While there are many worthy projects to choose from, here are five DIY ideas that will add beauty, functionality and value to your property. “The DIY movement is alive and well, particularly among homeowners looking to add value and personal touches,” says Diane Henkler, True Value DIY Squad

garden. Then lay the edging, anchor it down and fill in the space with dirt. You’re guaranteed to instantly see the difference.
3. Create simple patio gardens Adding plants to outdoor spaces is the perfect complement to Mother Nature, and you don’t have to be a master gardener to get a look you’ll love. For simple bursts of color that add energy to your outdoor space, fill a planter with beautiful blooms or use succulents for a lower maintenance alternative. An herb garden is another option that will
provide healthy flavor just steps from your kitchen.
4. Add a new front door While it’s one of the first things to greet you when you or a visitor enters your home, it’s easy to overlook the front door. Replacing the entryway door is a small way to make a big impact. Not ready for a new door? A fresh coat of paint revives a dated door and is a fun way to add a pop of color to your home’s facade.
5. Illuminate the night
and the design aesthetic of your home without a lot of work. Solar walkway lights are perfect for entryways or other pathways, plus they don’t require any digging to conceal cords. This small project lets you highlight beautiful yard features after dusk. Learn about more simple projects that have a big impact on your home’s style and value by visiting www.TrueValueProjects.com or by finding True Value on social media.
Adding lights to your outdoor spaces enhances security
Adding plants to outdoor spaces is the perfect complement to Mother Nature deck or patio some TLC. For wood decks, look for worn out wood that’s splitting, twisting or rotting. Sand splintered areas with a pole sander and hammer in any popped-up nails. Concrete, stone, brick and tile patios should be inspected for any sign of cracks or crumbling. Make any necessary repairs, and use the hose or pressure washer to remove dirt and mildew. Your deck and patio will instantly look new again, plus it will be much safer.
2. Install landscape edging Want to add visual elegance to your green spaces? Edging your garden provides a functional and fashionable border that sets your planting space apart from the rest of your lawn. It also protects the garden against erosion. Purchase some black plastic edging at your local True Value and dig a 4-inch edge Adding lights to your outdoor spaces enhances security and the design around the perimeter of your aesthetic of your home without a lot of work.

Vinyl siding can completely transform the look of a home and make it more energy efficient. Few home improvements can transform a home more than the installation of new siding. Replacing siding can be a costly venture, but the right siding will maintain its appeal for years to come. Updated siding can improve home’s energy value by enabling owners to save on heating and cooling costs. A new design and color also can improve a home’s property value and set it apart from neighboring properties. According to the Professional Builder’s Home Exteriors Survey, exterior design and materials used are a top priority for new home buyers. Project costs depend on the size of the home as well as
Choose a qualified contractor It is important for consumers to do their research when it comes to siding materials and contractors. A contractor who takes shortcuts or improperly installs the siding may void a manufacturer’s warranty. Always ask family members and friends for recommendations before choosing a contractor, and check out each prospective contractor’s work for yourself. Interview more than one
contractor and compare both their costs and what they offer. Ask plenty of questions of the contractors, and avoid those who try hard-sell methods. Questionable contractors may try strategies like a promise of a considerable discount if you “act now” or scare tactics that your homse is unsafe in
its present condition. Be sure the contractor carries general liability insurance as well as workers’ compensation insurance for their subcontractors. Ask for a license number as well and verify its accuracy.
Select a Durable material Siding comes in all types of materials - from wood to plastic to fiber cement — but vinyl is among the most popular due to cost and availability. Research how well

Find this information from online reviews or through consumer advocacy groups. Also remember, vinyl and other synthetic materials have improved and can now mimic the look of many other materials for a fraction of the cost.

width of each rectangular section of your house in feet, going by what you can measure from the ground, to determine their areas. Multiply the approximate height and width of gables and other triangular surfaces and divide each total by two. Then add all the totals. To allow for waste, don’t subtract for doors, windows or other areas that won’t be covered. Finally, divide
the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding you will need. A square represents 100 square feet. Knowing how much you need can save you money. Most of us are familiar with the PBS show “This Old House” where they take an old house and after many months and what many times seems like an endless budget a “New” old house is arrived upon. So now it’s my turn to try and work some magic on an old house. I recently purchased a waterfront home here on the peninsula. The last time it was remodeled was many years ago. The home was built in 1954 and she is sure showing her age. Luckily for me the systems of the home appeared to be in fairly good condition. The roof only had a few leaks and the windows had been replaced about 5 years or so ago. I wasn’t sure exactly the layout that I wanted, thus I wasn’t sure how to go about accomplishing that. Everything seemed to be a problem from the beginning. I am a bit of a “do it yourself” type of person. I like to be hands on with most of my home fix up projects but I also knew that this job was way bigger than anything I have ever attempted before, subsequently, I knew my limitations. Also, I am a realtor and was busy selling homes and certainly did not have the time required to
coordinate all the activities. Selling a home and coordinating all the activities necessary for a successful closing is something I have been doing for many years and I’m comfortable with. I also know that I’m not comfortable with having to coordinate all the activities of remodeling an expensive waterfront home. I know many sub-contractors, and I could have probably pieced the project together, however one wrong move or mistake made can potentially cost me a lot of lost time and money. So after considerable thought and speaking to many contractors I finally settled on one. After picking a trusted contractor I next needed to figure out the layout that I would like. It is a waterfront home and naturally I would like to take advantage of the water views. I have sold many waterfront homes in the area and some of them have really stood out in my mind. It is sort of like watching the show “Homes of the Rich and Famous.” I wanted my home to be open, airy and inviting. Of the nearly 2000 homes I’ve sold here in the area, nearly all of those homes had a formal dining room and the majority of those use their dining
room perhaps 2 or 3 times a year. So I had to figure out what to do with my new formal dining room that I would probably never use. Other rooms that I needed to deal with involved a small master bath, a half bath/laundry room and what would I do with the area that “was” the kitchen. I now have plan and someone to help me put it all together. But before a contractor can start the transformation, the existing issues need to be corrected. It’s interesting the things one will find when doing this demolition. The sheet rock was taken off of a wall and we found a door framed in. Currently, there is a half bath where this framed in door lead, but obviously this door at one time did not lead to the half bath (toilet is in the way,) but probably lead to some type of front porch. I had no idea that at one point in the houses history that it had a front porch. The same thing happened in a different room, we discovered a framed in window behind the sheetrock. I’m wondering what other secrets the home holds. Needless to say, I am not tearing off all the sheetrock in the search of the history of the home, but I am left wondering what they would say, if only these walls could talk…

Dasha The entrance to the Dasha (406-02) puts one in mind of a capitol rotunda, with its curved portico outside and vaulted foyer bordered by an open circular staircase inside. While the same stately tone carries over into the high-ceilinged formal living room, family room, and oval dining room, the rest of this large contemporary home is much more relaxed. The open circular staircase leads to the second floor. Here, there are four large bedrooms, a loft/recreation room, and three full baths. At its heart is a combined kitchen and family room with a sunny eating nook nestled into a bay window. The V-shaped
center island, which houses both a range and a vegetable sink, also doubles as an eating bar. There is plenty of counter and storage space here to cook and serve large gatherings of family and friends. The master suite is downstairs, separate from the other bedrooms. It features a large walk-in closet and double vanities located outside the water closet. A raised bay could either hold a spa, or serve as a bright sitting room. The utility room has plenty of cupboards, counter space for folding clothes, and a fold down ironing board. Clothes, bed linen and towels from upstairs, arrive via a laundry chute.
