful to work with our homeowners who generously open their homes and gardens to the public,” said Terry Buntrock, chairman for Historic Garden Week. Jim and Pam Penny are owners of the historic home known as Bel-Mede, which was last open for Historic Garden Week in 1953. “This house does have a history on the tour, and we thought it would be a great thing to have it on the tour again,” said Jim Penny. The couple have owned BelMede since 2008 and recently completed a renovation. They are looking forward to showcasing their formal colonial garden situated in the front of the house as well as several antique ceramics, prints and other artwork inside.

The College of William & Mary will also host a walking tour of the campus with stops at the Dodge pocket garden near Phi Beta Kappa Hall, the Swem Library sundial garden, and other sites. There will be self-guided tours of the Wildflower Refuge, Crim Dell and the Sunken Gardens.

In addition, The Virginia Glass Guild (formerly The Peninsula Glass Guild), will hold a contemporary art show and sale at the college. Meanwhile, Muscarelle Museum of Art will celebrate the event with an “Art in Bloom” fine art and flower show. Coinciding with this year’s Historic Garden Week will be Colonial Williamsburg’s 70th annual Spring Garden Symposium, slated for April 24-26. The symposium, co-sponsored by the American Horticultural Society and The Garden Club of Virginia, features lectures and gardening experts sharing their wealth of information on gardening and landscaping. Laura Viancour, landscape manager for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, is looking forward to both Historic Garden Week and the garden symposium. “I’m excited about the Historic Garden Week activities,” she said. The symposium, in particular, “helps me stay up to date on current research and trends in my field,” Viancour said. “I’m always inspired to try something new at work or in my own garden.” continued p 22

Gloucester Mathews Saturday • April 23 10a – 5p

When Gloucester and Mathews were founded in 1651 and 1791 respectively, they were blessed with beautiful waterways where colonists soon built their homes. As a consequence, today’s residents benefit from some very old historic homes, as well as the ancient trees that were planted with them. The book Remarkable Trees of Virginia sought to register the most ancient and largest trees in the Commonwealth. Two of the listed trees are included on this year’s tour as well as several other trees worthy of consideration. “Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.” (Kahlil Gibran) Featured properties embody the tour’s theme – Under the Trees. Hampton – Newport News Wednesday • April 27 10a – 5p

With beautiful homes overlooking the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, your day touring Fort Monroe will be one to remember. English explorer Captain John Smith recognized the importance of the newly named Point Comfort for defense upon the arrival of the Virginia Company in 1607. Fort Monroe is the largest stone fort ever constructed in the United States and was named in honor of President James Monroe. With eight miles of spectacular waterfront and buildings whose rooms have entertained many US Presidents, it is no wonder Fort Monroe was designated a National Monument in 2011. The grounds, streetscapes, gardens, and homes of this former US Army post tell a story of days gone by and allow visitors to experience the ongoing revitalization of this national treasure. Each tour home exhibits unique architectural character, such as sweeping porches, detailed mantel pieces, and mature landscapes. The preserved and modernized residences display the integrity of the craftsmanship and the historical significance of each home. From flavors to fragrances to cures, herbs deliver By DEAN FOSDICK

erbs are among the most useful plants in nature. They deliver flowers, flavors, fragrances and cures. They’re also good for repelling deer, attracting pollinators, clearing the air, freshening your breath and concocting beauty treatments. Most are easy to grow, indoors or out. Herbs don’t require much space, and many thrive in dry conditions. “These are really multi-purpose plants,” said Sue Goetz of Tacoma, Washington, author of “The Herb Lover’s Spa Book” (St. Lynn’s Press. 2015). “There is no other plant category with so much diversity.” Herbs probably are best known for their culinary qualities, but using them for fragrance has captivated gardeners for thousands of years. “Plant extracts were used in bathing, and for scenting and cleansing linens and clothes, the floors of homes, tiles, tents, horses and even the sails of ships,” Goetz said. “In Elizabethan times, aromatic herb waters and cut stems of plants were sprinkled on floors to mask unpleasant odors.”

