Acknowledgements A big thank you to Len, my wonderful family of grownup children, Jeffrey, Stephanie and Sandra, and my grandchildren, Austyn, Madisyn, Cade, Cole, Sage, Isabella and Nora, for giving me the opportunity to be able to use some of their childhood antics and values taught, to write these books. All my family has brought me so much joy. Thanks also to a great artist, Dennis Busch, who makes my books' characters come alive. Thanks to my friend, Michael King, for his never-ending encouragement to put pen to paper. Last, but by no means least, thanks to God for giving me gifts and talents to share with others. Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs Teaching VALUES comes easily to Ann Ukrainetz, who is herself a high school teacher. With the help of God, she has raised three beautiful children to adulthood, and now has 7 awesome grandchildren. She continues to teach VALUES, through stories to young people from all parts of the globe. These VALUES are easily understood by children as young as 5 years of age, and will also be enjoyed by youngsters as old as 12 or more. Parents will also appreciate the teaching values these books provide, and may wish to re-enforce them within their own family structure. Parents are busy people, trying to make both ends meet. Raising a family today is becoming increasingly difficult. These books may lighten the load just a little, by helping to impart and model some values. "Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs" is the fifth story in the Mischievous Mikey series. It shares the strength Mikey has to be his own person and stay away from the temptations of using drugs. It also conveys his concerns for his cousin, who needs help with his drug problems. As usual, this story has a positive ending. Mischievous Mikey books are an on-going series. How on-going? For as long as there are children, parents and a value system! The artist and myself know that this book will bring you as much joy to read as it has for me to write and the artist to draw. Your children are special. Give them the privilege of learning through books! Ann D. Ukrainetz

Mischievous Mikey Says No to Drugs Mischievous Mikey's mom and dad, Clara and Charles Ainsworth, said this year Mikey could have a very special slumber party for his birthday. Mikey was so excited that he could hardly wait. He knew what slumber parties were all about. Just last month, his best friend, Cade, had invited Mikey to his slumber party. It was so much fun! One of the games was "Pin the Tail on the Donkey." Mikey pinned his tail on the donkey's nose. Everyone laughed a lot over that, especially Mikey.

They all had great food to eat, and at night, when it was time to snuggle down in their sleeping bags, they told scary stories to each other. Now in just a few short days, five to be exact, he'd be able to share his special day with his closest friends. Mikey and his mom went shopping for invitations. They chose a package with big red space ships on the front. They also bought matching plates, cups and napkins. When they got home, Mikey and his mother wrote out the invitations. 9

They said "You are invited to a Birthday Slumber Party on Friday, June 29th at 6:00 PM, until Saturday at 11:00 AM. The party is for Mikey Ainsworth at 3240 Sweet View Road, Lynnbriar. Please R.S.V.P and bring your favorite pillow, sleeping bag, tooth brush and pyjamas. "Mom, what does R.S.V.P. mean?"

10

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

They are letters which stand for French words. "R" stands for Respondez and "S.V.P." stands for s'il vous plait. You pronounce them like this: Ray pon day seal voo play. In English it means, please respond, or please let me know whether or not you are coming. "Mom, I don't think my friends need to bring a toothbrush for just one night." "Oh, yes they do, Mikey! They don't want to leave food on their teeth overnight, especially sweet birthday cake. It doesn't take long to get a cavity and our teeth have to last us a lifetime. We need to take very good care of them." "Oh, OK mom! I guess you're right. Hey, maybe we should write BRING YOUR TOOTHBRUSH in great big letters, so it stands out on the invitations." 11

Mikey gave his mom and dad a hug. They were special people. They always planned beautiful birthday parties for him, and he knew what a lot of time they spent preparing them. Mikey's dad sat down with Mikey, when he got home from his office, and together they decided what kinds of games they would play at the party. He was really good at planning super team games. Everyone always had a lot of fun 12

at Mikey's parties and couldn't wait to be invited for the next year. All Mikey's friends' parents had called Mr. and Mrs. Ainsworth to let them know that their children would be glad to come to the party.

The next three days went by pretty slowly for Mikey. Sometimes when you're waiting for a "special day" to arrive, the time just does not go by fast enough. "Mom, I wish it was Friday already," said Mikey. "I'm so excited I can hardly concentrate at school." "Don't wish your life away, Mikey," said mom, with a big smile on her face. "Each day is special. Make the very best of every minute, Mikey. The school bus

will be here to pick you up in half an hour." Mikey looked up at the shiny, metal kitchen clock, which was shaped like a tea kettle. Sure enough, it was 7:30. At 8:00 am the bus would be honking its horn to signal another school day was beginning. "Oh well," said Mikey, "I'd better feed Sassy, Beauregard and Huff and Puff before I leave." His animals were always happy to smell their fresh food being put into their dishes. They almost pushed Mikey over trying to get to their feeding bowls faster than Mikey could put in the food. "Hey, Beau!" Mikey said, "that's my thumb you're chewing! Wait for your real food, OK?"

14

Beau let out a little "Thanks for my food" bark and began chomping down his breakfast with Sassy right beside him, swiftly lapping up her sparkling fresh water. The fish were happy too, swimming in and out of the water plants in their fish bowl, catching their food as it floated down to the gravel at the bottom. The school bus honked its horn and Mr. McDougal, the bus driver, an old retired Scottish fisherman with bright blue eyes and a long white shining beard, opened up the doors of the bus to let Mikey in. Mikey hugged his parents goodbye outside of their front door. "Hello, Laddie!" said Mr. McDougal. "Good day to ye folks. That's a bonnie bairn you have there." Why thank you Mr. McDougal; we think so too." Mikey's parents explained to Mikey that "bonnie bairn" meant nice looking child. Mikey smiled and quickly got onto the school bus. "Are ye ready for another school day, Mikey?" "I sure am sir! It's my birthday tomorrow!"

15

The bus was full of students; some doing homework, some reading and some just talking to each other in a low whisper. The students knew they had to be quiet when riding the bus, so that Mr. McDougal could focus all his attention on his driving and get the boys and girls to school safely. They knew if they were not sitting in their seats properly, or screaming and talking loudly, that this would distract him from doing his job well. They all liked Mr. McDougal and, most of the time, they behaved well, because they too wanted to arrive at school safely. Mikey sat in the front of the bus. He liked to look out of the big windows, and he also liked to watch Mr. McDougal shift the gears. 16

"Hey Mikey" said Archie in a whispered tone. "My cousin is visiting us for the weekend and I was wondering if it would be OK to bring him to your party tomorrow?" "I'll ask my parents when I get home," Mikey said, "But I'm sure it will be alright." The school day couldn't go by fast enough for Mikey. The bell finally rang at 3:00 PM and Mikey said goodbye to Miss Chantel. "Have a nice birthday, Mikey" she said, giving him a little hug. "See you Monday!" Mikey was so happy to be home. In just a few short hours it would be time for his party. "Can

I do anything to help?" Mikey called to his mom, as she was busily setting the table for dinner. "Yes, Mikey" she said. "Please pass me the plates and glasses, and help me put the extra chairs around the dining table before daddy gets home. I want us to spend a little time together as a family, before all of your friends arrive." "Sure mom, I'll be glad to help. I'll do it right now!"

Mikey's dad arrived home early from the office, so he could help to get the last minute things ready for the party. 18

At 6:00 PM the door bell rang and the first of Mikey's friends arrived.

"Hi Mikey!" said Archie. "I'd like you to meet my cousin. Thanks, Mrs. Ainsworth, for telling my mom he could come too! He used to live close by us but he moved a year ago, and I haven't 19

seen him since then." "You're welcome, Archie," said Mrs. Ainsworth, as seven other boys were also arriving on Mikey's doorstep. "Did you guys bring your toothbrushes?" asked Mikey. "We sure did. Our moms made sure we packed them." "I guess all mothers think alike." said Mikey, as he gave his mom a mischievous smile. "Take your things upstairs boys," said Mikey's mom. "Mikey will show you where to put your pillows and sleeping bags."

"Hey Mikey!" said Archie's cousin, as they entered his room. "Come over here. I've got something to show you. How would you like to have one of these great tasting candies?" "No thanks, not right now. I don't want to spoil my 20

dinner. My parents never let me eat sweets right before I eat my main meals. I guess they want me to save my appetite for healthy foods."

"This isn't really sweet tasting, Mikey, it will just make you feel good for your party. Come on try it! I just took two of them and I'm starting to feel high already." Mikey's heart started to pound. He was getting a little scared. He knew what getting high meant. This wasn't candy. It was a drug.

21

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

Mikey's class had just studied all about what drugs are and what they can do to you. His class had made a special field trip to the Juvenile Drug Rehabilitation Center, which is the place where young people go to get help, when they have been taking drugs for a long time.

The counsellors there talked to Mikey's class about the different kinds of drugs. They said the drugs your doctor gives you, or the medicine your mom and dad buys at the drug store, to make you feel better when you are 22

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

sick, are good drugs. There are some drugs which can make you very ill. They can even kill you! There are also some drugs you have to keep using, once you start taking them, because your body wants more and more. This is called "Drug Addiction." One of the counsellors showed the class some white powdery stuff. It looked like fine grains of sugar or flour. “This is called cocaine. It's very dangerous to use. Some people smoke cocaine in a pipe, other people sniff it up their noses through a straw and some people put drugs into their arms with a needle. Cocaine hurts your brain so you can't think properly. It is easy to get addicted to it.