There are more than 100 different herbs from which to choose. It all depends on what you want from them. Think beyond kitchen gardens, said Goetz, who recommends herbs for sanctuary settings. “Surrounding yourself with herbs in the garden is like having your own fresh apothecary,” she said. “These aren’t just plants that do one thing, like taste good; they heal, have anti-bacterial qualities, soothe skin, calm down a bad mood.” Goetz singles out mint as a plant familiar to most people yet with healing qualities all but unknown. “It is a wonderful aromatic that uplifts a tired mind, or when used in a foot spa, mint is a stimulant that revives tired feet by bringing blood to the surface or the skin,” she said. Herbs also come in handy if you have animals around the house, said Pam Miller, a master gardener from Frederick County, Maryland. “A wonderful way to deodorize carpets from pet smell is to mix two parts of baking soda to one part dried lavender flowers or leaves,” she said in a University of Maryland Cooperative Extension fact sheet.

30 | Home & Leisure | A Supplement to The Virginia Gazette, Daily Press and Tidewater Review | April 6, 2016

“Sprinkle onto the carpet as you would use a carpet deodorizer,” Miller said. “Wait 15 minutes and vacuum. Not only will your carpet be refreshed, but the ingredients will not harm your dog or cat. And it smells great when you vacuum it up.” Miller also suggests saving dried lavender stems for woodstoves or fireplaces as a fragrant additive when lighting up. Here are some herbs that people often overlook, along with some extraordinary uses:

BASIL

“Most people think of this herb (for) their latest pasta dish, but it is a good tonic herb,” Goetz said. “Basil water will help heal irritated skin. I love using the purple-leaf varieties to add color to container gardens.”

LEMON VERBENA & SCENTED GERANIUMS (pelargoniums) Intensely fragrant when rubbed or brushed against.

GERMANDER

“Nice as a small herbal hedge,” Goetz said. “Hang them in the kitchen or bathroom for a deodorizing air freshener.” For more about indoor and outdoor herb gardens, see this Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences fact sheet: http://extension.psu.edu/ juniata/news/2013/herb-gardening-101 n

Bathroom Design

By Jura Koncius

The latest word on bathroom design: less flash and more comfort. From higher vanities to steam showers, today’s bathroom trends focus on personalization and spa-like amenities, according to a recent survey. Meanwhile, the style of the bath is more likely to be transitional, neither too modern nor too traditional. And color schemes are sticking with neutral, soothing backdrops of white and gray. The National Kitchen and Bath Association’s 2016 Design Trends Report was released at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) last month in Las Vegas. It is based on a survey of more than 450 of the association’s members from across the country.

The report found about half of the responding members gave the average price for a bathroom project as between $10,000 and $29,999. Another 31 percent said their average was more than $30,000. “We are looking at clean lines and less fuss in the bathroom,” said Patricia Davis Brown, an interior designer in Vero Beach, Fl., and a survey respondent. She is designing many bathrooms customized to make users feel better. “We start our day in the bathroom and it’s the place to feel invigorated. Now we also want it to be a place that when we get back home, we can decompress in the soaking tub or steam shower.”

White was the most popular color choice for fixtures, specified by 90 percent of participants. Frills such as coffee stations, dog-washing areas, heated floors or even wet bars were growing in popularity as choosy consumers request bathroom features that fit their lifestyles.

It may be one of the few spots in the house that is serene. “People are asking for calming nature and softness in there,” Davis said. “It speaks a lot to what is happening in our world today.”

Stick to neutrals

Here are five takeaways from the bathroom trends identified in the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s report:

Gray was up nine percent from last year’s survey and now is about equal in popularity to the traditional whites and off-whites. Beige comes in third and watery blues are the fourth-most-popular color choice.

Showers are accessorized Many showers are sporting their own lighting systems, music selection, built-in seats and benches, and hand showers.

Aging-in-place amenities are for all ages

Chrome rules

Everyone can enjoy a more comfortable chair-height toilet, no-threshold shower or nicely designed grab bar. More than half of the survey respondents reported incorporating accessible and/or universal design features in bathrooms.

For 80 percent of the members surveyed, polished chrome was the No. 1 choice for faucets. Davis said even if your faucet is chrome, you don’t have to match your hardware to it and you can choose a different finish.

Tubs stand alone The trend of glamorous, free-standing tubs in master bathrooms is big.

Bring back the bees

By Teresa Woodard Chicago Tribune

pull pollinators into your garden

A

uthor Rhonda Fleming Hayes’ garden buzzes, beats and blooms, thanks to the thousands of hard-working pollinators in her eye-catching Minneapolis front yard. She’s one of the lucky ones: Nationally, bees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators are threatened by habitat loss, parasites and pesticides. In her new book, “Pollinator-Friendly Gardening,” this Master Gardener and pollinator advocate urges gardeners to attract these winged friends by planting pollinator-friendly blooms. Her book offers fascinating insights to plant-pollinator relationships, provides categorized plant lists and offers practical steps gardeners can take to make a difference in the pollinator world. We talked with her about how to plant your own pollinator-magnet garden and more. Here’s an edited transcript.