The counsellors also told the class that smoking marijuana, sometimes called "pot" is also bad 23

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

for our bodies. Pot is smoked in cigarette form called "joints." Some people even smoke it in special pipes, but anyway you smoke it, it is not good for you. It affects our brain so we can't learn properly and it is dangerous to our lungs and hearts. It can even cause diseases like cancer. Taking these drugs is also against the law. There are very severe consequences for taking them.

The counsellor told them that alcohol, like beer and wine, is for grown up people to drink, but even it is harmful to them if they drink too much. The counsellor said it's also against the law for 24

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

anyone under the age of 18 to drink alcohol. You should never drink when you drive a car, because alcohol can make a person confused, and when you drive, you really have to be alert. Another counsellor talked to the class about smoking cigarettes, pipes and chewing tobacco. He said tobacco stains your teeth and gives you very bad breath, but worse than that, it causes lung damage, so we can't breathe properly. It could even cause cancer, which many people die from every year. Mikey raised his hand and asked, "Why do people get started using drugs?" The counsellors said that some people don't know too much about drugs, and they think they can't get sick by using them. Some people use drugs to be one of the group or to keep friends. Sometimes people feel unhappy inside and they use drugs to feel better. We know that none of these reasons are good ones. Drugs are bad for us. We must say NO TO DRUGS!

25

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

Our bodies are special. We don't want to put anything into them that would not be good for us and keep us healthy. "By the way, children", said one of the counsellors, "If you are ever asked to do drugs, what are you going to say?" "WE'LL JUST SAY NO!" said everyone together.

26

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

Then we'll talk to our moms and dads, teachers, or someone we trust", said Mikey. "And maybe that person can get help!" "Good answers children," said the counsellor. "Remember, it's always best to stay away from drugs. That way, you'll always keep a healthy mind and body."

Mikey was glad he'd learned a little bit more about drugs, but he didn't know he would be tempted so soon. The voices of the counsellors rang in his ears! Now, was the time to see if he was strong enough to just say NO! "Why do you want to give me drugs?" Mikey asked the boy. He answered, "I don't know, I just want to be your friend, and since I use drugs, maybe we could get high together."

27

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

"NO!" said Mikey. "Drugs are not good for you! I DON'T WANT ANY!" Mikey left the room. He felt sad inside. He didn't want to be a tattle tail, especially at his party, but he knew he must tell his parents what happened to him. "What if Archie's cousin asked someone else at his party to take a drug? Then I would feel even worse," Mikey thought to himself. Mikey rushed down stairs to tell his parents what happened. "Mikey, we're proud of you for saying NO to drugs! It's not easy to stand up for what you believe is right. I'll call Archie's mom and dad right away and tell them to come and pick up their nephew. Maybe we can all help!" Archie's parents were very sad to hear about their nephew's problem and they came to the party and took him home with them. Mikey just told the rest of his friends that Archie's cousin was not feeling too well, so he had to leave. This was not a lie. Archie's cousin would soon be feeling very ill, and he needed help right away. Mikey had a great party, but he just couldn't help thinking about Archie's cousin. Mikey's friends left on Saturday, each of them thanking Mikey and his parents for the nice time they had. Some of his friends even sent a

28

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

thank-you note. Mikey sent a note of thanks to his friends, thanking them for the gifts he had received. "Mom, whatever happened to Archie's cousin?" asked Mikey a few weeks after his party. "I've been thinking about him a lot lately." "He went to the Juvenile Drug Rehabilitation Center, like the one your class visited a few short weeks ago," Mikey's mom told him. "Their family is moving back to our town next week. As a matter of fact, they bought the house right across the street from us. They are really a nice family and Archie's cousin is all better now." Mikey was so glad the boy was getting help. He was really a nice person. He'd just gotten mixed up with the wrong kind of friends. A few days later, Mikey saw Archie's cousin sitting under a tree in the school playground. He was all alone, looking rather sad. Mikey went over to him, "Hi! How are you feeling?" "Oh, hi, Mikey! I'm better now, but I don't have any friends. Doing drugs just scared everyone away from me. I feel very lonely."

29

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

"I'll be your friend," said Mikey. "Now that you're better, maybe we can play together. When you were doing those drugs I was afraid of you, and it scared me too. My mom and dad told me that everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and everyone deserves a second chance, especially when they are sorry for what they have done and get help. Come on! Let's go play basketball. Maybe this weekend our families can have a picnic together, since we now live so close to each other. "Thanks, Mikey, for caring about

30

Mischievous Mikey Says No To Drugs

me! I was so mad at you at first, but I realized later that you, my parents and my relatives cared enough to help me get drug free. That's the best feeling in the world. Maybe I can help someone SAY NO TO DRUGS, TOO!"