What value do pollinators bring to our gardens? By now, most folks have heard the sound bite that bees are responsible for every third bite of food we eat. Without bees and other pollinators like butterflies, birds, moths, flies and bats, our dinner plates would be lacking in color, flavor and nutrients. Bees are in trouble for a number of reasons, but the major issue is habitat loss, including millions and millions of acres just in our country. While many environmental issues are distant, abstract problems, the great thing about pollinators is we can help them right in our own backyards. Garden by garden, I hope we can make up for this habitat loss by planting more food for them, and more food equals more flowers.

What plant traits do pollinators value? In general, bees like flowers in blues and yellows with a shallow landing area. Butterflies are attracted to reds, purples and pinks, and prefer flat, daisy shapes. Hummingbirds are attracted to red tubular flowers. But, there are plenty of exceptions — like hummingbirds who are all over Salvia ‘Black and Blue.’ A good way to identify good, local pollinator plants is to observe plants in your neighbors’ gardens or a nearby botanical garden. Walk around and see what flowers have the most pollinator visitors.

What are five must-haves for a pollinator garden? I recommend five natives — milkweed, aster, goldenrod, salvia and liatris. A couple of bonus must-haves are zinnias and sunflowers since they’re so cheap and easy to grow and attract so many species of pollinators. My favorite moment this summer was when a hummingbird started harassing a monarch who was sitting on a ‘Moulin Rouge’ zinnia in a stand of 20 other blooms and apparently ignoring a popular purple zinnia from the previous season. It’s funny what proves popular to every season.

What trees and shrubs are valuable to pollinators? Don’t just think of a single flower bed, think about your whole yard — trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines, herbs, vegetables and fruit bushes. They all have value for pollinators. Fruit trees are especially important in the spring time as one of the first major sources of nectar and pollen. Other sources are crab apples, linden, chestnut and tulip trees, and shrubs like chokeberry, serviceberry, lilac, raspberry brambles and blueberries. I have a long hedge of wild rugosa roses and raspberries along my driveway. In the summertime, it literally buzzes with bumblebees and bees as they work away.

What are some of the challenges to creating a season-long buffet of overlapping blooms? Spring blooms are something that people need to really work on. In summertime, it’s easy to throw out a few flowers and get bees, but in spring, they’re really hurting. One of the first sources of nectar is one of the most

reviled flowers — the dandelion. So think about leaving some dandelions in a part of your yard or wait to mow until they’ve bloomed. Spring blooming bulbs, like scilla and alliums, are other good early nectar sources. Annuals and herbs can also help fill in gaps between various bloom times.

What is a holistic yard approach? True butterfly gardens are more than just a few pretty flowers. Unlike bees, butterflies need larval host plants to feed their caterpillars. One of the most well-known — monarchs — can’t survive without milkweed. They’re specialists, and their young need milkweed to survive and can’t eat any other plant. A lot of people are surprised to hear trees are one of the major larval host plants for a lot of butterfly species. So if you already have an oak, willow, cherry or cottonwood, you’re already providing lots of good food for those caterpillars. Herbs, especially dill, parsley and fennel, are another great source for butterfly habitat. Just plant extra for them.

What are a few easy steps for homeowners to make their backyards more pollinator friendly? First, plant more flowers. The busier people get, the more they choose foliage over flowering plants. But, those flowers are what is lacking for pollinators. Second, avoid pesticide use. My book goes into great depth on this topic explaining why and when pesticides threaten pollinators and how to avoid using them. I have a visible, quarter-acre in the city and don’t find the need for pesticides. Still, I get great compliments all the time. Third, allow for nesting sites. Honey bees go back to hives, but many wild bees are ground nesters and need bare soil for nesting. This can worry some people, because they don’t want to come upon a nest of bees with their mower or shovels. So I always say possibly there’s a corner of the yard, slope or unused area to leave unmulched for these nesting bees. Other bees use hollow stems or beetle tunnels in old logs for nesting, so consider leaving pruned debris and fallen branches in a spot for them.

How can pollinator gardens be made more neighbor friendly? Naturalistic native gardens don’t have to look weedy or unkempt. Keep short plants in the front and tall in back. Add crisp edges or mowed strips to contain natural plantings. Introduce larger flower and leaf shapes for balance. Add human touches — like a piece of garden art, a birdhouse, a chair or other decorative piece — to show “a cue to care” or hint that the garden is being tended. Consider adding a “Bee Safe” yard sign and point out pollinator activity to passersby. n

2016 Pantone Colors of the Year By Lindsey M. Roberts Washington Post

I

n 2016, Pantone invites you to reconsider your feelings about pale pink and blue. Instead of remembering them as stuffy or relegating them to nurseries, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director for Pantone Color Institute, suggests pairing the pastel “colors of the year,” Rose Quartz and Serenity, with the bold colors of recent years. It will make both feel fresh. As the world’s foremost color-trend watcher, Eiseman had noticed blush pink and a soft periwinkle blue popping up on runways and in interiors, but it was a retrospective for 20th-century American painter Agnes Martin at the Tate Modern in London that arrested her attention. “I was just taken aback,” Eiseman says of Martin’s work, which

used pale color washes in abstract forms. “It was an unexpected usage of color in a grid or in stripings, and yet it has this quiet, soft inviting feel about it.” But it’s the pairing of these soft pastels with other colors that really has Eiseman

• • •

Sea & Asters’ Blush + Wood mini wood colorblock planter adds just a dash of pink to a desk or tabletop ($22, seaandasters.com). “Step outside of the mindset of blue for boys and pink for girls,” Eiseman says. “These are not weak baby colors. They have a bit more strength than that, and more to say.” Hue Dinner Plates in blush or blue can stand on their own as a set - layer pink on pink, blue on blue - or be mixed and matched ($6 each, crateandbarrel. com). Monochromatic or polychromatic, “it’s all in the combination,” Eiseman says. Also included in the Hue collection: salad plates, mugs and bowls. Samantha Friedman, an interior designer in Bethesda, Md., suggests using pastels in accessories and other items that are easy to change out, such as bedding. Replace conventional white sheets with Area Home’s Anton Pink cotton percale ($70-$145, lekkerhome. com). Want more pink? Pair the sheets with the Sally Blanket ($180-$235).

“I have noticed a movement in the last couple of years toward lighter, airier interiors,” Eiseman says. If your dining room is feeling too heavy, refresh it with a lighter-colored set of chairs, such as the Paris Wood Side Chairs by Aeon Furniture ($92 for two, wayfair.com).

Friedman likes Kate Spade New York’s Woodgrain Rug, which gives the faux bois pattern trend a feminine touch ($700-$2,075, katespade.com). It will add subtle color to a mostly white bedroom, soften a blackand-white living room or tone down a vibrant family room.

jazzed. Take a rich chocolate or modern aubergine, for example, and add a blush pink or a lighter blue (don’t stress over matching Rose Quartz and Serenity exactly), and you have something new for the new year, a fresh start. And isn’t that what trends are all about?

Eiseman likes Rose Quartz and Serenity not only with bold colors and neutrals, but also with each other. “Blue says one thing, and rose says another. But when you bring them together, they intensify each other,” she says. “It’s like the perfect marriage.” Find them together in Zara Home’s Pastel Blue Polka-Dot Bolster ($50, zarahome.com). Trends are just like seasons: They feed our desire for variety and change. But if change comes slowly for you, “the tabletop is a wonderful place to experiment with color combinations,” Eiseman says. Start with a sky blue or blush 1-Compartment Cafeteria Tray and create a compelling vignette ($24, schoolhouseelectric.com). The petite, powdercoated Wally Task Lamp is Friedman’s pick for nightstands or desks, in blush or pale blue ($69, westelm.com). The diminutive size means that the color will add a subtle sense of calm to a bedroom. If you had any doubt that pastels could read modern, check out Ferm Living’s birch-and-oak Large Spear Tray ($120, burkedecor.com). Dusty rose meets navy meets seafoam green meets olive green. More and more of Friedman’s clients are requesting a white palette and neutral decor, turning away from the bold colors of recent years. “I think people want more of a neutral palette against which to decorate,” Friedman says. Try light colors in an ombre fashion with the Bottle Grinder Spice Mill Set ($60, leifshop.com). “Nude” pairs a light pink and peach; “blue” pairs cloud and storm blue. The set can grind spices, grains and seeds as well as salt and pepper. n
